  • I wanted to be transparent and share with you what our budget looks like for a big family, living on a middle-class income. We live on one income, and we are paying off debt and trying to live frugal, but also be able to enjoy life as well. Today I'm sharing with your how we budget every week and how we take care of our finances as a family on one income. We have side hustles to bring in extra money, as well as ways we cut back so we can pay off debt.

    Your eyes with that sweater! 😍 I love Jordan Page too, and have learned so much from her. A game changer for us has been an “allowance” for my husband and I. Each pay check, we each get some spending money. It’s the money that is ours individually, and we don’t have to get the others’ approval, whether we want to spend it on coffees out, clothes, trips to the gym, etc. It really is freeing 😊

    Keep at it! We went through the Dave Ramsey class in 2008. I’m 33 and have a family of 5 and I’m also a stay at home mom. Once you get the car payment and personal debt paid off you’re going to feel like a whole new woman!!! I was hoping you’d give specific numbers for your grocery budget. I read Jordan page and she recommended $100 a month per person so we spend about $500 a month, but I don’t have any way of knowing if that’s a good amount or if I should try to cut it back. We also shop at Aldi and do Walmart grocery pickup. 😊♥️ I highly recommend the every dollar app if you don’t already have a budgeting app.

    Great video, girl!! I love talking budget stuff. I’m such a Dave Ramsey fan. My husband and I went thru FPU about 13 years ago it was such a game changer. We take money out every Thursday for groceries/eating out and gas. We found Thursday to be such a great day to do it because it always seems to come up faster than like a Friday or Saturday. 🤣 And yes...you can totally get by for 7 days!! So much better than thinking, “ok...I just gotta make it 20 more days!” LOL

    Keep it up! I’m very much like you 10 years in the future. 😆 (39, homeschooling mom of soon to be 6, one income - hubby is a teacher)
    kids get older and expenses and cost of living seems to go up and the house always needs something. So glad we got out of credit card debt in younger years and learned to save. We have our home (with some debt on home equity) and student loans and so glad to have some savings and a clear plan. Learning self control early to get out of that debt ( and having housing that is within your means) allows you to live as you said and get those occasional treats and splurges! Don’t give up, don’t compromise your goals and don’t compare yourself to others. Best wishes! 💕🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

    Thank you for being honest. We are in the middle of transferring from two incomes to one and at the same time trying to save up money for a down-payment because the market where we are is starting to look better. I needed some one to say it out loud - perfection is an illusion anyways 😊

      @jaimiekight  5 років тому

      natureallmighty yesss sister. No one is perfect. Most people that I’ve thought “had it all together”, got help from family members for down payments, struggle to pay all of their bills on the things they own, or have had assistance in one way or another. I would look for down payment assistance programs- there are a bunch of great options out there!! Xoxo

    Thank you for such a wonderful video! It’s real life and budgeting is tough. I also watch Jordan Page and she has also mentioned spending $100 per person in the family per month for groceries. This is super tough! The 7 day grocery budget also resonated with me too! It makes it easier to view it that way. Great content Jaimie! We are in the same season on life on one income, and I can identify with so much of what you shared. I too get the same simple joy of "living" and making room in the budget for Starbucks drive-thru occasionally and wandering the Dollar Spot or hit up the Dollar Tree for home decor craft ideas. To some, that may not be "living", but I do find joy in those activities that I can do for myself that are relatively low-budget, and fun for me. I do plan on returning to work after being a SAHM for a few years. I'm a Registered Nurse, and I'm actually working on starting my own business doing cosmetic injectables. I'm looking forward to being able to contribute to our family income again, and that I'm taking this step for my family and I. I worked so hard to get that degree, and it feels good to be able to use it and pay off my school loans using my income.

    Love it. We are all on different journeys in all areas. We personally have walked more toward a debt free lifestyle and Dave Ramsey way of living. But I also try not to get so caught up on it that I am stressing and not able to enjoy life. God always provides. He is so, so good to us. We always tithe, we make sure that hitting our goals never stops us from being generous if we see a need and want to give, we don't think "oh but we want to pay off our house so we cant give" We make it work. It's not a perfect science with 4 kiddos, as you know- but we are doing well.

    I loved your viewpoint on this! Everyone does have their own ideas of what living life looks like! God's always provided, and he always will take care of our needs. One year we had an major unforeseen medical bill that our insurance didn't touch. He provided me a summer working with kids in our community center where I was encouraged to share the gospel with them. He also gave our girls had a fun summer with their grandparents while I helped pay that me bill off. I could go on and on about the many times God continues to provide for my family!!!

    I recently watched Jordan's half hour budget video so I was really able to follow along. I figured New Years was a good time to reshape the budget so we have more for fun. I never found vacations with little kids any fun at all. We returned from our experience totally spent and gotta get right back to the grind. My 2 kids are now in 2nd and 4th grades so getaways now are so much better than when we had to pull along side the highway so I could breastfeed. Ugh.

    You are my soul sister! We have the same debts- our vehicle loan and the other loan (replacing 100 year old pipes and fixing the ceiling that the water took out!) are so close to being paid off- we can taste the financial freedom! We spend a bulk of our finances on groceries and we take one trip each year to Door County in WI, which is where we live. I’m a suuuuper part time hairstylist- I work 3 hours, 3 nights a week... but it helps, and I’m able to be home with my little guys and never have to worry about a sitter if there’s a snow day or a sick kiddo, which for me is major peace of mind. This is totally the same as us. We have our car payment which will be all paid off this year (🎉) a small credit card loan (which we don't pay any interest on - we use it for yearly payments, like my hubby's bus pass and our car insurance) and my hubby's student loan. In the UK people don't really seem to pay off their student loans the same way as in the US, not really sure why, but we've never really considered it 'debt' before, though I guess it is 😂 God always looks after us, whether that be someone randomly buying one of my boys new shoes or we get some extra income XX

    Loved this! Question - do you set a weekly or monthly budget for the non-essentials for yourself, like Starbucks, makeup, etc.? I have a mindset that I basically “shouldn’t” spend any extra on myself since I opted to leave my job last year to pursue my dream of being a SAHM (I was the burned-out primary breadwinner for 9 years, and we’re now a family of 6 on one budget too). Like you said, I want to be wise but live life too. It’s a hard balance!

    • @jaimiekight
      @jaimiekight  5 років тому +1

      Hillary Hoshaw it is so hard. BUT- because you’ve decided to stay home, doesn’t mean you have to punish yourself. Yes it’s a sacrifice, but you can still live. :) we normally use extra hustle money for things like that. Sometimes though I spend less on groceries because John and I get donuts for the kids on Sunday before church, or I conserve gas money so we can have a date- if we don’t have the extra cash. I’m not above returning pop bottles for Friday night pizza!! Haha

    Remember a car loan is good debt. As long as you make your payments on time it can actually raise your credit score. I’d focus more on the credit cards those are not as good.

    God really does provide. We had a $1500 medical bill pop up December 21st! We were scrambling, we could have taken it from savings, but that money was supposed to be for something else, lo and behold, we get two separate cheques in the mail from overpaying on other bills that added up to exactly what we needed. God is good!

    What does your grocery budget look like? I meal plan and do it weekly too but it’s still been soooo hard. I think maybe bc stuff like toilet paper, diapers and such go into the budget and ends up taking from food money? Do you do that separate? We have 4 kids and we spend about $1100 monthly. Isn’t that crazy?!!

    We are a homeschooling family as well with 3 kids (soon to be 4) 6 and under. We are also a one income family and are trying to make it work. Student loans kill us every month! My question is, do you have a budget for homeschool "stuff" like supplies, field trips etc? Since my kids are always home and always with me, I feel like I automatically spend a lot of money on "experiences" for them to get us out and to reinforce school lessons.

    • @jaimiekight
      @jaimiekight  5 років тому

      Lauren Nilsen I feel like this would be a great budget to have- but we currently don’t. Anything like this normally just gets taken out of “extras” or we use extra hustle money to pay for it. :)

    I also had 4 kids before 30. I had my fifth one month after my 30th birthday. We were paying off my husbands student loans until 3 years ago. We lived in a small 3 bedroom apartment for a long time because it was cheap and we could afford everything else because of it. I don't know how you do it as a homeschoolers. Our kids go to school and get 2 free meals a day, 5 days a week. We are fortunate to live in an area with amazing public schools.

    Do you budget money for your kids clothes? I have 4 kids also and clothes for them is a huge expense. My oldest obviously always needs new clothes as she goes into new sizes, my second daughter gets a lot of hand me downs, but then I had twin boys and they need new clothes every season as they grow.

    Thanks for this, J! We are currently a family of 5 living on one income in a VERY expensive cost of living area. My husband earns a good income, but our mortgage is pretty hefty although we bought in one of the cheapest safe suburbs (of Denver) two years ago. We are currently discussing the timing (and ready soon) to add a 4th (and last) baby. Question: what financial preparations did you make when preparing to add Ingrid to your family? I get anxious about braces, college, etc in the future as we are already not debt free! Practically speaking tho - how to you prepare for adding that 4th child?!?

    • @jaimiekight
      @jaimiekight  5 років тому +1

      Jennifer Heath hey girl! We personally made sure our births from our other children were paid off- but other than that, we didn’t do anything specific for financial prep before we had her or got pregnant. :)

    • @jenniferheath4376
      @jenniferheath4376 5 років тому

      Thanks Jaimie! Well, our insurance is good - so we don’t owe anything from our other three births! So that’s good! Haha - I suppose I’m just thinking of adding another person to feed clothe, and eventually send to college ... can you tell I’m a planner?

    J, I wondered how you budget for things for yourself/John.
    I know you but some nice make-up, mug, clothing here and there- how do you do that?
    Do you give yourself a weekly allowance or ask Holy Spirit haha......
    I’ve gotten to place where I’m afraid to get anything like that for myself in order to chip away at the debt but I still want to wear make-up haha and live.
    Wondered about that-

      LNTalk we normally try to use “hustle” money for that. Lol if I sell some clothes or I do a wedding- I try to be really wise about the purchases I do make, but I use extra side money for stuff like that.
