    I just went all by myself for the 1st time ever here in Chicagoland. I have a small lake that about 10 feet deep. Now I have to capsize it and try to right it. I weigh 168 lbs but I'm buying the water bag just in case. 😆 thanks for the video, really appreciate it.

    I am around 70kg and can right my H14 turbo by myself on a zero wind day, but only just. I never used to be able to do it, but then I tried having a loop in the righting line and hooking into it with my trapeze harness and it worked. It allows you to lean right back and get your arms back as well, so your CofG is further out, a few bounces and up it comes. Give it a try! Thanks for all your videos, I have learned heaps.

      yes - that sounds like it would add just enough to bring the 14 up.

    It's Interesting to see these tests, I personally haven't had much success with the bag and prefer to use a righting pole (other boat, not a 14), but watching at the video I see that I apply the same technique as Johnny, pushing the bag behind my back. I think Helena's technique might be better, she managed to extend the bag more or less up to her waist but she extended her torso further out compared to Johnny.

    • @JoyriderTV

      yes, perhaps I need to test these two techniques against each other with the same sailor.

    When I saw the main submerged into the water I immediately came with an idea, that maybe sheeting in should help righting her, as the mainsail will stay above the water surface. With so little wind and bows pointing towards the win there should be no risk of boat sailing away on her own because of such mainsheet configuration.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому

      Yes, that did come to mind - i think there would still be some adhesion between the sail and the water. One takeaway from this is - don't capsize when there's no wind!

    Also note, the mast float may prevent a turtle capsize, but produces a torque acting against you, making it harder to right it.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, we fitted it to our 14 as it was capsizing so frequently that we wanted to save time with the inversions.

    65 KG here, I use a bag for sure. Technique is everything though. Bag looked too high in the demo? Bag can be in the water (no weight) with legs bent, straighten legs (squat) and bag lifts clear of water. I use a mast float too as mostly solo. Bag not going to help in a turtle so float is gold. Good video.

  • @feedingravens
    @feedingravens 3 роки тому +1

    Can it be that you do not need to pull the bag that high up? In principle it just has to clear the water only when you hang yourself out. The trick would be how to let the rope slide along your shoulder when going down.

    Bonjour, en français : le problème est le même qu avec la voile de planche ! faire glisser la voile sur l eau pour qu elle se décolle plus facilement . Tactic : 1° se déplacer vers l arrière du cadre. 2° avant que l arrière ne plonge trop et que l on glisse à l eau se déplacer rapidement vers l avant qui va planter à son tour, environ entre étrave et cadre. 3° ce mouvement de balancier arr--av fait faire une rotation horizontale d'~ 1/4 de tour et le simple vent apparent créé s engouffre sous la voile ce qui permet de la décoller de l eau et là... En régate le poids minimum est de 68 kg pour permettre 1° de redresser facilement 2° de ne pas favoriser les poids plus légers ! Ne pas oublier que c est le trampoline qui fait girouette dans le vent . CQFD .Xian 25 ans compétitions HC 14, 16, 18, 21😂

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  Рік тому

      That's very interesting is that 68kg is the minimum for racing but also so that the sailor is heavy enough to bring the boat upright.
      Thanks again.

    Hi Joe! As parents very often ask questions on forums about adding a bob to the mast in misconception of safety it gives, could you please make a video on that topic?
    As far as i understand, the only safety issue it solves is preventing mast damage at shallow and wavy conditions. But as it is often added to kid’s cats, they need much more weight ti right it than with bare mast/sails, up to extreme of inability to actually right it.
    Ideally, it would be great to see how much extra weight is needed to right a cat with bob compared to bare mast one.

      A mast float stops the boat from going completely turtle, which becomes a more difficult situation for lighter sailors. This is especially true if the mast floods.

    • @DennisMelentyev
      @DennisMelentyev Рік тому

      @@researchcapt well, in my experience on HC16, i can bring it from turtle to it’s side alone. Yep, I’m about 90 kilos.
      And yes, watertight mast is a must. In every situation.
      So, yes, while bob is an option and has it’s pros and cons, the key point is it is often misunderstood. So for me it was rather a proposal to de-mystify it.

    Par force 2 à 6 Beaufort même tactic même à l envers ! On redresse comme on a chaviré : sur la DIAGONALE. Le bout de redressant en main on met un pied dans le bout de tension à l' arr du trampoline l autre sur la coque . L av de la coque opposée sort de l eau puis les 2 et le vent fait le reste en mettant le bateau sur la tranche, On remonte sur la coque par l avant et le trampoline qui fait girouette, mât en avant de la GV, le vent s engouffré dessous + les vagues et le HC 14 se redresse en 3 minutes ! Même tactic pou le HC 16 et 18 . Cordialement Xian. PS avec plus de force 3--4 chercher les solutions pour s aider du vent car on s épuise vite à lutter contre !!! Xian
