@80smusicisawesome the interview really is from 1986, but the tv-show was made and broadcast in the early 90s. they showed a short excerpt of fascination street live in leipzig 1990 before they faded into this old interview from the archive. :-)

Robert is nearly always very good to interviewers and fans. There have been exceptions of course, he has been a professional musician for more than 40 years, but in general he is incapable of being rude or snooty. He is just very kind.

They tried to sound a bit different on early recordings, however I wouldn't call them a punk band, or, a dance.

Haha, that's because right before they faded into this interview they were showing a minute of Live in Leipzig 1990 (btw great footage and nice version of fascination street)

in 2023 this feels kinda strange.

I wonder if Smith is aware of the brilliant first 5 Simple Minds albums?? Released between the years 79-82 culminating with the masterpiece that is New Gold Dream. Yeah they sold out by this point to chase the yanky dollar, but during that period I mentioned they were arguably one of the best bands in the U.K.

all those albums sound the same lol, it was only expected to hit big with a song made popular by a movie.

@@hedonist4antasy They don’t sound the same. There’s a huge difference between their first two albums which are clearly Punk & New Wave & their third album, Empires & Dance which is very much European Industrial Electronica. Don’t You was still some years off.

I would imagine he probably liked/loved their early records and hated what they turned into in the mid 80s. Can't say I blame him.
