It is very important to make sure it is compatible. I usually stay with the same brand for primer/sealer, color and topcoat. thanks Brad!
You exactly pointed out the most important confusion that we people face...Thank you so much sir...
Glad I could help
Thanks Brad! You just saved me from loads of sanding.....great tip and video as always.
Glad I could help.
Thanks for the vids and the help. That Behlen vinyl sealer and the clear lacquer gloss were great for my guitar build. I've never been successful with gloss finishes until I watched your vids. 🎸
I’m very glad to hear that it worked well for you!
I've had issues with paints not mixing well together I would suggest a sample piece before hand to be sure the paint will mix well. I had stenciled a pinball game that cost me around 250 dollars in stencils and paint to find out the clear coat didn't mix with the black paint on the game. All the black paint cracked and melted off to the primer. Good luck
Great tip Brad! How about for a Quick Tip Tuesday going over the compatibility of finishes, or maybe that might require a longer video. That's a really important topic that a TON of people just aren't aware of. Something that might be a cool thing would be to demonstrate what happens when you spray nitro over poly, and what can happen when you spray poly over not very dried nitro etc. Just some ideas for some content if you're ever in a pinch for ideas.
Thanks Dave. That’s helpful, and I will keep those in mind.
You answered my question. Perfect thank you 🍒
Glad I could help
Keep the great videos coming Brad, always learn some thing, Cheers
I heard this somewhere "A work of art is never finished you just quit working on it" I like.
It’s always a tough decision to quit working on something.
There's the If I only left it alone. You nailed it, it was perfect but no You COULD NOT LEAVE IT ALONE. When you have the urge to IMPROVE your project it is best to walk away. Leave the house if you have to.
Great video. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. 👍👍
Hell yeah, thanks a milli
Really helpful, thank you for this video!
i have a question, if you know, ive made a sword. and im finishing it up with saton clear acrylic coats, but its looking glossy, can i just go over it with a clear matte acrylic?
Yes. Let it dry. Sand smooth with 800 grit. Then go over it with the matte.
Hey Brad, I have a question I was hoping you could help me with. I have a Telecaster kit, and I'm painting it with spray cans of Nitro lacquer. I have a primer, color and a clear coat. I remember you saying in one of your videos that if you apply too many coats in one day, the finish will crack. Now, I'm going to be relicing this guitar anyway, so if I apply the majority of my coats in one or two days, will the finish crack like a normal Nitro lacquered guitar? Or will it look different?
Thanks
You’ll generally notice a similar cracking to aged lacquer, but I find they tend to be a bit bigger.
The problem is they are a bit unpredictable.
Brad Angove Thanks man, you're the best
You’re quite welcome.
i bought a rear bumper lip, in a matte black (didn't mean too)... wanted gloss, really don't want to take it back and wait for a new one... what can i do to gloss it up?
Sand lightly with 800 grit and clearcoat with the 2K.
I painted my car wheels matte black. But I changed my mind and want them in black gloss. Can I just add 2 layers of gloss black and it will be glossy ?
You can add gloss clear coat and it will be glossy and better protected.
We love the design of the tile we picked for our backsplash, but the tile has a shiny irradecent finish that that is too shiny for us. Will a matte spray get rid of the shiny finish?
It will as long as you can get it to adhere properly
Love all your videos, Brad! I've picked up many tips from watching them.
What about a gloss to matte fade? I'm thinking of something like a gloss purple fading into a matte black for a bike frame. What would be your approach?
There are a couple ways you could do that. I suspect my approach would be to build a gloss finish, sand with 800 grit, spray my matte fade from one side with 1-2 coats of matte clear, and then carefully sand the other side to 2000 grit and polish it. I would kind of fade the amount of polishing up to the line too.
@@BradAngove My man! Thank you! I definitely get the process you describe. this is some super helpful advice and I'm excited to test it out.
I hope it goes well for you.
Hi Brad. I have a question. I have a rat rod with flat white paint. I wanna sand certain areas down to the bare metal and spray the bare metal with flat clear in those certain areas. Would u see the difference between the flat clear and the flat white paint?
Sand those areas and then spray the clear over the whole guitar so you don’t end up with weird transition areas.
I'm spray painting a polystyrene and polypropylene object and I've got to make some designs on the surface with tape. I'm using rust-oleum american accents 2x ultra cover for reference. I sprayed a primer on it and am putting a pink gloss coat then taping the design off and spraying a black gloss on, then I will finish it off with a semi-gloss clear coat. Do you have any idea how long I need to wait to tape it and how long I need to wait to sand? Also, at the moment I dont have anything higher than 220 grit block. Will that work to buff the gloss to take the semi-gloss clear coat?
I’d give it at least a couple days before taping. I’m not sure polystyrene will accept that type of paint without melting, but I don’t work with it much so I may be out to lunch.
220 will leave scratches far too deep for the clear to fill.
exactly the information i was curious about, making some brackets for my bike from scratch and my closest available color match is a satin shine paint, but i am working from bare metal and sanding and priming is a thing, and i'm using a matte clear coat. sounds like it should match the matte finish on my bike close enough.
i have a test piece to get at close as i can, mounts right on the bike already. going to be fun trying.
Hi Brad, could you recommend a good clear poly spray for doing a more semi-gloss finish? Love the 2K Clear Glamour by Spray Max you recommended. Have you tried the semi-matte? Or, would you just use the Clear Glamour and sand it without polishing to get a semi-gloss? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Does it need to be in a spray can?
Not necessarily but I have gotten the best results with spray. I watched your video on wipe-on poly and tried that for the body, but it’s been two months and I can still push a fingernail into the clear on my wipe-on/brush-on semi-gloss. The spray was always better, thicker, stronger, more like the factory product but I’m new to this 2K.
I’m open to any suggestions you have and as always thanks for your responses. I use your affiliate links so just lmk.
What I meant was, do you have the option to spray it with a gun? I don’t think the spraymax has a semi-gloss option, but if you can mix and spray there are some alternatives.
Oh ok sorry man. Late night and should’ve picked up on that. No gun, but spray max has a “Semi-matte” option that most reviewers say works well and has a gloss. Only complaint by a few is that it can sometimes leave milky spots. Sounds more like user error to me. Might give it a shot.
Spraymax is generally quite good. Milky spots are from spraying in too high a humidity or too heavily on the first coat usually.
I sprayed my bike with satin paint and have left it for 4 days drying? Is this to long to apply a spray matt lacquer? Thanks
You’ll want to sand it a bit first so the lacquer can stick. Use 800 grit.
@@BradAngove okay, thanks 👍
What grit do you use to scuff the gloss paint before spraying matte topcoat?
800 usually
Hi brad I have a car that is Matte and I buffed it and now there’s no more matte just shiny which was my mistake I’m wondering if I can go in with the 2k matte?
You will need to sand it and clean it first. I recommend 800 grit. Then you can use matte clear.
How long do I have to wait for the paint to dry before I can apply clear coat and not have it crack up like a desert
It depends on the paint type. What are you using?
I have a hand carved Prussian eagle, which I’ve already sanded down to the bare wood. What amber spray do you recommend, that would work well with the poly gloss you pop at the bottom?
My wife has a Madonna carved from a chunk of mahogany, that is still in tree form for the rest of the piece. I’d like to surprise her by making it full gloss everywhere.
Could I use the same poly for that super shiny easy to do high gloss finish?
Thanks so much,
Joe
My favourite amber spray can is the star cast amber from Behlen. You can use the 2k gloss over it if you give it a couple weeks to dry.
For the mahogany you will likely want to grain fill or at least seal first. Behlen’s vinyl sealer will do a decent job on those pores if you want to avoid the filling process. The 2k should still work outside of that.
Brad Angove Fantastic, I’ll definitely follow your recommendations. You are a fountain of information!
Joe from Texas
ok but could you make a short demo please
thanks
How do I know when bronze topcoat is ready to scuff before spraying matte clear coat? Thanks
It depends on the type of paint. Should say on the can usually.
Hey! I accidentally painted a wooden footboard for my bed with gloss spray paint but was supposed to do semi gloss. What should I do? 😅
Let it dry for a few days, sand it lightly with 600 grit paper, and give it a coat of semi-gloss.
Hi, can I spray clear Satin varnish over clear gloss on Wood. Thnks
You can, just make sure you sand the gloss a bit so the satin will stick. I would use 800 grit.
This was super helpful! Thank you! :)
Thanks; I’m glad you found it useful.
Should I scuff it after each coat to then finish it with the matte or scuff at the end of all my coats to then finish it with the matte
Scuff after the full spraying session and once it’s dry. Then do the matte.
What will be the outcome if I spray clear dead flat lacquer over glossy finish?
It will be flat. But also depending on paint type of you try and spray directly over gloss without sanding it first it won’t stick properly.
What’s better for best results for shine. Gloss paint with a clear coat or matte paint with a clear.
It makes no difference. It’s the clear that matters.
Brad Angove ok I just wanted to make sure because i didn’t want the paint to react weird to a gloss and waste money.
Brad, what's your opinion on spraying 2k clear over enamel? There's a lot of mixed info on the topic.
I have a bike frame that I recently sprayed with Rust-Oleum's universal spray cans and my plan was to use spray Max 2k clear for a more durable finish. Will this backfire on me?
The colour coats have been curing for well over month. So, I have that on my side.
I have done that before. Make sure you scuff the enamel thoroughly with 800 grit before applying the clear and you should be fine in my experience.
@@BradAngove could I use 1,000 grit? Because the piece I’m painting is pretty small so I don’t want to scuff it up too much
1000 should work, that’s quite smooth though so you’re approaching the grits where you would need to worry about the paint not having anything to hold onto.
I assume reverse is true also? I am finding some matte colors I like but want gloss final guitar. That will work right?
Yes, that’s no problem.
@@BradAngove thanks
Hey Brad, I just finished repainting my kitchen cabinet and the end product is glossy and I want it more like satin finish. Any suggestions on a quick fix. Thanks
Have a look at my video on how to turn gloss finishes matte or satin.
Brad, sorry for my, maybe, stupid question..need to refinish a strat body and ok, i'll sand it (not on bare wood), apply some repair to dent etc...and ok... moving on, the question: i want a matte finish, i have a gloss can for color (didn't find it matte) , and 2 can of matte clear...
step,
1) spray color (maybe 2/3 coat like on glossy project),
2) WAIT until it dryes comletely
3) sand it (maybe gently) with 800grit at least to remove visible gloss (maybe with scotchbrite?)
4) put a couple of clear (matte) coat and, after it dry, never sand it and buff (like i did with glossy finish)?
i've understand it right?
Sorry, 'couse eng is not my main lang and i prefer to ask to GuitarPaintGod before make mistake LoL
thanks in advance 🙂
Marco
You’ve got it right. You don’t sand and buff the matte at the end.
this is so useful, thank you! What would you recommend as a matte varnish to use over a gloss alkalyd based black wood laquer?
Sand the lacquer smooth with 800 grit and then try to use a matte clear coat of the same type.
Thanx for keeping it short.
That’s what she said...
So I've recently picked up a project guitar to work on and want to give it a matte finish... How far should I sand the current gloss finish before repainting? I was thinking going 160, 240, 320 and then 400 grit sanding... Is that too much? Do I take it down to the bare wood?
That’s unnecessary. Just sand it with 600 grit until it isn’t shiny anymore. Then clean it and spray your matte.
@@BradAngove would 800 grit work? I tried every hardware store nearby and not one of them stocks 600 grit... And none of the employees can tell me why...
@@nikregnart5652 800 should be fine. 400 would also work in most cases.
Need help :
I have 2.0 nozzle gun...but I think for better finish we need 1.4 mm nozzle for bike body parts ... So I have to get professional service which means it will cost me more..
Can I have one or two coats with 2.mm nozzle at home and then get one 1.4mm spray finish from outside?
Will it work? Can I save money and still have a professional finish for my bike parts
I’m not sure I understand what you mean about professional service. Why don’t you just get an inexpensive 1.4 and do your coats with that?
@@BradAngove ideally i should do as per ur advice. But I dont have the whole setup (air compressor, guns, pipes) for spray painting with me. I just have $70 HVLP sprayer handheld sprayer with a fixed 2.0mm nozzle.
It cant give me super finish for bike parts. Just to save time n money , I thought I can do 2 coats with 2.0 n then 1.4 coat from outside by paying someone for this job.
Will this work from finish point of view ?
@@vnitmechite2003 I'm just not sure that that will be more efficient or cost effective for you. But if you prep the finish for them properly it should work.
@@BradAngove thank u
I currently have a matte finish and I want to turn to a gloss finish, what grit sand paper would you consider using before I clear coat?
800 grit
@@BradAngove sweet thanks man!
I need a word of wisdom, I have this acoustic guitar and it is clear glossy and I want to finish it glossy, but after I did sand the old clear before I did spray clear glossy I decided to spray some clear mate I have in a can sense last year to fill in some little spots to sand it again. I did that and end up with a matte surface like you mention on this video. Now I let it dry for 6 hours and sand it a little with 1500 sand paper to spray the clear glossy coat and the finish work still clear mate. so I decided to let it dry for couple hours and spray another coat of clear glossy and still looks clear mate. Am I doing something wrong here? or do I need to do something else.
So you’re saying your gloss clear is coming out matte? Give it a few days to dry properly, dry sand it with 800 grit so it’s smooth, and then shoot three coats of gloss clear on it 10 minutes apart.
@@BradAngove really i dont think it will work...why couldnt this work on the first apply of clear..?i think the atomization of a spray can never reach a high end spray gun...so you have to just sand the clearcoat you have with gradually from 800 to the finest you can 1500-2000 and then use a fine rubbing compound to make it mirror finish...
1.apply as many thin coats of clear as possible ..the reason is the spray can clears are not as hard as the 2 part clear coats with the hardener...so its very easy to end up with sanding lines....BE VERY GENTLE DONT PUT ANY PRESSURE AT ALL AT THE SANDING PAPER AND ALWAYS WET SAND..
2.MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE COVERED WITH ENOUGH CLEARCOAT ALL THE SURFACE....SANDING THROUGH THE CLEAR AND REACH THE BASE MEANS YOU START ALL OVER AGAIN...
i ll try your method brad....sanding with high level sand paper and then just spray 3 thin coats...im not sure if ill end up with a mirror finish ...if you come up with this result...please respond...!!
and one other question....spraying matte base and use high gloss varnish with no sanding or buffing...gives me a nice eggshell satin soft sheen finish...is there any incompatibility using these two...as far as cohesion is concerned..?thank you very much for your videos!!
The typical reason I see for gloss clear from cans looking matte is that there isn’t enough paint going on fast enough for it to level itself properly to appear glossy. Sanding with 800 grit will allow the new paint to stick, and then spraying 3 coats 10 minutes apart should get enough on there for it to level out right. If it flows correctly it will look glossy. Applying it too light will prevent it from being able to do that.
Sanding and polishing after should help really being out the shine. I have several videos on this process.
@@BradAngove true...did it recently...paint matte didnt wanna buy matte clear used gloss...didnt put much cause i didnt care..i was only after putting some protection and came up with an interesting eggshell..ofc ill have to fix it....you can tell the right amount of clear by the uneveness of the surface...some areas are rough to touch some not..you can relfect your hand unde light...some areas reflects nice some are dull vague and hazy...the truth is that with matte its dead easy to produce a nice surfeace that hide blemishes and imperfections and you dont have to worry about the uneveness in reflection...cause it absorbs the light ..the surface looks perfect...its the gloss that needs the elbow greaase to make it mirror finish...besides all basecoats ''look matte when dry'' ...its the clear that decides...!!answer me please this....
if i put many thin coats of clear and have a descent result in gloss shine...and a thick layer to sand...
can i sand with a very fine paper 1200-1500 ...then put 2 layers of clear and come with a mirror finish...?
the way i know is put the layers of clear....wet sand it with 800-1000-1500-2000-....and then buff with a compound and polish it...
thank you once more for you videos and your kindness to respond...we learn a lot..!!!
@@BradAngove please explain what do you mean fast enough to level itself...??sounds important...and what is the best method....for clearcoat...i know you have videos but explain it here...you put a very light first coat in order the surface to become tacky and then 2 heavy coats in 10 min interval...or 4-5 successive coats...?im not talkin about the spray gun...im only referring to spray cans..please try to answer at least the first one...i think its a key to the final gloss....but i dont understand it..thanx in advance
I make signs that get left outdoors, so I need to use an exterior clear coat that seems to only go as low as satin as far as sheen is concerned. I'm wondering if I could then use a flat clear coat and still maintain the protection I would get from my exterior clear coat.
A flat clear won’t reflect light, so there more chance of fading. It also gets messier quicker. A good quality flat clear will still offer reasonable durability and protection though.
@@BradAngove More chance of fading even if applied over the satin clear coat? Define good quality. I.e. brand name.
I’m using gel stain and Behr interior / exterior paint to make my signs. For my own I don’t use any clear coat. I’ve had a porch sign outside for 4 years with no finish and it’s fine. I don’t know if the knots might become a problem though. I make no attempt to deal with those. The only reason I use clear coat at all is because I sell them and I guess it gives me some kind of peace of mind. After seeing what you said about paint though, I’m wondering if I should continue.
Hey Brad,
I have refinished some rusty gym equipment with Rustoleum black semi-gloss paint. Rustoleum doesnt seem to offer a semi-gloss clear coat. Ive only seen gloss and matte clear coats. What would you use?
Also, whats the benefits of clear coat instead of just applying another coat of colored paint? Is it more durable or something?
Clear is usually to protect the paint. Rustoleum definitely has semi gloss clear.
Yeah, I cant even find it online. Only Rustoleum semi-gloss cleae that they have appears to be their Painter’s Touch2X. Is that an enamel or acrylic? Its not labeled on the can.
@@nickt423 That's an acrylic enamel.
@@BradAngove
Thanks. So would that work well over my layers that are enamel?
I’ve used them together before without any difficulty.
Yep. Exactly the answer i was looking for
Good to hear.
Hey I was hoping you could help me out with something I am spray painting a dinner table the top I'm using a metallic bright copper and no matter how hard I try or how even I spray it I still keep getting spots that look more saturated than others Im wondering when I top coat it with the clear will it even it out for me or will it compound my problem and do you think it would help even out if I sprayed the top coat on while the copper was still kind of wet thanks in advance hopefully you know what the heck I'm talking about
You’re having problems with inconsistent concentration of the pearl. That’s quite difficult to solve with spray cans on a large surface unfortunately.
I’m sorry to say that adding clear won’t help.
@@BradAngove thanks so much for taking the time to reply back to me I really appreciate it and good point on being too far away that's probably what's causing the Mist that is creating a weird color difference
Hello sir. What if i already finish using gloss clear. What if i spray Flat clear what will happen? Will it result to matte?
Yes, you just need to sand the gloss clear so that the matte can stick. Use 800 grit.
so if you have a matte finish you can change it to gloss as well by just sanding and applying the gloss
Correct.
can i apply glossy clear on matte surface?
Just sand it lightly first with 600 grit. Then yes.
If I want gloss upper section and matte bottom section do I use two different clear coats?
Generally yes.
Brad! Glad I found this video a I hope you find this message. I've been Painting and modifying Nerf guns for some time now. Been using duplicolor satin auto paints and getting excellent results. Not sure why but, for my most recent Nerf project, I chose a dark green enamel. The finished product looks shithouse. Dark enamel green and matte black on some parts. Matte green would've been better. My masking job was excellent and if I squint, it looks great but nup. It sucks. Now, I'm a little afraid to scuff it up before I spray on the matte clear coat because I'm scared the scuff marks will show through. They are mainly for display so is it necessary to scuff it up and will the matte clear coat make the enamel appear matte if I don't scuff it up? Thanks from Perth Western Australia.
If you scuff it properly the matte paint will fill any scuff marks and adhere properly. If you don’t, it should still appear matte. It just might not actually stick.
@@BradAngove thanks Brad for the prompt reply! Will do what you suggested. Subscribed!
I'm here because rust-oleum has army green but only in clos for some crazy reason. and their Advanced formula clear is fuel resistant.
It is a good tip...but...I have been building model kit for years and put a matt finish over some of them with no sanding first and it works fine for me. It is a little different but just saying...Thanks for sharing...
It’s not really different per se. It’s just that a model kit presumably doesn’t get a lot of wear so to speak. You don’t necessarily need the added durability from mechanical adhesion for that.
Hi hope you can answer so can a satin go over a metallic finish and be satin without the glitter showing through thx great videos 🤘
It would still be satin. I’m not sure what you mean about the glitter not showing through though. Satin won’t prevent it from being metallic looking.
@@BradAngove thanks for replying I ment the metallic showing though ok I understand you thx again great tutorials 🤘
So I've just silver metallic base and clear coated my helmet gonna sand 600 do graphics at this point satin can isn't good enough over graphics for protection is it ? surely clear coat sand 1000 then satin 🤷♂️👍I've never used satin before 👍
Satin can work, but you’re better off building up some gloss and then sanding once dry and applying a coat of satin.
Question I painted my rims satin black with gloss over it . Can I just paint gloss black over it ????
So you already painted them black with gloss, and you you want to cover that in gloss black?
Brad Angove yes because it fully dry in I see some imperfections
Normally we would use another coat of gloss clear rather than black to correct that.
Hi, What grit do you use send the gloss paint before apply the the clear matte ? Thx
Usually 800
Thank you ! I got another question...
Ive been making a studio desk and I want to paint to matte white the raw MDF.
What type of paint do you recommend with what primer? Im a beginner :)
Have a look at my video on how to seal mdf for a gloss finish. The same sealing principles apply for matte.
Brad, dig your videos. Using the same brand of paints and spraying gloss over 2-3 coats of mat on die cast metal i seem to end up most of the times with a roughish small lumpy finished look. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
Why are you starting with matte in that case?
Brad Angove The restoration procedure shown on this model used the matt then gloss. So will try just gloss and hopefully get the same result. Thanks for the reply.
Matte has additive that can make the finish less clear. I don’t recommend doing your build up work with matte.
Okay then would you recommend a metal Prima undercoat before applying say 3 coats of gloss.
It depends on what paint you’re using. Most painting systems have a metal compatible primer available.
Recently purchased base coat spray paint from automotive touch up
My question is do you know if their paint is compatible with either eastwood or spray max clear coats?
do you know what kind of paint it is?
@@BradAngove no I don't know to be honest
I can’t say for sure then, but it is probably an acrylic type that would work fine with those clear coats.

I sprayed the outside of my grill using rustoleum satin and some areas are shiny and other not so much. What can I do to make it even through?
Sand it smooth and spray another coat and keep it even. If you have heavier spots in your paint they will tend to gloss out more.
@@BradAngove
Thank you! I actually painted with semi gloss instead. Can I paint over it with satin?
Yes. Just let it dry abs sand smooth.
@@BradAngove
Can I use automobile primer over the semi gloss and then spray satin over it to avoid sanding?
Why do you want to avoid sanding? You don’t need to sand it off. You just need to sand it a bit so the new paint will stick.
What grit of sandpaper would you recommend?
For what?
@@BradAngove I already got my answer after writing this. But thanks for responding
???? Can I put USC SprayMax 2K Glamour High Gloss Aerosol Clear over acrylic lacquer clear coat or over acrylic lacquer color paint ????
Yes, as long as you allow ample drying time.
Thanks for all those greats videos. I've been watching a lot of your video to find out how to paint my guitar and I'm starting to have an idea of the direction I want to go to but I have some questions.
I bought an old Ibanez EX 360, it's probably a 1990 model. I want to make the body look like a RGD4327. There's a black matte richlite top and the body is mahogany clear coated. The body of mine is basswood so I'm thinking about staining it and making a matte paint on the top.
So my questions are:
-If I stain the part that I'm going to paint matte afterward, will it cause problems? Should I stain only the side and the back and make sure that I don't exceed it?
-What coat should I use for the stained part?
-Is it okay if I use the Rust-oleum flat black with the Spray Max 2k Clear Matte?
-And finally, is there a way to make the matte part more durable?
You can stain and then paint over as long as you use compatible products. It’s best to do a rest piece if you’re not sure.
You can use the matte 2K over the rustoleum painters touch. That will make it more durable. It’s also likely to work over most stains.
@@BradAngove thanks for the quick respond, you’re the best. Does oiled stain is compatible with rustoleum? Or does water based stain is better?
I’d go water based with rustoleum.
What if you spray krylon which sticks over any coat
I hope you’re joking about the krylon
cant wait to see your video on what paints are compatible. lol joking. great content thanks.
Haha yeah, I’m sure I’ll need to go into more depth on that again at some point.
I have a question.. can I spray a matte finish over a slightly glossed resin mask?
You would want to sand it first so that the matte will stick. Probably 800 grit.

What kind of paint?

Thank you soooooooo much for this tip. I hired a painter to patch an investment property. Today I realize that I gave him egg shell and the original paint is flat. I have an open house in two days! It looks awful. It's interior acrylic latex. What spray do I buy to fix this asap?
Don’t spray inside a house. The overspray will just make a mess, and won’t blend properly. Get some fine scotch brite (grey) or some 0000 steel wool and scuff the eggshell areas gently to reduce the sheen and then see if you need to roll on a bit of matte overtop.
@@BradAngove ok I'll try that tmrw. Fingers crossed! Thanks so very much!
What about a matte sealer over glossy venetian plaster?
What about it?
@@BradAngove I was wondering if you had experience using a matte sealer or even a lacquer or varnish over a polished integral plaster top coat as a way to reduce the installations sheen. I'm unsure if it's a stable and durable or even appropriate solution.
I’m not sure, but if you’re coating over gloss you need to make sure you sand first regardless.

will the gloss stay glossy if i spray it over matt clear???
Yes.

Thank you.
hey brad. can you do video on what type of wax to get satin black? and is it possible to get satin black with gloss black stripes? and does. satin black have polished spots like matte black does
Satin black will also get the polished spots. Luckily, I already have videos on these topics. Have a look at my video on how to turn a gloss finish matte or satin. Also have a look at my video on painting matte and gloss patterns.
thanks man
I’ll see what I can do.
So this was posted 2 years ago, not sure if anybody is monitoring this and will be able to answer my question or not, I have searched high and low for an answer to this question.
I make wood signs, I've already finished the writing on it and I sprayed a gloss clear coat, I don't like the way it looks and I cannot sand it or I'll have to start over, can I spray matte clear over that? If anybody's monitoring this page and can answer me that would be awesome.
Ty
Yes. Actually if you’re building up clear it’s better to use gloss, then finish off with matte. For clarity though, you will have to sand it a little bit for the matte to stick. Use 800 grit and be gentle. Just to scuff it up. New paint doesn’t stick to gloss properly.
YUP!! Loved the paint porn music by the way, LOL.
wow who knew cool
Is it OK to send some pictures.I just finished using the spray max matte finish. It's great so far. A screw driver slipped and no scratch.
Sure you can send pictures. Use the Facebook or Instagram links below.
So I'd need to sand my gloss helmet and then buy a Matt clear finish to make it Matt?
Correct.
My stuff always crackles when i clear with semi gloss on a gloss paint smh its killing my production
Do you sand your gloss first?
@@BradAngove no! So if i sand the paint i the "color" wont change once i apply the clear coat?
@@gabrieldelacruz9015 Correct. And if you don't sand a gloss coat before painting over it, usually you will have problems.
Hi can you do gloss red and spay with flat cler
Yes, if you let the red dry fully and sand lightly before applying the clear.
@@BradAngove light like 1500 grid water sand paper?
No, light as in gently. I would use 800 grit for that. 1500 is too smooth and you risk the clear not bonding properly.
This was very vague. You didn't specify the durability of the matte clear coat after being applied on top of each type of of paint, satin, semi-gloss, gloss etc. Examples would have been great. In the end, you simply stated to scuff the paint before applying matte clear coat and that it's possible it won't work.
The durability doesn’t change based on what sheen it’s being applied over.
Just take fine steel wool to gloss to make it matte
Haha that’s kinda true. Not quite the same, but can work depending on the circumstances.
You Are Awsom
Thank you.
You should give your fanbase a name, how about Gustavo
Gustavo? I did not see that coming...
Lovely well Thanks anyway
I’m guessing you’ve seen my video on how to get an even coat of paint with spray cans?
I have
Doing that from a couple different angles is how I get the best finish that I’m able to kn large surfaces with metallic spray cans.
@@BradAngove oddly enough I ran my hand over the top of the copper paint and it was so strange because a film of black dust or I guess maybe it was the dark pigment from the copper paint was actually settled on the top of the table so I took my trusty Dyson and vacuumed all the dust off and then a polishing cloth to the metallic paint and holy cow it looks amazing
Haha ok. Yeah, that’s overspray. Also, you were probably just a touch further away than necessary when you sprayed it. I guess I never really got into detail about that in my videos.
Glad to hear you’re happy with it now.
Sorry but I do not do either of those.
Either of what?
Facebook or Instagram It's not a big deal. I used your trick when you did the rust effect - I used gloss black satin black semigloss black I just sprayed over it and let the paint float down on it. Sort of kind of like a insect smog effect LOL then since I wanted a flat black I finished it with that Max 2K Matte finish. It broke my heart to use a $25 can of spray paint but that is exactly what I did. The fret board is black also. I added some chrome screws for decoration. I like it. Flat finish is not all that easy and not as tough as gloss but the Spray Max held up to a screwdriver slip. So any way combined a lot of your ideas. Take care
