    I have an expensive caravan with a matte finish paintwork. However, in Australia we have these F&&&cking birds that have acid in their droppings that causes damage if not cleaned straight away. How would I fix that stain after removal and what can I spray on the caravan to have that protection?
    Thanks mate

    • @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing

      Yeah, birds are the worst. We have some type of coastal bird that comes to our shop each spring to mate on the roofs of the buildings here in this industrial park. For about a month, everything outside gets splatted with bird droppings. So I feel your pain. The issue you have, is once damage has taken place, the only remedy is a chemical cleaning and if the paint is physically deformed, then no amount of chemical cleaning will undo the damage.
      As for protection, our Matte Coating Pro is about as stout as you can get when looking for a ceramic coating for matte paints. But even with this coating or ANY brand of coating, or protection product, my guess based upon experience is nothing is going to prevent damage from the acids found in bird droppings. The only sure way to prevent damage is to prevent the bird droppings from getting onto the paint. This same thing goes for glossy paint. It's a real problem.
      I once detailed only ONE HALF of a 1991 e34 BMW M5 for the 2002 Bimmerfest in California. At some point during the day the hood was down, and I just wiped off the entire hood to remove any light, accumulated dust to make sure it looked clean as people kept coming over and inspecting the before and after results.
      After wiping the hood down, someone asked me a question, I was standing by the drivers front tire with my back to the car facing the person and answering their questions.
      *We talked for less than 10 minutes, probably less than 5 minutes.*
      After talking to the person, I turned around to look at the hood that I had just wiped down previously and lo and behold there was a fresh bird dropping on the polished and waxed side of the hood.
      I quickly used a spray detailer and an microfiber polishing towel to remove the bird dropping. After removing the bird dropping, I inspected the area where it had landed for any signs of etching. To my surprise, the bird dropping had started to etch the paint, there was a spot where the paint had a definite stain and imprint from the Uric Acid in the bird dropping. *Less than 10 minutes and probably less than 5 minutes!*
      Don't know what the bird had been eating but this opened my eyes as to how fast the acid in a bird dropping can cause damage to a car's finish. The time I spent answering a question for an attendee of the show wasn't very long... but it didn't take very long for the acid to go to work corroding the clear layer of paint.
      This particular BMW was also used on the front label from a product Meguiar's used to make called SwirlX - click the link below to see a picture.
      *themikephillipsforum.com/media/swirlx_mike_phillips1-jpg.6661/full*
      This probably isn't very helpful but - keep a matte-safe spray detailer and some clean microfiber towels in your Caravan and as soon as you discover a bird dropping, carefully remove it ASAP. Besides that, undercover parking is always a blessing.

Unfortunately I did not know about Dr. B's matte specific products and bought the cheaper product from CG's. Yep, you get what you pay for and a bicycle throwing dirt and grime shows up after every ride on matte paint. For someone in the field like myself, frequently dealing with construction sites and conditions where dust, sand, and vegetation can cause minor scratches, I’m interested in a finish that’s less prone to showing these imperfections. Would a matte or satin finish be more effective in concealing micro-scratches? I’m not looking for a finish that stays flawless but rather one that minimizes the visibility of everyday wear. Additionally, could applying five layers of clear coat enhance the durability and resilience of the paint job?

    • @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing
      @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing 2 місяці тому +1

      Let me answer your questions out-of-order. If you think you would want to pay a body shop to spray five layers of CLEARCOAT paint over matte paint, you might as well buy a glossy painted car. Even if the car is new, and in mint condition, any reputable body shop is going to SAND down the matte paint on your new car/truck in order to repaint and basically, you're talking about simply getting a custom paint job.
      As for your first question - if you're looking for a paint system that will not easily show micro-scratches, then perhaps a matte white paint job would work for this, but you still need to be careful. In the real-world, if you want a low maintenance paint COLOR that will make it more difficult to see micro-scratches, then go for Silver Metallic. The metallic flake will make it more difficult for your eyes to focus on the absolute top surface, but instead your focus will be on the metallic flake - thus you won't see micro-scratches as easy.
      That or next time you buy a work rig, maybe have some company that does bed liners, paint the outside of the truck with bed liner. My friend Dennis Gage did this with his old Ford ranch truck, looked awesome.
      Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips

    • @DrBeasleys
      @DrBeasleys  2 місяці тому +1

      Hey Peter! While matte finishes don't show micro-scratches quite as much as glossy paint, larger scratches tend to stick out more and can't be removed through polishing. So while things like wash marks and general wear aren't as visible, an isolated hairline-type scratch might be more of a visual nuisance.
      Adding additional clear is definitely great for protecting the base coat and body metal in the case of a serious gouge, but it won't necessarily provide additional scratch resistance. You just have more "wiggle room" before an abrading object cuts through the clear coat.

    • @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing

    Regarding gloss products not being compatible with matte finishes. What if the vehicle (in this case a motorcycle) has both gloss and matte finishes. Should I be covering the matte panels when washing the bike with "regular" soap?

    • @DrBeasleys
      @DrBeasleys  7 місяців тому +1

      If you have a vehicle or bike with both glossy and matte surfaces, you want to use a matte-safe soap. Matte-safe soaps are compatible with gloss, but not the other way around. If you were to use a glossy soap on matte, you would need to clean the matte paint sections again immediately after to remove any wax or silicone the glossy wash left behind.

    • @MikePhillips-Dr.Beasleys
      @MikePhillips-Dr.Beasleys 6 місяців тому

      Very carefully. I'm not being factious, I'm being serious and the way to avoid getting any wax onto the matte stripes is to go slow and work carefully. You can even stay away from the stripes for about 1/8th inch to be extra careful. IF you do accidently get some wax on the matte stripes, have a clean, uncontaminated microfiber towel at the ready to wipe the stripe and try to get the wax off as soon as possible. As a long-time detailer, I've detailed a lot of cars like this and the first best thing you can do is SLOW down and be careful.
      The next option you have is use some low-tack masking tape to tape-off the matte stripes to protect them, but even if you do this, you should still slow down and work around the taped edges carefully. Once you stain matte - it's hard to recover from this type of damage.
      One more option would be to skip using car wax all together and use a ceramic coating. You must STILL be careful but at least ceramic coatings are clear, like water unlike car wax that is opaque.

    How do you spot treat bird poop without washing (or ruining) the entire finish?
    Second, does there need to be a "breaking in" wash for the first time I wash my new matte car? Or do I just do all the same you're saying here

    • @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing
      @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing 5 місяців тому +1

      The safest way I know to remove bird droppings, especially if they have dried, is to take a clean, microfiber towel and get it wet with clean water. Next, fold it 4 ways and place it directly on top of the dried bird dropping.
      Next, take a glass or bottle of water and pour water onto the microfiber towel to flood it with water. Once the towel is fully wet and can hold no more water allow about a minute to go by so the water can dissolve, emulsify and loosen the bird dropping and then carefully grab the bird dropping pile into the microfiber towel and lift straight-up off the paint. Then wash anything left off with clean water and a quality soap.
      There is no break-in time. The factory paint is baked on before the car is assembled. By the LENGTHY time it takes for the car to leave the manufacturing plant, arrive at a dealership and then have a person purchase it and drive it home - the paint is fully dried and cured and safe to wash.
      Also - the BEST time to ceramic coat your matte painted car is as soon as you get it home. Sooner is better.
      Hope that helps... -Mike Phillips
