Did anyone else just take a big sigh of relief after watching this? Thanks for covering this topic! Lets put creativity and exploration back in art :D
@@tessapfeiferart Gosh yes! 😌 Finally, hearing it out loud has given me some peace about it. I love so many creative processes that it is difficult to niche down.

As a consumer and small time artist myself, living in a world that is hell bent on pushing the narrative to produce epic quick and unrealistic cinematic videos and producing fast products in order to thrive, be "seen" or stay relevant...this video is refreshing and encouraging! And I think more artists need to revolt against the mainstream social media agenda or whatever it is that's pushing for this stuff and like you said focus on doing the work itself. Maybe produce epic pieces from time to time, but take the pressure off the self a little and remember why we're creating. By nature artists are perfectionist's....I can't imagine how much time and energy it would take to not only create and grow in your craftsmanship as an artist= that alone is a full time job but then run a business and produce epic cinematic films continuously .. .let alone single handedly is asking for burn out.. just my little opinion.
Revolt! Revolt! I am with you ✊
@@jenniferarnold2468 I am very prone to burnout, hence very basic videos. So more energy to paint (with lower capacity than most artists).
Ramble on Brooke, ramble on! Really liked the format. Glad you'll still treat on occasion too!
Good to hear Callum, thank you! 🙏
Hi, new subscriber. I'm so relieved to finally hear this out loud. I saw this quote a few months ago, "You can't force creatives into a box. If you try, they'll no longer be creative. And no one will want your box."
- Ryan Lilly.
I feel like sometimes the whole niche thing is like caging an animal. LOL, I don't know, but I used to build and flip furniture for an indoor vintage antique and unique gifts mall, and the requests for same piece or paint finishes really burnt me out. I even sold my watercolor landscapes that I used for staging with my furniture, and they became a grind, too. LOL, I have a lot of stamina for creating, but not for the same thing. I finally broke out of it and built pieces that were completely different, and they sold! You are right, if the work is good people will buy it. Please forgive the long comment, but the vlog resonates with me. Thanks for sharing.
Krista! Thanks for subscribing and I really appreciate your comment 🙏 I’m glad the message resonated with you because it also makes me feel not alone in this hahah. Stay creative and hope to see you around in future videos ☺️
@b.cormier You're very welcome! I hope you follow through with making a video on things to do with your practice art. I have a ton. Hahaha
Yes things to do with your practice art!
Personally I prefer the less scripted less cinematic videos- we are artists, not videographers. I find that newer artists or creators can feel so much pressure to be perfect, to spend weeks learning how to put together a flashy video, edit it to within an inch of its life, etc, that it loses all the spark. Or they miss the bigger issue of having a good topic, of being relatable, and most important just being yourself. Which is obviously a vital lesson in life as an artist in general, to be yourself and not feel overwhelmed with what others are doing. Like a couple of my tutorials have over a million views, and the videography and such is terrible because they were some of my earliest videos and I was just learning. But they’re popular because the content is good, people can learn from them despite the lack of anything fancy, me bumping the camera with my hands, etc. You covered the topic well, you didn’t ramble, no script needed. ❤️
This is so encouraging, thank you 🥹
And I totally agree, it’s hard feeling like we have to deliver top quality video content when our passion and specialty is visual art. I really appreciate your comment and thank you for the validation!!
idk, good videography helps for me. if someone has a camera and they aren't in focus, or it is Shakey, i lose the message. it doesnt have to be cinematic. but some understanding needs to be involved to allow the video to not be distracting at the very least so i see the message and not the video being messy. I have clicked out of videos from men and from women both, when the video goes in and out of focus constantly.. Videography, much like photography is also a visual art form.
This format is actually a great idea. Informal and it is relaxing and low key.
Thanks Andrew! Grateful for the feedback 🙏
Brooke, here's your niche..... "Paint what YOU like". Quality work will always have an audience. Great video
Thanks Trevor 🤗
I was feeling like my interest in multiple art mediums and crafts are getting out of hand. My ADHD head was about to explode with all the art career options I could take on hypothetically. Your calm voice silenced all the voices in my head for 15 mins. THANK YOU!!
That’s really nice to hear 🥹 I hope it gave you some peace of mind. The best niche is YOU
I think your thoughts on this topic are spot on. I actually like your new format much better than your other edited videos. I think you have a lot of meaningful things to say and I’m interested in hearing them. I don’t think you need to spend so much time making the videos fancy. I actually find the enhancements a little distracting. In other words, I’m giving you a big thumbs up with the new format and look forward to watching more episodes. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us.
Thank you so much! Happy to hear this feedback 🙏
I love this! I just went full-time as an artist, and this was just so relieving to hear! I just want to take time to explore and learn sometimes.
❤. Adaptability is your niche. I enjoy all of your work.
❤️❤️❤️
I adore your cinematic videos but being able to listen to this video AND pack my dishes away at the same time really was a morning productivity win for me 😜
Hahah I love that, thanks Michelle! 🫶
I really love this format! Very refreshing. I love your cinematic work. But I love this as well since it gives you the ability to just talk and go in depth on certain topics, without having to worry about engaging the viewer with all the different frames and angles and such. It gives more focus to what you're saying.
Really glad you think so 🙏 thank you Olivia!
Thank you for this video. We need more of this kind of encouragement. There’s too many people telling you not to do things, but I think being an artist you need to do what makes you happy and stop putting restrictions on ourselves. I’ve been painting for 10 years and still not found my niche and to be honest I’ve stopped looking!😊
Thanks Victoria! ☺️ that’s great to hear
Loved this format, Brooke. I hope you continue to do these relaxed, unscripted, vids. I didn't find it rambling at all - it felt like a comfortable conversation. I was also able to hand-wash some clothes while I was listening, since I didn't feel that I had to "watch." LOL. So very efficient for me! I totally agree that "niche" is not important. People are way too formulaic in their approach - always wanting to find that one "thing" that's going to make them successful. Being your unique self is what will always make people successful in the long-term.
Well said Janina! And I’m glad I could accompany you while you do your laundry 😌 thank you for watching and sharing your perspective!
🗣️🗣️🗣️ "If the art is good, you'll find an audience for it" 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Obviously that's not true. There are tons of good artists with good work that hasn't sold.
I think it is true! I didn’t say “if the art is good, you will sell it” I’m taking about finding an audience and that also requires sharing your work. If the art is not selling but it is “good work” then it’s because of a marketing issue or a pricing issue
@@b.cormier I think it would be really enlightening if you did an aspect about this side of things!
I like what you said about working on the quality of whatever we find ourselves doing in a season. I feel like the niche or the overall style is actually easier to see when looking back as opposed to imagining what it might be at the beginning of any career really. Sure you have a vision in the moment, you obsess over certain styles or techniques, and that makes us better. But it will inevitably morph.
Well said! 👏
Love this and definitely excited for videos about selling your "practice" art. 🥰 🖌️
Good to know! Thank you 🥰
i loved this type of format! love from italy!!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Love this type of content. And the topic as well 👍👍
Glad to hear it! Thank you 🙏
i LOVE your updated website format! Looks great!
Thank you so much! I love it too 🥰
Well said! Love your videos with the editing and all, but this one felt more like a discussion and it was great! Good idea to save the fancy ones for once in a while. I can't imagine how you manage to do it all! Time management and how to avoid burn out could be a great topic :)
love the idea of just talking! It gives you more time and is giving us a video of much value too! win win
Thank you for the feedback! 🙏 glad to hear it
I love this style of just having a chat. It definitely complements your cinematic videos. Yep. Editing. Takes. FORRRREVVVVER!... 🥰
Hahaha GOOD I’m so glad to hear it 🤗 thanks for watching!
it's really interesting hearing your journey 🥰
Thank you! I’m happy to hear that 🥰
Great video! Thank you! Not only did I have a huge sigh of relief about not finding my niche but ALSO I loved that your video was less scripted, etc. All the tech stuff has intimidated me from starting my own channel. A more relaxed and non-edited video, I could probably handle!
So happy to hear that 🙌 and yes this type of video is much more manageable haha
I'm really enjoying these more unscripted art chats you've done recently. There's plenty of scripted and cinematic art content out there already, so these being more candid are a fresh pleasure. Please keep these up!
Thank you! 🥹 really glad to hear this
Paint what you love to paint. It will translate into better work. My favorite artists have a variety of styles and often work in series.
I appreciate the format of this video. I'm trying to improve my videos myself, and being stuck on the "how to grow your channel" side of the algorithm is pretty exhausting. It's refreshing to see videos that aren't hyper edited and optimized have an audience. You're such an inspiration!
Thank you! Really happy to hear this feedback as I think this style video is SO much more manageable haha and I think it will help me be more consistent too. Hopefully the algorithms give us some grace 🙏
Brooke, you nailed it on the head! Create and improve....move through the process. It is a journey; it's never about the current piece of work, but the next and the next...The practice perpetuates your perfect work.
Very well said 🙌
Thank you - what a relief
Thanks so much for watching! 🙏
keep "flappin your gums" Brooke!! love whatever you post
Hehehe thank youuuu 🫶
Great video!🎉 As someone who enjoys painting, it never crossed my mind that niching down was something to aim for (mind you, I just enjoy painting-it’s not my job), but it makes a lot of sense.
I hope you continue making videos like this-I really enjoy hearing from a full-time artist’s perspective on important aspects like this!
If it’s helpful (totally unrequested advice!), something I’ve noticed from creators who make videos like this is that small background changes-like swapping out a painting, flowers, or even the whole background-can make a subtle but engaging difference. As a viewer, I find myself unintentionally looking for what’s different each time. It keeps things fresh without requiring a major cinematic change or production, it could help make the space feel intentional and dynamic.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked the video and thanks for the suggestion - I’ve never thought about that!
I plan to film some more of these podcast style videos outside, so maybe that’s something will also be more engaging!
Love the new format. Feels more like having a tea chat with a friend.
Yes!! We will be chatting much more over tea this year ☺️
Love it and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
Thanks Alissa! 🥰
Thanks Brooke from over here on Vancouver Island BC. Just fussing about with that “ niche” thing myself. Don’t like it, it’s boring. 😊 Variety is way more fun.🎉 Love this format. Take care! ❤
Haha amen! Thanks for watching Sandy 🫶
This was really cool to listen to. Thanks. Nice to meet you. I'm Carla from Toronto ❤. I needed to hear this. 🙏
Thanks Carla! 🥰
Whatever the format, it is always a pleasure to watch and listen to you
Thank you! 🙏
That's a really good question. Thank you for answering it. I'm also a believer of doing what I love and I want to do more art.
🫶!
Hallelujah on the whole unnecessary to 'chase a niche' dialogue. I totally agree Brooke - and this format is super. What ever you share here is so relatable...and you're such an inspiring and intelligent young woman, you actually can't get this wrong however you approach it. Keep onward...I love your artwork :)
That’s so nice, thank you so much Michele! 🙏
Brooke -- I’m so happy you’re intending to make more videos like this!!! I love when you get chatty, you’re full of insights and it always leaves me super inspired.
I used to rely mostly on commissions for my income and I think it stopped me from being creative as well, plus it caused huge burnout. Now I teach art to kids (in the comfort of my own home!) which is not only more lucrative financially, but it’s also so fun making art alongside them. Gives me a chance to just be free & silly, and I often look at the work I created at the end of the lesson and am surprised by how much I like it.
On that note - have you considered hosting art classes for kids?? They would absolutely adore you! 🩷
Thanks so much Erin! 🤗 Teaching kids sounds so fun and rewarding, I’ve never considered it but perhaps I should!
loved the conversation even though I am not in the field, as an artist myself it's always great to have those insights ...
Thanks so much for watching! I think it can apply to areas outside of art as well ☺️
YES ! I totally feel you on this! This is such an interesting and important topic. It's crazy how universal this struggle is for artists - balancing what we love with all the other responsibilities life throws our way.
I actually just uploaded my first episode yesterday about this exact issue! I was trying to find some inspiration from my artist friends who seem to have found a bit of balance.
Thanks so much for sharing this - it's comforting to know we're not alone in this! And I love how genuinely you express yourself on screen - it's really authentic 9:03
Such a nice comment to read 🥹
Glad we’re not alone in this and so comforting to hear other artists feel the same way. Thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate it 🫶
Omg Brooke i loooove your content so so much as a growing artist myself, and i think that it would be so nice if you started a podcast, because then we artists can listen to you while painting! (mostly what i do) especially if you have so many things to talk about i thing starting a podcast would be great for all of us! I will be weaiting patiently till that day comes 😌 luv u
Awe thank you so much!! 🥰 perhaps I will consider a product in the future!
Love this format!!! Drinking tea while I listen, and this is so peaceful.
Also, I received the cactus painting, “ouch”, and it’s a nice addition to the office.
I love to know that we’re sharing tea time together! And I’m so happy to hear that, thanks for your support 🙏
Again, Brooke, a lovely video with some world-worn wisdom and warmly rambled insights. Please keep them coming. Always a pleasure hearing you share your thoughts and experiences.
Thanks David! I appreciate it ☺️
I like this 'less but better' philosophy both in your career approach and your video..from letting go abit of finding your 'own unique style' to 'jump cuts and editing'..this video was super chill and useful. Thanks Brooke!
Really glad to hear this, thank you! 🙏
Love this format. Please do more. Your so talented and relatable
Thanks Linda! 🥰
Love this new style of video... perfect for listening to whilst painting! Also love the cinematic ones as well but this is great for multitasking. ❤
Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate it 🤗
Selling your practice sounds like such a great topic! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it 😊 And I also agree that quality > nicheing down. Because ultimately algorithms reflect people’s interest more than anything. Making a consistent portfolio will help algorithms categorize you, but whether or not people stay depends on the quality of your content.
Additionally plenty of painters are known for their distinctly different “eras” and collections and lots of collectors take pride in having a work from an artist’s “_____ Period”.
That is so true! I just exited my mushroom era hahah. Thank you so much for watching, I loved reading this comment 🙏
Right off the top- 100% get where you are coming from with the heavy edit video content production. I am right there with you for producing some more podcast style videos to lighten the labour and share more of what may be of value to others.
Still excited about making the complex video pieces but not every upload. 🥂 to creating more sustainable work loads
Sustainability is so key!!
Wonderful video! And just on time because that's my problem right now...and I came to the same conclusion that you confirmed and my heart is much lighter now. I am already excited to watch your next video :)
I’m glad to hear it Alexandra ☺️🙏
I totally agree, it's a relief to hear from you. I haven't established a theme or a medium that defines me for a couple of decades and as you say: that work is no longer with me, a lot of it has been sold.
Maybe the only thing I care about is that what I do is an easily commercial subject. I can't (or maybe I can find my market) keep drawing monsters hahaha like when I was a teenager.
I liked this mini podcast. Greetings.
Thanks Mauricio! 🙏 There’s definitely an audience out there for monsters, I’ve seen some wacky stuff haha
This is a cool setup and lovely nuggets on art with warm beverage and humor.❤😊
Thank you!🙏
Love the pace of this content! Even though highly edited videos are more flashy and entertaining- my ADHD-ish brain really processes and remembers this style of content better. Awesome stuff and thanks for the advice!
Thank you for this feedback Kevin! It’s really good to know 🙏
What a refreshing ramble! Thank you!
Thanks for watching Lauren! 🙏
I appreciate this format. I need to put on washing and do the dishes AND hear from you.
So glad I can accompany you while you do your chores 😜
I just found your channel like a week and half ago or two I think and I am thankful for it. I love the format of how you do your channel and social media. It has given some insights on how to apply this to my own path too as I am trying to get into selling the work or making my own stuff. Really appreciate it :D Love this format of video so its very informative.
Thanks Brian! 🙏 really happy that you’re finding it helpful!
Wonderful message and great format! Thank you!
Thank you Jeremy! Glad you like the format ☺️
Thank you for this video Brooke 😊 I really like the podcast style and hearing your thoughts on art things. It’s great to see you succeeding without having to niche down because I struggle to do that so much!! Every time I’ve tried to stick to a niche, I end up getting fed up after about 2 weeks and then I end up starting something completely different 😂
Thanks again :)
Hahah that is the artist in you! We get bored so easily sometimes 🙈
Glad you liked the video - thank you for watching 🫶
I love this video format! Allows me to watch or just listen when I want to watch while doing something else like eating, working, etc.
Perfect! That’s what I was picturing. I always like to watch UA-cam when I’m doing other things haha
Everything I do is intuitive….
Art…
Poetry…
Jewelry….
I just give it all away ….
I love your work and love how you think & love your videos
You will naturally develop your own niche after you’ve explored to your hearts content….
💗💗💗
Intuition is everything! Thanks for watching 🥰
@@b.cormier your intuition is leading you to do what you’re doing now…exactly as it should be for you… I went in the opposite direction… letting loose first… no discipline…that’s why I admire you because you are very disciplined…and know techniques…. I know nothing & need to learn like you have….
Really liked the format!
Glad to hear it! 🙏
Agree 100% - I've been painting all my (long) life and still haven't found my niche. I've always felt that it must get boring to always do the same old, same old. I like to try new things and experiment with stuff!
Amen! 🙌
the best format and obvs loved your words.
🙏🙏🙏
Just finished watching and from beginning to end- out of any other art UA-cam-er I follow, you Brooke are fitting like a 🧤
Ughhhhh that is so nice 🥹 thank you so much, really 🫶
@ 💕
This was really refreshing - thank you, Brooke! :)
Thanks for watching Sean! ☺️
In year five of painting I have given up with the niche idea. Thank you for that affirmation!
Hope you feel more free now too! 🙏
Love this. Ivye been considering this topic myself in the last months
I think it’s something all artists think about at some point! Good to get different perspectives in the mix
Yes very knowledgeable 🎉please continue making these type of videos ❤
Thanks for the encouragement 🫶
Love this format tbh I love listening to you talk about the topic but also your cinematic videos are so nice, have you considered outsourcing some of the editing to ease the work, it’s actually an amazing business investment and someone who’s really good at editing can do it for you in a fraction of the time, it’s common advice I’ve heard a lot from UA-camrs who have been in the industry for a while
Thank you! Happy you like it ☺️
And I knowwwww it’s been something I’ve been thinking about for a while, but I feel like the art is in the editing and I have a hard time giving that up haha. Maybe one day though! Just have to find someone with a similar vision
Love it Brooke! Keep 'em coming. Im always happy to watch whenever you decide to release a video :)
Thank you Corrine! 💛
Yay!! I’m so pumped to hear more from you, Brooke!
Thanks so much Jenna!! Looking forward to hanging out some more!
I totally agree with this. I had time to experiment with my art last year and the pressure to find “my voice” was real. Once I found out the journey IS all about, I also realized I didn’t want to be put in a box. Now, I’m not even trying. Only doing
I’m so happy to hear that, good for you!!
Yes, yes, yes! Thank you, my heart is still now. What a relief! 😅❤
🤗🙌
It’s great to hear more thoughts on your art practice and career! Great format!
Thanks so much! Happy to hear it 🤗
I just love your content, I think you have become my favorite youtuber ❤️
I would love to hear about how to start selling your art, where to sell, who to sell to, for how much, when you are just starting and truly have zero following.
I am a full-time musician, but I have been growing as an artist on the side and I am interested in selling my work, but not sure how to get it seen, and how to get sales on it. Thank you so much for your content, your light heartedness makes my days better, and I look forward to these chatty videos as well as your cinematic masterpieces 🙏🏻
Thank you so much! 🥹 that means so much. And thank you for the great ideas for future videos, I’m writing them down!
@b.cormier Ahh, I'm honestly fan girling a little bit to get a comment back from you. So silly 🙈 Thanks for responding, and you got a loyal subscriber from me 💪🏻
We love you girly!!!!! I love this structure video!!!! Do more of these!!! Everything you do is beautiful!!!!!!
Awwwwe 🥹🫶🫶
New subscriber here, hi! Watched some of your other videos and love your approach to your art and life it’s refreshing and optimistic. You also have a great sense of humour which I wonder how much that helps you on days when things aren’t going great or how you might not want them to. Looking forward to following your ongoing journey and celebrating it. Great advice about niche or style, I feel many put unnecessary pressure on themselves, myself included in trying to ‘find’ that, I think our style is ultimately there all along, it’s just who we are baked into whatever we create ❤
Thanks so much Andy! And welcome! 🤗 I think having a sense of humour can carry you through the dark times haha
I agree that worrying about a niche is not super important. Learning what you want to learn about is more important, I think! I have an aesthetic but not a niche. It allows me to work with many different styles and mediums without having to fit in a little box…but there is still something that ties it all together. My art mentor works in every creative style under the sun and encouraged me to learn about and try history’s great artists and movements, and that made me a much better artist than focusing so hard on a niche.
That’s awesome! I like how you articulated that: you don’t have a niche but you have an aesthetic. That way your work can still look cohesive all together! Thanks for sharing 🤗
Hi Brooke, I also feel that improving one's skills is the thing.
Totally 🙌
Love you stuff. Please store your brushes horizontal! I have brushes since I was in 5th grade, you can really make them last. I know you see lots of brushes stored incorrectly but, I actually learned it in art school.
Thank you! 🙏 and good to know, though these brushes are just props haha (they’re all my rejects)
I loved this video! You showed up in my recommended and now I’m subscribed! I love everything you said about niching down. And I couldn’t agree more! I enjoy doing so many art forms, from knitting to pottery and I’m a newbie painter. I love doing each one! Sometimes one more than the other. I wouldn’t survive if I had to be in a niche box. 😅
Welcome!! Thank you for watching and subscribing and being a fellow creative who can’t stick to one thing 😂
@ You’re very welcome! I’m so glad I’m not the only one! 🙌😅💞
This was such a timely video thank you!! 🙏🏽
I’m happy to hear it ☺️ thanks for watching!
I look forward to more videos like this one :)
Thanks Annika! I’m already onto the next 😈
I like this format! Very nice :)
Thank you! 🙏 happy to hear it!
I have been the anomaly for all of my art career (10 yrs+). I have never believed in the niche mentality. It's completely useless and makes you less versatile and resilient. An artist, creator, designer, (whatever you may be), that explores their curiosities expands their horizons. You needn't worry about the collectors you have now. I always say, collectors and supporters should be synonymous. If they don't support your journey, they were never really with you in the first place. The best advice I was given by my mentor is this: "Create until all the people who don't like you or what you make disappear. By then, all you're left with is people who want to shout your name from rooftops."
Such great advice 🙌
I really needed to hear this! Thank you for sharing your journey. Loved the free structure format.
Thanks so much Debra! 🙏
Thank you. I love watching your short videos.Very informative 😊👏❤️
Thank you! I’m happy to hear it 🤗
@ is it possible in one your program talk about artists block, long list of inspiration still have fear of starting projects.. It's my big issue now.🙏
thank u! amazing video and love the talking vibe, also working on my craft and just listening, :) I do totally agree that as a creative, you should do what feels good at the moment, Sometimes I take a detour and at that moment im thing like what im I doning this is not what I should be doing, be most of the time I take something from that detour that I didn't want to miss or just needed for my own sake of mind :)
Thank you for watching! And yes, you’ll always learn something from a detour 🙌
You just mentioned that people comment when you post to your broadcast channel. I am on your broadcast channel, but I am not able to comment? I’m liking this new style of video. 🇨🇦
I had turned on replies just for the one post asking what I should talk about! But then I got overwhelmed afterwards with responses and had to turn them off again lol 😅 I can’t keep up with comments all the time and it causes a wee bit of anxiety haha, maybe something to discuss in a future video!
This format works great! You have amazing advice. Love it ❤

Could you record a video about where and how to find the customers for the paintings?
I agree with you 100%. Even if you look at the Group of 7, their art styles changed over the course of their art careers. I also think that when you stay niche-free, there is more opportunity to grow and explore. BTW - I also know Tim.
Totally! 🙌
You're wonderful! Thanks for sharing ❤
