Thank you for making and sharing your 4 Q&A videos on feline diabetes. I have a much better understanding of my cat's newly diagnosed disease and will be better able to have a discussion with my veterinarian.

    Very informative.

My vet was very insistent that I test at home to get a clearer picture of the true BG. The stress of being at the vet and doing a curve can give hugely misleading readings. Monitoring at home with a BG meter should be encouraged by all vets to those that have a diabetic cat.

Could you please advice. Earlier this year our cat starting loosing lots of weight, after several tests it was found out he was diabetic. He was started On insulin. He has to have blood tests about every two weeks. He used to love going out and about, but sadly he hasn’t been able to climb or jump. So has stayed inside. The vets has suggested keeping him on purlina dry food which he ha been on, but changing different kinds of it. We have been advised to try him on purine with extra Fibre. He gains about between 200-500 g every two weeks which vet says is to much to gain. He had lost over half his body weight in the early days. However we have cut his food amount down . He currently does. Not have wet food and never has. Since mid sept his bills have amounted to almost 2000. Pounds. The vet has not mentioned about changing insulin. Being an ex nurse myself we would have done this in humans. But wants us to talk maybe over the phone as it’s cheaper to someone that may be able to help more than she has been able to. My biggest concern is this is going to be another ongoing amount of money as well as the vets fees, and I can’t help but wonder in which way a talk will really help. I think yesterday when blood results came back his sugars we were told was 625… ? Higher than they were back in the early days when he was not having insulin st all. And he is gaining weight not loosing it. I was unsure if he could infact be on a wrong insulin. Poor piuss can’t tell us how he feels so it’s a guessing game a bit. Vet has checked for pancreatitis. This was clear. Not wanting to sound mean in anyway, we would do all we can for him. However costs are high and with feeling we are not really going anywhere, I would so appreciate your thoughts on this. Before we agree to committing to spending loads more with no more results. There are only two vets in our practice that deal with diabetic animals, the other vet in mainly in their other surgery, so really we can’t ask for another opinion from another vet in the practice. Your comments to me just made so much sense. Thank you. Look forward to any suggestions. He is currently on 5 units twice a day. I am not able to see a name on the insulin pen, and the new cartridges come loosely packed in a bag so no box with a name on there either. Some advice would be wonderful,

What do you do if they get ketones? How do you treat them? Are they always a result of too little insulin??
