  • Homemade Cat Food with Chicken that turned our Finicky Felines into Ravenous Land Sharks... We still use some dry cat food, but it is the same stuff that our cats stuck their noses up at and picked at for the last couple of years. I think you'll find this homemade food is much cheaper than even basic dry kibble!
    Below is an ingredient list and supply list:
    (I've included Amazon affiliate links to some of them, especially the ingredients and equipment I ordered from Amazon myself! And, full disclosure, I would get a small commission if you were to purchase a product through any of the links.)
    To ensure you have what you need on hand, here is the basic ingredients:
    Bone-in chicken quarters (legs, thighs, etc. You need dark meat. Bone-in is less expensive and more nutritious when you cook it down. The drawback: picking the bones out of the cooled cooked chicken.) 10 pounds
    White Rice - for this cat food recipe I used 2.5 cups. Some people use oatmeal, and this is optional, but my cats LOVE white rice.
    Pumpkin - I used roasted pumpkin (homegrown), but canned pumpkin puree will also work. DO NOT use pumpkin pie filling - cats shouldn't eat sugar. With 14 lbs of turkey, I use about 6-8 cups. This is really good for cat digestion and urinary tracts.
    Ground Flax Seed - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. This is for protein, fiber, and healthy fats that cats need, and it thickens the food right up - it looks a bit soupy at first. Make sure it is finely ground. Brown or golden flax seed meal will work. Whole flaxseed: amzn.to/3Sugr9t Ground flaxseed: amzn.to/48FE844
    Here is a list of some of the equipment I use in this video along with links to them on Amazon:
    16 qt stock pot: amzn.to/495mBlA
    24 qt stock pot: amzn.to/3HOieQB
    Mesh Strainer: amzn.to/3U9hlJs
    Do not use salted or seasoned anything in your cat's food - too much salt really damages their kidneys, and common human seasonings like garlic and onion actually destroy their red blood cells. Yikes! It's a short ingredient list. We filmed this real time, but sped up the part where my daughter and I pull the chicken - that is by far the most labor intensive part... but don't try and skip it with boneless meat. Our feline friends need the high fat dark meat, and their bodies get additional nutrition from the other goodies that are extracted from the bones during the extended cooking process.
    Let me know how it goes! Our 9 kitties give it 2 paws up with a Meow for extra points!

    I have to throw my two cents in. I just clicked on this video and then started looking through through the comments and I have to say WOW. I have seen less emotional outbursts on political and social issue videos. This is cat food. Every point some of you are going in on this woman for, she addresses and she gives you HER reasons why she makes HER cat food the way she does. If you don't like "cooked" food MOVE ON. I thank you ,How To Really Cook Lady, for this helpful informative video. I have a finicky cat and I know that in the end my making her just chicken is better thank 98% of the processed crap we get at store (human food as well!!). So, as I learn more about nutrition for both of us, we will grow healthier together!

    This is really a better idea than feeding commercial cat food!! I started cooking for my overweight 12 y.o. cat when he licked all the fur off one of his legs. Found out that food allergies was a probable cause. So I quit feeding him kibble and found a recipe online. The short story is that he 1) lost weight, 2) his fur became lush and soft, 3) he quit licking his leg and that fur grew back, and 3) he started playing like a kitten again! He lived to 18+!! I miss ol' Figaro.

      Figs’ Homemade Cat Food
      In a big stock pot (8 quarts or more) add in:
      3 packages of chicken hearts and gizzards, picked over and rinsed
      2-3 ounces of liver
      2-3 pounds of ground chicken or turkey
      1 beet, peeled and roughly chopped (for fiber)
      Water to 1 inch of top of ingredients
      Cover, bring to a boil then simmer for 1 hour with all the windows open if possible (this is very smelly stuff.). Cool to touch for a couple hours with the lid on. Grind the whole lot until smooth with a blending stick or in batches in the blender. Mix thoroughly then spoon into plastic containers and freeze. This made enough to feed Figs for about 2 - 3 weeks.@@debbiedebbie9473

    About 15 years ago I had skunks, possums, a boatload of stray hungry cats ( as the humane society was on the other side of the lake from my house). There were groundhogs, raccoons, you name it every species of animal that dwelled in the woods surrounding my house came out every evening searching for food. What I came up with was primitive, but I managed to keep them all well fed and the satisfaction I helped them survive the cold harsh Winters. I knew nothing about nutrition, all I knew I was doing my best with what I had to work with. I'd boil the chicken till it fell of the bone. Then remove the chicken and debone it. As I was doing that I'd throw in some plain white rice to the broth. When the rice was soft, tender and plump, I'd return the deboned chicken back to the broth and rice. It those animals alive. That was my goal and I achieved it. The possum was the cutest. He'd know what time I came home from work and be waiting for me under the dumpster

Since I am here 24/7 and am absolutely committed to them, the time is is no big deal. You can say whatever you want, but your cat NEEDS certain things to be healthy and happy. Do you know what any of them are? Whether or not you're willing to learn depends on how you might feel if your cat suddenly dies. If you want to keep them with you, you have to do right by them. That involves learning and trial and error. If you are lazy, stick with the canned cat food. Don't make it up.

      @Sarmatae1 Місяць тому

      @@frostflower5555 In order to feed your cats a raw diet, you have to know how a cat's body uses food, what it can and can't digest, and you have to add certain vitamins that they don't easily absorb from sources humans would. It's not as simple as going into your kitchen and whipping up something they like. Cats like almost anything. If you don't know what you're doing and aren't willing to put in the research...keep using canned food. It already contains everything they need. You can literally starve your cat to death. I've seen it. UA-cam is not the place to learn things like this. Your vet is.

    This is great. In Jamaica we fed our cats on mince meats from the butcher that came from underneath the electric meat saw. It was a mixture of meats and fish and sold in bags for a few dollars for pet food. We took it home and cooked it in a big pot and sometimes added bread, cornmeal, rice or table scraps. The cats were really muscled and very strong with almost no fat on their bodies to the point where I never knew what a primordial pouch was till I came to N. America.

    A couple little helpful tips that will make your project a lot easier. Use a large electric pressure cooker and run it through two Max cycles and let it depressurize naturally.
    No matter how you cook it, add a half a cup of apple cider vinegar at the beginning. This not only leeches all of the calcium and Morrow from the bones, it makes the bone very soft as well, if cooked the proper amount of time.
    Now all you need is a heavy duty stick blender or food processor to include the bone in the food.
    This works, I know I've tried. I even dry the bone sometimes and make my own bone meal for the garden. It crumbles real easy even when it's dried.🤗🤗🤗

      Same. I have a mama-cat that turned up on my carport 10 yrs ago, & 3 of her 10 yr old kittens. The old Tom I had at the time aged out & died a few years ago, but we too have a serious problem with strays & ferals.
      I brought two friendlies in about a year ago & one of my OG “kittens” just refuses to accept them, so those 2 have to live apart from the other 4. I occasionally space switch, have installed a screen door between rooms to prevent the fighting but permit exposure, & occasionally just turn everybody loose to see what will happen.
      I also have 4 outside, & maybe a 5th who turned up during our recent cold snap. He comes & goes, but he’s learning that the food supply here is reliable. The other 4 are a once-feral alleycat in his prime, & the completely feral young female w/ 2 kittens that he brought home last Fall. Neutering the tom did nothing to settle him down - he still enforces dominance in his territory around my house & looks after Adanedi (new mama/cat) & her kittens as he does so. I think #5 would be an established presence if not for George, but I basically try to stay out of the feline politics. I don’t permit bloodshed, but aside from that they need to be cats & I need to stay out of it.
      So that’s at least 11, & if that weren’t complicated enough I’m dealing with my mother’s estate along with her house & the contents. All of that is 75 miles away, & the house is 5,600 square feet that my folks spent a lifetime packing to the gunnels. The cat situation is complicated enough, it’s 11 cats with wildly varying degrees of socialization, & 5 of them live outside. I check on them several times a day & work with Adanedi as often as possible - she’s the most feral. The kittens are _not_ feral because I spend time with them, & of course George is George. The 150 mile round trips & working on that %*#%*!!^ house are absolutely getting in the way of bringing these guys together. I really need to be looking after them all together instead of as 3 distinct groups.
      … & I definitely need to address the burn-rate on their budget, so thanks. I’ll be trying this myself.

    If you can cook the bones down until they’re soft, you can run them through a bone grinder and make a very nice bone meal which can be added back into the food. It has calcium and the excellent nutrients that are in the bone marrow. And then you don’t waste any thing or risk having your cats choke on bones or have a perforation in the intestine.

    You definitely need an instant pot! 90 mins and the chicken is mush..including the bones which are actually beneficial if well boiled! You can tell by bending a bone, it will not snap and will be rubbery. I pulverize all (meat, skin, bone, guts, etc) in a food processor on pulse 5-6 times and call it good.

    • @JoannaTrautman
      @JoannaTrautman  2 роки тому +10

      Insta Pots are great! I think I mentioned how much faster the bone broth can be in a pressure cooker. I personally don't have one, simply because I use pressure canners for large batch food preservation, and I don't mind conventionally cooking things like this. I chose to pull out the bones, even after they reach the softened point for fear of choking hazards, and then use a stick blender on everything else, meat, organs (when I have them), skin, etc.

      I’ve also been using my instapot with a whole chicken and beef livers for 97 minutes. Then I run it all through my nutribullet. I include the broth which basically gels everything to make it a pate’, which my cats prefer. I wondered what more I should add. My kitties are 16 years old and can’t eat dry food anymore. Pumpkin and ground flaxseed! Rice! I’ll try this next time! Thank you!

      I have a quick question… I cooked the chicken in the oven and am finishing it with your recipe (with pumpkin and rice), BUT… was going to use the Instant Pot to finish, but didn’t know if I should remove all the grease that cooked out of the baking chicken. It seems like a LOT of grease, even though I tried to remove excess fat before baking. Thanks for your video and I hope you can answer my dilemma. I have only made bone broth with baked or roasted chicken before and only seeing your recipe this morning, I guess I THOUGHT I had that part down pat! Oops! I did not come back and look to see that you did not do that step until I was ready to continue. Thank you for your recipe and input. Next time, I’ll start right. It’ll save an unnecessary step anyway.

      @@JoannaTrautman thank you so much. I did go ahead and add it to the instant pot. I figured if you said to take it out that I could scoop it off the top of the bone broth before incorporating it into the food. I’m glad to know that’s another step I won’t have to take. LOL It’s always amazing to me how much fat there is and when I had a little dog, I left too much of the grease from the turkey that I made bone broth from and it made her very ill; the vet told me it caused pancreatitis, so I have tried to be careful since then with the level of fat. Anyway, I hear you and I’m glad that (from now on), I can eliminate that step of roasting, because as I said in my original question, it will certainly be quicker. Again, I thank you so much for your response and for your video instruction. I am praying my two (old) ferals like this food because they need it to live at this point. My inside cats are so picky that I know they’re not gonna touch it. They won’t even touch pieces of the roasted chicken I throw down to them when I’m cooking.… spoiled children,that they are.💕

    You want to make sure the pot of food cools down within 4 hours. Your refrigerator may not be able to do that and putting a large pot of hot food in the fridge will increase the temperature of the fridge. I'd suggest transferring the food to smaller containers or putting a large bag of frozen water in the pot to help it cool more quickly.

    • @JoannaTrautman
      @JoannaTrautman  2 роки тому +8

      Maika, absolutely! When I don't immediately pressure can process the food for long-term storage, there is a significant cooling process. There are several ways to either freeze, refrigerate, or otherwise store the cat food.

      FYI once the food is cooked and comes to a boil/and you keep the lid on/don't open it, then wait until the next morning or when its completely cooled, it should not matter about putting it in the fridge; I do this w/bone broth as I don't have room in my fridge and once its cooled down, I put it into containers/freeze etc. and never had a problem...just a tip for those who don't have room in their fridge

    Thanks for this video! I am the personal chef to two sweet kitties, and they gave it 8 paws up. I poured it into large baking pans and froze it, scoring it before it was completely frozen so I could break it into serving size pieces to make meal time quick and easy. I warm it up a bit and mix it with some kitten kibble (they are both less than a year old). One of my kitties was having litter issues, but he has not had it since he started eating this. I used to foster kittens. I had 13 of my own rescues.(all spayed and neutered) I've made homemade cat food. Something I would do in the future if or when cat food becomes expensive. Chicken, or other fowl types of protein, has the nutrition specifically important to cats. Just like this lady here describes in cooking the meat, bones, and skin.
    I throw (even done this with turkey with bones, and other parts we don't like. I put them in a big pot, cover with water and boil it until the bones begin to turn a chalky white-ish color. That's an indication that the bone marrow has leached out. I do this the same way I make homemade broth to use when flu season rolls around every fall. Feeling crapy, a bowl of this chicken broth, I like to put diced carrots(not too much, it'll sweeten the broth), and diced potatoes or just angel hair pasta. The broth I freeze to make soup for ourselves when sick. After the bones turn chalky white, I turn off the burner, let it cool down, then I strain out all the bones) I like to cool it down over night so I can skim off the chicken fat before I divide it into freezer containers. (OR if you're really ambitious, process in sealed jar rings in a pressure canner, meat and broth together for soups, or other recipes). I freeze them because of health limitations.
    I feed my cats a good healthy dry food, its more costly, but they don't have so much vomiting as the cheap stuff does to them. So I budget their food needs into my grocery budget. It does require me to give up certain products, but at least my cats are healthy. And then feed them a canned wet food as a treat. But this stuff is good for them if they're feeling a little peckish. One cat has kidney failure, and when toxins build up in her system she gets very 'erpy'. I will feed her some of this homemade chicken stuff for her until her body recovers. Its just the nature of the beast called chronic kidney disease. (She and I were diagnosed with ckd in the same week, only mine is a rare disorder).
    When I cut up a whole chicken for us to eat, we don't eat certain parts, like the two back sections and of course the carcass, and even the bones from our plates. I just take these pieces and put them in a freezer bag and freeze until I have a several pieces, then make my broth. I do this boiling bones with beef/oxtail, pork, and other poultry. And don't forget to decarmelize the pot or pan your meat has baked in.
    Just try it, when you're sick, get yourself some broth out of the freezer or open a jar, add herbs and spices as you like. Cook the potatoes, carrots and noodles in the broth and eat. You'll be amazed how you will feel after.
    Same thing for the cats. I also feed my cats sprouted oats for grass to eat. Its not like grass outside grass. This is like salad for cats. I keep a rectangular planter with dirt, and plant the oats. Just sprinkle on top of soil, water the pot very well, keep it moist until the seeds sprout. Nice sun location will sprout the oats in three days, but they can take a week to sprout. Just water it about once a week or is the soil gets too dry. Set it on the floor out of the way so your cats can get to it any time they want. But it has to be oat grass.

      Wow! Cheri, thank you for sharing your knowledge! Whew! I'm still absorbing. Good stuff. I love the way you approach feeding your cats - there are multiple variables impacting it, both external, like availability and price, convenience, and time, and internal, like your kitty's dietary needs. Flexibility creates adaptability, where everyone wins. This video is one way to feed our cats - I'm actually in the process of producing a video similar to your description using turkey. Yes, bone broth has been part of holistic health for millennia. Regarding the cat grass, I'm sure your crew just loves it! Oats are a type of grass, but not what most people have for their lawns! @@karenoogjenbiserni1201 cat grass is often oats, which are a grass. I was confused by this until I attempted oats out in my garden this past spring. It requires more water than other grains, but it is a beautiful, lush grass that is edible to cats. My oat grass was outside, while my cats are inside, but I may plant them a patch. 😁. ...that's exactly why i'm here. There is no wet cat food in the stores and the ones that are left are outrageously expensive, 2.8 oz cans of Fancy Feast for $.66/ea. I'm feeding 4 strays. I just noticed that Walmart has the 10lb. leg quarters bag for $4.48, so i'll try it. I will continue to supplement with dry cat food for grazing (38lb. bags of Kit and Kaboodle for $18 at Sam's, basically $.48/lb.)
