  • This video shows a gratuitous dimly lit start up of the console. I also go through 3 passes of a work in progress project I am recording. There are 8 channels with a single Tonelux JC37 mic being used on each instrument. I am only using the console EQ and an outboard TC Electronic D Two delay unit. I figured this would be a very stripped down version to listen to the EQ and summing of the console. I also wanted to shoot this video to see what the sound difference would be in the box, vs out of the box through the console. Happy thanksgiving!

    This series is great, thanks so much for doing it and I hope you continue with detail on the step-by-step. We own the H2000 that was previously in Metro Chicago and I want desperately to get it back into full fighting shape to do a few gigs per year.

      Thanks Tyler! After one mix, I’m in love. I’m going to start pulling the channels in the next few days to start that process. You should get yours up and running! Send me a message when you do, id love to see it!

      @@billylaguardia Will do; we tested it when we got it two years ago but it def needs a little bit of work and cleaning; a decade-plus at Metro will leave anything grimey.

    I find I have to go twice as hard on in the box EQ's as I do on analog gear to get the same sound. Not sure why.

    • @billylaguardia
      @billylaguardia  4 роки тому +2

      Agreed. To that end, I mix on a Midas Pro 1 digital console a few times a week. The eq’s sound very similar to the Heritage in terms of tone. However the Heritage much more aggressive. You would need a -12 cut on the Pro 1 to equal a -3 cut on the Heritage all things withstanding in terms of Q.

      @@billylaguardia exactly, 3db boost/cut on my TAC Scorpion console does a whole lot more than any in the box EQ's I have like the Waves SSL G plugin.

    I love this video! Great example of this console! Do you mind sharing your settings from the Dtwo dly? I love mine, and was curious what you did to get the vocal sound. Thanks!

      Hmmm. If I remember correctly it was the “D-Two Delay” setting, which I believe is preset #2. The feedback is either 0% or 1%, with a delay time of around 100ms.

    thanks for the video and congrats to your skills! do you think/know that the midas venice has the same sound ? And how would you compare the sound of this console with , say 19" rack pre amps like api, neve or cleaner kind of pres, like the daking. I'm a drummer, so i'm really considering to go for a small console with onboard eq. Thanks!

    • @billylaguardia
      @billylaguardia  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Roberto. All Midas pre-amps are slightly different in the circuitry. They are all based on the same design, however the consoles are built differently. The Venice is a fine console, and will be great for recording. The EQ’s are slightly more limited, however for tracking drums they will do what you need them to. Midas pre-amps start to produce usable output level with dynamic mics when the knob is around “2 o clock”. This is the “Midas sound” due to the amount of saturation that occurs when driving a pre. I have Focusrite ISA828 preamps as well. They offer more headroom in terms of gain before saturation. So, they are much cleaner. My advice on preamps is this: most will sound just fine. Expensive preamps can take more transient levels with less noise. So most mid price pres will be just fine. Hope this helps!

      @@billylaguardia thank you very much. I am currently using a 4 channel API clone, built to the schematics of old Api's, but with added output trim. I'm happy with its sounds and saturation options, but I was looking for more channels and eq options, not necessarily interested in saturation, but very much in sound quality. I've seen that the Venice offers a/d d/a conversion via firewire, and I was wondering if scoring one of those little console would constitute an upgrade to my current focusrite 8channel interface (with no true line inputs). I'm not that sure of the firewire option because I need to be able to record into my daw and have zero latency monitoring. So as you can read, I am looking to solve multiple problems with one move :)

      @@robertopistolesi2735 Hey Roberto. I track through a Venice 240. Funnily enough, I bought it because I wanted good pres, eq for tracking, and most importantly zero latency monitoring. As far as the preamps, they are not going to be as rich as something like a 512c or a 1073, but they are clean and round, certainly recording studio worthy. The EQs are very musical but they are aggressive sounding, and not particularly smooth unlike the preamps, but they are good and can give you usable options. As to the converters: I heard that many people had problems with the drivers for the firewire venice consoles, which is why I opted for one of the older models with no ADDA when I bought it. I run my Venice into a Motu interface which is expanding the inputs for my RME BabyFace Pro FS using ADAT. Having used the Venice pres almost exclusively for a couple years now, these are my honest opinions:
      I find myself wanting something with smoother eqs to track with, and I do find myself wanting a more soft and full preamp sound for things like vocals, as good as the preamps are. The Babyface has changed my workflow with its zero-latency monitoring and as many custom monitor mixes as you need complete with eq per channel and even wet FX like delay and reverb. I've even used it as a live mixer. Rock solid. I think a lot of interfaces can do this now. Because of this I have seriously considered selling off the Venice and just getting something like an ADA8200 to expand my BabyFace inputs with it's Midas-designed preamps, and with it being so affordable, I may be able to justify buying some more high end pieces that will do what I am looking for. But the Venice are great desks, and you can absolutely make great recordings with them and let nobody tell you different. And the console workflow is such a time saver. And of course my Venice sounds absolutely colossal as a FOH console! Hope this helps.

      Dear Billy, I ended up buying a small soundcraft K1 and a motu 16A. I'm super excited to star learning mixing and tracking through the console, and watching this video again I find it even more interesting and useful. Thanks again! I think if you did more videos over mixing you would cover a space in you tube that not many have covered, since it's all basically talk talk talk about mixing and very little console mixing out here.
      Best wishes to you

    Hi...It's work with Cubase and Pro tools? and without patch bay?

    • @billylaguardia
      @billylaguardia  4 роки тому +2

      Yes. However you will need an audio interface(s) with an adequate number of inputs and outputs allowing the console to remain patched. An example using a 48ch console would leave inputs 1-24 patched to the audio interface inputs for tracking, and 25-48 patched to the interface outputs for mixing.

      Billy- wondering what interface you are using for driving inputs. I own a Venice, but want an interface with enough IO, and clean enough D-A's to not affect how the Midas pre's saturate. Considering DirectOut prodigy's with the DB25 line out modules ...if you have something that worked good for you, I'd love to know. Thanks!
