Why I Don't Like Flip Cases & Other Road Case Related Factoids | Ask A Case Guy Ep. 1
Hey Friends! I have had a few comments lately asking road case specific questions. One question that comes up a lot is the flip case. LM at the time of publishing this video doesn't currently offer a flip case. I go into a few of the reasons why and some other flight case facts.

Hey Friends! Another video in the "I have Saturday off" series. I have 4 Midas Heritage 2000 channels that came home from having the pre-amps recapped by Midas guru Jim Sawyer. I figured that this would be an interesting video for those of you who aren't familiar with modular consoles and analog channel strips. Enjoy!
What Is A Matrix On An Audio Console? | Ask Billy Ep. 4

Hey Friends! Today we delve into......the matrix. What is a matrix on a mixing console? Its just an output. Super easy! Just an output... The most common application is to feed speakers such as the main hangs, front fills and subwoofers. It can also be useful for recording the show or sending a broadcast feed. I also show an example where a performer on stage wants a send of the vocal mics from...

amazing video
Over in Europe we also have Adam Hall (parent company of LD Systems) that also has a catalog full of case hardware and wood. I always have ny boxes build and aluminium cut by a case building company and finish them of myself. Which comes down to assembling, drilling and riveting and of course the most important part: Making sure everything fits perfectly. Saves me about 40% of total cost of a completed case.
It's funny. Not too long ago everybody wanted to go digital so they could stop hauling around their outboard gear (which sometimes was ridiculously large and complicated). And now we are back where we started: Big racks filled to the brim with outboard gear. Especially the younger generations are really into outboard gear. I know some oldtimers that hold on to their outboard gear for whatever reason that are now making a killing as prices for quality outboard gear are on the up & up. Same goes for stagesnakes up to 12 channels. After getting them for almost free, there has been a steady rise over the past year for these snakes in the second hand market.
I guess i Just don't understand why of company 1 can make it for x, why you'd have to be 2-3x company 1. You all use the same ingredients you said.
We use the same suppliers, not the same ingredients. As an example, Costco sells A5 Wagyu and regular ground beef. You can buy standard aluminum extrusions from Penn Elcom. LM designed and created our own cornerstock / tongue and groove shapes which required custom dies. Beyond ingredients, everyone will have different operating expenses. Someone building cases in their garage will have a lower monthly mortgage than say a 40k sq ft shop. Payroll is another factor in operation expenses: How much do the employees earn? Do you offer health insurance, retirement etc…?
We've asked this specific case guy a lifetime's worth of questions.
Im all yours for another 12 lifetimes! 😻😻🥰🥰 (after 12…you are on your own 🤣🤣🤣)
Hi Billy very nice video , I just bought the Midas m32r when I switched on the assign button no 3 and 4 keeps on blinking is it normal or I need send it back . I would really appreciate for your help.
@@Raju1853 it might be assigned (or double assigned) to a delay. Double check your fx and see if it adjusts a parameter.
Ok I’ll check that out in fact it was just new from the packaging, should be in normal factory setting mode isn’t it. Anyway thanks a lot for your help Billy 🙏🏻
Hey Mr. Billy, I’m a middle market sound and production company Out of New Hampshire. We love listening to you, and how relating to our life is so much the same. C-COAST Sound is a big fan of you sir!!!
Awww thanks C-Coast Sound!!! This comment got me right in the feels! Send me an email with your address and I’ll send you guys a swag pack! Billy@lmcases.com
You didn’t describe the (triangular) delta symbol on the front which is the actual indication that it’s a separate ground outlet.
reset solves issue with 4th dsp chain?
It did for me. Are you having the same problem?
@@billylaguardia thank you! No, not yet, just wondering how reliable the new device is
@ it sounds amazing. The digital integration isn’t quite ready for prime time. If you run it analog with the emote plugin for recalls it really works well. I use it on every mix. Well worth the $.
Really cool machine. Great video!
Which stand can adjust the lowest? What's the measurement from top of desk to bottom of display screen. Thanks
How would you use a drive rack with the M32c.
L/R outputs of the M32C into the inputs of the DriveRack. The DR would handle your multiple sends like L/R, Sub, Front Fill etc..
You wouldn't have a bare isolated ground conductor. They have to be insulated and you still need regular ground to ground the strap on the outlet. They need two grounds and the entire service had to be setup to use a isolated ground system in the panel feeding a isolated ground receptacle.
Hey, I'm curious! What are your reasons for disliking flip cases? Im actually interested in one because I then wouldn't need another case or a table to set my mixer on.
This is an excellent question! I decided to make a video on it. Here ya go! ua-cam.com/video/CUbT_gxE0Kg/v-deo.html
Are you going to show us how to physically connect outboard gear to the M32R, and then show us exactly how to program the M32R to use the outboard gear? Because I'm 4 minutes in and so far you're just selling stuff.
Totally thought those were Presonus ACP88s at the beginning, but you’re not that old.
@@philtuttle ha! I had one! That took me a long time to save up $900 to buy that thing!
Where did you get those speakers covers with band name on them. Awesome
The outer covers are just the normal RCF bags. The band owner got the grill covers. It’s just stretchy fabric that they used the factory grill screws to attach. Not sure where they got them from.
U are a talented dude
@@RobMLyon awww shucks. Thanks! 🥰🥰
Been loving the mikrotik hex routers, they make a spf version and just copper one, poe powerable and can pass through, highly capable it devices and saves a plug. Remote wifi ap from the rack and its an easy setup
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll check em out!
Hit the subscribe button at “I’ve decided that I just can’t possibly continue mixing shows on my m32 rig without outboard gear - I know, I know - it’s impossible” Lol. I’ve been using my XR18 and Antelope DSP as outboard for a soundcraft si performer. 😔 How am I supposed to mix if I don’t have the constant fear that my inconsistent and unreliable attempts to imitate analog hardware will fail when I need them most?
🤣🤣🤣 we are audio engineers. If we can’t overcomplicate…why even bother.
Do use an external EQ for the studio monitors or you run them flat..
I use the DBX DriveRacks for EQ over each set of speakers. That gives me corrective EQ to help get them reasonably flat sounding. The placement and the room aren’t great, but my mixes do translate really well.
@@billylaguardia Thanks champ!!
My only question is with the quality of all those Neve components and their cost, why are we using a M32R?
The irony is not lost on me that the compressor costs more than the console. My LM case costs almost as much as the console too! The M32 sounds good and has enough features for the bands I’m mixing. The problem is that there is a huge delta in cost for the next step up in consoles. For a size comparison, a similar DLive rig with a c1500 and 32ch stage box is $20k. For another comparison: I think the cheaper Midas sounds better than the Yamaha QL/CL1, though I haven’t used the DM series yet. Yamaha is also in the $20k range for the surface and stage box.
@@billylaguardia The guy I work with has used them all, Midas Pro2, Midas M32, X32, DM7, and now the Allen and Heath SQ series. He's pretty sold on the SQ series and honestly so am I, A&H has been absolutely killing it lately. I personally have a X32 rack and I'm not very interested in getting anything Midas or Behringer for mixers again. Seems like Behringer at least has a lot of power issues that affect the Ethernet/AES connections across their products. I'd like to get the S32 stage box for my X32 and just run a Cat5 so I don't ever have to worry about where my rack is but, there's enough reviews stating the same problem with the power/heat affecting the AES connections and you end up losing control of them remotely a couple hours in. Same thing happens with my X32 rack, after a few hours of being on my laptop continuously loses connection with it, plugged in on a 3 foot ethernet cable directly to it, not even a network between the two :/
@ this comment is very timely sir! I had a brand new M32R have a bad AES card which was fine during production rehearsals and decided not work on day 1 of a 2 week tour. On Saturday’s gig, the stage box connection just “blipped” for a nano second during the set. I wonder if that was a heat issue?? I’ve had zero issues with the m32c, just the R.
@@billylaguardia at that price point the SQ is an M32R killer
…and waaaaaay more stable over Cat5
Think I woulda just used a MOTU LP32 and ran ADAT out of the Focusrite preamps, woulda reduced the cost by a good $1600... $2k after you factor in the snakes... Take that extra loot and and a good wordclock to your rig
Why not a unif modem?
Wht is the maximum length of the cat cable which can be used without an signal drop?
I love your Quad Hands Work Bench.👍 What are the dimensions of the base? The one on their website says it's 6" by 9" but yours looks like it is larger.

Hello everyone . please i need help " output configuration for M32R Live with DL16 " I'm currently working with the M32R Live mixer and the DL16 stage box, and I need help configuring the outputs. I'd like to use the user outputs on the mixer, specifically for buses 1-8 bus fader. I aim to set up bus fader 1 to output from the local mixer (out 1), bus fader 2 to output from the DL16 (out 1), bus fader 3 to output from DL16 out 2, and bus fader 4 from DL16 out 3 and so on. similar to how I configure the inputs. For the inputs, I can set input fader 1 to source from the local mixer and input fader 2 from the first input of the DL16 from user input I know how to do it , but setting for out it is confusing and also I want to make out 7 in dl16 as master out left and out 8 in dl16 as master out right and to keep also out from local 7,8 as master because I want to have other PA system from DL16 Could you please provide guidance on how to achieve this configuration for the outputs?
Mute button or mute function on the face of the hardware unit - because of 'unplugging' a hot guitar. Specifically, does the M4 have the 'push to mute' function on the volume knob? My experience has been that a 'mute' button or hardware function can help avoid damages from very expensive sounding noises made when unplugging a hot guitar from an amplified system such as powered speakers or a house PA. Expensive items that can be destroyed by loud popping noises caused by a guitar player.
@ Presonus 24r / 32r owners : Any quirks while using it live ? Coming from the soundcrat ui24r seriously considering the presonus 32r for an IEM rack build.

One of my all time favorite shirts!! Im glad someone appreciated the irony!
@@billylaguardia I love both bands too. Now you need to do a Slayer cover with a Steely Dan shirt on. 😊
what diameter size are you using for the heat shrink that holds the skin braided snake in place at the top (9' 45")? Cheers
OTOH, you could use outboard crossovers to drive your speakers, route everything through L+R, and dispense with matrix submixes altogether.
Sure. I used to do that with my DriveRack Venue360.The fun part about that is...the internal mixer within the DriveRack is still a matrix mixer. So choose your matrix: console or outboard.
@@billylaguardia The Venue360 takes an optional center channel input in addition to left and right. That is very useful in LCR mixing (e.g. cinema sound) and allows you to isolate crossover and matrix issues local to your amplifier/speaker configuration from instrument submixes (e.g. vocals, drums, etc).
can you use those yellow strippers to cut the outer jackets of balance 4-way and 8-way multicore cable? cheers
I've got a matrix on my desk but I'm still non the wiser!
I had a decent grasp of matrices, but this was super helpful. Thanks!
This is great. So nothing gets plugged into the LR output connectors when you've set up matrix's?
Correct, in the analog world the main outs would be empty. In the digital world, the outputs are assignable. So on a DL32 as an example, outputs 15/16 would still be your main outs, they would just be assigned as the matrix outputs.
@@billylaguardia got it.
Wait this is about audio? I thought I was going to learn how to escape the simulation!
It depends on which pill you take Ben! The red pill will allow you to understand the finer points of control over your outputs. The blue pill will allow you to continue plugging your master output into your linked subs and tops.
Most people understand an aux send is a way to send an INPUT somewhere (wedges, IEM, FX, etc). I explain a Matrix as an ‘aux’ for OUTPUTS (FF, streaming, recording, backstage, etc).
I thought of you when I was drawing the diagram! That’s why I drew the dividing line at the master fader for ins and outs. Sound friends UNITE!! 🤟
