Predator - Arnold At His BEST?

  • Just take a sneaky peak back on the movies we’ve covered so far on our ARNIE REVISITED series, and the Austrian Oak had already covered several genres in his rise from bodybuilder to Hollywood icon. Raw Deal and Commando were straight up action movies, while his work as Conan was an epic mix of action and fantasy. You can even argue that The Terminator is a classic 80s slasher flick, and not simply the revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece it’s generally regarded as. However, he hadn’t managed to blend both horror and science fiction in any of his previous movies, in the way he did with the film we’re focusing on in today’s episode - Predator. It was such a huge success for both star and franchise that it not only helped to further cement Arnie as a Hollywood icon, but also created a franchise packed with sequels, a prequel, crossovers, video games, graphic novels, and so much more. Sure, some of the content in the Predator franchise may be somewhat hit and miss, but there’s no denying the iconic nature of the first movie, with its memorable one-liners, gory deaths and awesome jungle based action.
As we found out in our last episode, the 'Austrian Oak’s' last movie before taking on deadly camouflaged aliens, 1986’s Raw Deal, was a decent action flick, but not necessarily an iconic entry in his back catalogue. So, the actor was more than likely on the lookout for a script that could elevate his career and also expand upon the genres in which he had already found great success. Was Predator the movie to achieve all of this? We all know it was, of course, but just how exactly did the sci-fi epic come to be such an iconic movie of the 80s? Well, it’s time to work on those biceps, and embrace your inner goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus, as we find out here, on ARNIE REVISITED.

The attack on the guerilla base is a bit run of the mill action which is quite boring and feels lower in quality than the rest of the movie. Other than that, it's perfect.

A lot of great one liners. A lot of really memorable scenes. And a story that pivots in a completely different direction part way through. This would be a tough movie to make today. Not without shoehorning in at least one tough-as-nails woman who can outfight the men. And getting rid of all that macho nonsense, so it can appeal to "modern audiences". Then again, "Alien" and "Aliens" did quite well, as did the first two Terminator movies. The thing is, the women earned their toughness, and were not just Mary Sues.

Arnold had plenty of classics in the 80s imo! I remember how we all sat around the TV watching this come on. Yeah, we were allowed to watch R rated films as kids cuz our parents were cool and would explain sh*t! Also, we weren't as sensitive back then😏

  • @deinoswiz1

For myself, this is my favorite movie that I would be to watch everyday. I would go to the movie theater to see it if the studios re released the film in the movie theaters. The soundtrack is epic with a real militaristic feel and as a small boy watching the movie, it makes you want to go to the military. The only other sequel that should have been done was part 2 with Danny Glover, but that really just opened up a can of little worms having the aliens (xenomorph) head mounted on the trophy wall. Glover should of had an alien weapon tossed to him instead of a flint lock pistol from 1715. The Prey movie must have been made by Disney, and really really did not make the movie masculine for young boys to watch, but really just made it for your modern generation to see one time. A one time watch film. AVP was in the same boat as prey is but not as expected. Spoiler (at the end of the first one you almost think the two protagonist are to kiss) , and really did not do well in having the location in the Hoth system. AVP should have followed the exact same script that the game did on the Xbox / PlayStation systems. Space, jungle, inside tombs, and modern facilities. Predator is probably one of Arnold's greatest films.

All too often, negative reviews given to films of the past, (especially hugely popular films of the past,) are assessed by critics who either do not consider the context of the time period when the film was created/released or are the type of critics who enjoy giving negative reviews regardless of whether or not they've actually given a fair assessment of the film in question.
Personally, I give "professional" film critics and websites little to no credibility when it comes to films I've watched or haven't watched. Remember, when it comes to being professional film critics, it doesn't mean they know movies; it means that they are good at conning others into paying them for their opinions.
