Commando: The Movie That Definitively Made Schwarzenegger A Hero?

  • If there’s one word that perfectly sums up the bombastic nature of 80s action cinema, it has to be ‘excess’. Action behemoths, big hair, muscles, fantastical landscapes, and arm-wrestling matches that could be won by the simple flip of your favourite cap. It was an amazing decade for movies, and for action movie icons. Looking back on the early career of one of the era’s most iconic megastars, Arnold Schwarzenegger, there’s one thing that jumps out like doomed cannon-fodder from one of his movies; they were never dull. After having successfully conquered the world of bodybuilding, and subsequently the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, with career defining roles in Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, The Terminator and Red Sonja, it’s clear that going bigger would be better for his career. Those movies highlighted how Arnie’s impressive physique could be utilised for maximum effect, whether he was wielding a sword as Conan, or destroying an entire police station as the T-800 in The Terminator, it was pretty clear that muscles and mayhem were very much on the menu for 80s audiences.
This is just as well, because the movie we’re revisiting today, 1985’s Commando, is a glorious example of 80s excess. You want violence, you get it in spades. Daft one liners? Yup. Over the top, memorable villains with awesome facial hair. You betchya!. That’s right movie fans, we’re heading up that secluded mountain to catch-up with retired special agent, John Matrix, before he’s forced to rescue a very young Alyssa Milano from his former unit. So, grab hold of that airliner’s wheel after despatching some rogue passengers, as we take a retrospective look at the Mark L. Lester classic from 1985, here on ARNIE REVISITED!

Love this movie! Really the first Arnold flick where he was able to be a regular guy (sort of) and not a barbarian or a machine. Many quotable lines, massive over-the-top action, a cartoonishly evil villain, and endless explosions - everything that sums up the 80s action genre all inside one movie!

The first time I saw this movie was with my family at home as we watched a rented VHS copy. During the end fight scene between John Matrix and Bennett I had become so enthralled in the action that I was unconsciously leaning in concert with Arnie as he struggled against his opponent; my leaning, as I was afterwards told by my dad, kept getting in the way of my sister's view of the movie.
BTW, for those who don't know, Alyssa Milano's acting career began with "Commando" and the successful 80s (to early 90s) television sitcom, "Who's the Boss?", (starring Tony Danza and Judith Light.) ("Who's the Boss?" premiered in Fall of 1984, "Commando" opening in Fall of 1985.)

I will always defend 80's action movies. I may be biased considering I grew up with these, but if the last 40 years have taught me anything is that the 80's were some of the best times for movies and music. This is a testament to that. This movie is glorious even today. They don't make them like this anymore and it's kinda sad. Great video.

Commando is a stone wall classic. As an 80's kid I was lucky to be allowed to watch this on VHS (along with Robocop, Terminator etc). To be honest, those of that really appreciate it the most are us 80's kids. Commando was basically an adult movie made specifically for kids. It was like the A-Team on steroids. I watched it with my a few month back with my then 17 year son and he just thought it was a cheesy as hell goofball action romp who found it mildly enjoyable.

Commando is an all time Action classic, it has some rough edges sure. But it’s Arnold that makes this movie, along with the supporting cast of memorable characters and memorable dialogue. The action is the icing on the cake, it’s as satisfying as you can get.
We would’ve gotten COMMANDO 2 but Arnold didn’t want to do it, so the script was reworked and became Die Hard.

I remember ITV showing an 'Arnie Season". Each Saturday night in September '92. Commando, Predator. Conan the Barbarian. Red Heat.
I'd seen it on video, when a friend with access to Sky Movies taped it off the Telly. I couldnt wait to have my own copy of it, along with Predator, Red Heat and Conan!!!!
Of the Awesome Foursome shown on ITV, Commando suffered the most with the editing. The knife fight between Matrix and Bennet was gone as you said, and several seconds of its more intense action/death scenes were cut. I didnt mind too much, but was annoyed at the time aswell.😂
That said, I cannot convey my excitement at the time of taping those films. I remember each of those Saturdays, eagerly looking forward to the film starting, hitting "Play/Record" on the aul' VHS player. Writing the film titles on the label stickers in artistic font, and proudly labeling the video cassette with "Commando and Red Heat". 4 hour video tape= two films on one tape!!!!

I know this because I used to work with a bloke that lived in the house when Commando was filmed there.

We need our action movies to return especially with everything going on in the world. There are reasons men AND women flocked to see these in theaters and rent/owned at home. Once I was even called toxic masculine because of my love for my action films from someone who was supposed to be a friend but deep down was a simp and soy-boy for my then girlfriend. I'm not letting modern day society take away my love for 80s action just like I won't let that happen to my 80's horror. Most of these movies inspired us to be the men who we are, my grandfather raised me on Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, and John Wayne alone and I'm thankful. Let's get back to or bring back the 80s Action!

This is a live action cartoon movie. Totally ridiculous, but also very entertaining. It was only topped by "Predator", which is a true classic.

I liked Commando. It was quite good. At the time it would've been interesting had John Matrix crossed paths with John Rambo.
Hope to see a review of Chuck Norris' and Lee Marvin's The Delta Force next.

Cheese is good, really good ;) And the game was superb. Damn, the amount of coins I put into that machine back in the day is insane ;) Along with 1942, one of my favourites. The film is pure 80s action madness.

If you liked Commando, you might like Arnie's totally underrated "Raw Deal". Same general action genre, but a slightly tad more serious FBI agent undercover in the Chicago mob.

This was the film that really kicked off the Schwarzenegger quips. Here's a few of my favourites:
    Let off some steam Bennett.
You know when i said i'll kill you last? I lied.
Hey what happened to your friend?
    I let him go.
Don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired.

What a year 1985 was… it gave us Commando and Rocky IV as well as the “Chuck Norris facts” of Chuck Norris films in Invasion USA.

The one liners... set Arnie up for his comedy movies, eg Twins.

You can see the ice cream shop he eats at on Mt. Baldy on Google earth. The movie house he lives in is also nearby. Really neat to see.

A really fun and informative video, but the way the narrator Adam Walton words it in the beginning, if one didn't know any better, it would be believed that VanDamme and Willis were competition for Schwarzenegger in 1985 along Sly, and that's simply not true.
Bruce Willis and Jean-Claude Van Damme's signature films "Die Hard " and "Bloodsport" both came out in 1988 along with the Steven Seagal actioner " Above The Law."
That's 3 years after "Commando" had debuted theatrically and been played on cable and VHS cassette tapes constantly.
By the time Willis, Seagal, and VanDamme had thrown their hats in the action movie ring, "Commando" already had 3 years in which it positively etched itself onto the hearts and minds of moviegoers all over the world therefore establishing Arnold's reputation as an action movie icon.
When "Commando" dropped in 1985, Schwarzenegger's only real competition was some dude named Sylvester Stallone.
Eh..., I guess one could probably make a case for the Chuckster (Norris) as well.
