I didn't know these games before but I can definitely see that - Our mistake for not catching that though! I will ask you all not to blame the author, there is nothing wrong with copying other games in a game jam :D It's just about having fun and sometimes you just want to try your best at re-creating something you like! Well, @brackeys its the second time in a row that you leave out one of my entries, despite getting great results in rankings, this time with 2nd Place in graphics and audio, dunno what to think, its your choice of course, but still, the selection process of those games its pretty unclear...
I thought that was really impressive how they faked the black hole optical effects so well. It was really just doing a sort of reflection which isn't too hard computationally, but it captured exactly the feel of light bending around from behind the black hole despite not actually doing it at all. At first when I realized that I was kind of disappointed but honestly I'm super impressed now at how they got the feel so good without requiring crazy raytracing and intense simulations (at least I assume they didn't ray trace...).

Yeah what the heck. Not even a mention of Donut County. I'm fine with this cloning for a little game jam but don't pretend like the dude came up with the idea.
It was pretty poorly executed too. you could see in the video that the circle just bumped up in size all of a sudden and it didn't seem that fun because the area was small and without many objects. I don't want to spread negativity towards the creator of it as I probably could not have done much better myself and I haven't actually seen the other games but I feel like someone else may have deserved a spotlight more than he did. that being said I can kind of see this from Brackeys' (idk his name lol) point of view because he might have wanted to get many approaches to the theme in his video and may not have known that this game was just a poorly made clone.

I like how the first game Brackeys showed was a copy of Donut County, imagine making a ripoff of a good indie game without anything else except the hole, no story, no characters, just hole, 10/10 would hole again.

Great stuff and nice to see pre-made assets are allowed, but IMHO for future jams it would be nice to see 2 separate categories: 1) unique games made from scratch just for the jam and 2) games made using pre-made assets, asset packs, clones of existing games, games made by closely following tutorials etc. and showcase them separately. Otherwise this is awesome and this channel is a gold mine, keep up the great work!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with making a clone at a Game Jam. It's a Game Jam. Being original and innovative is not a prerequisite. However, when reviewing said games, it should be acknowledged when a submission is original or not. Obviously.

Hey, I'm the developer of that game, Cameron / JUSTCAMH. Like ererbe says, it's a lot of math, more than can be simply detailed. The rendering of the terrain was done with sprite shape. Then the cutting was a lot of geometric math (things like finding the intersection of lines and projecting vectors). Sprite shapes are just a list of points, so once I knew where all of the new points should be, it was easy to set up. There's not much more I can say without going all mathy on you, but that's the rough gist of it.
I really wanted to do this Gam Jam, but I don't know how to code. My idea for this was you are an investor searching for someone who went missing in the woods for years. In the forest, however, there are holes inside every tree. And there's an invisible monster in the woods with you. But the only way to see it is by looking through the holes, because the holes look into a different dimension where you do see him. At the end of the game, you find a house with a hole that is human-sized. You jump inside and confront the monster, only to be chased into the area where she was kidnapped and you die. Let me know if you think this is a good idea.

I know this is probably not the right video to post this on. But I would love to see some videos on making fire, explosions, and smoke, using the unity VFX Graph. I know there was a smoke one done a while back but this smoke I mean like more of a sprite sheet smoke say like a bullet trail smoke, something like that. Same with the fire one really. That aside I love these games and this was brilliant!
The shaders and graphics of obliterator are so freaking cool. I would love to play a game like that but then with more content. Or I would LOVE to learn how to make a game like that. I don’t know it’s just so cool to me. I asked the guy who made it about his shader for the lightning effect. He said there's sort of a "glass-like bubble" around the asteroids that reflect the light in the way that you see in the gameplay. Apparently his older brother is an astrophysicist and he helped design a lot of the gravity simulation and probably some of the art direction too
