I just revived my old steel road bike built in 1996, and there is no doubt, the feel is noticeably smoother both in terms of flex where you want it, and vibration damping. I hadn't ridden it for many years, and it was immediately clear how nice it felt. Even with 25mm tires on stiff modern wheels, it feels smooth. I used to run 23's on it, and at the time you could still get 19's if you wanted. Quality steel tubing in the hands of a frame builder who knows how to use it can be amazing.
Love steel. I still have my Trek 930 from 1991 that I adapted for touring. It is a beautiful lugged frame! I upgraded every component over time and it's been to Europe twice along with several long tours of the western US.
I put a Ritchey carbon fork, lightweight Hunt wheels, 350B x 47 tubeless tires and a 1x10 drivetrain on a Soma DoubleCross frame for a bike that weighs in at 22 lbs. I just love it.
I ride a Breezer Inversion with some improvements. Joe Breeze was an early inventor of mountain bikes. His company is now in Northeast Philadelphia. Frame is Japanese cromaly steel with carbon fork. Components are Shimano 105 and GRX, some Integra. The Integra is about $2500.
Great video, Ty. thanks for promoting steel as a serious option. However, you neglected to mention a great company out of the SF Bay area, Soma. I've been riding a Soma Wolverine since 2017 and it's a great bike for gravel and bikepacking. It even has a split rear-stay if you want to use belt drive. Anyone looking into steel should consider looking up Soma.
Yes!!! I've heard of Soma and have seen them around. They are a brand that has been around for a long time if I'm thinking of the same company. I will check them out! Thank you.
That was interesting, especially all city owned by salsa and surly. I have 700c x 50mm tires on my salsa. Or sure the coolest bikes are these lesser known handmade, especially northern Californians.
Awesome unknow brands here in germany. I confirm the feeling to ride a steel bike. I got 2 Steel Crossbikes ( Alpinestars Xross and Merida) and the feeling is really nice. Stay well and keep the feet on the pedals. Best Wishes and regards from germany 😎👍
What are your thoughts on the steel Kona Rove with sram rival, We just got one for my girlfriend to start gravel riding, i have the canti all city space horse and love it
Sorry, but I disagree. A Gorilla Monsoon frameset, right now, as of 7/10/2021, in a 49 cm can be had for $950. I did not see a Gunnar Cycles' frameset for that price. It's just hard from US manufacturers to compete Taiwanese manufacturers. I'd imagine that the steel tariffs also hurt.
I thought the divide looked so sick! No I'm keeping the diverge for a long time. I love that bike. And I just got new wheels for it. Steel bikes are very cool though. I love how custom these companies make them with all the little unique touches.
1800.00. I bought a 2020 Bikesdirect reynolds 853 framed full GRX-810 built bike. I got the 2X11 GRX and the bike is sweet. (type of steel used matters, some of these trendy builders are using very basic "cro moly" tubes. Can be heavy.
Taiwan is great for steel bicycle production and, even though I am *very* pro “buy American”, I am fine with buying products designed in the US and manufactured in countries that 1) honor copyright and trademark rights, 2) pay good wages and offer good working conditions (Taiwan is one of the best in the world for this BTW), and 3) have quality labor that really doesn’t exist in the US.
They may be. I know Litespeed and Lynsey are made in Tennessee so maybe they supply Chumba? From my research, it made it sound like Chumba made all their bikes in Texas...I do my best to get facts right and pronounce things correctly but sometimes it's difficult with limited info...

@@josephwaggener9307 they don't make em like they used to!
Soma Fabricators should be at the top of you list.
Just received my All City Cosmic Stallion. Lucky to find it in today’s economy and super pleased with the ride and build quality
They are pretty cool bikes. Everyone I've talked to who has an All City loves them.

Nice video. Glad to see Chumba was in the mix, I have a Terlingua and it is a fabulous bike, they also make great mountain bikes.
Good reviews. I especially appreciate the All City mention. Thy are great bikes!
They definitely have that cool factor and seem like a great value.
Love the classic look of the lug weld points on the All City line up.
Me too!!! Very cool looking bikes!

I love it! That sounds like a sick bike!

Hello, nice video, thanks ! I own a Breezer Radar X pro, it is a very nice gravel bike with steel frame and fork.
That's a sick bike! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching!!! Yes, I also have a steel bike and it rides so smooth.
nice video, man i love steel frames these days.
It's just super cool how custom they are. I love the little personalized touches these companies put on the bikes.
Gr8 content! Keep it up!!
I appreciate it!!!
New company making steel gravel bikes is STS - Bicycles
I'm going to check them out and add them to a future list.
I love my PC Adventure. Only thing I had to upgrade was a rear wheel because of my size.
What are your thoughts on the steel Kona Rove with sram rival, We just got one for my girlfriend to start gravel riding, i have the canti all city space horse and love it
I have a 2013 steel Kona Rove with Rival and I love it!!!
Good to hear, we are currently going to upgrade the brake calipers to TRP hopefully it helps, other than that it’s a great bike
surly is a awesome company
100 percent!
Officina battaglin is also a good steel bike supplier. Even though they don't mention gravel bikes in the website you can get it custom made.
You forgot Gunnar cycles from Waterloo, WI. Made in the USA, and their prices are the same as framesets made overseas.
Hell yea!!! I need to check them out for a future list!

You can find well used 650b All City space-horse's with rim brakes well bellow 1k usd.
what's the gravel bike in the thumbnail???
That one is a Chumba.
CHUMBA TERLINGUA STEEL FOR THE WIN !!!
Sick bikes
Anyone out there know how I can locate and buy a Trek 60" 520 Grando? I'm 6'4".
Thank you in advance!
You forgot to include its weight and group set that matters most…
Check Rondo Ruut St1 and Rondo Bogan
Is someone saying steel is fake?
The divide looks like a great bike-packing rig. All these bike choices, you planning on trading out the diverge?
I thought the divide looked so sick! No I'm keeping the diverge for a long time. I love that bike. And I just got new wheels for it. Steel bikes are very cool though. I love how custom these companies make them with all the little unique touches.
good stuff - but I'll keep my Ti bike tho
I'm sure taiwan makes great bikes, in fact my current bike was made there, but I still would like to support bikes actually being built in the usa.
No doubt!
Cotic Escapade for me!
Leaves out Niner RLT. Yeah this is a serious video.
Lots of steel bikes out there.
well, what bike do you ride???
Steel tubing from arms manufacturers BSA British Small Arms.
Rikulau from Taiwan made C465 seamless stainless steel bike and many others heat treated steel bike.
1800.00. I bought a 2020 Bikesdirect reynolds 853 framed full GRX-810 built bike. I got the 2X11 GRX and the bike is sweet. (type of steel used matters, some of these trendy builders are using very basic "cro moly" tubes. Can be heavy.
Sounds like you got a sweet bike at an awesome price!
What about Soma bike frame is good?
I'll have to check them out!
@@TysRides Tange Prestige steel, also made in Taiwan. Really good frames.

It sucks living in Australia. We have basically none of these awesome companies and a surly is like $5000AUD
is this chumba what i known as marin bikes?
No I think those are two different companies.
Chumba Titanium bikes I believe are made in Tennessee not Texas
They may be. I know Litespeed and Lynsey are made in Tennessee so maybe they supply Chumba? From my research, it made it sound like Chumba made all their bikes in Texas...I do my best to get facts right and pronounce things correctly but sometimes it's difficult with limited info...
