You don't want to jump to conclusions with kids. Donald Duck once found his nephews in their treehouse with a box of cigars. Donald made them smoke every last one until he found the card at the bottom of the box, "Happy Birthday, Uncle Donald."
Or with adults. On All.in the Family, there was a box delivered they thought was a ticking bomb so it was doused with water to supposedly diffuse it. Turned out to be a gift of premium cigars from a cousin who quit smoking.

Mrs. Johnson was portrayed by Marie Denn, who died on 9/13/91, and whose last acting credit was on 9/2/89, long before that Star Trek episode aired. The actress from the ST:TNG episode Silicon Avatar was Ellen Greer (Will Geer’s daughter; He played Grandpa Walton on The Waltons.) Interestingly, “Tommy”, Craig Huxley, was in two Star Trek episodes, Operation Annihilate, & And the Children Shall Lead. Greg friend, Tommy, was portrayed by Craig Huxley. He appeared in two classic Star Trek episodes, Operation Annihilate (as Kirks nephew), and And the Children Shall Lead. Later on, the former child actor, famed for patenting his own version and making extensive use of the "BLASTER BEAM", a unique musical instrument consisting of an 18-foot metal beam strung with 2 dozen strings and massive pickups. Played by striking the wires with metallic objects, mallets, and even artillery shell casings. It was first heard in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) as the distinctive metallic bass notes associated with "V'ger". It went on to become a staple of science fiction film scores in the 1980s through 2020 (such as 2010 (1984) and Alien³ (1992)). HIs music instruments were also heard in Star Trek: First Contact. He is the father of singer/actress/Co-Producer Fiona Huxley.
The year this episode came out, the dangers of smoking began further coming out but there was still smoking everywhere. Planes, trains, bars, restaurants, ball games, everywhere.
What happened later on: Greg had the wrong jacket and his friend came over to claim it, and then Greg's friend was the one in trouble under Carol's friend taking a stand on smoking!
Carol's argument that Mike smoking when he was young is different because they didn't have evidence then - it seems to me that it would've been obvious even without evidence that smoking is bad for you because of all the problems it causes. My dad was a lifelong smoker and he coughed all the time. He was not able to quit for good and ended up dying of emphysema. In "The Crown" Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI smoked all his life and it shows him coughing up blood. He died young and I suspect a lot of the reason why was because of smoking. How could they be in any denial about how bad it was for you? When this show was on it was before people were really aware of how bad second hand smoke is for those who must be with smokers all the time. I have weak lungs and asthma and I think that even though I no longer have to breathe in other people's smoke, I had to a lot in my formative years because both of my parents smoked.
