His honesty at the beginning is what makes it plausible that he was being honest the second time. Trust is earned.....

With great irony, it turns out that those cigs belonged to Mrs. Johnson's son, as did the jacket.
That lady should’ve just left and said I’ll let you to take care of this. She had no business and I mean absolutely no business saying Greg came out of your jacket me nobody says that it’s none of your business. I would’ve walked right out and I’ll tell you even it’s the same size I would know it’s not my jacket.
Turns out it was that judgemental group leader's son that smoked and the boys had accidentally picked up the wrong jackets. She needs a lesson about bad parenting.

I've known kids who won prizes from the American Cancer Association for the anti-smoking posters they created, then light up as soon as they move out of their parents' house.

You don't want to jump to conclusions with kids. Donald Duck once found his nephews in their treehouse with a box of cigars. Donald made them smoke every last one until he found the card at the bottom of the box, "Happy Birthday, Uncle Donald."
Or with adults. On All.in the Family, there was a box delivered they thought was a ticking bomb so it was doused with water to supposedly diffuse it. Turned out to be a gift of premium cigars from a cousin who quit smoking.

This shows that our decisions can have consequences on the people we love because Marcia feels bad for telling on Greg. Not to mention Greg has younger siblings who look up to him. What if they decided to smoke because he does?

Cigs became heavily taxed to force people to quit....and then the weight started to.pile on. For all nicotine's drawbacks, it's great as an appetite suppressant and to rev up metabolism.

Thank god the parents believed Greg when he said that the cigarettes weren't his. I hate it when parents blame children when they confess they never did bad things like this.
What happened later on: Greg had the wrong jacket and his friend came over to claim it, and then Greg's friend was the one in trouble under Carol's friend taking a stand on smoking!

Marcia's perfect, so she was justified to tell on Greg. 🤣

I have no idea how I thought of it, but Mrs. Johnson was the scientist on Star Trek: TNG who went a little nuts and killed the crystalline entity!

The year this episode came out, the dangers of smoking began further coming out but there was still smoking everywhere. Planes, trains, bars, restaurants, ball games, everywhere.

Carol's argument that Mike smoking when he was young is different because they didn't have evidence then - it seems to me that it would've been obvious even without evidence that smoking is bad for you because of all the problems it causes. My dad was a lifelong smoker and he coughed all the time. He was not able to quit for good and ended up dying of emphysema. In "The Crown" Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI smoked all his life and it shows him coughing up blood. He died young and I suspect a lot of the reason why was because of smoking. How could they be in any denial about how bad it was for you? When this show was on it was before people were really aware of how bad second hand smoke is for those who must be with smokers all the time. I have weak lungs and asthma and I think that even though I no longer have to breathe in other people's smoke, I had to a lot in my formative years because both of my parents smoked. (My mother eventually quit) Now they're even talking about third hand smoke, where you smell it on people's clothing and in houses where the people smoke.
When I was Greg's age I also embarrassed my mother in front of her friends, a few times...

Hmmm ... If I had been in Marcia's place, that is not how I would have handled it.
I would have spoken to my brother about it first, and given him a chance to explain himself. That way, we might be able to settle it without getting our parents involved.
When I was growing up, that always seemed to be the general rule. If there's an issue involving a sibling, a friend, a classmate, a co-worker ... Always try to settle it yourselves first, before getting the authority figure (whether that's a parent, teacher, employer, or whoever) involved. With luck, you can resolve it without anyone getting into trouble.
Since Marcia was clearly very reluctant to tell their parents, Greg probably would have been able to talk her out of it, simply by promising never to do it again.
... But, that's just how I see it. Other people will, of course, see it differently, and you have to do what you think is right.

What happened to Mrs. Johnson to turn her so frigid and anatomical? Was it lost love? Did she experience some trauma that made her so unfeeling? The biggest problem in this show is the unanswered questions that are left unexplained and without resolution. No wonder they took it off the air. I'm only guessing but I bet Mrs. Johnson has a freezer full of Mr. Johnson frozen in her basement. Just a guess ...

Didn’t Barry Williams, the actor who played Greg, smoke daily at this point? It was an acting stretch for him to make it look like that was the first time he smoked. I think he quit eventually. I know a lot of child stars are exposed to a lot of adult temptations which makes their job even more difficult…
