Man VS Bear: Lewis & Clark in Montana
Вставка

- In the spring of 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition departed from the Mandan and followed the Missouri River west into Montana. They would need to cross the Rocky Mountains before the snow began to fall, and to that, they would need to find the Shoshone. Also discussed are the hunting on the upper Missouri, the portage of the Great Falls, and a fortunate encounter with the Nez Perce. This is part 3 in the Lewis and Clark series; links below for the previous two installments. #wildwest #history #western

You sure you can skin grizz, pilgrim?
Just as fast as you can bring em !
No. But I'm game to go down fighting.

I just switched jobs in the foundry I work at and now have time to listen to podcasts again. I had forgotten how much I love this show.
Hope you’re liking the new position
@@WildWestExtravaganza they moved me from being an Alloy Melter to driving a Hot Metal truck. The job has more downtime but the stress of driving Liquid Metal on a fork truck is giving me an ulcer.

I feel ya. Coming back to this channel is like coming home. I think to myself this is so enjoyable. What kept me away so long?
I just checked like 30 mins ago to see if this weeks episode was up.
What great timing! Thanks for all the work you put into this.
My pleasure!
I often resemble your remarks at the beginning of this post, about imagining experiencing life in frontier times void of the accompaniments of civilization. I have been , undeservedly, fortunate and blessed to have spent countless hours and miles on horseback, in the vast, sparsely populated, desert and mountains of Texas, mostly West of the Pecos River, over the last 40+ yrs. I wouldn't trade a minute of those times for a pile of gold. Of course, that is still a very far cry from the daily life experiences of the native peoples and pioneers ,etc. , from the period of history in North America. I appreciate your contributions to preserving the stories of those people and experiences unique to that time and place in history.
On my way to work...half hour ride ... perfect company to listen to while traveling
Enjoy!
"...buggered by the grizzlies..."
Sounds like a night out that's taken a very wrong turn...
Thanks Josh 🙏🇬🇧😉
It truly inspires awe to think about being a part of this expedition. Exploring this part of the world was like walking on the moon. I think men find this story so interesting because we have this intoxicating emotion within us of brotherhood, adventure, and overcoming hard times only to come out victorious in the end with our brothers. Not to mention the beauty they saw. It must have been like the garden of eden.
Hi Josh! Newer listener here. Keep doing what you're doing! I love history and just recently (from your videos) found a new love for wild west history. Your story telling is awesome and I now always look forward for an upload from you
Awesome! Thank you!
You're gonna get addicted to this channel, And Ol' Josh.. 👋😄💨
I've heard that showing up to a village like that with a pregnant or nursing mother and baby was a universal sign of peace
I live in Idaho. And as a longhaul truck driver have traveled much of their route. Hwy 12 over LoLol specifically. The animals were pushed into the mountains as described, but modern farming also came to those mountains. Huge wheat farms took over where the trees were logged out. But much timber remains and is replanted. Between the fields and the heavy cover, the country is more than plentiful with both whitetail and mule deer, elk, turkey, cats, and black bear. I don't believe there's been any sightings of grizzly along 12 but they do reside in and around Glacier park.
Josh love these story’s I drive a truck with my bride we listen to these story’s a lot . Makes the trips a little shorter. We are from SC but we run out west as much as possible. We know where a lot of these places are. Spent a many nights sleeping in western yellow stone along side the river. The west is a must see. Do it .
Thanks Josh another fine show!
Glad you enjoyed it
That was a great telling of their plight across the wilderness. The voice was a great plus to the telling. The AI many use sounds fake because it fake. Excellent job
Thank you sir for another excursion into podcast excellence 👍👌
Thank you, sir, for listening
Great ! I just got dentures. Listening to this is easier than having all your teeth pulled❤❤
I hope so
I've been thinking of doing the same. To be honest, the pain is the only thing holding me back. How bad does it hurt? I've had numerous teeth pulled on several different occasions, but the most at one time was 4. Part of me feels like I'm psyching myself out
@@jamess3241 first 2 days r tough. It was better than I had ASS umed. On my 3rd day now . Gotta work tomorrow so I will be magically healed. Next day dentures means in 3 weeks you may chew til then I suck. Lol GLAD I GOT IT OVER WITH..DO IT!
Lol! I just had to have my uppers pulled! I have an appointment on the 1st to get my dentures going.
I was hurting that first day, albeit, the pain was more of a dull ache rather than the sharp pain of a toothache.
I, honestly remember feeling more depressed and drained. Emotionally and physically.
Waking up after with my motuh full of gauze and, frankly, feeling mutilated, was a lot to be hit with.
Then I started bawling. I was apprehensive (of course, who wouldn't be?) and didn't sleep the night before. The combination of all things, including the anathesia ( which hit me hard and I've gone under plenty of times) evaporated any notion of stoicism. I was assured by staff that it was the meds causing the emotional stress.
I spent the rest of the day sleeping off the meds, and the day after figuring out what I could eat. Fried eggs and grits to the rescue! Dr. told me I'd be surprised what I could manage and he was right. I'm not getting too adventurous though.
So, the pain is rough, but not the worst, and very manageable with pain meds. A sore jaw and swelling is where i am now about two weeks on.
Make sure your after care support is briefed on the possibility you'll be a blubbering mess and zero stress the day or two after helps a lot too.
@@Clint52279 I am glad I am not the only one who balled their eyes out helpless feeling...on top of the teeth gone, I punctured an ear drum. No stereo for me.. it sucks. Fixin to eat mashed potatoes..🤨🙂

Another excellent presentation! Thank you!!! Very interesting!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like this series, a lot of stuff happened that they don't teach in school. Between the std's, mosquito bites, the 100 lashes for the guy's who bailed, and all the danger of guarding the guns and whisky from the Indians, think any of them were lucky to have survived. They could make a heck of a good movie about this, but nope, just the same old garbage. Thanks for all the good research, these podcasts are great. G-d bless.
Another great subject is the Astor expedition. Check this story out....
A Hawaiian was "Shanghaied" from the Sandwich islands on board the Tonquin. Captain Thorne was a total doosh. He sent him and a few others out to "sound" the entrance to the Columbia. It was a death sentence.
Sure enough the tiny boat capsized. The Hawaiian swam about three miles in frigid water to the northern shore, now the state of Warshington. He ended up assimilating with the Local Chinooks and lived out his life there. Today the beach he made it to is called Waikiki beach. You cant make this stuff up.
This story alone deserves an episode.

It’s was the gunsmith who was attacked by the grizzly. They named the spot after him.
Alexander Hamilton Willard, last surviving member of the expedition was laid to rest in Franklin California, 1865.
He is my 6th great grandfather.
One aspect of the expedition often overlooked was Willard’s contribution as a blacksmith. His metal working fascinated the Native Tribes where trading metal goods for food goods was like trading gold.
Thank you brother, please keep it up
Always welcome

I seem to remember the expedition encountered a grizzly before the Mandan village, had a man mauled by a grizzly and sent him back with an escort to the Mississippi .
He spontooned a bear and they didn't even cuddle after? 😮

the hunting stories from when they made it to west Hollywood are way crazier than the ones from Missouri.

Im looking out my window at them right now.
How cool is it that the men in the expedition walked right here on my property?!!!

@@WildWestExtravaganza Almost unreal.
I'm still trying to find the exerpt about the incident where the Clatsops were threatened by a tiny vial that allegedly had small pox in order to gain back stolen goods.

For the record, Celilo falls still exists, but it's far under water below the John Day Dam.
John Day was in the Astor expedition. His story is unreal too. There are two towns named John Day in Oregon. One jest east of Astoria and one above Celilo falls.
Everyone should read the L & C journals.Awezome read.Good job on vid
I just smashed the kids piggy bank. Love your content keep it up bubba
From all of my reading, I am of the opinion that William Clark and Sacogawea had a closer relationship than is ever mentioned. He called her "Janie," and he adopted her son after the expedition.

Just stumbled upon your video and I enjoyed it very much. Couple of things that might be advisable as you might be able to swing this gig into something much bigger. Travel to the Rocky mountains. Travel to Idaho. At least be able to say you've been there. You will not be disappointed. Also, back off on the obsession with venereal disease and it's pathological presentation. Keep it classy.
Good luck and I'm looking forward to another one of your presentations.

It is said that it is a good idea to carry bear spray ... IF ... you can carry it fast enough!?!?!?!?!?
Lewis's death is very fishy also. I don’t think suicide myself. I live in Vancouver, Washington, right next to the Columbia River.
We could bring back the old west, rewilding is a thing
I want to know how they cached their stuff without the indians stealing all of it once they left. And I also wonder if Lewis ever shared the maps he was making with the chiefs along the way, and showed them how far they actually came and what the Atlantic Ocean was. If I could meet anyone in history, it would be Lewis.

21:48 It’s honestly weird to me how so many people don’t know what Welsh, as a language, is… not saying that about you, clearly you knew that. But the fact you even had to clarify for listeners who are ignorant. It’s just...I’ve been hearing this lately, like, “what is Welsh?!” 🫤
But also, what do you mean by, “I’m aware they speak English in Wales, if you wanna call it that…”
If we wanna call what what…? If we wanna call the “country” Wales? Or call their English-speaking “English”? 🤔
I like to make fun of other places. I’d have said the same thing about people speaking English in Arkansas. It just amuses me.
There are plenty areas very near our property where we won’t hunt thanks to the “abundance” of Grizzlies. Even with a 300 winmag topped out with 5 rounds I’d rather not run into them brown beasts…
