    I have a favorite book called Ghosts along the Mississippi, copy right 1948, by Clarence John Laughlin who was a photographer. I've had this book for at least 45 years. Belle Grove is in it, and I have always been completely fascinated with the house. When I saw this video come up I had to watch it, and it gave me chills. Beautiful video. Well done. I like the lack of commentary and the beautiful music. I'm subscribing as I see a lot of interesting videos on your channel.

      I grew up in South Louisiana and have always wanted a copy of Ghosts Along the Mississippi. Years later husband's job brought us to Whidbey Island, an hour north of Seattle. About 2014, our favorite second-hand book store closed, liquidating their entire stock. Guess what I found? A slightly worn copy of Ghosts Along the Mississippi, $5, with its' dust jacket! I spent many hours browsing in the shop but never noticed the book, which I keep "hidden" so it doesn't get damaged. What a small world we live in.

      @@TheSWalks I'm so glad you found it! It's a great book. I'm a northerner (Michigan), but have always been fascinated with that era of the south and love to look at the old houses, so many of which are long gone. I think black and white photos add to the mystique of the place. My book is in pretty good condition except for smelling musty after being in storage for years. Thank you for sharing. 😊

      My family had a copy of that book, when I was a child. I've been able to find a copy or two of the book, in the last several years, and I'm quite familiar with many of the houses in the book, some of which are gone now.

    The first house has such a beautiful setting. I just loved the long driveway and the old trees. Is the property being preserved? That broke my heart when I found out the second property had burnt down, a piece of history destroyed. The music you chose for the video was perfect!!

    This is one reason why we are divided as a nation.. life is about perspectives and everyone should have their own, but we should try to be empathic to others n threat them like we would want to be treated.. while this is a reminder of the beautiful old south to some, it is also a reminder of some horrific times for others..

    Hauntingly Beautiful. I loved ❤the wooden sign on the tree that was a magical touch by the previous owner. The pool said all !! The old school slide still in place. I can only imagine all the kids that have left the footprint of time on those steps. The second house is a testament to the grandure that belong to the south and her antebellum ways. Love your touch with the windchimes it add elegance to what to a house that has aged wonderfully. 🥰😍

      If the old south, Plantation and SLAVES are so fascinating why are books being banned that tell the story of the Old South and her ways being kept out of the hands of the students.
      Slavery is a shame on the face of America and a stench in the nostrils of God Almighty. Clearly some of those that OPPRESSED a people for centuries desire to do it again.

    It's tragic there was no attempt to save Belle Grove before the inevitable fire. I'm no "Gone with the Wind" dream walker, but a nation's cultural traditions, especially the most prominent ones are worthy of preservation.

      Thank you for your comments. This plantation was massive it would be too expensive to restore, even large historic mansions only a handful get saved. Not enough money or donations even when historical preservation steps in. Thank you for watching.

    • @williamneil8862
      @williamneil8862 5 місяців тому

      @@carolslade9600 It is a given, Carol, that a plantation that large, in that region, at that date of construction would have been an economic enterprise built on slavery with the added detail you provided. If we ought to save "monuments" from an age like that, in their preservation goes the story of the way of life that constructed it. I'm sure there were slave cabins on the grounds and they would be part of the restoration effort. The timing for preservation didn't work out; I should add that many now lost American buildings were detailed in architectural renderings commissioned by a workforce during the New Deal. I know they restored some Spanish missions in CA, not sure about mansions from Ante-Bellum period in the South.

    Belle Grove plantation mansion in Louisiana was THE LARGEST, not one of the largest. Belle Grove was called, "Queen of The South." Envied, but never replicated, it was the ultimate achievement in grand southern architecture. Vandalized, stripped, defaced, and rotting away, Belle Grove was destroyed by an arsonist in 1952 and burned to the ground. A tragedy to say the least. Long live the memory of the incomparable, magnificent Belle Grove Plantation of Louisiana. The link below is a wonderfully created video about Belle Grove in Louisiana.

      @@deborahcoliny2891 OH that is a shame. We have a ruin here in Virginia of a plantation house in Gloucester, County called Rosewell. It was built in the mid 18th century and was then the largest brick house in Colonial America. They say it had a staircase that was wide enough for eight people to walk up it side by side. Many prominent and famous people were guests there, including George Washington whose grandparents had a plantation nearby which is still there and lived in. Rosewell burned in 1915 and only the outer walls and chimneys still stand. The ruins have been stabilized and are open to the public.

    I could see one of my father's ancestors, walking up that beautiful staircase in the second Plantation. I'm a sensitive, half Hispanic, mexican on my mother's side. I never knew how deep my father's southern roots were. Until the mortician, I flew his deceased body to be buried, in Roanoke Virginia. Informed me that there was many civil war generals in the family from Georgia. It is what it is. And the past is the past. It would've been so nice if Belle had been preserved!!
