I had a log cabin in West Virginia built in 1935 by hunters on 2 acres of land. Original logs. Unfortunately I had to short sale it and moved to Florida. Somebody bought it and it’s been abandoned since 1998. I went back a few years ago and peeked inside. It was a haunting look into my past life as some of my stuff was still in there that I left hoping my Dad would take it but he never did. These videos make me think of life and how it gets left behind. I like your videos and the quiet comments giving us a chance to think.
The outside looks like a cabin you would find in a fairytale book! The inside sure took a beating though. I was totally surprised at the size of the basement! What a great find, bet it looked nice in it's day. Thanx
@@Astyanaz pretty sure re altering it won't work, as the wood has long suffered structural damage.....but nifty homework plus black widow....I say it's delapidated -
@@unrulyjulie4382 Especially since it was cheap compared to the 1/4" plywood version. We paneled the new bedroom we added to our summer cabin with the "3mm" stuff, even the ceiling.
I agree. I think it looks worthy of restoring. It would make a nice weekend or more cabin/house for one or two people. The setting looks nice too. It would have to be a labor of love.
I'd gut everything not original and get it back to its original structural construction. I'd then power wash everything and let it dry and then spray linseed oil on everything. Start fresh.
These guys aren't interested in saving anything, just going into other people's property. They don't even give the city's name or contact current owners or even contact local historical societies. It's a shame. They're not interested in preservation or restoration. They pretend to be though
Beautiful little log cabin from the outside. You get inside and someone made it ugly by putting up the junky wood paneling. That place could be saved. Another excellent video kappy!
You couldn't have picked a more perfect time to film the outside of that place. The new spring growth and blooming forsythia and white blossoms against the ancient structure was really stunning.
Again, you've found us a good one. It's so sad how neglected and abused (that paneling!) it's been. The fact that it's still standing is a testament to the craftsmanship of the people who built it. Thanks for sharing these great places with us each week. It truly is a bright spot in my week.
Bear in mind a real restoration means taking the logs apart, tagging them, cleaning them, repairing the bad pieces, then reassembling them with new caulking and wire. It's not just about making the cabin pretty inside like Bob Timberlake. I know some Amish who travel to restore these old cabins, and/or take them down to sell and rebuild them on someone's property. They know what they are doing and can get it done quickly (as opposed to you and me and some amateur cabin people). Just bear in mind that cabins are very dark and gloomy inside unless you can bear to sheetrock over those lovely logs. Except for the road, this is a gorgeous piece of property with the dogwood and forsythia.
Yes, I thought so too: probably a later addition, but well before electric and water installed, I think. Unheated places go to hell in a hurry. Even just two or three years can make a big difference.
What a relic. Love the old cabins and barns. We rented a really small old farmhouse and lined the walls with salvaged barn wood, keeping the rustic look we love so much. Eventually it was torn down when the owner died. History being removed.
Great old cabin. My guess is that it was originally one room with a loft. That pretty added gingerbread front porch is the bomb. The cellar would have probably been entered from the outside only and used for cooling for food. Love this explore.
What an adorable cabin! Loved the outside porch posts...very ornate for a cabin. The inside was so cut up...but if it could be rescued, I'd try to go for an open concept downstairs, turn the upstairs into an open loft. Beautiful place its located on too.
The bins in the basement were for keeping vegetables in sand, years ago little ability to keep things cool, basement was the best! Very well made cabin, think of the changes that house has seen! Amazing thanks and stay safe!
How sweet and peaceful that place must have been before the road was added. I love this cute little cabin. Could still be refinished. It's solid. The paneling that's covering the wood beans, that's a true shame. I would keep those beans exposed. The way I must have looked like brand new..... Wow, beautiful I'm sure.
Yeah its so weird! At 5:05 it looks quite spacious inside with a sizeable second floor. But at 10:04, the profile of the house seems so small. Might be an optical illusion with having such large "Hand hewn logs" making it look smaller than it is.
What a pretty place! I loved that cabin. I bet people were happy there it has a nice sweet, homely atmosphere to it. Thankyou for filming it to show us. It made me feel happy to see it.
How quaint and adorable from the outside. Wonder what the inside will be like?? How sad that the remodel wasn’t finished, it would be a good getaway little house for vacations ! Overwhelmed for sure!!
Such a charming old log house. Looks as though there were some attempts on upgrading. It would be a fabulous place to live if all restored and remodeled inside.
Blown glass is what we've been told by the historical society here. It's great it's not broken. If any building old enough to have it is set for demolition or changing to modern replacement windows we have many people who seek permission to salvage the windows for this glass. It's always great to see good timbers and elements such as that.
Jestin Kase It's actually called cylinder glass. My old farm house was built in 1850, we restored the windows using period glass. Crown glass is also wavy but was replaced with cylinder glass so that stuff is very hard to find. Cylinder glass was the first sheet glass.
An old 1800's cabin, with a Victorian porch added at some point along with the asbestos siding...and a 1970's interior redo. Just needs to be cleaned and gutted down to the old timber, re-mortared with chinking material and it will look brand new again.
That was a really neat find. That little building has a million stories and several lives. I think you’re right in that someone discovered the logs and decided to renovate but quickly got overwhelmed. I think I would too. Love the signs of spring. How many old houses have forsythia and spring blooming trees and shrubs? Neat explore even if it was a bit disappointing to see paneling and makeshift bath and kitchen from 80s maybe? Then again, that’s part of the story too. Kind of looks like tobacco barn but the basement/foundation more like a house. Thanks as always. Check your Instagram dm. My husband showed me and old cemetery and lodge (?) and I shared a few pics. Happy hunting and be safe. ❤️

That is definitely old windows the way the glass rippled. That would have made a great little getaway cabin at one time. The basement has a bit of a creepy vibe. Great video, how do you find such great places to explore? Looking forward to the next video, as always be careful and be safe.
What a darling little cabin at some time. Whoever remodeled it however wasn't at all a certified flipper. It was a horrible remodel for such what was once an adorable little cute cabin. The property outdoors was majestic. I'd just set up a tent and live outdoors. Thanks for sharing, awesome video. My dream home at one time.
Interesting little place where they probably had a kid or two (or more). I was intrigued by that gate-leg table on the second floor, as I don't remember seeing one before (not that there weren't any, just that I don't *remember)* and never one with only one drop leaf. Nice find, Kappy, as usual.
I picture this cabin with exposed log walls, a leather love seat, some polished antiques including an old spinning wheel. A quaint fireplace and some interesting old books to read. Please, take away that cheap paneling. Was that really a black widow spider? that would be the 1st thing to go! The place could have been fabulous if done right. So much potential. I want that "cute door knob" I make rustic crafts out of old knobs and pieces of the original door..I make rustic board signs...seeing old knobs, window panes, etc. Stuff like that is like finding gold...for me! Great video, thank you, from Ontario, Canada
What a find. The little cabin shows the hewn marks of early squared up timbers. Do you think the historical society would be interested in gutting out the inside to bring it back to original. They could place on one of the “Historical Society” books. You took your time to show what might be original. Great video. God Bless.
It's still a cozy little place, I bet those original timbers were 100 years old, when they were used to build this little 'Doll House' Another great video Kappy, you sure caught the flowers at the right time!
I loved this one it was so quirky the walls were so thick. When you were looking out the window that looks like a sidewalk you would see in any neighborhood. The outside looks like it is straight out of a storybook 👍❤
What a great little house! Where is this place in relation to a town since the view out the front window seemed to include very close proximity to a sidewalk? Can yo find out anything about its history?

It wouldn't be too difficult to get it back to it's original beauty. Most of the damage is the modernization done horribly wrong. Even the original fireplace could be rebuilt I didn't see too much damage on the corners and even most of the chinking is still intact. That's one to save! Thanks for finding this one!
Gorgeous woodwork on the front porch. That is a really interesting cabin but it's hard to imagine anyone living in it as recently as 2009. Trying to improve the inside without sealing up the outside is bound to fail.
Looks like remuddling of all sorts. The foundation looks a later period like the cabin was jacked off the ground and moved, the fireplace removed ( you can see butt-outs that cover whatever is left of it inside the front hall, and upstairs is a butt out covering the chimney. Well at least its not as badly remuddled as a house in Baltimore that was once a toll keepers house. They removed the 2nd floor and its dormers, removed the fireplace, and added an addition on the back. The 360 view for the real estate listing has it still furnished. Looked like it was being rented to 4 college guys. Ok, it was a very creepy cramped house back when I looked at it in the 80's, but geeze, remove the 2nd floor and fireplace? I think it was built like 1830.

So sad! A really great early American cabin, murdered with cheap 70's paneling! 😢
"Modernized," or what our local historical society calls "re-muddling." But it was probably nice when first installed.
As I was watching, I was thinking that covering those walls with that hideous paneling should be a crime. Then I saw your post. Amen!

Gorgeous woodwork on the front porch. That is a really interesting cabin but it's hard to imagine anyone living in it as recently as 2009. Trying to improve the inside without sealing up the outside is bound to fail.
Suzan Tonn I felt like maybe someone was going there to study, but not living there
Looks like remuddling of all sorts.
Outside is so cute. Thanks for showing.
