Tony & Chelsea Northrup I've used the gh5 with the metabones Xl and haven't had any issues with vignette. I've been using the kit 12-60 and 200-400 Leica lenses primarily tho. I'll be testing the sigmas more in the next month.
Yep usability is so important. I think a lot of people forget about that and get worried a little too much about specs. Whatever gets you out and and filming easily and quickly is really key.
For a professional reviewer that is normally very critical, you are extremely forgiving regarding the GH5.the battery is the clincher for you.Surely you can carry a few small batteries around .You mention nothing about the moire and compression artefacts seen in some reviews on the footage. Why would someone who just does product reviews and uploads to UA-cam in 1080 p require a camera that has 10 Bit 4.2.2 etc if he just needs a flip out viewfinder there are more reasonable options even In Panasonic's range. So a semi -pro user would not really want a selfie screen and if you have a camera man you wouldn't necessarily need one,not saying it's a hindrance but not such a great asset in this kind of camera,Quality and resolution is more important, although not a very expensive option for a pro.I sure you mentioned in a previous review that Sonys autofocus was good and yet you only mentioned Canon as having reliable autofocus.Well I suppose in general Panasonic needs some good reviews as there seems a lot of people I know that have returned their GH5...
Great review guys! You really brought up the things that's relevant for real life usage. Thumbs up! And yeah, looks like we're going for a GH5 for our channel as well.
Hank Roest K signifies a ~1000 horizontal pixels. (16:9) 3840×2160 = 4K (8.2944 MP) Hence, 1920×1080 is actually 2K (2.0736 MP) 60K would be 57600×32400, which is 1866.24 MegaPixel. If you multiply the K magnitude by x, the megapixel count gets multiplied by x².

Yes, MP(Megapixel) is a million pixels, since *Mega* signifies 10⁶. Ex. 1920×1080= 2,073,600 pixels = 2.0736MP Similarly, K is ~1000 pixels, since *Kilo* signifies 10³. Ex. 3840×2160 is 4K because the horizontal resolution is ~4000. The MP count of 4K(8.2944 MP) is 2² times that of 2K(1920×1080) because 4K=2K×2. great review and thanks for the tips that continuous focus is still better on the 70D. was looking for a camera that is lighter and portable to replace my 70D but when you mentioned that the continuous focus is not as good as the 70D, I decided to just hold back and wait for something else that might come out. thanks again for the review. thumbs up!

Did Tony use "30p" and "cinematic" in the same sentence? If I never see 30p again, I would be thrilled. I want everything to be in 24p. Tony - I need some help... We do golf course vlogs where we play golf and film our rounds. I am shooting w/ the Leica SL using a 21mm Summilux lens and a Leica Q. I mainly use the Leica Q but its constantly hunting and trying to focus and it doesn't have a 4K option. The Leica SL is great but with the manual lens I can only use it for speciality shots. We only use the SL in the 120fps mode so we can get some nice slow mo shots of golf swings. With the SL 24-90 lens its way too heavy to use on a gimbal or in selfie/vlog format. I am thinking of selling all my Leica gear and getting into something else but am not sure where to go. I want to start doing everything in 4K but can't find a camera that can do 120fps in 4K aside from cinema style cameras like the RED. Is there anything on the market that can do 4K 120fps at 8bit or 10bit? The EOS-1D X Mark II seems to be the closest w/ 4K at 60fps but its heavy so wouldn't work on the crane gimbal. Please help! Drop the amazon/B&H affiliate links too, I want you to get paid for the great content/tips you are putting out. I've got a bunch of Leica gear as well if you know anyone interested. Leica Summilux 21mm, 35mm, 50mm, Leica SL, Leica Q, Leical SL 24-90mm and more...
For lightweight camera blogging, the Olympus Tough TG-870, which I saw demonstrated on a YT bloggers program is a possible option you may be interested in. the monitor opens till it is upside down at the top facing the blogger. It is waterproof, dustproof and impact resistant to about 2.1 metres approx - mine recently fell on a stone floor without any harm at all. It has a cool panorama feature and is a compact camera. It is freeze resistant to 10°C, and has 16mps.
Tony you video, how you explain products, the depth you go into is totally great, very informative and helpful Thank you a bunch I am learning more since watching you and Chelsea. Greetings From Vancouve Canada:)
Thank you Tony for the excellent review. This is much needed for those who have invested for the new GH5 and its accompanying accessories. Looking forward to more GH5 reviews on lenses and other tips. Cheers!
@1:29 What ? The voice says "in the GH4 they cropped in significantly" the visual also shows a cropped in image, but the text super says [GH5 Handheld Footage]. Doesn't add up.
YES! Touch to autofocus with the app while in manual focus mode is great for filming ourselves. I don't know why more don't mention this. The Panasonic remote app is way less hassle than the one for Sony cameras too.
i rented an a6500 for one day, and yes, no flip out screen, but once you "know" where your lens is and what it captures, you can rely on the auto-focus and just point the camera. if framing is absolutely critical, sure maybe not the best option. but for the typical vlog and you with something close in the shot, i nailed it everytime. the 10-18mm lens of course helps with this, but we all need the right tools for the situation. man i want that again!
Would be cool to see something like the bird video with various long wildlife lenses. Just the difference between this expensive 500/4.0 and something like one of the (now many) much cheaper 150-600 lenses alone would be interesting. "What do you get in 4K video by spending more on lenses."
Tony you made me laugh!!.."forget your full frame biases and give the whole speed booster system a chance" LOL its funny because I have both full frame and m43 system, and I pick up my Panasonic GH5 most of the time! Im definitely having fun with it more!
At around 4:20 you begin talking about the 4k digital tele converter setting and using it for low light. I read what the manual said about the tele converter setting, but I still don't understand why you're making such a setting change for low light shooting and what effect it has. Can you clarify this particular point, please?
Tony, what about the Sony A5100 (along with the Canon M5/70d/80d)? Phase detect, touch focus, flip up screen. The only downside I see is overheating to be honest.
Very thoughtful review! I've had my GH5 since January 2018, use it weekly to video record my tennis matches and it's inspired me to learn more about photography and video than I ever knew before. For its small sensor size it takes nice video and I love the form factor, too bad the Sony full frame mirrorless cameras aren't as easy to handle. Thanks for your videos. You make learning about photography and video really fun. Ian in San Diego
The part I agree with the most is what Tony says at the end of the camera being so useable. Sure there are areas where it falls short but overall the hardware gets out of the way and lets you shoot! Which is the reason I have never really looked at other cameras outside of the GH-series from Panasonic. I am still using a GH3 and while old it still works well enough for me, mind you I would love to upgrade not really for 4K since I can't process that, but for the IBIS. Maybe I will look at a G85 which has many of the same feature at a lower price point.
Massively well done Tony and Chelsea! Will share on planet5D. You've talked about all the significant points and will convince many this is the camera for them.
Two related reviews I'd love to see from you: 1) Cameras compared for video when using best output to an appropriate Atomos recorder (less overheating issues? no 30 min limit?, external power, 60p?, 4:2:x, 8bit vs 10bit, etc.); a6500, a7Sii, a7Rii, a9, GH5, maybe vs FS5 as a base cine camera benchmark. Does using an Atomos external recorder change the camera equation? 2) video comparison FS5 vs GH5, both internal recording, and using Atomos external. Sony a9 owner, hybrid shooter of stills and video, mirrorless devotee, trying to pick an A-roll video camera for general video use with a9 as B-roll; documentary, interview, corporate, instructional, + vlog etc. I am torn between clear benefits of GH5, and value of staying with my large and growing Sony E-Mount lens collection; whether FS5, a6500, a7Sii, a7Rii or a second a9. Can't find anyone reviewing Sony limitations (battery capacity, overheating, 30 min limit, single SD card, and best output image quality - 8 vs 10 bit, 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2, & sensor size), in the context of recording external to Atomos. I'm thinking recording external may obviate some of the classic Sony limitations? Also assuming use of a camera cage might allow clamping cables to help mitigate the awful, fiddly, micro-HDMI? You probably want a cage to adequately mount the Atomos anyway. A cage also helps make external power more practical? FS5 is $1,000 rebate throughout August, making it a reasonable stretch option. About $5,200 with kit lens. More, but full cine camera. Hoping a9 gets firmware upgrade for improved video feature support that it should be capable of, maybe with external raw. Thanks! I love the detail, care, and relative objectivity of your reviews!
Great video. People love to complain about silly things. There is NO perfect camera. You have to learn your equipment and use it to the best of it's ability. I LOVE the GH5. You can not get specs like it has for a cheaper price.
Hi Tony, I am sure you are already aware of the Aputure DEC Lens Regain device but I thought I would add a comment so other viewers can be aware. I mention this because if they want auto focus to react as if a human was controlling it on a GH5 when they are say vlogging they could use the remote on this device to always be in focus and have total control. This is a great technology that will change the way some users will use focus pull.
I gave you a like ;) Thanks for all your real workload input and advice... You are one of the few channels which reviews products the way most people are going to use them instead of relying on worthless information. By the way, I bought the Olympus after your impressive review in that "Ghost Town" and couldn't be happier with it. I mostly shoot with Sonys, having gotten fed up with Nikon's and Canon's idiocies and overall stupidity, for by Urban Exploration/Hacking videos and stills... Could you do a review on the low light performance of the GH5 in such environments/circumstances? I use external lighting sources and "light painting" wherever I can but in most "Hacking a.k.a. braking in" jobs it's just not possible to carry around that much gear. Again, thanks for all your hard work, while always having so much fun, which makes our work so much easier and enjoyable, Cheers.
hmm, i'd say the Auto Focus on the A6500 is stellar and comparable to the 80D for sure. i kept it in Wide mode (so it chooses the subject) and it nailed everything i intended perfectly. :D
I'm a tad confused on that speed booster explaination. with the speed booster XL why did you use the ex/ telephone converter mode? and wouldn't a .71x speed booster get rid of the vinetting?
Great vid, we're still trying to figure out the best af settings, so many opinions out there. I've shot 4 vids with the gh5 and have had varying results. Seems lighting can play a part in the gh5's ability to focus quick. Still learning the ins and outs.
So, how many years off of 60k are we do you think?? 😜 - Good recap on the camera. I have had it for a month and I am loving it! It's not perfect. No camera is really. But, I have had phenomenal results using the new 12-35 II and the 42.5 Noct. F1.2 ✌️
Great video Tony & Chelsea. Agree with pretty much everything. I'm keeping mine and selling off the a6500. For me it's that 10 bit image and V-Log. Banding is reduced so much it makes using an external record unnecessary. One issue I'm having is using an external microphone and HDMI output at the same time. The audio has a lot of latency. This is really annoying when using headphones and recording interviews. I hope this can be fixed in firmware.
I keep wondering where can you get a24 to 600 mm equivalent lens that fits on this camera you got some thick League nearly perfect visually and free of chromatic aberration like the lens built into the Sony rx10 Mark 3.
I agree with most of your points but the countinuous autofocus on the Sony a6500 does work really well for most of those unboxing style videos on you UA-cam, and much better than the gh5. Still want both though!
Any adapter out there in market which allows at least to control the aperture for Nikkor 200-500mm mounted on GH5, as the lens got electromagnetic aperture mechanism ? Did not see anything on Metabone website for wildlife i need adapter, not speedbooster.
Finally someone who understands why people like continous autofocus. If i work alone and film myself in what ever situation than it is nice to have a focus-system of a 70D.
I've been using a sony a-mount 16-50mm f2.8 on GH3 and GH4, it's super sharp and amazing bokeh, I highly recommend it if the sigma option is too expensive
ive trying to move away from Sony Alpha A mount for 7 years now but havent been brave enough to upgrade from Sony A77. is there a adapter for Sony A MOUNT to MFT with speedbooster? i shoot alot of low light stuff and i want to stop using a LED light on top of my Sony A77
@5:59 please tell me this was shot at a really high iso and not focused correctly becuase there seems to be noise where there shouldn't be. Great video btw
I am thinking about buying the metabones ultra, or is it a better choice to get the xl? I wanna use as many EF lenzes as possible with a speed booster.
hey i hope you will help me.I have canon rebel t7i for four months and it's dynamic range sucks.what should i do?it's dynamic range should be similar as 80d's but it isn,t please chack out this problem for me.
Thanks for the comments on the GH5. Panasonic has done a good job adding features to their GH cameras over the years (I’ve owned GH2, GH3 and GH4), and I’m considering the GH5 as a B-cam. May I ask what editing program you use? I have read that the new version of Adobe Premiere Pro has trouble recognizing GH5 footage.
Nice information on the AF system, if you need to depend on the AF system get another brand, not Panasonic. On the other hand you can make it more easy to work the focus on the camera by using the right lens, or adding optional display if you do vlogging so you can keep track of what is going on. But someone who does vlogging all the time should probably get another camera for that. What Panasonic should do with the GH5 AF system is to add a manual mode for touch-to-focus so you can lock in the focus once and it stays there, no tracking or anything, just a simple touch and you get the focus. If you then move or need to do a refocus, touch again where you want it to focus. And using the smartphone app as Tony is doing in this video will probably work fine. You might not be able to do a lot of walk and talk videos, but you can use other equipment for that. The GH5 is a superb camera for the price, do not let the AF system prevent you from buying the camera if you want it. Nice video and great location, relocate the studio to that location Tony ;-)
Whoa wait why would I use a crop lens on a M43 camera? I mean according to your other videos a FF lens on a a crop body produces worse results than a crop on a crop. Wouldn't that be true for Crop to M43s? Enlighten me please.
Would like a GH5 but can't really afford to replace my current 2 GH4's. To be honest though, the GH4s have been doing an awesome job for me in my video productions and with them being just under $1000 right now I'm thinking of getting a 3rd.
Out of Topic.... Ehiiiiii I saw a Miranda camera on the background!!! My first reflex when i was a boy, the Miranda RE II (i think the model just after the one in your video). So many memories... Miranda was a great brand, such a pity that in 1977 they closed... Is your model still working?
/Why are you using 0.64 with the Sigma 18-35? I don't understand. With the GH4 is made sense because of the extra crop at 4k. but GH5 doesn't crop in 4k then the video is shooting at X1.28 crop and the lens has a 1.5X crop. So then isn't there a whole bunch of vingetting especially at the wider focal length. Doesn't the 0.71 give you x1.42 crop more closely matching the APS-C crop?
Your reviews keep getting better and better. As an 85% stills shooter, I'm happy I own the EM1ii, but the GH5 is extremely compelling. When you talk about the Sigma's with Metabones being more sharp than native M43 glass, are you talking stills too or just for video? Wondering if I need to look at Sigma for stills. Thanks
Have you tried the AF-C on the X-T2 with 2.0 Firmware with Face Recognition? Does a good job. Question would be, would it be better than the GH5 (most likely at this point) or the Sony 6300?
Hi! Can you share you rode/camera settings for audio, it´s just doesn't work as good as my canon, I´m trying to find the best setting in both, the rode pro (-20/ 0 or +20) and the camera audio levels. Thanks!
I now own a Panasonic GH5 but can't seem to get by a problem of sorts. I need to shoot 4k/60fps and playback on the camera's flip monitor with the slo-mo effect but on playback, it does so in normal speed. I have the LIVE VIEW set to 30fps and would hope the play back would be slowed down. This is important as my clients want to see the shot as they would in a finished edit. Is this possible to accomplish?
It says on the Metabones website that the Speedbooster XL is not compatible with the OMD EM1 MK II. Is this a mistake in your video or is the Metabones website wrong?
Tony hi could please help me? I purchased a Panasonic GH5. The plan is to pick up a Panasonic H-NS043 LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH LUMIX G for the GH5. My main focus for buying the GH5 and this particular lens is for making videos (vlogging). Question: putting a speed booster along with the 42.5mm F1.2, would that improve the photo/video quality of that lens or with such a lens would it be redundant using a speed booster? If a Metabone Speed Booster will give an even better cinematic photography effect (stills & 4k video) which type of speed booster should I purchase? XL 0.64x Adapter for full-frame Canon EF-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds-Mount Camera??? Thank you very much for you help. Much appreciated. Garfield
Any chance you would review the panasonic 100-400mm lens on the GH5 for both stills and video, would love to see what you could produce with that combo, and really interested in what video quality it can put out!!!

Hello Tony! If I use the Sigma 18-35 with a Metabones, will I be able to correct the vignetting in Lightroom with a profile correction? Thank you!
Great review! I decided to get both the GH5 and the Canon 77D. The 77D will be used for product demos and the GH5 will be used for everything else.

Also this was the best review for the gh5 that I've seen. No BS, easy to understand, covered it all. Top job tony and chelsea!
Chris Winter Rian from Film Riot made a great review too.
+Chris Winter Thanks!
Please do a comparison between GH5, Sony A7s and Sony a6500!
By the way I love your Videos.

"60 K is still a few years off"
Panasonic: Challenge accepted
Brings out a bracket to mount many GH5s together
That would be 124 megapixels. (with K=1080x1920)
Hank Roest K signifies a ~1000 horizontal pixels. (16:9)
3840×2160 = 4K (8.2944 MP)
Hence,
1920×1080 is actually 2K (2.0736 MP)
60K would be 57600×32400, which is 1866.24 MegaPixel.
If you multiply the K magnitude by x, the megapixel count gets multiplied by x².
This is all in fun of course, but I'll explain the way I threw the numbers around to get 124. I figured: if "4K" is 4 times 1080x1920, then 60K would be 60 times that which is 124,416,000. Now, doesn't MP mean million pixels in spec parlance? ;-)
Yes, MP(Megapixel) is a million pixels, since *Mega* signifies 10⁶.
Ex. 1920×1080= 2,073,600 pixels = 2.0736MP
Similarly, K is ~1000 pixels, since *Kilo* signifies 10³.
Ex. 3840×2160 is 4K because the horizontal resolution is ~4000.
The MP count of 4K(8.2944 MP) is 2² times that of 2K(1920×1080) because 4K=2K×2.
The MP count of 60K would be 30² times 2K because 60K=2K×30.
To demonstrate why your logic fails, while "4K" is 4 times 1920×1080, "8K" is *not* 8 times 1920×1080.
If you look it up, 8K is actually 4 times 4K, which makes it 16 times 1920×1080.
So, K≠1920×1080.
Hope the info is useful.

Which do you prefer: 60K at 4fps or 4K at 60fps? :)
60K at 4fps is pretty sweet but finding a lens that can keep up would be a pain so I'll stick to 4K at 60 fps. For now...
Burak Bağdatlı with 60k you can make 180 megpixel stills😀
i need to upgrade my gfx rams cpu asap
🤣🤣😂 60k at 4fps would look so bad. It would look like reality until anything moved, and it would be too blurry or to stroboscopic to even look at.

Creative North I totally agree
True. Now I know what to buy, and I don't want to have that GAS 😝
Great detailed review
yes agree, great review!
The shot with the bird flying over the water @ 12:50 looks pretty bad. Is that UA-cam compression making it fall apart due to the high motion?

Awesome review as always guys. One of my favorite UA-cam channels for sure!
I'm seriously impressed with the stability of the Olympus that Chelsea is filming on, hand held...dang!
I film all of my reviews on a Panasonic FZ300 and it does pretty good 4K, might consider something like this when the price is right :)
A year later, still great!
Pretty damn nice to see all the comparisons shown with live footage. Thanks for that.
Would be cool to see something like the bird video with various long wildlife lenses. Just the difference between this expensive 500/4.0 and something like one of the (now many) much cheaper 150-600 lenses alone would be interesting. "What do you get in 4K video by spending more on lenses."
here we go let the comments roll! thanks for this tony and thanks for your hard work on getting us these videos/reviews!

Such a useful video, Tony. And for free! Thanks! That watch you were wearing in the last PTC looked cool - you should put a link for that up!
Great reviews guys! Best I've seen for this camera so far.
You keep making us proud Tony. I'm all mushy inside.
I like your new vlogging style. It's so "now".
Thanks, Mitch!
Great video! You gained one extra star in my rating by choosing GH5 over Sony A7s for video.
I pre ordered my GH5 last month from B&H and got a 3 year warranty on both this and the G85. Totally worth it.
Two related reviews I'd love to see from you:
1) Cameras compared for video when using best output to an appropriate Atomos recorder (less overheating issues? no 30 min limit?, external power, 60p?, 4:2:x, 8bit vs 10bit, etc.); a6500, a7Sii, a7Rii, a9, GH5, maybe vs FS5 as a base cine camera benchmark.
I gave you a like ;)
Thanks for all your real workload input and advice...
Again, thanks for all your hard work, while always having so much fun, which makes our work so much easier and enjoyable,
Cheers.
Great review as always. Best on the GH5 that I have seen by far.
Tony, I love your videos. Great job.
Learned a few new tricks that I can use on my Panasonic in this video. Thanks! Much appreciated.
Thanks for showing the picture styles. As always, a really useful review.
hmm, i'd say the Auto Focus on the A6500 is stellar and comparable to the 80D for sure. i kept it in Wide mode (so it chooses the subject) and it nailed everything i intended perfectly. :D
Hi, I have problem with V Log ON my GH5 could not find Vlog on my display menu ,can you fix the problem .
Awesome video Tony, thanks.
Still want both though!
with the 4k still mode does that produce a 18mp jpeg file? it doesn't produce a 18mp raw file does it?
Any adapter out there in market which allows at least to control the aperture for Nikkor 200-500mm mounted on GH5, as the lens got electromagnetic aperture mechanism ? Did not see anything on Metabone website for wildlife i need adapter, not speedbooster.
Finally someone who understands why people like continous autofocus. If i work alone and film myself in what ever situation than it is nice to have a focus-system of a 70D.
Great review - thank you so much! Greetings from Germany, Dirk
I've been using a sony a-mount 16-50mm f2.8 on GH3 and GH4, it's super sharp and amazing bokeh, I highly recommend it if the sigma option is too expensive
ive trying to move away from Sony Alpha A mount for 7 years now but havent been brave enough to upgrade from Sony A77. is there a adapter for Sony A MOUNT to MFT with speedbooster? i shoot alot of low light stuff and i want to stop using a LED light on top of my Sony A77
always great video, information, great all around! in my amazon cart!
Didn't Premiere have problems reading 10bit? I havent bought the gh5 yet but that's what I read on Dan Watsons channel yesterday.
I thought the Hi-Res mode is 80MP on the EM1ii?
Whoa wait why would I use a crop lens on a M43 camera? I mean according to your other videos a FF lens on a a crop body produces worse results than a crop on a crop. Wouldn't that be true for Crop to M43s? Enlighten me please.
@1:32 is this atlanits Dubai ?
Can you record in 60fps and play it normal in a 24fps timeline?
What about the SL2 for vlogging and it's continuous auto focus?
Any chance of getting some info on the song at 2:30. That funky chop is da bomb.
Great real world review. Those are most of the reasons I bought one.
Love watching your videos man. You sound just like Jeff Goldblum:)
Thanks
Stills and video.
How does Canon EOS M50 stack up against M6 & D80 autofocus? vs. Olympus TG-5?
Agreed, Panasonic definitely have been nailing the usability of their flip out series cameras.
13:35, sensor stabilisation is that bad? why is the lens/sensor/video stab more shaky that the lens/sensor stabilization, it doesn't make any sens.
yeah doesn't make any lense
yes that was a pun
I'll just gtfo
Have you tried the AF-C on the X-T2 with 2.0 Firmware with Face Recognition? Does a good job. Question would be, would it be better than the GH5 (most likely at this point) or the Sony 6300?
What do you think of the pana leica 12-60mm 2.8-4 + olympus 7-14mm 2.8 + noticron for this camera?
Great review! Will buy it for sure.
The 1DX II does 4K at 60P, relatively manageable crop, just use a wider focal length, and it's FF, excellent low light, and Dual Pixel AF.
and is twice the price of the GH5
What speed booster would I need to purchase to use my canon/Tamron lenses on the GH5
By the way, thanks for reviewing the Vlog-L!
Any chance y'all would do a comparison of em1mk2 against the new g9 for stills? I am researching mirrorless m3/4 for the size benefits.
Ok Tony... one camera for both video and stills? Your choice please?
Would love a follow-up with the 2.6 firmware. Thoughts on the camera with the latest version?
It says on the Metabones website that the Speedbooster XL is not compatible with the OMD EM1 MK II. Is this a mistake in your video or is the Metabones website wrong?
It seemed to work fine and didn't hit the sensor. Not sure why it wouldn't be compatible.
Tony hi could please help me?
I purchased a Panasonic GH5.
The plan is to pick up a Panasonic
H-NS043 LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH LUMIX G for the GH5.
