I do wish Olympus would really step up their game even further when it comes to video. They need to make a camera at least as capable as the GH5 when it comes to video. Ideally, they should aim to surpass it...maybe something more like the BMPCC 4K but with image stabilization and phase-detect autofocus. But they need to put out some more firmware to improve video quality on their existing cameras. At that $2,999 price point, the OM-D E-M1X should have been an absolute beast for video, but there's still no 10-bit, no 4K 60 fps, and very soft 1080p video if you want to shoot slow motion. The variable data rate often dips too low and is inconsistent. Not to mention things like shutter angles, waveforms, vectorscopes, and a LUT monitor. At the very least, they should let you output 10-bit 4:2:2 to an external recorder. My Panasonic G85 is a better video camera than even the E-M1X in many respects...at a fraction of the cost. Sure, the autofocus sucks and there's a 1.25X crop when shooting 4K, but the video I get out of it is lovely.
@@stoneofverbosity You may be catastrophizing a bit. Olympus didn't go under; it sold away the imaging business to JIP. Now, maybe that means new Olympus gear will no longer be produced, or maybe it means something else. Not everyone wants to haul those huge and expensive lenses around, especially while doing sports and wildlife photography with telephoto lenses. I got a bit of a backache last weekend just hauling my E-M1 II around with the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO. Imagine if it were even bigger and heavier! There is still a value proposition for Micro Four Thirds.
Fujifilm is another company that bocks up marketing sometimes. The X-T3 for example seems to have multiple native ISOs at 160, 800, and 2000 (basically all noise cleans up when using these ISO values), yet no marketing talks about this. Of course I shot my first project at ISO640; had I just stepped up by one value... It took pal2tech on UA-cam to find out. Now I'm doing such an ISO test for all cameras I can get my hands on to build a nice database (currently Fuji X-T3, X-T20, Olympus E-M1 II).
You could film most vloggers videos on a kodak easyshare from 2009. The EM1-II is insanely capable, to call it a vlogging camera is an understatement. More professional photographers and videographers should start looking more seriously at Olympus and the M43 market in general.
@@Iamtongue Yeah it's so dumb. Like a 24+ megapixel sensor makes your images that much better. That's great if you're making prints for a billboard but for like general photography and videography you literally never need more than 16. @@Iamtongue So, I'm trying really hard to love my m43 system, but I keep really struggling and wanting for a Sony system. The noise, odd crop compared to a more standard photo layout, absolutely terrible video autofocus, and near inability to get low depth of field during video (sure I can be super expensive lenses, or stand 24 miles away, but I don't always want to do that) just make it challenging for me to feel like I made a good purchase for my shooting desires. Interested in your thoughts.
3 years old, but better than ever, I guess. I loved the firmware update for my Sony a7 III earlier this year. I'm sure that those who have stuck with this Olympus camera also feel happy about receiving something that improves their camera significantly.
Thank you so much for this. I'm upgrading my G7 and I'll definitely be grabbing this over the gh5 (was also considering the g85). Headphone jack, ibis, and good auto focus without having to change camera systems is a relief.
Three years on, the Em1.2 is still a fantastic camera. It was a terrific camera at launch but folks couldn't wrap their heads around $2000 for a micro 4/3 body - and maybe rightfully so. Firmware 3.0 has made a great camera even greater and now you can get a new one for $1500. I tested the Oly against the Fuji X-T2 and X-T3 and for me it was clearly the better choice. IQ was on par with the Fujis, but the ergonomics weren't even close, not to mention the customization. I even tested the high resolution mode of the Em1.2 against the 100 MP PhaseOne IQ3. Looking at 16X20 prints, there was no discernible difference between the two. I asked a number of professional photographers (including two from the Smithsonian) and no one could say definitively which was which.
Incredible comment! Thank you for your insight! I totally agree. The ergonomics and color science really are incredible with the Oly! For video now with that v3 firmware and getting one used, its a way better option than the Sony a6600 in my opinion! Better ibis and better color along with a better side flip screen.
I'm surprised more people aren't using this as well. I sold my Sony and lenses a few months ago to switch to the em1 mkii and couldn't be happier. Excellent auto focus and currently the only one with phase detect. The ibis is best in class and there are some fantastic photo features you won't find outside of Olympus. I do miss the 120fps but honestly I can airways use my phone to capture slow motion if needed. Glad you're enjoying yours and so happy to see someone else talking about this micro for thirds beast.
I’m right there with you on this! I have other tools to help with slow motion and the size and price of the E-M1 mkii is so hard to beat! What lenses do you have for it?
@@connormccaskill when I got the camera I picked up the 45mm 1.8, 30mm macro, and a cheap zoom to start 40-150 I believe. Shortly after I got a 12-40 2.8 pro for a steak and recently purchased the 9-18 to test for vlogging. I had surgery in July so I haven't been able to try it out yet but I'm hoping another week or so and I'll be able to get it again and see how that side angle lens works. 12 is a bit tight for me after using the Sony 10-18 previously so I'm hoping this works well.
Dave, I also wanted to say if you wanted the smallrig half cage for the em1 mkii, it's discontinued and no longer on their site or b&h. I just ordered one on ebay for under $40 though. Looks like it is coming directly from smallrig in China so I'm not sure why they have them on eBay but not their site.
It's good, but it's not as good as Panasonic. Sure, the phase-detect autofocus is great, but video has almost always been about manual focus anyway. Relying on autofocus on a video camera with shallow depth of field is a relatively new idea. So, professional videographers who aren't filming themselves for a UA-cam vlog probably don't care about the better video AF on the Olympus. They want the consistent video quality and bitrate, superior color space, waveforms, vectorscopes, shutter angle, LUT monitor, full-size HDMI port, and XLR audio input options of the GH5 or GH5s. Those cameras also have far superior 1080p footage (up to 180 fps) and 4K at 60 fps. That's not to say the E-M1 II is a bad video camera, but it's nowhere near the professional video tool that the GH5 is.
Dude hell yeah! You look like you’re having fun using the camera. I went back to Canon with the EOS R. I was using my Sony A7R3/A73 cameras, I wasn’t having fun and fighting with the cameras, so I sold them and all the lenses, bought the EOS R and have zero regrets. Even built an IG account around it just for fun that ended up exploding. Great, awesome video Dave!
I started off with Olympus over 20 years ago and i'm still with them. I have the Em1 Mk 2 now and 40-150mm pro lens and Olympus 100-400mm lens. I also have Olympus EM10 Mk3 and still use.
Kinotika - Hosted By Dave Maze 12-100 pro, 12/2 and 17/1.8. It’s a combo that allows me to go small when I want to document my daily dad-life and the 12-100 is boss for video. I am considering a 17/1.2 Pro. If you want a fun and super bright lens with vintage loom, the Speedmaster 25/0.95 is solid.
I had the original E-M1 and sold it after upgrading to the E-M1 II. The E-M1X and E-M1 III are really just incremental upgrades. The ProRes RAW support is neat, but I don't really need that. 10-bit 4:2:2, a stable high data rate, and better quality in UHD and 1080p would be more important to me...and those newer Olympus cameras still lack those things.
3:38 dude!! Smooth moves! Haha amazing! Very cool review. Also the autofocus looks great. I mean, 12-bit raw is cool and all but sometimes you just want to record something right away. I like that the autofocus follows you and it also has smooth transitions. Thanks for the review.

So now Olympus released an E-M5 Mark III and E-M1 Mark III that both have 120 fps, so you have other options. And we know damn well that the E-M1 II is capable of 120 fps because it has the same processor as the E-M5 Mark III, if only Olympus would release a firmware update that included this.
I got an E-M1x for the video features over my E-M1ii, but have been using the E-M1ii more for video than the E-M1x since the 3.0 firmware update. So now I have two good video bodies whereas before the firmware update I really only had one. I have been using the 12-100 f/4 Pro zoom for the lens IS on the E-M1ii with a Shinobi and cage at the dog park and it is an awesome and light rig for recording a lot of action using CAF.
So is the lens IS working alongside the IBIS like the Dual IS on Panasonic? If so, is it significantly better than with a non stabilized lens like the 12-45 2.8?
Hi, I picked up one of these for a really good price. what accessories were you using with this camera? (the panny 10-25 is bit out of my budget) besides that what are the other things that you have used Cage, mic, other lens etc .. Thanks
I think the Panasonic 12-35mm original is a great bargain if you can find one used and a fantastic all around option for the camera. I don’t use any cages. I’m a fan of the Olympus 17mm f1.8 or the Panasonic Leica 15mm
@@connormccaskill Thing! :) I myself use similar frame curtains on clips: esco-pro.ru/ They do not fly even at a speed of more than 100 km\h and rubbish from the street does not fly into the cabin.
Great review! I noticed the autofocus has improved a lot since firmware 3. I've stopped manually focusing for my vids and now just use face detect. Autofocus for action photography is so good now it's like getting all new lenses too.
Great video, for a little advice on the film mode, try shooting muted in 4K (nor Cinema 4K), sharpening set to -2 contrast down -1, but then use the shadow tone curve down -1 or -2, then it is a simple edit in post adding back a little punch. A real easy way to get great looking footage OOC.
You should! pick up the 40-150mm f2.8 pro too so you will realize real advantage in size difference in the overall system, not just camera bodies. Also the 3 f1.2 Pro primes, the 17mm, 25mm,and 45mm are all the same size, share the same filter size and are all pretty darn compact too! xD
I started out with the original EM5 back in 2013. Then moved to the Pen F and now waiting to see what the new EM5 will be. I will probably go that way but the EM1mk2 is tempting.
This is almost perfect vloging camera. Good IBIS, 4k, phase detect AF. But 24mm with electronic stabilization is to narrow and it got 29minutes record limit + slashes video files into 4GB parts (unless it doesn't any more).
Man this is hands down the best review I've seen of this camera. I had looked for picture profiles comparison everywhere! Plus you're almost as funny as Kasey from Camera conspiracies 👌
this camera makes much more sense than their flagship, the flip screen is not the only reason to consider it. can't wait for the newest oly pen myself... still, very happy with my fuji X-T3!!
Nice overview. I have used Panasonic bodies in the past with a combo of Pana/Oly lenses which worked well, except for the DFD AF system. The Olympus phase detection hybrid system looks better from your tests. I also like the colours coming from the Natural and Flat profiles you used. I hope that in the future iteration of this camera they include 4K 60p 4:2:2 10 bit straight out of camera, 14 bit RAW for photo, a built-in electronic variable ND filter for photo & video and improved sensor performance. In a way it's a shame the Olympus EM1-X is not a full frame camera at that price point that was part of the L-Mount Alliance with panasonic, Leica & Sigma; that would have been epic!
@@LeoSavantt you are totally righ! it seems that usually the codec only uses 80mbits, so bitrate wise is not as good as other cameras 100mbit. I do not know if it is solved in this fw.

@@connormccaskill I've not invested too heavily in glass yet. I'd love to pick up some of the Pro lenses from Olympus, but for now I'm getting by with the M.Zuiko 14-42mm and 40-150mm, and a Sigma 30mm 1.4 prime. I find for portraits and some occasional event work that gives me good coverage.
Thanks for this video it's really great. I am not sure if you check comments but do the files (that split every 4GB or so) sync up seamlessly in editing? On some cameras, there's a slight audio glitch, and wondered if this was the case with the Olympus with the 3.0 firmware (or higher) Thanks! :)
I use it all the time for weddings and have yet to run into any issues. I do sync everything in pluraleyes though. and that corrects for any audio drift issues. but no sync issues yet. Hope this helps.

@@connormccaskill The latest firmware is one of the many reasons to keep this baby. It's true what you said. The firmware turns the EM1M2 into a brand new camera.
That's a really good update, but at $1500ish, it's still such a tough sell. I bought a second A6400 and a gimbal for less than that, and I think that's the killer. I think this will definitely improve the EM1 mk II's value in the used market and for existing owners, but I don't know that it's enough to justify buying one new over everything else that exists at this price point or below.
I think the overall difference is the actual build quality of the camera.. Olympus is known for its weather sealing and extremely tough build quality.. the ergonomics and control layout are also better (at least in my opinion..). Maybe just pick one up for a few minutes, or even better rent one for a day or two... granted if you are using a gimbal the control layout might not even matter, but the stabilization is so good, you really don't need a gimbal. :)
Whoop whoop another Olympian!! I have had my em1 mark ii for about 1 and a half years; definitely underrated coming from update 2.0 all the way to 3.0 is basically a new beast of a camera!! Pair it with the 12-100mm f4 pro the ibis is rock solid! Or with the 60mm f2.8 macro handled macro is totally possible!! Sidenote we share the same gear em1 mark ii and z6, is it lens swap time?! 👌🏼🔥
I’m surprised I never saw this! I had the em1 mii but recently upgraded to em 1x. I am lovingggggg my em 1x, but I do mostly photos. I wish I did more video, but I don’t. I wish I saw more people out shooting with Olympus!
It's funny cause, like Panasonic and Sony, Olympus helped start the mirrorless movement. Their technology, I think, is way more advanced than many know and in ways better than their competitors. E.G High-resolution image stitching, AF, IBIS. It's just tough cause their camera division is much smaller compared to what they really concentrate on: Medical Imaging. And their medical imaging division is immense, and a lot of that tech trickles into their Mirrorless cameras. They're incredibly underrated, but that's sorta on the part of Olympus. Kudos for pushing this forward Dave, I'd love to see more of the Olympus stuff pushed outward. And this is coming from a guy who uses Sony and Canon.
I'm glad Olympus improved the autofocus in video, but they still need to do more to make the E-M1 II a better video camera via firmware. 1) 120 fps. If they can do it on the E-M5 Mark III, they can do it on the E-M1 Mark II because those cameras share the same processor. 2) Sharper 1080p and UHD video. Even the 120p sample from the E-M1X looked pretty rough. 3) Consistently high data rate. 237 mbps should mean 237 mbps all the time, or at least close to that. 4) More accurate and consistent auto white balance. 5) Remove the green cast (see the MirrorLessons video comparing it to the G9). 6) Zebras. Ideally waveforms and vectorscopes too, but zebras would be an important start. 7) Shutter angle. The E-M1 III needs a much better audio pre-amp like the E-M1X has, and it needs to record 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 internally as well as 4K 60p. It should be at least as good at video as the GH5 and probably better because the GH6 is not far off.
Olympus is definitely a forgotten gem at this point. However, I think we're in a tricky time right now with newer generation cameras expected to show up in a few months and people waiting for the latest and greatest. Naturally, once they do release too, the used market will be more saturated as well. At least, one would hope.
@@connormccaskill that awkward moment when someone asks you what you shoot video on. PENTAX K-70. I'm waiting for A7sIII to release or if other manufacturers step up too I'm open! I'm still sticking with my Pentax to grow as a filmmaker. I want to handicap myself and still produce good film to see my limitations and how to overcome it. Chances are I'll still be filming with this even after I get a new camera later time to time.
Panasonic should have put phase-detect autofocus in the G9. I know they say phase-detect pixels can create artifacts in video, but the G9 was supposed to be a stills camera first. But so we're left with a camera whose video quality and features are not nearly as good as Panasonic's, but they have better autofocus. Why do I have to choose one or the other?
Looks great...but what lenses are you using for video? I'm using Fuji at the moment so it would be a complete switch. Inquiring minds want to know! ;-)
Honestly the lens I was using in this video is perfect for me! The Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8. If you are a vlogger and need a wide angle lens for self shooting, the Panasonic 7-14 is a cheap option to get second hand. I would highly recommend a prime of some sort. I love the Panasonic Leica 15mm f1.7 and recommend that lens but to save some money a 25mm would be a good option too. Lmk if you have any questions on twitter or instagram: @davemaze_
Awesome! Olympus doesn't get as much love as it should. The only issue I have with the EM1 Mark 2 bit rate is that it rarely hits that 237 mark. It does beat Sony, for example, it some scenes but I have yet to see anyone hit it. That's not a con. I'd rather have that option as a possibility. But I was it was a constant bit rate :(
Totally agree. I have played with the 8bit 4:2:2 4K out of the hdmi and it’s ok but doesn’t seem to be much better than internal too. Wish it had 10 bit....
I don’t do a lot of video with my Olympus but it seems to me with the new firmware that the 4K actually uses a higher bit rate most of the time then It did previously.
Cool video! It's nice to see something in M4/3 has great AF for solo video makers. With the phase detect sensor, I guess it just took them some time to get the software side right. I'm fine with my M50s, but that sensor stabilization is really appealing.
Hi, great review, I see this camera is like the Lumix 85 but with better Autofocus and battery life. Does it have Time Lapse? I do use Time Lapse a lot on the G85.
Very interesting video. I am torn between EM-1 Mark II and EM-5 Mark III. I have used EM-10 Mark II for 3 years and its a great camera and I love it, but it doesn't have a fully articulating screen and the AF, especially the face detect is not good at all. So...What say you? Thank you very much for your time and effort.
I love the camera for video but have a question I am looking for some help with. I am using an ATOMOS Ninja Flame to record the HDMI output from my EM1-Mkii. All the recording is done on the ATOMOS which means I do not push RECORD on the camera. I set the camera to video ( so I can get a feed without the overlay). The HDMI output is the video specification I selected in the video settings i.e Ck4 or FHD 50p etc. This is recognised by the ATOMOS. Audio is output in the HDMI feed. I either use M or P as the camera mode. Whilst everything has worked well I am still a bit confused as to the effect of shutter speed. It seems that as I am not recording with the camera internal process then setting a shutter speed is irrelevant ( except for exposure). I was using the rule of thumb of doubling the frame rate as the shutter speed i.e CK4 24fps means a shutter speed of 1/48 and 50p means a shutter speed of 1/100. However i can't see how this makes any difference as the shutter is not in operation. I think the ATOMOS is just taking the HDMI feed say at 50p and using that frame rate to record with. So shutter speed is irrelevant for this purpose and I can control exposure with ISO and Aperture Am I right?
nice idea!got my OM-D EM 5mkii today!I hated filming with Nikons flat profile on my D750 and I have had the D800 which was nice but also mediocre video capabilities compared to the 5mkii!I hope they will announce the 5mkiii this year since its their 100th anniversary next month!!!!!
Just purchased an EM1 Mii. Was going to a photography workshop with the intention of using the G9. Misplaced the G9 and found anEm1 Mii with two batteries and a charger for $400. Great price. Now to set it up. Found the G9 in time for the workshop. 1st world dilemma. The G9 And EM1 Mii are well matched. The biggest difference is the autofocus. The G9 with DFD does well for photography but is unreliable for video. It seems with FW 3.0 Olympus solved this problem for video. Do I keep both bodies or sell one? Thank you so much for this. I'm upgrading my G7 and I'll definitely be grabbing this over the gh5 (was also considering the g85). Headphone jack, ibis, and good auto focus without having to change camera systems is a relief.
Awesome awesome video! Love my Olympus EM-1.2 and I'm glad you're showing what it can do!
Awesome! Thanks for the love!
So happy to see someone that is thinking Olympus is also good for a video!
I love it!
One of the best firmware update ever !! Basically a new camera, that's crazy !
I know right! Amazing
That’s awesome!! Eos R is a GREAT camera too honestly! Great choice!
Man the AF is pretty sweet! That's quite amazing Dave - I'm Amazed! 👍😊
Haha! Thank you! It's DMazing!!! ;)
I started off with Olympus over 20 years ago and i'm still with them. I have the Em1 Mk 2 now and 40-150mm pro lens and Olympus 100-400mm lens. I also have Olympus EM10 Mk3 and still use.
I love this! I've had the em1mkii for awhile now and really noticed that no-one seemed to use it. Can't wait to see what you do with it 👌👌
Thanks!! Loving it 🙌
Nice move Dave! I’ve done the same thing. The E-M1 MKII is my favorite camera for video since FW 3.0.
It’s so solid! What lenses do you use?
Kinotika - Hosted By Dave Maze 12-100 pro, 12/2 and 17/1.8. It’s a combo that allows me to go small when I want to document my daily dad-life and the 12-100 is boss for video. I am considering a 17/1.2 Pro. If you want a fun and super bright lens with vintage loom, the Speedmaster 25/0.95 is solid.
Great tip!! Ya I really want one of those f1.2 pro lenses! I hear they are making a 10mm f1.4 pro lens soon!
@@connormccaskill Oh I'll have to get that lens then. Dope!
Great video dude! Really amazing how good the autofocus is now. I'm quite impressed.
Just got one second hand and this is a great resource for stepping up into the 4K and the video AF set up.
Awesome! I still love olympus!!! Shoot on EM1 mkiii still!
I really have loved using this camera and can’t wait to put the Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7 on it! 😬
That lens is rad but strangely balanced on the body plus you loose functionality of the aperture ring.
Have you been using a gimbal? If so which one and what are your thoughts on gimbals with this camera?
Seeking Nature ya I have used it on the ronin SC and it works great when you turn the ibis off
3:38 dude!! Smooth moves! Haha amazing! Very cool review. Also the autofocus looks great. I mean, 12-bit raw is cool and all but sometimes you just want to record something right away. I like that the autofocus follows you and it also has smooth transitions. Thanks for the review.
Been eyeing up its bigger brother for a whilst not, will have to do some research into this guy. Nice video Dave!
Ya this is a much cheaper option!!
Thanks for the review! It’s so helpful! I’m bout to get this on ebay and I’m just so excited!
olympus just casually turns on phase detect in video, ballers tbh
I know right! I'm getting the 10-25mm f1.7 this week...will definitely do some tests with that lens soon!
@@connormccaskill hope it goes well, the 12-100mm and 12-40mm have my eye, along with the sigma 16mm, which should be excellent with phase detect (I hope!) better than the G9 with the sigma, no doubt :D olympus need more people like you!
@@kalisti2323 I hope panasonic change into phase detection like Olympus instead use dfd, though..
@@Durio_zibethinus unlikely, but DFD done right like on the G9 is seemingly very close to phase detect+contrast, as long as you stick to panasonic glass!
@@kalisti2323 yes, at G9 level it is great, even though has to be noted down the wobbly effect still occurs in video (even in S1 series). Mostly I don't shoot video, but still, their lower budget lineup had a rough fight with another brand in a same price point. Canon dual pixel, sony and their afc, even fuji comes to eye tracking party (and can be reliable).
That's crazy that a firmware update on an older camera can produce such great results.
I do miss my Olympus Em1.2
I sold all of my Olympus Kit after 4 years to jump into the Full Frame Hype
But I miss all the futuristic features of the EM1.2
So I will probably pick a used one up just to have it (Still wish it did 120P though)
thanks for the review Dave
Regards, Rick
So now Olympus released an E-M5 Mark III and E-M1 Mark III that both have 120 fps, so you have other options. And we know damn well that the E-M1 II is capable of 120 fps because it has the same processor as the E-M5 Mark III, if only Olympus would release a firmware update that included this.
Great video. Very Informative and upbeat. 😀
@@connormccaskill Thanks Dave
Wow. Interesting. I’ve never seen anyone point out how good the Olympus is.
That's because it never was good until now honestly!!!
Garbage bag window Prius FTW!
LOL!!! It's actually a thing that blocks the sun for my son. Like a window tint :)
@@connormccaskill Thing! :) I myself use similar frame curtains on clips: esco-pro.ru/ They do not fly even at a speed of more than 100 km\h and rubbish from the street does not fly into the cabin.
Pretty sweet thanks for sharing and showing this off as always
Great review! I noticed the autofocus has improved a lot since firmware 3. I've stopped manually focusing for my vids and now just use face detect. Autofocus for action photography is so good now it's like getting all new lenses too.
Great video, for a little advice on the film mode, try shooting muted in 4K (nor Cinema 4K), sharpening set to -2 contrast down -1, but then use the shadow tone curve down -1 or -2, then it is a simple edit in post adding back a little punch. A real easy way to get great looking footage OOC.
Really great video! Impressive camera!
Thanks Phil!
Although I’m a Sony user I’ve considered the mark II a few times for some of its features and small size.
They are so cheap you can pick one up used for like $1000! Would you consider getting one as a secondary camera to your sony?
You should! pick up the 40-150mm f2.8 pro too so you will realize real advantage in size difference in the overall system, not just camera bodies.
This is so sick. Now you're gonna make all the used body prices go up
Man this is hands down the best review I've seen of this camera.
XT3 is a GREAT cam
As of 2022 it's under 500 GDP in tne UK secondhand. Now the EM1iii has been out and the OM1 is released.
Seems like a no brainer.
Ya totally!!!
It isn't 237 megabytes per second(MBps), it is 237 megabits per second(Mbps)
And the rate is a variable one.
Thank you for reminding me. My bad!
@@LeoSavantt you are totally righ! it seems that usually the codec only uses 80mbits, so bitrate wise is not as good as other cameras 100mbit. I do not know if it is solved in this fw.
It is also a variable bitrate. I heard that the actual average is 72mbps.
I have one and I was shooting portraits today with it and a 5d classic and 5d mkiii. All great cameras in there own way, but I ended up taking more shots with the EM1 mkii.
That’s awesome! What lenses do you like with the em1?
That’s awesome! What lenses do you like with the em1?
@@connormccaskill I've not invested too heavily in glass yet. I'd love to pick up some of the Pro lenses from Olympus, but for now I'm getting by with the M.Zuiko 14-42mm and 40-150mm, and a Sigma 30mm 1.4 prime. I find for portraits and some occasional event work that gives me good coverage.
Olympus' IBIS is the reason I switched from film and it was damn good back then already :)
Nice Video. I viewed it a few times the last years, but I'm always impressed. Owning a Olympus OM-D EM-1 MKII I still searching the mentioned (as overlay text) setting to change the AF speed in Videos. Where do I find this setting?
Thank you Dave, this video indeed offers a lot of courage to an EM1MKII video shooters, great job!

Hey, this is awesome, Dave. Hope to see more of your vlogs on the EM1M2. I've been filming weddings and events on my EM1M2 with the M.Zuiko 25 f1.2 lens for the past 2 years. Love the pair. Amazing hybrid camera. I just bought the Sigma 16mm f1.4 today. Hope it will boost the production value!
Amazing! Have you updated the firmware? I’m sure you’re loving the advancements
@@connormccaskill The latest firmware is one of the many reasons to keep this baby. It's true what you said. The firmware turns the EM1M2 into a brand new camera.
I need this and the "slightly cropped less warpy" IBIS mode on my GH5!
Then get an em1 mkii!! Haha. They really are great secondary cameras to a gh5. Only $1,000 used
I can't understand why this camera is being ignored as an awesome UA-cam camera, or just a great cam period!!!
it's not in the "popular" crowd.. lol! Olympus has always been an underdog though.. they really do kick ass!
I know! That’s what I thought too! I hope this video helps change that and others I make in the future
Kinotika - Hosted By Dave Maze I have almost pushed the button on Amazon!!! Help! I have too many cameras!
I got one used for $1,000! But the a6400 definitely does stuff this can’t. I personally wanted ibis and love the MFT system
Would you still recommend this now in 2020?
Yes totally! However, I personally use the EM1mkiii now.

Sony didn't help start the mirrorless movement.
Freeda Bees someone’s ready to fact check and go into the whole history, so I’m gonna let you say your thoughts before I follow up with mine
It's a great camera, and the update was awesome for video shooters.
love mine and quite happy to have NO VIDEO
color science on video looks reallllyyy good straight out of camera
Olympus is definitely a forgotten gem at this point. However, I think we're in a tricky time right now with newer generation cameras expected to show up in a few months and people waiting for the latest and greatest. Naturally, once they do release too, the used market will be more saturated as well. At least, one would hope.
Absolutely! For now... the $1,000 used em1mkii is a great deal! What do you shoot on or want to?
Why do I have to choose one or the other?
congrats... i just switched to EMI MKIII :P
M50 is still great!! Consider the em1 mkii whenever you’re ready for an upgrade b
Wow I love the color so much! Get your shit together Panasonic!!

Deity D3 Pro!
how did you set the volume settings to deal with the infamous olympus preamps?
Very interesting video. I am torn between EM-1 Mark II and EM-5 Mark III. I have used EM-10 Mark II for 3 years and its a great camera and I love it, but it doesn't have a fully articulating screen and the AF, especially the face detect is not good at all. So...What say you?
Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Check at M1 MII click OK -- > Super Control Panel ---> Check C4K ---> click INFO and will find 120fps and control everything about speed
Interesting.....
Hi, I've got a question Zach: Is not annoying your workflow with the files split that creates this camera every 4GB?
So shutter speed is irrelevant for this purpose and I can control exposure with ISO and Aperture
Am I right?
hey Dave, how is the 1080p on this camera? On previous Olympus' it was terrible.
how is it with viltrox and 18-35 1.8 combo????
nice idea!got my OM-D EM 5mkii today!I hated filming with Nikons flat profile on my D750 and I have had the D800 which was nice but also mediocre video capabilities compared to the 5mkii!I hope they will announce the 5mkiii this year since its their 100th anniversary next month!!!!!
Will have to use the Olympus for a while. I do appreciate the saturation of the Olympus colors.

True C-LOG or something trying to mimic it?
@@ChristopherGoetting I guess something that mimics it. The 80D does not come with LOG. It's not imperative for me, just think it ads a level of creativity again.

Great video! Could you do a video where you compare video quality between the E-M1II and the Z6?
If they do things right, the next E-M5 will be the ultimate vlogging camera if they add phase detection. But they will probably figure a way to cripple it.
