93 kms from that Whakatane gas station is the Bethlehem Shopping Centre(Center),which is the home of Patrick’s Pies, the bakery with all the awards for creating these meaty taste treats.
Okay you've tried the service station pie, time to try the home bakery ones. Traditional pies mince/cheese, steak/cheese, mince/veg, steak/veg, steak/mushroom, steak and mice. Find some bakery pies, you'll get the same selection as well as gourmet pies. Better still give it a go at making your own. You can buy the appropriate pastry if you're not keen to make it yourself. The filling is up to you, meats through to vegetarian. Chicken/corn/bacon in a white sauce, Steak/kidney, Butter chicken, combo of veges with herbs, Lamb/mint, fruit - apple, apricot, gooseberry, rhubarb, black-current; to name a few. The majority of fillings are boiled in salted water, with herbs, pepper if you like, red /white wine, dark beer (Great with steak) When ingredients is ready, just thicken the mix and there you have your filling, easy peasy. Keep pastry cool and don't over work. Use a flat bottom pastry don't over dob it or else you'll weaken the wall and base including edges - a few mil thick. Top is your flakey, a couple of mil thick. Always bake off in a hot oven a hot oven. Try it, you'll love it. Bon Appetit. All the best Stephanie.
@@NZdiagnostics Yeah soooo good! After doing far too much internet sleuthing about pies, I found that The Baker's Son and Dad's Pies have the same address. Both supplying pies to BP. The best part, they have a cafè in Silverdale! Too bad i'm in Palmy, but, will be a good road trip.
Thanks for coming to Whakatane. BP has been shut for over a week due to an incident. The best pies I’ve had are from Papamoa East called Rise Artisan Bakery. It is opposite Karewa Parade along Papamoa Beach Road. There is a cinema there also. Google maps is very old.
Now I'm bluddy hungry. When I was growing up, Monday was pie day at school ( no bread left after the weekend). We'd peel the top off the pie, eat the filling with potatoes chips (crisps?). Then fill the pie up with chips, put the top back and eat... Yum. It was a 2 course meal!
Steak n Cheese is #1, The NZ meat pies are delicious and also colloquially a great form of plastic surgery alternative... 3 meat pies a day and you will go up 3 cup sizes! And 8 dress sizes.
Could someone please recommend Morgan a good local Bakery for real pies. No-one from New Zealand would go to America and get a pre-packaged burger from a petrol / gas station, to determine if American can make a burger. Petrol station pies are so very average at best (At least Morgan didn't judge us by comparing the supermarket pre-packaged pies - several other Americans have done lately) As mentioned by others - at least start with the basics - A home bakery (for often same price as petrol station) Cheese/mince, steak/mushroom, Chicken or even a butter chicken pie. Then if you handle it, on a road trip (as these are much rarer to find) if you have an opportunity - try paua pies, venison pies, lamb shank, manuka smoked meat/fish, Oyster pie or in season - whitebait fritter - which leads us to Equally, if you ever do a fish and chips. Please go to some where that gets fresh fish daily and include snapper. Then choose from if available from the cheap Lemon/Trevally/Tarakihi to the rarer or expensive Kingfish/Orange Roughy/John Dory (Finally the pinnacle if you are ever offered (illegal to sell) - to the only can eat if you catch it - Rainbow Trout)

Renwick mince pies in Blenheim are the best but before I moved to Blenheim I live in Roxburgh central Otago there jimmy mince pies were yummy too it's hard to to say which one was tastier
I swear those gas stations look like they in whakatane cause I live in ohope, and the best pies imo frm gas station is the z station mince and cheese. Pls try bakery pies too cause they on a different level
NZ pies have perfect crusts. Theyre soft flakey and light, but also very sturdy and will not fall apart in your hand. Its not hard to make a good filling, thats easy, but trying to recreate the pastry is impossible, HOW DO THEY DO IT?
I like how Gull is in the background, and it’s not one of the competing Petrol Stations. Also judging pies on mince in cheese is like judging bread on white sandwich loaf.
Awesome thanks for the pie reviews The petrol station pies used to be substandard but now they have upped their game Maybe you can try the bakery ones later

Morgan - watching you take LARGE…bites, made me cringe each time. Why? Because one of these days, you will do that and understand why Kiwi’s always say “Blow on the Pie”. Yep, NZ babies first words are..”GooOOO gah Goo gahhGoo” which as Scholars have now found to mean “blow on pie..blow on pie” Yep, you will pick that yummy looking unassuming pie..sitting there on the tray, take it outside and hop into the car. Being hungry, you’ll look down at it - it’s beckoning to you, all innocent with it’s flakey pastry and that lovely pie aroma - wafting away like a warm home made meal….and then you’ll take a bite as per this vlog…. As your teeth bite down, and the soft expanse of loving pie flakiness touches your lips - and your mouth reaches the nice meaty-cheesy goodness and your eyes start to glaze over with joy - Your brain will go into shock, as something mirroring the temperature of the Sun, sears your gums, lips and tongue all at once. Your entire mouth will feel like it just melted as you try and spit out filling that feels like 2000 degrees of doom…..that right there Morgan, is when these words will flit through your still shell shocked brain… “Always blow on the Pie…” But, never fear, most Hospitals in NZ have a “Pie Burn Ward”. You’ll be back on solids in a month….
Gas station pies are not rated very highly in NZ, if you want the true meat pie experience try steak pies at bakeries, pastry is about the same quality but you get twice the filling with big chunks of meat. Most New Zealanders only get gas station pies if they're drunk or desperate 😂
The petrol stations have the worst pies and they are over priced and they are not fresh. You should be buying pies from the Asian bakery they make the pies on the day and its fresh

BP's angus steak and cheese pies are the best. Especially for a tradie that doesn't want messy flaky pastry in their truck.
Pretty sure these are made by Dad's pies in case you want to try them in other places. You can also buy them at the supermarket now as well.
