The lamingtons came about from sponge cakes at the end of the day being cut into blocks dipped in food flavouring (chocolate or raspberry) and coated in coconut. Now it is it's own thing. usually cut into with cream in middle.

    1. Krispie Biscuits - a toasted coconut biscuit made by Griffin's Foods of New Zealand. 8/10
    2. ANZAC Biscuits - The original biscuits were made from a spartan blend of flour, sugar, salt and milk powder. They were hard and often eaten by the troops as a substitute for bread, or crumbled up by pounding wholemeal biscuits into meal for making porridge. 7.5/10
    3. Afghan Biscuits - Afghan biscuits are crispy oval-shaped and was eventually renamed "Milk Chocolate Roughs" by Griffin's, which advertised the renaming with a new slogan: "Same Bikkie. New name." However, the name "Afghan" is still the one used, and "rough" is not used by any other company. 8/10
    4. Lamington's - MUCH Better with whipped cream filled centers and a dollup of raspberry jam on top, The Lamington, Australia's famed dessert, was actually invented in New Zealand and originally named a “Wellington”, according to new research published by the University of Auckland. 9.5/10
    5. Lolly Cake slice - Never had one. A cake or confectionery that features "lollies" as a key ingredient. The exact origins of this cake are unknown. Lolly cakes are known to have been consumed in the 1940s, but were not commonly available until the 1960s in supermarkets. ??/10
    6. Mock (Fake) Cream Doughnut - Mock cream is a substitute for fresh cream. Best used as a filling for fluffy sponge cakes or traditional tarts, or as a coating over cakes that need to be made in advance. I Prefer Fresh Cream. 9/10
    7. Brandy Snaps - Need to let the cream infuse and soften the Brandy snap a little before eating. The name brandy snap has no reference to the alcoholic drink. In 1825 John Trotter Brockett suggested that the name comes from ''branded'' as in burned. 7.5/10
    8. Pavlova - Interesting topping skills. A bit too sweet for me but plenty of whipped cream and fresh fruit helps. Originating in either Australia or New Zealand in the early 20th century, it was named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. In its relaunched online edition, the dictionary says the first recorded Pavlova recipe appeared in New Zealand in 1927. This was in a book called Davis Dainty Dishes, published by the Davis Gelatine company, and it was a multi-coloured jelly dish.Pavlovas and meringues are both made of whipped egg white, but a Pavlova has a delicate crispy exterior with pillowy soft marshmallow inside, while meringue is dry and crisp all the way through. 6/10
    9. Jelly Tip - Childhood favourite, It takes the three elements of the classic Jelly Tip (raspberry jelly, vanilla ice-cream and chocolate) to new heights of sophistication.9/10
    10. Hokey Pokey (Honeycomb) Ice Cream - Hokey Pokey ice cream is one of the most popular ice creams in New Zealand, perhaps second only to plain ol' vanilla. It's a quintessentially Kiwi treat where rich creamy vanilla ice cream is mixed with crunchy bits of honeycomb toffee (i.e. hokey pokey) 7/10
Girl Guide Biscuts - New Zealand is one of 150 member countries of the World Association of GirlGuiding and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). Every member of GirlGuiding New Zealand automatically joins the WAGGGS community of over 10 million girls and women around the world. For over 60 years, Griffin's has been baking our crowd-favourite biscuits. Dan Gilbert, Griffin's Managing Director, says “Griffin's has been partnering with GirlGuiding NZ for more than 60 years and we're delighted to help keep this iconic tradition alive”. 8.5/10
Custard Squares - A personal favourite. also known as 'custard slice', it's similar-ish in essence to a French dessert known as mille-feuille. The traditional vanilla slice recipe consists of a layer of set custard sandwiched between two layers of crispy puff pastry. Bakeries will often serve theirs with a layer of icing on top for extra sweetness 8/10
Another topic that maybe of interest - Things Australia Has Stolen From New Zealand And Claimed As Their Own, has been an ongoing debate for years.

Well done on trying the cakes and biscuits etc. However the items you bought are considered the budget type pre-packed, longer-life supermarket brands. THE best donuts, biscuits and cakes are those made fresh by the local bakery, Mom or Grandmother ( the unofficial Guru's of baking) . Depending on where you live there will be an outlet that makes the best local donuts etc. Brandy snaps are not made to be eaten alone; they should be filled with fresh whipped cream and allowed to rest for about 1 hour, softening the snap. You should perhaps try NZ pies! Again avoid the pre-packed types found in the gas-station warmer, or re-heatable frozen ones from the supermarket. Buy fresh from the bakery; if you ever find yourself in Fairlie in the South Island, they have a famous pie shop that make THE best pie's I have ever eaten; people make a detour while travelling just to get one and eat it in-store.

I was taught that "mock cream" wasn't real fresh cream but full of ingredients to make it last for several days, the "mock" part meaning it was not real cream. In both New Zealand and Australia they have strict laws regarding ANZAC Biscuits, under law that aren't cookies, they have to be called biscuits and cannot be anything else. In Australia the term Anzac is protected under Australian law and cannot be used without permission from the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, in New Zealand the Governor General has similar powers in the naming conventions as Australia. Basically the ingredients have to be unchanged from the original, the name is protected legally and legally cannot be sold as cookies, only as biscuits.

All of those things are so much better home made. Doughnuts and lamingtons should have fresh cream not mock cream. The lolly cake is made with crushed malt biscuits . I’d say a lot of them are old school types of sweet treats. Can’t beat a good home made Pavlova!

Mock cream is not real cream. I hope one day you can try home made lolly cake, pavlova and lamingtons. Lamingtons need to be fresh, eaten on the day, the one you had gosh knows how long it's been sitting in that packet. Also lamingtons with cream in the middle even nicer. Lolly cake is made with condensed milk, malt biscuits, butter and I use chopped up Pascall Eskimos lollies. If you have home made Pavlova the outer layer will be crunchy and marshmallow in the centre. Even homemade afghan biscuits are a lot tastier than supermarket varieties.

Wow, very good research. Hit it on the head. Mmm krispies, simple but tasty. Every kid loves a jelly tip. Afghans, yep, awesome. Lolly cake, old school, not often found now as much as it was years ago. Yeah, donut, mmm. A real fav. That cardboard rolled thing is frankly crap. Can’t understand why people buy them. Pav, who doesn’t like a pav?. Messy to eat but so good. Hokey Pokey a fav.😊

Halve those lamingtons and put whipped cream on them. Changes them totally!
Brandy snaps you cream and leave an hour maybe before eating them.
If you thought that Pav was nice , that’s just a supermarket version. Find a recipe and make one and then, that’s a real Pav!
Krispie biscuits make a great key lime pie base…

    Hey,
    Lots of good advice already.
My recommendation would be to connect with a "Country Women's Institute" if they still exist.
Their functions will provide you with the classics. The brandy-snaps would have been made the night before and softened a bit; the lamingtons would have had cream; there is so much more that would have been different.

When I first started school in NZ in 1966 I would buy my lunch for 20c [ 2 shillings then } from a man in a white bakers coat who had a tray on which you put your order written on a wee envelope with the money inside .
Most times it would be a meat pie and always paired with a saucer sized fresh baked afghan biscut !

My nans very own Maori style homemade hokey pokey ice creme tops them all, way better than those pricy factory sugar bombs you get at the shops but I'm glad it got a mention none the less, every Xmas summer holidays she would make a few tubs to get us through those hot summery days yum and refreshing and hardly denting the wallet cost effective...lol her only secret ingredient was that her golden syrup amongst other things was also home made don't even ask...hehe, enjoyed your take on everything sugary, moderation is key find something you like and treat yourself now and again it's the kiwi way.😉
