    The All Blacks get their name from a misprint in a newspaper almost a century ago and also, obviously from the fact that they have always worn a black uniform. The misprint was in a British newspaper where the text was supposed to be that they had played like "all backs"-basically lots of running like backs are supposed to do-but what was actually printed was "all blacks" and the name stuck.

    Ball at bottom of goal posts is generally a lot harder.
    You can also score points by kicking the ball through the posts above the horizontal, you can do this anytime and it’s called a drop goal.
    A conversion, a kick over the posts due to a try is worth 2 points.
    A drop goal is where you kick the ball right after it’s been dropped on the ground for that purpose.

    The goal posts take up some of the goal due to their placement. So placing the ball on the ground against the post outside the goal area is considered a try, it don’t happen often.
    The goal posts are for the conversion kicks, done after a try or penalty kicks.
    You can also do the drop kick over these posts for points also.

    when they are tackled and go to ground, they have to release the ball, hopefully back on our side, to keep the game moving, they all have their own positions, the guys in that wrestling match are the forwards usually the taller or heavier guys and that wrestling thing is how they restart the play after a fumble, which we usually call a knock on...the lineout is also to restart play after the ball goes out over the sideline. . .when the cross for a try (which is 5 points) they try to touch down as close to the post as they can to make the following conversion kick, easier so they get an extra bonus of 2 points. . .touch to the goal post because the post are in the way crossing the line for a try, you cant physically put your hand through the solid steel post 😅so just touching it is all good

    Offside: (the simplest explanation) When the movement breaks down with a "tackle", and goes to ground in a "ruck", the defending players must remain behind the last of their teammates feet in the ruck. Going around the tangle of bodies to take the ball is a no-no (though forcing your way directly through the middle is allowed, and is why the rucks are so vigorously defended).

    In general the forwards numbers 1-8 do the heavy grafting in the scrums, mauls, rucks and lineouts. Numbers 9 and 10 are link players and playmakers. 12 and 13 (centres) are quick and strong in defence and attack. Numbers 11 and 14 are the wings and they are usually the greyhounds; the real speed boys. Number 15 is the full back; the last line of defence but fast and ready to join the attackers as an extra threat.
    Any numbers over 15 you might see have come off the bench as tactical or sometimes injury replacements for the starting fifteen line-up.

    Interesting take on what a national team means. Makes me think it's different for America as their "world series" is played amongst themselves, whereas for the rest of the world a world series or world cup is actually a tournament amongst the best teams representing their countries in the world competing against each other. That's the only reason I can think why someone would ask if a national team is the only team to represent their country, as no other country plays touchdown rugby for example a national team is a bit of a foreign concept to americans it seems. Interesting to see America have their own rugby league now, this will be interesting to see how it grows the game in America.

    When the Forwards, numbered 1-8 pack down against another team after a stoppage, it’s called a Scrum.
    When the player has fallen to the ground with the ball and it’s being contested, it’s called a Ruck.

    Anybody can wear a 'scrum cap' but it is usually the big guys; the forwards (1-8). The "sweatbands" are a combination of bandage and tape that reduce damage to the ears, scrum caps also give some protection to the ears and scalp.

    In both forms of rugby (union & league) you only score if you physically press the ball down beyond the try line, if it leaves your hand, better luck next time!
    You cannot be in front of the ball if your team has possession of it. So if you are in front of your team mate that is carrying, throwing, or kicking the ball you are "off side" so you can't legally play until you get yourself back on side by falling back behind that person.
    You can only propel the ball forward by kicking it, you cannot throw the ball forward.
    There are positions for each player but when your team has the ball it's everyone's job to help keep that ball going forward (legally). If your defending it's again everyone's job to try to stop the ball.
    This was very old footage, in fact some of those players have since past away, all the rest have long since retired.
    These are both professional national representative teams, All Blacks representing NZ and the Wallabies representing Aus.
    Both NZ & Aus have regional teams who's star players make up the representative teams above.
    College football would be high school football and the only people attending those games are families and friends of the players.
    University students that play footy generally play for the local regional team if they can get selected, and if good enough could also be an All Black.
    As for half time entertainment, it's pretty crap, that's when you visit the toilets and get a pie and some chips and beers for the second half.

  • @paulhiakita251
    @paulhiakita251 Рік тому

    Yes the ball can only be passed backwards. They can kick the ball forward to gain ground. When it looked like they were wrestling on the ground after the player with the ball has been tackled its called a mall. The tackled player must release the ball, but the ball must travel backwards. If the ball travels forward from the tackled player or if he drops the ball forward its called a knockon which means there will be a scrum. During the scrum the team that knocks the ball on forfeits the ball to the opposition. The players called the forwards form the scrum. The half back who normally is smaller in stature feeds the ball into the scrum, he might then pass it out to the backs who are usually faster than the forwards. The forwards are normally picked for their strength, heavier in weight but are expected to be mobile as well. You cannot play the ball if your feet are off the ground, that's why it can look messy because the players that are still on their feet are trying to push the opposition off the ball to gain possession of the ball. The backs are expected to have speed, strength and other attributes for the game play. Skilled at kicking, passing the ball accurately while in full flight. There are many other rules and plays to explain but I'm other fans will let you know more about this great game.

Going into this years world cup we are under extreme pressure to do well, injuries and lack of self control can earn yellow (10 minutes off the field or in the sin bin) or red cards (off the field for the whole game). Our female counter parts the Black Ferns are the current world champions, they are awesome.

    Try= 5 Points

    Penalty Kick= 3 extra points
    Drop Goal Kick= (Where a player allows the ball to bounce straight down the ground first before kicking the ball over the goalpost.)
    Yellow Card= 10 Minutes in the sinbin
    Red Card= in the sinbin for the rest of the match. Miss out on 3 other matches, before they are allowed back in.

    Those 'helmets' are just thin pads worn by the forwards who take part in the scrum (the wrestling thing 🙂) in order to protect their ears from possibly ripping.
    When you're tackled and taken down you have to release the ball so that the other team can compete to take it away (turnover). You can defend it by piling up on your side of the ball and creating a ruck to block the other team from taking the ball. If you hold on to it once on the ground it's a foul and the other team gets to kick or throw in for a scrum.

  • @ingsve
    @ingsve Рік тому

    It's not sweatbands. He's taping his ears close to his head so that he doesn't hurt his years when they go into those "pile ups" as you call them which are called scrums, rucks or mauls. Also the only protection they are allowed to have other than mouthguards need to be soft and sown into the garments or the scrumcap (helmet) you saw which is also just soft and mainly protects the years rather than any impacts like an american football helmet.

  • @ianarnett

    This is a country versus a country, so the size of the country is immaterial. For example, USA has one National team, but all countries have club (as we call them ) sides from which the best players are picked to make the national team. Also each country might have one or it might have several stadium where they hold their Test matches (as they are called).
    The name All Blacks goes back to over a hundred years. A reporter sent a report to his newspaper saying they played like “all backs” and it was misinterpreted as “all blacks”, hence the kit colour. Helmet things are called scrum caps, they are worn to help prevent cauliflower ears (look at some ears) or to stop your ears getting ripped off. Blocking is not allowed and although everyone has a position they all play attack and defence, but you’ll need to see a comprehensive video on the laws etc for that to be explained. Correct, American Football derived from rugby. Touchdown, as you say in AF, does require that to score in rugby. Just two halves of forty minutes each. No half time show although it is creeping into the game sadly in my personal opinion, but each to their own I suppose. Now you’ve got a taste why not try to learn a bit more? There are a lot of good comments here which can tell you more as well.

    This is an older game…but rugby is nothing like soccer. Lateral and back are the accepted passes. Chip kicks are used to advance play. Tries (touch downs) must be place into the try zone (end zone) with downward pressure pressure… All Blacks are also referred to as the kiwis. When a player goes down with the ball other players from both sides pile in and contest for both sides. Players numbered 1 to 8 are the Forwards, and the forwards are the guys who contest in the scrum 8 players on 8 players and 9 to 15 are your backs😢
    Countries only have one international team, and like American football, there are college leagues, and club leagues. The goal post base is considered part of the goal line, so if you are tackled near the base of the goal post you can place the ball with downward pressure to the base of the post to score a try…. As a New Zealand Born samoan I’ve played through my school years right into adulthood…something about the heavy contact is appealing.
    You have yet to see some of the newer outstanding All Black games. The All Blacks are the most winning team in the history of sports.
    America has their own league growing as well,( fairly new in comparison)… and had played the All Blacks in Washington DC…ummmm still a huge growing game for the American Eagles.
    I predict rugby growing huge and fast in America, because Americans are loving that it is 2 x 40 minute halves, and the game has a constant flow with no downs or time outs, and the lack of pads , and helmets make collisions entertaining.
    Unfortunately the game is now professional, so though there are no half time entertainment, and a dozens shows breaking down and analysing the finished game…I’m sure that won’t be too far off…
    Great reaction, and you seem to have a good concept of the game for a newbie!
    Keep up the great reactions, thoroughly enjoyable!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😂

    The ball MUST be grounded in the goal area, if it is dropped, no try, if it is passed forward, you lose posession of the ball and a scrum is played.
    All Blacks represent ALL of New Zealand, as the Wallabies represent ALL of Australia.
    Teams are chosen, selected, by the AB coach and his selectors, from all the regional teams.
    Rugby is the main sport of NZ, South Africa, and Wales. most of the world has rugby teams, but NONE have the skills or the win/loss ratio of the AB. Currently, since approx 1900, the ABs have wone slightly over 82% of their games. The most successful sports team in the world.
    The Fern is our national emblem for sports people.
    Aussie has regional teams as well
    Goal posts. A TRY is scored, and then a CONVERSION (Dont ask!!) is made by kicking the ball through the posts, from a point level with where The try was scored.
    To score a Try by using the posts mean the ball can be grounded at the FRONT of the post, BUT touch the post and the ground at the same time.

    Home stadium for the ABs is Eden Park.
    Start playing as kids (5-6) for a local club. Taking it as far as they can or want to. Maybe for their school team (intermediate or college/High school). Finish school. Those who go to Uni, maybe play for their Uni team. Or, if not, then carry on with a club. Going up through the ranks as they improve or whatever.
    City level team (Petone, Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata - for the Wellington region, etc). Then provincial (ITM Cup) teams - Wellington Lions, Tasman Makos, and so on.
    Then Super Rugby. Best teams of NZ, Aussie, and South Africa.
    Then, the best get selected for the national team owned by no one, to play international level.

    A TRY is TOUCHING the BALL DOWN... over the try line... the American TouchDown comes from that root, even though in NFL you do not have to touch the ball down anymore - just run over the line. The side rule in Rugby of: or press the ball against the goal post, is because sometimes when the piles of bodies are bullding up/ scrums and mauls and so on, the goal posts can actually get in the way of touching the ball down... so just press it against it - instead.

    • @michaelheliotis5279
      @michaelheliotis5279 Рік тому +1

      Yeah, if you're in a pile in front of a goalpost, it could be rather awkward or even dangerous if you had to arc your body around in order to touch the ball on the other side of the line, so scoring by touching the ball to the goalpost circumvents that. Also, while the strictness of touching the ball to the ground might perhaps seem like pedantry that would never be relevant in an real game, it's actually not that uncommon for the ball to slip out of people's hands as they get tackled at the last minute as they go over the line, so even though they and the ball are over the line, they don't end up getting the try because they weren't touching the ball when it hit the ground.

    The All Blacks have NZ National emblem the silver fern on their jerseys since1898 and they performed the Haka as they always do before the match starts. Score a try anywhere across the line where the goal posts are situated across the width of the field but then in order to convert the try for more points it then has to be kicked between the goal posts over the top bar and that video did not really show the flow of that as it is just highlights of an international match. The closer the try is made to the goal posts makes it easier for it to be converted or kicked over the goal between the two posts.The silver fern symbol’s association with our national representative sports teams and the armed forces over many years gives it deep emotional resonance for New Zealanders.

American football is very different, with set plays and stuff I don't really understand. Not that rugby is random, intelligent strategies and tactics are drilled into the players by intense training. Rugby is characterised by it's trials of strength, nimble dexterity and single minded dedication of the players and of a religious style ferver and dedication bread into a majority of Kiwis. If New Zealand sufferes defeat at the hand of it's traditional sporting rivals, South Africa/Springbocks: Australia/ Wallibies: British/ Lions, (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales more recently the Pumas from Argentina), a palpable malaise desends upon the Land. The prestigious World Cup final to determine the World Champion is top of the Rugby calendar. Before the pandemic hit, there was talk of a US rugby team being organised to play internationally. Apparently Rugby Football is a growing sport States Side. Achieving World Champion status would take time and that's not the American way of; "rip shit and bust", eh daughter🙂 However good things can take time so there is that I suppose.

      Yeah, college sports aren't really a phenomenon in New Zealand. The rugby pipeline, along with other sports, generally involves going straight from high school into a provincial club or team (ideally one of the professional ones), and from there hoping that you get selected for the national team, possibly after being first selected for the national Under 20s or similar team if the sport has one. I always found it rather odd how the prevelance of college sports in the US, and their position as a gateway into professional sports, often forces people into attending university when they might otherwise have no interest in going. It's kinda unfair to marginalise people from playing a sport professionally just because they wanted to be an electrician or plumber, etc, and not go to college.

    The Haka (a Maori war dance) replaces the national anthem for New Zealand.
    While rugby is played throughout school, and into university, there are organised teams in New Zealand (rugby Union is a strictly amateur sport) it's from the top level teams that the national side is drawn. Most rugby-playing countries operate the same way. What you are seeing is the best players from both countries.
    Australia (the Wallabies) are one of the few teams who can give the All Blacks a game (New Zealand's emblem is a white fern). My beloved Scotland are much further down the list.
    Ear protection is strongly advised. The Scrum Cap (helmet) is rare these days, compared to a simple headband.
    The USA doesn't have a National Football team because they'd have no-one to play, but they have a real football(soccer) team and the American Eagles rugby team.

    Ironically American Football uses the term "Touchdown", but you don't have to actually touch it down to get the points, but in rugby (union or league) you do have to physically touch the ball down, but generally that term is not used. Generally it's "try", (although the term "touchdown" would be understood to mean the same thing).

  • @catzkeet4860
    @catzkeet4860 Рік тому

    OK we don't have "college sports" To us Uni is for learning stuff, not for making money for your institution playing semi professional games. Our pros are members of the international teams. To score a try a player needs to "ground the ball" or be in contact with it when it touches the ground. The reason they'll sometimes not ground the ball when they cross the line is because to "convert" a try, you need to kick over the crossbar of the posts... what angle you kick at is determined by where the ball is grounded. When tackled the ball must be released, they don't "lose it" Ofc there are set positions, but it's hard for a noob to see them in a big game like this, but look at the defence around 10:34. The ABs are working to keep the Wallabies out. That's the defensive line in action.

    You got into the ascetic of the game pretty quickly. Four months later I assume you now know the role of each position in a rugby team and the suitability and role of each player in that position. And every player is both a defender and attacker. But it's what each player's skill or talent, individual brilliance, is that makes the game exciting. Winning then becomes superfluous but it helps😂.

    It is literally - "a touch down" otherwise no try is given. the All Blacks are the Kiwis. Australia are the wallabies. England is the rose. Ireland is the shamrock. Scotland the thistle and Wales the leek of the daffodil. You should watch a Six nations game :). There are 'positions' which are the forwards and the backs. Generally the backs are faster runners and the forwards are the strength.
    In rugby, offside depends upon an imaginary line from touch line to touch line through the middle of the ball. A pass that goes 'forward' is actually playing to an offside player (they are in front of that imaginary line). Likewise, when the ball is kicked ahead, any player on the side of the kicker's team, who is ahead of this line when the ball is kicked, are also offside ... This line is there for line outs and for scrums, mauls and rucks .... :)
    The goal post are used to 'take a try' to kick the ball between the posts and above the cross bar. That is why we call it a try (a touch down) which allows the kicker a try at kicking the ball between the posts.
    Try this one: ua-cam.com/video/_BfAtka_bi4/v-deo.html

    You are watching a years back game, but one of the best. Girl to girl, it's nothing like Grid Iron, there's no throwing (passing) forward, there's no quarters, or changing of team players to defensive etc. each player is defensive and attack. 80 minute game is played in 2 halves but may include penalty time. Full on contact, and yes to a big degree now days quite stupid albeit there are severe rules as to how you can and can't tackle the opposition, penalties are yellow/red cards even as far as a heavy fine if you stuff up, more severe is to being stood down from playing for weeks. From the time the whistle is blown to start to when it is blown at half time/full time the game is played at full pace, more so in the dying last quarter of an hour if teams scoring is close. It is our national winter sport played by both females and males of all ages, from primary school, intermediate, high school, university, regional, local clubs, country farmers, professional. Girls against girls (bar friendly games sometimes) guys against guys. Winter is not too far away, we have already started our regional games, so take some time to catch one live. Learn something of the rules and play, support your local team, it's not everybody's cup of tea, but the vast majority support both our woman and male international teams. League and Touch rugby are along the same lines, both giving thrills and spills. Cheers Stephanie

  • @barrydouglas6276
    @barrydouglas6276 Рік тому

    Let me start by saying that whilst I enjoy watching Rugby I am no expert. Understanding the laws (yes the sport sometimes takes itself too seriously) is hard and I think you picked up remarkably well! So some inconsistencies exist because dangerous tackles have been more precisely described over the years. In a contemporary game you would be expected to attempt to wrap your arms around the ball carrier no higher than their shoulders and (perhaps less vigorously enforced) above the knees whilst at least one foot is on the ground of the player with the ball. Players who do not have the ball should not be tackled or interfered with (especially if they are behind the ball) but significant leeway is given when the commitment to tackle precedes passing the ball.
    Theoretically lifting in a line-out is banned whilst holding a player at the height of their jump has always been allowed. I guess this is a bit like cannabis legislation - a lot of "I didn't see" going around.
    When an infraction is committed if the opposing team have possession of the ball rather than stopping play the ref can allow this "advantage" to play out.
    Scoring is in one instance achieved by placing by hand the ball behind the try line and before the dead ball line (5 points currently). Every try leads to a "goal kick". This allows for a further 2 points (a conversion) if the kicker places the ball between the uprights and above the crossbar. The kick is taken roughly as far from the sidelines as where the ball was grounded so getting near the posts is desired. Any player in possession of the ball may drop it to the ground and again kick between the uprights and above the crossbar for a 3 point drop goal.
    Hope this helps but refs are given very broad discretion so sometimes even the knowledgeable have WTF moments.
