Whether you are a beginner or expert fly fisherman, having the best 5 weight suited to your needs is crucial.
In this video, we’re going to be sharing our list of the best 5 weight fly rods on the market this year.
1. Echo Base
The Echo Base fly rod is a perfect fly rod for the beginner to the intermediate angler.
The medium-fast action will assist the beginner cast to get used to timing the back and forward cast correctly.
It’s a 4 piece rod that is shipped in a cloth-covered rod tube case and a sock.
To keep costs down, and make it more durable, Echo has chosen to fit the rod with a black anodized reel seat.
This also makes for a very good value backup rod.
As with all Echo rods, the rod has a lifetime warranty for the natural life of the original owner.
With all these features, it’s hard to believe that the starting price of this rod in the 5 weight range is only $99.
2. Orvis Clearwater
The Orvis Clearwater is undoubtedly one of the best value fly rods available today.
The Clearwater made our list of the best 4 and 6 weight fly rods as well because it’s such a quality rod for the price, which is under $200.
The 5 weight rendition is just as good as the 4 and 6.
It’s built with trout and bass in mind, so It’s able to deliver dries very delicately and can even chuck big streamers accurately to difficult spots.
It comes with Orvis’ famous 25-year warranty as well.
This rod offers amazing value for the beginner to the intermediate angler.
3. Sage Pulse
Aside from maybe the Sage Foundation, the Sage Pulse is probably Sage’s best value for money fly rod.
Sage utilized their tried and tested Graphite IIIe technology to construct the blanks, which might not be as sought after as their Konnetic HD rods, but the Pulse is still a killer in the 5 weight range.
4. Epic 580 FastGlass
If you are a more of a traditionalist, then the Epic 580 FastGlass should be on your wishlist.
It’s a modern fiberglass rod, but with a twist. Its light and doesn’t feel like a wet noodle in hand like some fiberglass rods do.
5. G. Loomis Asquith
The Asquith is a high-end offering from G. Loomis and is known to be a superb saltwater rod in the 8 - 12 weight range.
But the 5 weight is an excellent dry fly rod when tight loops and pin-point accuracy are important to you.
That being said, if a 5 weight is the most important rod in your arsenal, this would be an ideal rod if you’re looking for nothing but the best.
That’s it, that’s our list of the best 5 weight fly rods on the market this year.
Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced angler, a good 5 weight will always play a big role in your fishing stories.
For the beginner, I would suggest getting one of the cheaper rods, such as the Echo Base or Orvis Clearwater. Both offer exceptional value for money.
For most of us, mid-level rods will be all we’ll ever need. The rods offer so much performance that you rarely would need to upgrade from this level.
I’m always happy fishing a Sage Foundation or Pulse.
For the professional anglers and guys wishing to fish with nothing but the best, I don’t think there are many rods out there that will beat the Asquith in performance.

Tight lines!
My son loved this depth finder. He's used it for ice fishing and on his 14ft boat. Works well and is fairly easy to use. Saw fish on the depth finder, caught fish in that spot. Can't ask for more, except maybe an automatic fish cleaning option :)
Agree with Matt THANKS! I like to see a review that covers all price ranges. I have both Orvis and Sage mentioned and find them to be great rods in their class. Please keep doing these reviews...
Thanks Brad! It's not easy to please everyone (especially anglers 😉) but we're doing our best to properly go over all of these products and share the best out there. Cheers and thanks for commenting.
The big difference is not the cost of the “better quality” components used, it’s all in the exorbitantly marked up price tags and profits. Orvis stumps up Tom Rosenbauer’s brand ambassador paycheck out of these mark ups. There are too many brand sharks in the supply chain feeding off low cost inputs from S.Korea, Viet Nam, PRC and this just doesn’t translate into giving the angler more bang for his buck. It just perpetuates brand hype and the peer pressure that goes with it.
@@valruscheniko2321 Well said…
Nicely done video although I disagree with your choices. I was watching a live stream Q & A show featuring Tom Rosenbauer from Orvis. Someone asked him what was the best rod out there and he replied, "The one in your hand." Perfect answer.
Fair enough!
Bruh wtf I’m incredibly surprised by the amount of subs y’all have. Thought in would at least be over 100k. Keep going.
Thanks so much! Cheers
The basic Echo is a very good fishing rod. accurate casts ideal for larger dry flies .
Good video. I have an Orvis and Sage.
Thanks!
Thanks
Welcome
Nice balanced reviews. Good job. Wow, you have a tough audience with some of their chickensh*t negative comments.
Thanks Thomas! I'm glad you enjoyed the reviews. We take the constructive comments to try to make ourselves better 😉 Thanks for your comment! We're still working to improve and glad you enjoyed the videos so far.
I have been using a 5wt high modulus graphite Matrix rod made by kilwell NZ. It's 35yrs old now, I would not change it till she's dead. It's seen out two reels and god knows how many fly lines. It's a soft action rod which I like, not to many of my casts go past 30 mtrs. Most of my fly fishing has high grassy areas and trees. I'm thankful of the soft action. This rod at the time was not super expensive, but was up there, maybe about two thirds the price of the most expensive sage. I think I paid something like 700 NZ dollar's for it, came with an alloy tube and sock. That rod is like my A1 Browning shotgun, just a great mate.
A good rod needs no upgrade. Congrats on finding yours so many years ago. I wish I had a rod almost as old as me! 👍
These are awesome rods. I’ve been using my dads old one from 35-40 years ago. Still works a dream on the mighty tongariro
@3:27 Hahahaha! Brainbridge! Hahahaha! Good one mate!
Like your videos, question for you though. I only see name brand stuff on you vids . Was wondering about all the other rod companies out there that make their own rods and how they stack up against the big name brands ??? Not sure if i could list all the other companies names . But one example m👀nshine rods .
which rod is on the picture of the video? with the gold orvis
reel
Winston??
How much does a pfluger summit 1249 fly feel cost
Echo 🤟🏻🎣
How is this video published in 2020 the 2023 buyer's guide? Or did you just change out the title and thumbnail each year? It's a great video, just legitimally wondering!
have you tested the wetfly nitrolite? i want to buy it but i havent found a good review
Hey Sorry for the delayed response. We haven't tested it yet but we'll see if we can get our hands on one for a future review.
"Brain-Bridge Island Facility" 🤣 Close lol, Bainbridge Island, WA is a cool little Island Community in Puget Sound. A short ferry ride from Downtown Seattle. I just ordered a Sage Foundation 9' 5w today and its already in seattle lol. The Foundation is my first upgrade from the bass pro shop combo i started with as a gift last year. For $350, and $100 for some rio.Gold (already casting wayyy better) this rod seemed the perfect price/quality/spec point
Do i need sinking line for the subsurface flies?
Not always. You can dry dropper a nymph for example.
Great quality video
Thanks!
What about Vision?
I have two Shakespeare rods and a Maxcatch, in 5/6 weights. Three rods together cost less than one Hardy I had, and it broke! What does that tell you. The price of your gear means sweet fa, its down to the fisher that is using it.
Best budget rod is the shakespere agility end of
I was going going to buy a new fly rod from recommendations from the internet and UA-cam but I think the best way is go to a tackle shop and try as many rods as you can within your budget and find one that suits you. There is no one size fits all.
To each their own! I’ve done both many times. Most online retailers allow you to test the rod for 14 days and return if you don’t like it so I’ve been doing that for convenience but fly shops have great recs too. Cheers and thanks for commenting!
@@intoflyfishing I was not being a dick, if I come across like that sorry it wasn’t my intention. Just so much choice it’s making my head hurt
@@Bikemad24 No absolutely not. I didn't feel that you were! I agree with you that when you have local fly shops, it's great to have a chat with the staff there. Cheers and happy fly fishing!
Scott g series
Have one in 4W just as good as my Winston Pure in 5W. Both put the fly on the money when casting.
Just couldn’t do one under $100 sucks for me
It’s great to have cheaper rods for beginners to get them into the sport, but there are great 5wt rods in the $400-$500 range.
@@intoflyfishing I’m a begginer
@@hyperstriper9981 And you're spending more than $100? I don't think I understood your comment. There are plenty of great rods under $100 as well.
@@intoflyfishing I would like a combo under $120
@@hyperstriper9981 for that low price I'd consider a Maxcatch Extreme combo kit amzn.to/3t08aLG or a Wildwater amzn.to/3oskAsg

The echo base is hardly the best 5 weight. Is the list best fly rod, or best value?
No Scott or gloomis?
My personal preference, G.Loomis, but I've only fished a couple of each personally. That's also a controversial question that many Scott lovers will probably bash me for!
@@intoflyfishing well to be fair both Scott and gloomis share the same characteristics, but I’ve got two stream dance’s 3wt and a 6wt I’ve got two nrx’s 5wt and a 6wt and I’ve got a pro4x 5wt and a glxpro in a 6wt all teamed up with hardy reels and rio lines.
I’ve also got a scott radian in a 6wt and a g series in a 5wt they are good rods but definitely only popular in down in the Southern Hemisphere dude to media pushing, gloomis and sage definitely out class them in my personal opinion.
So how do you have a 2022 buyers guide when the video is a yea old with comments that are a year old. Hmm something’s not adding up here lol
A lot of these lists remain the same year after year. Some of the best rods out there have been around for 5+ years. Still, I get where you're coming from and we're working hard on updating each of these lists, but with a team of just 5 guides it's taking some time! Next up is Euro Nymphing Rods 2022. I hope you'll watch. Thanks for the comment.
This is clearly a "best value" video. Should consider revising the video title.
If you're going to buy a fly rod buy Fenwick
this video is more like the best value 5wt than the best 5wt.
Thanks for the comment. We definitely use value as part of our selection criteria.
Bummer, it doesn't seem like you own any of these fly rods.
Actually between our team we own or have tested all of these rods. Because of covid it’s almost impossible for us to get footage of them. Sorry it didn’t seem like it.
Wrong title
8 wt or 9 wt is the best you can buy 5 wt is too flimsy forget orvis it's always overpriced
you can buy a 12IM carbon 8 wt for around 300 on amzon
8 wt and 9wt would be overkill for small trout on backstreams in the US or Canada. The weight of the rod is dependent on the fishing scenario and target species, so saying one it too flimsy would only depend on what target is. Orvis make some great rods and the aftersales service keeps them near the top, something you don't always get with cheap rods on Amazon. TFO is a $300 range maker with great rods though.
@@intoflyfishing in this part of Canada trout can be over 10 lbs and salmon can be over 50 lbs if you fish for 10 inch trout in a stream a 3 wt might be appropriate here where the big brutes swim its advisable to use an 8 or 9 wt rod . When you hook into a big trout a 5 wt rod will not be ideal. most people here us 8 or 9wt due those mitigating factors. as well it makes more sense to have an 8wt that can handle all scenarios than to show up under equipped.
I've landed plenty of 10lb trout on a 5wt without issue. But yes, whatever rod suits you best.
You know when every review on a pole is "Exceptional" "High Performance" "Value For Money" that they're just marketers and don't know what the hell they're talking about. The same can be said about cars, shoes, lipstick, etc. The only real information I walked away with was make/models and prices... Stinky.
I wish people would just make honest to God reviews about the rod they own and use most. Why they like it, why it's the best, etc. You know, like you learn how to do in grade school. There would be about a billion less pointless videos clogging up youtube and the service might actually become useful again.
We have full reviews for these on our blog and UA-cam if you would like more info. These are short lists of 5-10 products and we try to keep them under 10-15 minutes as people loose interest on UA-cam. Given that time constraint we jam as much info as we can and recommend checking individual hands on reviews for more info.
hm... I never learned how to edit and create valuable review videos in in my grade school! 😂
We have individual hands on reviews for all rods on our channel as the video says.
i don't want to hear about what a jear junkie thinks. I want to hear what a great fly Fisherman thinks.
Thanks for the comment! Luckily it's both in the case of this list. Someone who's been fly fishing for 25+ years, professionally guided and fished all over the world and is really passionate about the sport.
If this is a list of the “best” fly rods on the market, why would you include value fly rods? While yes they are good for the value, they’re definitely not the best.
I'd beg to differ. I think that value definitely has to be a part of the equation. Some people can't afford a $1,400 Sage so they tend to appreciate great value and well priced rods on lists like these.
There’s no such thing as a 1400 dollar Sage. Sage’s most expensive rod is 950. Also, the title is “Best 5 Weight Fly Rods” why wouldn’t you therefore include the best 5 weight fly rods in your video and include another video talking about the best value rods
Zach Pardue yes there are $1400 sage rods like the igniter Spey specialty rod and custom built options. Duly noted about the value vs best videos. We will take that into consideration for future lists on the UA-cam channel. On the blog we have them separated that way but people tend to enjoy a more all-in-one approach when watching video content. Still, I’ll be talking to the team about a best value video.
the video is for the best......not the best value.......I can never get back the time I just wasted watching this nonsense.@@intoflyfishing
