Thank you! Finally got to use my Striker 4, a couple weeks ago, it’s a great instrument. I thought of you and your videos the whole day. Spent most of the time scrolling through settings and adjusting it different ways, Gain, Frequencies, Surface noise, etc.(I still have a Lot to learn). Not really concerned with tracking and waypoints yet, but will want to use markers when I locate fish. I really enjoy the details of depth and speed. I’ll probably be using it tomorrow for the second time..I’ll be looking for those shad! Thanks again for teaching us about it. 👍👍. Have a great weekend! 🎣
Glad you are loving your fish finder and it is awesome to hear these videos have help you along the way. I have some plans for some a video with my recommended setting for the Striker 4 coming at some point.

Super educational video my friend. I picked up some good tips on gizzard shad. Always wondered how to tell the difference. Appreciate the time you put into these. Big thumbs up.
This is an awesome video. I've been up in the river with arches like those big shad thinking they were striper. Then I wondered why nothing was biting. This was very informative. Now I have to see if I can throw a cast net from a kayak 😜
If you look close at the arches of gizzard shad you will see in the image I put in the video some larger fish inside the school....those were likely striper...they are larger and brighter red.
Love the tutorial on the screenshots and identifying structure, fish and baitfish. Great tutorial my friend, I loved it. Left a big 👍from the North. Adrian

That was an EXCELLENT tutorial I learned a lot from this series. Who knew you could get more information besides depth and water temp from a fish finder?? LOL
Definitely, I always say that most people who buy fish finders just have expensive water temp and depth readers since they never truly learn how to use them. Glad you have learned a ton

Awesome, congrats on the fish finder...you already are doing better than most by actually learning to use it. If you have any questions feel free to ask...just ask them in a new comment or they tend to get lost sometimes.
If the shad is already behind you when you see them on the display (history), how do you manage to net them....do you back up? I am only comfortable throwing a net off the left side of my kayak, how do i know the shad are not slightly off to the right.
Yes they are...I normally just turn around or toss from the rear deck of the boat. 2D Sonar does not show you left or right, just that something is within the cone. Luckily we really are not talking about 100's of feet differences in most cases. In 20ft of water our cone may only be 10-15ft wide...now consider shad are in the middle of the water column...now that area is maybe 5-10 ft....so you have some margin

Awesome video. I watched first two videos of yours about the striker 4. I took mine to the water today but I don’t get that blue colored on top and red in the bottom like yours. I pretty much see dots all over the screen. Not sure if I need to change something in the settings or my sonar is not working properly? Thanks for any feedback
I am really enjoying your video so thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question just to make sure I understand what your examples are showing. Is the boat moving in all the example screen images? I assume the large fish, schooling fish, and (obviously) the structure is stationary but the boat is moving. If the boat were stationary and the fish were stationary, the screen would be showing horizontal lines, right? Thanks again.
In general you got it, but keep in mind your example would need the water, boat, and all variables to be perfectly motionless...which is about impossible. However if you see a straight line in the water column, then yes it is likely a fish that has remained within the transducer beam. For the most part structure never makes really straight lines, because the other thing to think about is that we are seeing and thinking movement in 2D from looking at the sonar, when in fact we are really sealing with a 3D object and multiple planes....so any movement up, down, left, right, ect all will change the image some.
@@1Cast1Fish Thank you for the reply. I'm new to the Sonar/Fish Finder world in my small kayak and the complexity of interpreting the Garmin Striker 4 screen has surprised me. Your tutorials are very helpful. I'm hopeful that I can get a handle on the info from the Striker and it will actually help me catch fish. My primary motivation is to keep my 7-year-old grandson interested in going out on the lake with me and catch enough fish to make it fun. Maybe I should turn the screen analysis over to him since he seems to be a wizard with anything that has a screen on it.
Hello👋 congratulations for this video! 👍 I would like you to explain🤔 to us about the seabed, how the sand, stones, algae and mud are depicted. Thank you🙏
It is a great unit....be sure to check out Amazon too...some good deals to be had there sometimes. I am sure you will love the unit. Be sure to get a good power source for it as well....I am partial to the Nocqua listed in the description, it s a bit more expensive, but is very versatile and has been great the few years I have had mine.
Just found your channel, thanks for taking the time to explain how the Striker4 works. Do you have a video, or can you tell us how large the fish are that you identify at 4:24? I'm trying to target larger fish in our local reservoir but keep catching only 6-10 inch perch and bass. Thanks.
Telling a fish size strictly from a return is somewhat hard. The fish icon can be set to identify large or small fish, but is not very accurate IMO. I would look not at the size of the overall return, but the size of the "Red" portion or hardest return portion as that is normally the air bladder. Bigger bladder bigger fish...or it can at least get you closer.
@@1Cast1Fish ok after install and taking it for the time question the fish on the screen are located under the boat in back by the transducer or front of the boat.
Depends on where your transducer is located....if its on the rear of the boat throw the net from the back. If its on the front trolling motor, once you see the bait...back up a bit then throw the net.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering how large of a net did you use to catch those shads. I have tried to use a 6 foot throw net on in the past and was not able to get it to work right, I was thinking about trying a 4 foot throw net from my boat to to catch some of the bait fish I see on my fish finder or is that to small. Do you you think a 4 foot throw net would be ok?
So I use a 8ft for most of my baitfish catching in lakes...I occasionally will use a 12ft as well. The 4ft will most likely be on the small side....those baitfish are fast...lol But the biggest thing is to practice throwing...then practice some more, it is a form of art throwing the net....and trust me I am not perfect at it and make a mess of it sometimes too.
New subscriber. Love the channel. I’m just starting with electronics for fishing. I noticed that on a couple images from this video, structure and bait fish are both red. That throws me off. When the bait fish are close to structure, how can you tell the difference? Sorry for the ignorance. Thanks in advance.
Practice, patience, and experience will help sort them out better over time. You can tell the fish since they are normally harder returns (more red) and their shape (more arch like). When its all close together it can be tough for sure....but keep at it and you will get better at seeing everything. It took me a long time to finally use my fish finder to its fullest.
@@1Cast1Fish one more question. when your making a map of the lake can you have that feature going while using the traditional sonar screen at the same time?
I love your videos. Just bought a Striker 4 original but I've been kicking myself for not spending the extra to buy a version that included down imaging. Can I get by with only traditional sonar or would you say down imaging is more important?
@@1Cast1Fish Walleye, Crappies, Pike and Bass. I'm moving to Northern Minnesota so I am unfamiliar with these lakes. I have fished every year of my life but only in small, weedy lakes and never with electronics. SUPER excited to learn. I have watched videos where it seems as though anglers are emphasizing only down imaging and they only focus their efforts on identifying structure. One video mentioned they have given up on traditional sonar altogether. I'm sure this unit will help me land more fish than otherwise, but I do wonder if down imaging is more important than traditional. Any thoughts?
Believe it or not years ago people caught plenty of fish with standard 2D sonar only in black and white...lol The down imaging is just another tool, it does help in some situations, but if you learn to understand your 2D sonar you will probably do just fine. Now I have fished Minnesota lakes when I lived in the Midwest, and most were deeper and very clear and we did target alot of structure. The down imaging would have been a great additional tool to have, but it is not a requirement. So with that long winded answer, honestly with the standard you will probably do just fine once you get familiar with the water and interpreting what you see on the screen...however the issue you may have is depending on the waters size you will not regret not having down imaging as much as you will regret not having the contour mapping...many time we targeted contour breaks and changes and the mapping feature on the Plus and CV would definitely help there.
I just got a Garmin Striker 4. I noticed when I'm in chip 77 mode, I will get a lot of small marks on my screen. When I turn it to 200 chirp, they are gonna. The small marks look like tiny fish because of the curved shape. Are these baitfish? Also what is the point of ever running the unit not in chirp mode. Last question, is there a way to find the thermocline of a lake with this unit? Thanks! Great video
As for the first part the 77 and 200 offer different cone sizes...possibly the fish are within the larger 77 cone angle, but outside the smaller 77. I normally always use chirp mode...non chirp may be of benefit in water with lots of debris like after a fall turnover since it has less sonar pings and therefore picks up less of the debris to cloud your screen with junk. To find the thermocline you have to turn the sensitivity way up....it is called "Gain" on the Striker 4.
Hi thanks for those great videos. Can i identify small horse mackarel and sand smelts with garmin striker 4 series? As ypu know they are small as 2 3 4 inches and they generally live as hundreds or thousands.
Subscriber here. Great instructional videos thanks. Would you please give me your wisdom on best placement of the Garmin Striker 4 transducer for my Lifetime Tamarack? I had planned on using the adhesive base to place it forward inside the hull?
Locating the bait or fish with transducer on the transom, are the fish or bait at the rear of the boat? How to determine location of fish or bait from the boat?
So the zoom has noting to do with thermocline...first you need a thermocline, unlike most believe not every body of water has one. Now to find it if it is there, you must up your gain and adjust the noise reduction settings. You need to play around with it and adjust the gain up and noise reduction down. If there it will show as a line that looks like noise or debris in the water column.
Thank you for your reply! I am in Central Oregon and like to fish many of the high altitude lakes which can run deep. I will look at adjusting the Garmin as you had suggested. Thanks again 🎣
Great video, Paul! Interpreting fish finders is something I don't have much experience with, and you presented the info very well. We saw you on Adam's channel and are new subscribers to your channel. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Im extremely pleased with the result Paul! Everything came easy to identify! It helps me a lot especially in the deep water!! Thanks Man 🙂🙂 How can i contact u in private? I hv lot of things to share))
That's tough to do without alot of work and experience. ..but one piece of advice I can give is to really think about each species...if I see fish hugging the bottom, they might be catfish....if I see a bunch of small marks all over a brush pile, might be crappie, if I see marks suspended over structure or within the structure....or near bait....might be bass, ect.
I've watched several of your videos Paul. You have helped me shorten my learning curve.

Great channel... 🤝👍
Thank you
what setting is this on , do you pretty much use the same one everytime? just found your channel btw , diggin it
I change my settings a fair amount based on conditions. But I almost always run the Chirp setting
@@1Cast1Fish one more question. when your making a map of the lake can you have that feature going while using the traditional sonar screen at the same time?
Yep
I love your videos. Just bought a Striker 4 original but I've been kicking myself for not spending the extra to buy a version that included down imaging. Can I get by with only traditional sonar or would you say down imaging is more important?
What kind of species you target? What type of water you fishing?
@@1Cast1Fish, this is great, thank you!!
@@1Cast1Fish appreciate the response! Thanks for your help
No problem
Hi thanks for those great videos. Can i identify small horse mackarel and sand smelts with garmin striker 4 series? As ypu know they are small as 2 3 4 inches and they generally live as hundreds or thousands.
Should without issue
Seru ini.
Thank you
excellent my friend, thank you!!!
Glad you liked it!
Is the Garmin 4cv the same as the 5cv just a larger screen? Thanks for making these videos.
That is correct
Great info, thanks
You are very welcome
Subscriber here. Great instructional videos thanks. Would you please give me your wisdom on best placement of the Garmin Striker 4 transducer for my Lifetime Tamarack? I had planned on using the adhesive base to place it forward inside the hull?
Good spot to me...that's where I place mine
@@1Cast1Fish Thank you sir.
You are welcome
very nice video
Thank you
Can I use fish finder Garmin Striker 4 in a winter- for ice fishing?
Yes many do, they have a specific ice transducer, but with some skills you can get the standard transducer to stay horizontal
Locating the bait or fish with transducer on the transom, are the fish or bait at the rear of the boat? How to determine location of fish or bait from the boat?
I normally toss the net from the rear if using a transom transducer.
How am I able to locate the thermocline using the Garmin 4? Does it have anything to do with the zoom function? Thank you
So the zoom has noting to do with thermocline...first you need a thermocline, unlike most believe not every body of water has one.
Good stuff man
Thanks a ton man...do you recognize the background for this one?
Lake Anna right ? We gotta get out there it’s long over due
@@johndewling9069 Good guess....its been awhile since i have been there...since last fall
1Cast 1Fish wow that is a while let me know if you wanna get out there
Great video, Paul! Interpreting fish finders is something I don't have much experience with, and you presented the info very well. We saw you on Adam's channel and are new subscribers to your channel. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Awesome and thank you, Adam is a great guy....hope to get out with him mor eon the water.
Im extremely pleased with the result Paul! Everything came easy to identify! It helps me a lot especially in the deep water!! Thanks Man
🙂🙂
How can i contact u in private? I hv lot of things to share))
Glad you enjoyed and found this video useful.
Good stuff. It can be tricky knowing what you're seeing down there.👍💯
It can be, but with patience and practice it gets easier and easier....and you will get better and better
Thank you
You're welcome
thanks man.
Happy to help...thanks
the only issues I'm having with reading sonar is how to differentiate the type of fish. bass, crappie, catfish, ext...... any tips?
That's tough to do without alot of work and experience. ..but one piece of advice I can give is to really think about each species...if I see fish hugging the bottom, they might be catfish....if I see a bunch of small marks all over a brush pile, might be crappie, if I see marks suspended over structure or within the structure....or near bait....might be bass, ect.
@@1Cast1Fish I appreciate it man!
