Serendipity is actually more like fortuitous. Like a lucky coincidence. Fun fact: Jeremy Piven and John Cusack are... were best friends in real life, so their chemistry was real-Real. And they acted several movies together. Apparently, John Cusack's career slowing down and Piven's picking up during Entourage brought strain to their friendship. But they are always a delight to watch together. Especially in Grosse Point Blank.
I really loved Underworld. The first two movies are great, and then the third that explains all the backstory is fantastic. Bill Nighy is, as he always is, amazing.
I know that this story will never happen in real life, but sometimes we just want to escape from reality and dreamin that something magical, some serendipitious moment will come to our live.
The story is improbable but not impossible! There is always a chance of finding that special person, even if we get lost at times. As many have said, we can make our own luck! 👍
Such a great reaction. The book gift scene always gets me. Such a great movie, and amazed you two first met as kids at school. Much love from New Zealand.
One of my favorite rom-coms of all time. The music is great, the chemistry is great between Cusack and Beckinsale (albeit brief), and story is just fun.
I love that the current partners aren't assholes. They're just not right for our main characters, something is missing - just like in real life. I'm friends with all of my exes/ex-crushes, no matter who ended things/rejected me; we just weren't right together as romantic partners. In this aspect, this movie really speaks to me while still appealing to my inner hopeless romantic ♥️
I’m also friends with most of my exes (except my ex-wife, but we’re still cordial & I’m still friends with her mom). I’ve never understood why people hate their exes so much. I’m always surprised that such a high percentage of ex couples don’t get along with (or even despise) each other.
I love the fact that the only time John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale were together in the movie was the beginning and the end. Very unique for a romantic movie.
That's true. In all the rom coms I've watched (a lot!) only Sleepless in Seattle is similar and they only actually meet at the end. Both movies are so unique! I really enjoyed their reaction to this film.
On a side note, THANKS DUNCAN for this selection. Listening to mr and mrs tbr at the end talking about never hearing about this flick would never have even known to check it out... I know it's not in the accepted cream-of-the-crop of films out there, but it kills me that if it wasn't for the 'winning suggestion', tiny gems like this would never be on a reaction channel much less see the light of day on one. So many similar flicks like Guarding Tess, The Commitments, Tin Cup, Goodbye Girl, Local Hero, Gosford Park, Fabulous Baker Boys, Remains of the Day, Stranger Than Fiction, Fly Away Home, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Bridget Jones Diary, Four Weddings & A Funeral... 😂😂😂
Back in 2003, I was watching it with a roommate. He says “Man, this guy has worse luck than I do” and without missing a beat (though not maliciously) I said “Nah, he gets the girl at the end.” He has now been married for about 17 years. Guess the joke for making that comment was on me! 😂😂😂
As a millennial hopeless romantic myself, I adore this movie. I have Serendipity tattooed on my forearm, this movie holds such a special place in my heart
Love this movie! Was going through a horrible time in my marriage and saw this playing on HBO one late night. Taped it and watched it like 3 times in a row, never going to bed. Felt completely different and shortly after this finally got divorced. Vowed to never live life with someone without passion and I owed it to this movie. So much happier all the way around and never miss an opportunity to watch this. Glad you liked this and great choice Duncan!!!!
This is one of the several rom-coms of that period I loved. One that is not mentioned so much that is wonderful also is French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. Maybe that could be added to the wheel!
I was talking about this movie once with someone who hated it for the same reason I liked it. I really hated movies where one (or both) of the main characters would be involved with a clearly awful person that they stayed with for no explicable reason, so I liked that in this one, their respective partners were pretty damned good. At no point did I think "WTF is wrong with you" about either of them. The person I was talking to hated it because they didn't like that these two really exceptional and nice people ended up getting dumped.
Not a movie I expected to pop up on a movie review channel, but kind of a guilty pleasure movie of mine from the era, even if ridiculous. Kate of this era was ridiculously beautiful, and that little nose crinkle thing she did always stuck with me (along with Elisha Cuthbert's lip bite in The Girl Next Door).
Serendipity is happiness by chance, like because of being in the right place at the right time that leads to good fortune. Some of my favorite Kate Beckinsale movies are, Cold Comfort Farm (1995), Emma (1996), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Underworld (2003). And favorite John Cusack movies: Eight Men Out (1988), Broadcast News (1987), Say Anything (1989), Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), Pushing Tin (1999), Cradle Will Rock (1999), Being John Malkovich (1999), High Fidelity (2000), America's Sweethearts (2001), Runaway Jury (2003), Martian Child (2007).
Yea! So glad that you two loved this movie... it is so fun so romantic funny and one of the best soundtracks. So cool that the two of you just got into it and enjoyed it for what it is. "Prado"😊

Great movie! If you go back and watch there are many more coincidents that you miss on the first viewing. An example is the guy who hits the golf ball that hits Molly Shannon is Haley's father.
I went on a date with my then boyfriend to see this movie and then went to the actual Serendipity 3 (the full name of the cafe/restaurant) for a Frozen Hot Chocolate after. Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol used to hang out there.

Serendipity was the first movie my now wife and I watched together. I had already seen it and owned it as John Cusack had a run of some of my absolute favorite movies and could do no wrong by me. I brought it with me when we had plans to hang out. Because of both the personal meaning and the fact that the plot is 100% in her wheelhouse, it has become one of her all time favorites. We went to NYC for a couple of days last year for her 40th birthday and stopped at Serendipity. Unfortunately we didn't know at the time that they take reservations for a reason. After well over an hour of waiting, we took our names off the list. However as one local we met later in the day put it, we still won as we at least got to go in and see it without spending $20 for a single ice cream.
Yeah, same thing similar happened to us...Since we were in New York thought we would lunch at Serendipity and a New Yorker heard were heading there she said "...we'd have quite a long wait." We opted for another restaurant cause we were hungry LOL

This was one of the sad movies that came out after 9/11 that had to make a tough call about what to do with the Twin Towers; they opted to edit the towers out of a scene where they were visible (I think they were visible from the park… maybe a daylight scene from the ice rink… I can’t remember for sure but I think I remember reading articles discussing it at the time and it may be easy to find with a quick internet search). The setting and release timing may have made this movie less popular in the romcom fan world as a lot of people weren’t in the mood for this when it came out and many only discovered it on video later.

@@misterkite One Crazy Summer is pretty crazy! Yeah... The Sure Thing is slightly less weird than those two, but still good for a few laughs. That one would still get made today sadly lol.
Like most movies from the 2000’s. I saw this while watching the premium movie channels. I was 14 and I just loved the whole thing. Was a hopeless romantic as a young man and this movie spoke to that.
I've seen this movie in parts for decades. The one thing that caught my eye since the first time is the book they chose, which is "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez (favourite writer and book). It's the story about a couple and their impossible love, that keeps them apart for almost their entire lives, until they're quite old. It's tragic, but it's such a great book. It might not be as sweet... but that might be why they chose that particular book: to create a contrast with this story.
You both REALLY need to see more romance movies together (like the "Before Sunrise" trilogy, directed by Richard Linklater, starring Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy) on the channel. Love your reactions. Best wishes from Nigeria.
Love, love, love this movie ❤ However, Sara for me is past obsession, while Haley is someone who knows and loves Jonathan for years. Why would anyone throw away a great relationship for someone they only know for like a day? I know it’s fiction but still it gets my nerve 😆
Serendipity is actually more like fortuitous. Like a lucky coincidence. Fun fact: Jeremy Piven and John Cusack are... were best friends in real life, so their chemistry was real-Real.

Serendipity is indeed a real place in New York (actually called Serendipity3). Their frozen hot chocolate is iconic.
They dont make romcoms like this anymore...no good actors either...loved yalls reaction❤

One of my fav movies ever.
Awesome reaction
You both REALLY need to see more romance movies together (like the "Before Sunrise" trilogy, directed by Richard Linklater, starring Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy) on the channel.
Love your reactions. Best wishes from Nigeria.
Seeing as you enjoyed this, I recommend One Fine Day (1996) with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer. A must watch, imo.
Love this film
The music January Rain, by David Gray is such a great end to the score.
Love, love, love this movie ❤
However, Sara for me is past obsession, while Haley is someone who knows and loves Jonathan for years.
Why would anyone throw away a great relationship for someone they only know for like a day? I know it’s fiction but still it gets my nerve 😆
You would both like The Way Way Back. Underrated film with Steve Carrell and Sam Rockwell.
If you keep going with John Cusack, definitely watch Identity. Also with Ray Liotta and Amanda Peet. Its a horror, so maybe more your guys' style.
Serendipity: the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for or an instance of this
Kate Beckinsale and Bridget Moynahan in the same movie, someone is trying to drive me crazy.
Love Kate Beckinsale ❤❤
I love John Corbett's band, its so bad lol 😅...he really commits to it 😂
Bridget Moynahan started dating Tom Brady three years after filming Serendipity. They dated from 2004-2006 and have a son together.
Great Reaction.
For a really good "Lars" character, please watch "Lars And The Real Girl"
