it's not that Grandpa was Westley; that part at the end was to signify that the Grandfather was telling his grandson that he loved him, just like Westley would say it to Buttercup at the beginning of the story. also, RIP to Peter Falk (The Grandfather). whenever I see the end of this movie, it makes me a bit teary. thanks for the reaction, guys! ❤
Not only traveling through time, but from a fantasy version of the Early Renaissance period. Grandpa also mentions that his own father used to read the book to him, meaning he’s clearly not the character in the book.
One of my favorite stories about this movie is about Inigo's revenge for his father. At the end when he says, "I want my father back, you SOB!" the actor, Mandy Patinkin, was thinking of his own dad who died when he was 18. He said he imagined fighting the great evil that was cancer who took his father's life, as he plunged the blade into him. 😥💔😭
I think this might be why he doesn't like it when people quote that line to him (which they do ALL THE TIME). To them it's just a fun movie quote, but to him it's a reminder of all that
As a member of The Dead Dad Club, this is one of the most wrenching lines in the movie, and I was lucky enough to have an amazing dad until I was 33. Mandy Patinkin did an AMAZING job. Every cast member did, actually
Wesley was being so strange with Buttercup because he was upset she was getting married. He feared she was marrying Prince Humperdink for money and status instead of waiting for Wesley, the poor farmboy, to return.
Right. Or worse: She actually loved someone else. He loves her so much, he would probably let her marry someone else if it would make her truly happy, but he had to be sure of her feelings before he could reveal himself because otherwise she may not tell the truth out of guilt (or out of fear she wouldn't recognize his meaningless farm boy existence, since it's been years and she's engaged to a prince now).
Wesley’s actor is Cary Elwes, a very big actor in the 90s and early 2000s. His list includes Saw, Stranger Things, Robinhood Men In Tights, Liar Liar and a lot of others
He’s about to be in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Henry Cavill coming out super soon too!! And Robin (Buttercup) was just in Damsel on Netflix with Millie Bobby Brown
An important distinction is that a story can be “romantic” without featuring or focusing on the act of two people falling in love (they took care of that in the beginning). A romantic movie can include things like people in peril, lost love, reuniting love, sweet revenge with cool swordplay, etc. That all tallies up to a “romantic” story.
Excellent point. And there need not be a love story at all. Classic "romance" is heroic adventure. Yes, there can be a "damsel in distress" but that's just one possible element. And the love element can be truly messed up, if present. "Wuthering Heights" is an example of a gothic romance that is only barely a story of love between Catherine and Heathcliff. With all this in mind, "The Princess Bride" is ironically not about the titular character at all, but is rather the adventures of Westley, Inigo, and Fezzik. Inigo, in particular, is on his own heroic, romantic quest.
This movie has multiple of the most quotable lines ever. I think I quote “I am not left handed either,” “anybody want a peanut,” and “i’m swamped” all the time 😂😂
this movie is so iconic that years ago when my parents were recording a message on their answering machine, they did a parody of miracle max’s “have fun storming the castle!”
Zuff has the read of the situation when it comes to Buttercup. This almost plays like a parody of fairytale adventure fantasy and unfortunately, Buttercup is pretty true to the classic formula of the damsel in distress princess with little agency or dimension. Her character is basically a prop to serve the motivations of the men (the kidnappers fight to keep her for profit, the prince uses her for his political ambitions, and she's the object of Wesley's hero quest). The only independent expression of her will is to die rather than be with without Wesley which doesn't exactly contradict all this. So I agree, her character is quite uninteresting. That aside, I have such a fondness for this movie. The other characters are so distinct and memorable and this movie is one of the most quotable of all time. The fight choreography is next level and it's just genuinely funny. It strikes the perfect balance between absurdity and reverence. The situations are ridiculous but you're still invested in the characters and their emotional journey. The creatures and sets are a little hokey but it 100% works. Who could forget that rodent of an usual size? I'm pretty sure that's a partial cause of my mother's rodent phobia lol.
I disagree: Buttercup has agency, though not a lot of liberty to exercise it: She tries to escape the boat, and when she's brought back, she looks Vizzini in the eye and basically calls him a coward. She defies "Roberts" to his face, accuses him of killing Westley, and pushes him down the hill. If it had been Roberts, she would have been free to either go back to the prince, who was on his way, or try something else. She makes the decision to go back to Humperdinck in order to save Westley from being skewered by arrows. She accuses Humperdinck of being what he truly is - the only person in the palace who looks him in the eye and speaks truth, including at the wedding where she notes there is fear in his eyes. So though she isn't a jumping, running, athletic person, she exercises the agency she has. This may be overshadowed by the more rambunctious action going on, but it's a mistake to overlook it.
The actor that played the 6 fingered man is the real life husband of Jamie Lee Curtis. He also played the dark haired lead guitarist in Spinal Tap, which is a great mockumentary of a fake metal band from the early 80's. He is quite a talented actor
It wasn’t all that long ago when we could have reasonably said, “Reactions to _The Princess Bride?_ I don’t think they exist.” Since then, of course, they’ve certainly pounced on us.
You have no idea how happy I am that someone noticed how the musical score beats in time with the sword clashes during the count rugen fight scene! So powerful and iconic!
Cary Elwes (Westley) has been in a lot of movies. Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Glory, Twister, Liar Liar (w/Jim Carey) and Kiss The Girls to name a few. They hired two of the best fencing masters in the world to train the actors who played Westley and Inigo. They spent weeks training on set abd became so proficient that when they finally filmed the fight scene on the cliff that it was over too quickly. The fencing master had to rechoreograph the whole fight to stretch it out. We ended up with one of the best sword fights on film. 29:56 that hit on the head actually knocked Cary Elwes out because the other actor hit him too hard. He'd already broken or sprained his foot while riding an atv on set but kept quiet about it so he went through a lot of pain while filming this movie. They let Billy Crystal ad lib his whole part. Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) strained to hold his laughter in so hard that he bruised a couple of ribs. Rob Reiner, the director, had to walk off set because he couldn't stop laughing.
I see this claim so often that I'm starting to think that it qualifies as a "common myth." Billy Crystal could not possibly have ad-libbed all of his lines, because most of what he says is straight from the book. Anyone who's read the book immediately recognizes most of his dialogue. I suspect what actually happened is that he and Carol Kane ad-libbed a great many lines _during shooting,_ which led to the bruised rib and whatnot, but not too many made their way into the final cut.
Zuff saying, "This is real old" right off the bat. Someday, gentlemen, you'll too be in your 30s wondering where the time went. (And also arguing with "kids" in their twenties that you are, in fact, not old.) Lol. Love you guys.
Being a child of the pre-streaming 90s is funny in that you watched enough TV to develop comfort movies, but they are whatever random collection of tapes you recorded from the TV and what you could find / convince your parents to spend money on in Blockbuster. RH: Men in Tights and The Fifth Element were mine, and my sister and I could quote them verbatim as 6-8 year olds when nobody else our age had heard of them 😄 Still love The Fifth Element, but I haven't seen Men in Tights in a long time - I hope its aged well, maybe they'll watch it someday!
Farquad from Shrek was based on Prince Humperdink. All the characters in Shrek were from fairy tales, and this is a fairy tale movie. So they brought Humperdink in as Farquad. They even copied a lot of his story beats, like the torture scene.
Hey, an excuse for me to use my English degree in the wild! It’s worth noting that the “romantic” literary period wasn’t necessarily related to love stories at all-it was characterized primarily by an emphasis on heightened emotion and nature (and, in gothic romance, an added fixation on religion, the supernatural, and death). Someone else mentioned Wuthering Heights (which is an excellent example of a novel from the Romantic subgenre that is not a love story at all, despite a love story being part of the plot), but novels like The Scarlet Letter (in which a woman’s long-finished affair destroys her life and wracks everyone involved with guilt), the Hunchback of Notre Dame (which has very little in common with the Disney film, although the Hellfire song comes close to the novel’s actual tone) and The Count of Monte Cristo (revenge, revenge, and more revenge) are other good examples. Emotions like rage and grief and guilt play as large-if not more-of a role as love and desire do in this kind of “romance”. So Princess Bride is sort of parodying/enjoying the romance period with exaggerated elements of every trope, and that’s part of what makes it so funny. We all know how these stories should go, but the film always manages to both lean in and go sideways at the same time. The novel is a brilliant literary work, but the film does a fantastic job of capturing the humor. It’s where the modern genre of romance stole its name, but they focus primarily on the emotion of love and usually forget the focus on nature altogether. And if you cared enough to read this far, thanks for letting me ramble on!
Westley (Cary Elwes) is a Legend, he’s in Stranger things, the Saw movies, men in tights ( my favorite movie) and alot more. He’s 61 years old and he’s still soo handsome and amazing.
Zuff was a whole other level of Zuff in this reaction. 😂 I love this movie! It was one of Robin Wright’s first films. She was mostly known for the soap opera Santa Barbara. It was a big deal when she was cast in this movie at the time.
I highly highly recommend Cary Elwes memoir "As You Wish" that is all about the making of this movie, it made me appreciate it so much more if that was possible. So many hilarious stories I cant even pick my favorite, plus a lot about Andre and his dedication to this role and how much the cast loved him. Even for those who aren't big readers, if you like this movie you must read it!
And for her it's been five years, and he definitely is not acting like the farm boy she remembers. He is not the same. In a weird way, she may be more perceptive than we are because even though he looks the same, he isn't the same.
@@rylenb.4827 His voice probably changed too. They would have been teenagers on the farm, so there's a chance his voice hadn't settled entirely yet. Plus 4 years of high seas and probably lots of drinking and shouting with pirates. Plus he was angry then, she most likely hadn't heard him angry before, or if she had, she romanticized that aspect of him because she was head over heels for he Farm Boy.
The 6 Fingered man is Chrstopher. Guest- Spinal Tap, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind etc. Also the Baron of Hayden Guest and married to Jamie Le Curtis- making her Lady Hayden Guest, a Baroness, they never use their titles professionally.
All through the 80's we were told we couldn't go swimming for 30 minutes after eating or else we'd risk cramps and drowning. I'd like to think the the miracle pill was a jab at that.
Buttercup didn't recognize Westley because Grampa is reading a book, The boy wouldn't know it was Westley until it's revealed. In the Lord of the Rings books, Merry rides for days with a stranger in the army of Rohan until the stranger reveals themself to be Eowyn to kill the Witch-King. Merry knew who Eowyn was too.
“I want my father back, you SOB,” is one of the greatest lines to conclude a fight against your mortal enemy in all of film and literature. EDIT: and obviously the wedding officiant’s place in film history is legend: “Twuuuuuuee Wuuuuvvvvv…”
Cary Elwes (Wesley) has been in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Saw, Liar Liar, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Twister and Bram Stoker’s Dracula to name a few. He’s in the upcoming Henry Cavill film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Inigo's quest for his father's killer is one of the most successful subplots in film history because in this fight he imagined that this was his chance to beat cancer, to come to terms with his father's death by getting revenge on cancer (The Six-Fingered Man).
For the drink duel, Vizzini switched the glasses and then chose his own. Then he watched to see what Wesley would do. When Wesley picked up his own glass and then drank without hesitation, Vizzini figured that, since Wesley didn't see him switch glasses, Wesley drank from his glass because he knew his wasn't poisoned. Then Vizzini drank from his glass (because he had the glass that Wesley thought was in front of him).
Prince Humperdinck, not king. The king is there till the very end. Though for us it's been only a few minutes from the time Westley leaves, for Buttercup it's been five years without a hint that he's okay. Also his behavior is nothing like the man who left the farm. In a way, she's right not to recognize him because he has changed a great deal. Both were poisoned, he's built up an immunity. If you watch this again and listen to the dialogue, you will catch it, as he states it fairly clearly. The line about swimming after an hour is a little joke referring to visits to the beach or the pool: parents always said you need to digest for an hour after eating before going swimming. The bishop is Peter Cook, one of great British comedy duo, the other being Dudley Moore. Grandpa is not Westley, he simply loves his grandson and remember that "as you wish" means "I love you". In what way was Buttercup not good? She was a truth speaker to Vizzini about courage; she saved Westley in the forest after he saved her; she's the only person who spends time with Humperdinck who looks him in the eye and insults him. That's pretty good.
19:00 Perspective illusion! Right when Westley is about to charge Fezzig, he seems just as tall, but he is uphill from Fezzig. When he charges downhill and rams into Fezzig, we can see their true difference in size. Fezzig is a good foot taller than Westley.
Thanks, Zuff! Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! 👑 This one is almost universally popular. IMDb lists it as adventure/comedy/family. They're downplaying the fantasy element, for sure. The romance is subtle but satisfying. It's directed by the wonderful Rob Reiner, who was a hilarious actor in his day and is a noble human being. ෴ The charming 'Iñigo Montoya' is played by Mandy Patinkin. Be sure to catch him in YENTL (1983) the drama/musical/romance. It's about a young woman who, in a time where females weren't permitted to attend Jewish schools, was determined to educate herself. It got numerous Golden Globes and Oscar nominations.
You know what's really fun? Seeing this movie with an audience when it tours revival houses, or on anniversaries. You should go. It sells out and the crowd is all ages.
Cary Elwes "Wesley" was in a movie called "Lady Jane" with Helena Bonham Carter based on the real life story of the Queen of England who only lasted 9 days on the throne. Excellent movie. I would love to see you guys react to that.
I have to chuckle to myself whenever I hear someone call this an "old" movie, when three of my favorite movies are "It's a Wonderful Life", "The Wizard of Oz", and 1933's "King Kong"! 😄
Zuff and Rob ( Bryce too ), besides playing Jenny Curran in "Forrest Gump" Robin Wright aka Princess Buttercup played General Antiope in "Wonder Woman", Justice League", & "Wonder Woman 1984" as well as "Zack Snyder's Justice League". Her third role ever was on the Daytime Soap Opera "Santa Barbara" as Kelly Capwell from 1984 - 1988 ( 538 episodes ). Robin is now staring as Queen Isabelle in "Damsel", staring Millie Bobby Brown.
An aside: Brandon Sanderson and his wife Emily watched this movie during the pandemic and loved it, except for how little Buttercup did to save herself. Brandon wrote Tress of the Emerald Sea for his wife, inspired by the movie but with the young woman, Tress, going on an adventure to save her love. 💚
22:35 Vizzini's switch mattered because he was rambling to try to get a reaction from Dread Pirate Roberts, when that didn't work, he switched the cups and chose but didn't drink before seeing that Roberts was happy with Vizzini's choice. So had it been a fair challenge, he would've likely tricked Roberts. It's often missed that Vizzini actually is using a good strategy there.
I read the book about two years before the movie came out. I was really hoping that it wouldn't suck. It's one of the few book to movie adaptations that is as good as or better than the book. Edited: And yes, I'm old enough to have watched this movie in the theaters when it came out. I've watched it over a hundred times, maybe more.
Time to watch Love and & Basketball 🏀 as a romance follow up! Lol, that aside this is an awesome movie and I'm glad y'all have seen it. As silly as I sometimes find it to call something a "classic", I think this definitely falls into that category.
I love how it’s such an unserious movie and probably one of the best rom com romantasies ever lol, so good and def gives me Monty python with a romance angel I love it 😂
The Princess Bride is my all-time favorite movie! My favorite characters are Inigo Montoya and Westley. Funny story about the movie: Andre the Giant let out a 17-minute fart during the scene where Fezzik, Inigo, and Westley are on the parapet of the castle. Cary Elwes wrote it in his book. Best part was Rob Reiner asking Andre "Hey Andre, are you okay?" Andre's response "I am now, boss!"
So Westley was played by Cary Elwes and he's been in tons of stuff (Kiss the Girls, Twister, Saw, Liar Liar) But he has also done voice acting for English dub for Studio Ghibli like the Cat Returns and Porco Rosso. He also did English dub for Felidae (so NOT a kid's cartoon but incredible nonetheless)
Robin Wright who plays Buttercup was also Joshi (Officer K's boss) in Blade Runner 2049. That is why the flowers that Ryan Gosling finds at the base of the tree in Dave Bautista's home at the beginning of the film are small yellow flowers...those flowers are buttercups as a nod to Robin Wright role in Princess Bride
Have you watched *Willow*? That one is a fun fantasy movie with both drama and comedy. Edit: For romance, I think you might like *While You Were Sleeping* with Sandra Bullock if you haven't reacted to that before.
Buttercup also trained Wonder Woman. So if you’ve seen that, yeah, she’s not a damsel in distress anymore. ;) And it was supposed to be a story with a little bit of everything. So it’s kind of a love story and a lot of an adventure story and then there’s the revenge and political intrigue and combat etc etc.
Arnold Schwarzenegger tells a story about how, when he was in his bodybuilding prime, Andre the Giant just manhandled him. He took Andre out to dinner. He picked up the check when it came, but Andre wanted to pay, Arnold insisted, said how Andre was the boss in the ring, but he was the boss there, Andre tells him that he's right, then proceeds to pick him up out of his chair, like he was a little kid, and sits him down on top of a tall wine cabinet. Arnold said it made him feel like a little doll put up on a shelf.
I'll never get used to reactors saying 'jeeze, that's so old' to movies that came out when I was in college. I never though being in my 50s was 'old', but I get it. In the 80's movies from the 40's were 'old' to me. You'll feel exactly the same if you're lucky enough to get here! 🤣 Hope you watch some genuinely 'old' films. I recommend starting with 'Casablanca'.
Hey rob, you mentioned your favourite scene is the sword fight on the rock, there a UA-cam video from Jill Bearup that does a fantastic breakdown of the technical elements and the choreography and it's def worth the watch!

Yeah,I’ve seen a few people think that and it always blows my mind. Cary Elwes ages into Peter Falk? And travels through time?
Not only traveling through time, but from a fantasy version of the Early Renaissance period. Grandpa also mentions that his own father used to read the book to him, meaning he’s clearly not the character in the book.

yes this is only the movie where i will allow the female character to have next to no agency
She also has a good amount of sassiness as another expression of her strong will, especially for this sort of damsel role.
I mean…it IS a parody! The Princess Bride is to princess movies as This Is Spinal Tap is to rockumentaries.
I disagree: Buttercup has agency, though not a lot of liberty to exercise it:

When Harry Met Sally & The Princess Bride both directed by Rob Reiner
Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin trained for that sword fight for *months* with the same master instructor who trained Errol Flynn.
I know you guys have referenced Psych a few times, in which case you may recognize Cary Elwes (Wesley) as Pierre Despereaux.
Westley (Cary Elwes) is a Legend, he’s in Stranger things, the Saw movies, men in tights ( my favorite movie) and alot more. He’s 61 years old and he’s still soo handsome and amazing.
The rodent of unusual size attacking Westley right after he brings them up is my favorite part lmaoo
Zuff was a whole other level of Zuff in this reaction. 😂 I love this movie! It was one of Robin Wright’s first films. She was mostly known for the soap opera Santa Barbara. It was a big deal when she was cast in this movie at the time.
High on crack as always.
I think it was her first movie. I watched her on Santa Barbara and was glad to see her make movies.
I read it and the fart story was hilarious!
This is a classic for me. I watched this a lot whenever I stayed home sick from school growing up.
Aw, you kept the tradition alive of following the story when you were sick? 😊
I’m so glad this movie holds up, it was such a favorite as a kid
I think the reason Buttercup doesn't recognize Westley is because she thought he was dead so she wouldn't be like oh you look my dead crush.
And for her it's been five years, and he definitely is not acting like the farm boy she remembers. He is not the same. In a weird way, she may be more perceptive than we are because even though he looks the same, he isn't the same.
He also barely talked to her lol besides as you wish and she probably didn’t recognize his voice.
That and the tan from living on a ship, a mustache, the mask, the changed physique from all the sword fighting and other labor he's done.
The swordfighting trainer that taught all the actors was the same one for Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings.
Also great in A Few Good Men!
Merry knew who Eowyn was too.
actor recommendation: Nicolas cage
First movie: moonstruck
Top tier romance movie from late 80s early 90s
Prince Humperdinck is Chris Sarandon who was the lead vampire in the original Fright Night.
Princess Buttercup & Westleys true love story is iconic.
He was also in Stranger Things.
Wait wait wait, he's never seen Forrest Gump?! Pls do a reaction!
FR How is that even possible?! I'd love to see that reaction!
Bryce's reactions are always so fun to watch haha
This has always been my family’s movie to quote all the time! It’s probably the movie I can remember the most quotes from. Amazing!
Mandy Patinkin plays Inigo, and he’s also known for his role on Criminal Minds as Gideon!
He’s also on TikTok & is just the sweetest & coolest guy!
19:00 Perspective illusion! Right when Westley is about to charge Fezzig, he seems just as tall, but he is uphill from Fezzig. When he charges downhill and rams into Fezzig, we can see their true difference in size. Fezzig is a good foot taller than Westley.
The actor who plays Vizzini (Wallace Shawn) is also the voice of Rex the Dinosaur in Toy Story ☺️🦖
And clueless
If I may, Stardust is a MUST WATCH for fantasy on the channel 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 you won’t be disappointed
Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck) is also the speaking voice for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas
'Safe in the fire swamp does not sound correct'. Ten points to Ravenclaw 😂
One of my favourite movies that I love seeing reactors watch for the first time. It’s always so funny and makes for a great commentary
Cary Elwes "Wesley" was in a movie called "Lady Jane" with Helena Bonham Carter based on the real life story of the Queen of England who only lasted 9 days on the throne. Excellent movie. I would love to see you guys react to that.
What, Humperdinck? Humperdinck! ! Humperdinck!! Humperdink!!!!
Love your reactions!
Parts where you’re bored, and when you’re not.
You guys seem “real-time” genuine to me! 😄
We *ALWAYS* say "It's possible...pig." Our favorite quote!
This movie is labeled a fantasy adventure comedy film.
Well now you have to watch saw to see Wesley again 😂
Thank goodness you guys watched this and now you'd understand Ted Lasso's references to this movie!
You guys should watch a movie called Seven brides for seven brothers! Its an amazing movie!!
"He was blaving!" XD
Ommmggg! I love this movie sm. It’s one of my absolute favorite/comfort movies from childhood ❤
Do you guys know who Fred Savage is?
I'm guessing no
no scene has ever made me laugh as hard as the falling down the hill scene did
I love how it’s such an unserious movie and probably one of the best rom com romantasies ever lol, so good and def gives me Monty python with a romance angel I love it 😂
For a great Billy Crystal movie, I recommend City Slickers. It’s a comedy adventure.
My favorite movie growing up.
EDIT: "Hahaha the worst she can say is no"
This is one of my favorite movies. The lead, Wesley, is also the lead in Men In Tights which is a Robin Hood comedy.
The boy being read to is Fred Savage, who is in The Wonder Years show. He's been in other things as an adult too, usually plays an a-hole. lol
21:12 lol Right?? That could be the entire battle of wits: here, smell this…Vizzini dies instantly 😄
The Grandfather was played by Actor Peter Falk who is mainly remembered as TV's Lt. Columbo.
I love this movie so much that I handmade an exact replica of Princess Buttercup's red riding dress so that I could wear it. 😅
Cary Elwes was the mayor of Hawkins in Stranger Things.
I always end up mixing up some scenes from the princess bride and Monty python! 😂
So excited! One of my fav movies growing up!
Both great films!!!!
Ya’ll always come in clutch when I need a movie reaction to watch
The sword master who choreographed these scenes was the sword master for Errol Flynn’s films, and the Lord of the Rings films.
During the 1960s there was a British singer who had many hits, almost as popular as Tom Jones, named Englebert Humperdinck.
25:55 he was being so weird because he was pretending to be the most evil and deadly pirate in the world
I'll never get used to reactors saying 'jeeze, that's so old' to movies that came out when I was in college. I never though being in my 50s was 'old', but I get it. In the 80's movies from the 40's were 'old' to me. You'll feel exactly the same if you're lucky enough to get here! 🤣 Hope you watch some genuinely 'old' films. I recommend starting with 'Casablanca'.
You really should do more eighties movies. Some of the things won't be PC, but there are a lot of gems.
yessss!! they should react to The Goonies
Hey rob, you mentioned your favourite scene is the sword fight on the rock, there a UA-cam video from Jill Bearup that does a fantastic breakdown of the technical elements and the choreography and it's def worth the watch!
yall this has been my favorite movie since i was 3 years old so excited to see this reaction!!!
