Delighted to learn I've been a 'computer expert' since 2000, when I googled my first PC problem. Yes, getting smart at net search strings is key. Everything you described, I've done. I'm sure I'm one of multitudes that learned this themselves, so I don't feel too special, but the validation is nice.
Yep lol I'm thinking the exact same thing right now. This is a great video and he's 100% on point, but sadly if I sent this to my mother she would still find it too difficult to grasp. The idea of taking personal agency over fixing a technical error is so foreign to that generation it really is appropriate to call it "technophobia". They come from the days before microchips & sophisticated redundancies & throttling methods used in almost every electronic component today. They literally feel like pressing the wrong button will cause combustion - as I'm sure this was more of a commonplace thing when not using rudimentary electronics of the past correctly. It's very difficult these days to irreversibly damage your electronics by pressing the wrong buttons or giving it the wrong commands.
Hey Joe, I'm a retired computer/IT person, Yet I still find your vids so informative and straight forward. Thanks for your advise and helping the people...........Great work and love watching.
fact of the day: antidepressants cause lower iq, you arent supposed to do that, the brain is so damn complicated you cant just do that whats wrong with you
I've been trying to learn programming on my own. A lot of these tips also apply to learning to code. I've seen WAY more error messages lately than I would like to.
This is the reason my friends/family can't figure out why I fix problems in person and not over the phone. Really helps to be looking at the problem to collect the data to Google, lol.
I've never worked in tech, beyond a stint as a retail tech salesperson in a chain called 'Dick Smith' in Australia. But I'm often the person my friends and family go to for tech help. Never been trained, just had 'a knack' for problem solving. Step 1: Yep, I do that first every time. Step 2: Yep, and your descriptions of what to Google look exactly like what I Google. Step 3: Mess with stuff until it works, yes! I love how you described the process though, that's also what I do. It's amazing how much intuition goes into this.
Great video! I been a A+ technician for 20+ years. You hit the nail on the head on what we got taught years ago. When Windows XP was the newest OS coming out and still learning our skills on Windows 95, 98, and ME.
Hi I want to become a technician and sell parts and all of that I I'm trying to teach myself on parts and I'm new do you know what I should research on?
My friend who is the 'Computer magician' told me the same thing you told us. 'Google is your friend' I think it was his way of saying 'Don't bother me anymore'.
This video has put into words a lot of concepts that I’ve had a hard time explaining to my parents and siblings, as the main provider of tech support of the household
On the topic of turning it off a back on again when it comes to Windows... Because of Fast Startup, Windows doesn't restart the kernel when you click "Shutdown", where if you select "Restart", it actually will shutdown and restart the kernel. Sometimes Windows needs that kernel refresh to work properly.
I'm also a tech support expert and I knew everything you said already but you missed a couple of things: 1- you should've pointed out to the voice search feature. I use it a lot when I can't copy-paste because it's faster and I like it, but many people (from the average joes) don't even know this feature exists! 2- and this is really very important and you should've DEFINITELY mentioned it, which is using tricks like the "quotation marks" and more importantly the minus - to exclude search results that are talking about something else and thus significantly narrowing down the results. This "minus" trick can really be helpful. 3- Also the "find" trick (ctrl+f) in a web page is really helpful if there's a lot of text and it would take you years to find what you're looking for in that specific web page
Sometimes, the error message will tell you exactly what the problem is and how to fix it. I have been called to help people countless times. When I show up, I say, "have you tried"... then read the error message verbatim. They say, "no I didn't try that". Then I say, "why don't you go ahead and try that". Then they try it, and their problem is solved.

First, I am sharing this video with everyone in my family and many of my friends. This should free up some of my time. And, second, how about making this an app. As a long time computer user, I have always been frustrated that MS did not provide a Copy button on their error message. That would be the first task of the app. Then, using the pertinent info from the error message, do a Google search. And, finally, give the user a form to add the additional information that you mention. This would be a great boon to the computer user world. Keep up the good work.
In case of the television (or any piece of tech with proprietary coding really) if you did not find a solution, look up what other brands might use the same firmware as your brand and use that in your search. (If memory serves, Technik is practically a JVC for example.) It might yield results.
Great content! Also important: don't worry you might break something! Just assume you won't, and if you should, it's reversible in almost any case. What also helps this mindset is renaming files/folders the recommended solution supposes you delete, and copy (backup) files you're supposed to change. You'll be a lot more confident "playing" with your computer on this level :)
Really great video! Yes, these actually are professional tips. I have been working in IT support for 20 years and I can tell you that this troubleshooting methodology is the way to go. It works for any kind of problem and makes troubleshooting effective and structured.
Thank you so much for this video! Even if I have knowledge to troubleshoot, this is already a helpful reference to people I know that can't troubleshoot themselves.
You are so correct. I have solved many a computer problem using a google search. And, yes. The first thing to do is to power off, then restart. Most of the time, it works, on all electronic devices.
I have to admit (as Sysadmin) this Video is full of useful tips for non tech people and beginners 😉👍 But i still have some Google Tips for you 😉: You can exclude phrases by placind a "-" before it ( Problem -WLAN for example) if you already know it can't have to do with your problem... Everything including that phrase won't show up anymore! Second: You can require a word/phrase to be EXACTLY included by using "" (Problem "model" for example) everything that doesn't exactly include that word won't Show up! Third: you can combine these functions to exclude not just a Single word but entire phrases with spaces in them (Problem -"Audio Device") incase of a Audio Problem where you know the device itself is fine... There are even more of these functions (why not try googeling for them as Exercise 😉) Good day ya all 🖐️
I think I already do this. I'm glad to know I'm on the right track! I'd like to add that when I find fixes on the internet, part of my searching will be to check that the fixes are legit and won't cause even more problems.
Really good video, these are things that can be very intuitive for some people but for others its not so straight forward. However, I think you should have brought up "Event Viewer". It's a bit more advanced and not useful for every scenario, but for certain things it can be an invaluable resource. I've used it to solve more than a handful of problems over the years. It pretty much gives you a play by play of every connection, process or whatever is going on with your system, and marks errors and hiccups very clearly. Then you can right click it, select "search online" and find out exactly what that error or warning is related to and if there's a fix for it.
I was desk-side support for over 20 yrs. for the government. This Chip brought back a lot of memories. At one point I was call reboot. Because if you call me, that is what I would tell you to do before anything else. By the way that would fix 60 to 70% of the problems. Then the ones that called back, I would work. Thanks, Love the show.
Being a computer diagnostics, repair and networking tech this is spot on. I remember fixing an issue with MS Office that I found on a message board for furniture.
Seriously, fantastic video with some solid advice. I'm far from being any kind of expert, just a curious enthusiast on my free time. Watching the video it felt like you were describing me 😂. This is more or less how I have been dealing with things in the past few years, each time learning something new. Great job!
You didn't talk about exact: - Googling text match searches by enclosing a phrase in double quotes, which can be useful to find the exact phrase (error message), not just a bunch of pages containing (largely) the same words - "do not find" terms. You should be able to put a minus in front of the words you don't want, e.g.: windows -microsoft Though it seems that this particular example doesn't work. It does seem to work for other terms, though.
Omitting stuff is important, especially because games and products have begun running our of original names and you have to specify like "ruby -gemstone" or something like that to not a ton of irrelevant hits.
The good thing about software issues is that, you can do bunch of stuffs and won't damage the hardware itself - well assuming you already have backed up all your files, and the troubleshooting won't go beyond software issues.
Sad to admit this but yup... Just needed to pat myself on the back a little. I needed a boost after I lost 45 minutes of editing work because I forgot to save.
In addition to the "Have you tried turning it off and back on again", another little gem of advice is this: Have the confidence that you know better than almost anyone how your computer usually behaves. And so if it starts showing any random behavior or pattern of behaving in a new or unusual way, don't go on ignoring it thinking it will be ok. It will probably crash sooner or later. Of course, you wont always get warning signs, but when you do get signs, take them seriously. Save your work and re-boot it.
Ngl, this was the best video by far, everything was literally on point, the examples, the google search bar and everything was explained so nicely that i had no confusion whatsoever. Waaaaay better than i could do lol. Ofc whatever Joe said, i knew everything but i just watched it incase there is something i didn't know.. Great vid Joe! And no i didn't comment this just to get the pin (if i get it), it was literally a flawless vid
Wish you would do more parody video 😂 they are comedy gold, I know you’ve quit parodies mostly but even if they were once a couple of months it would be amazing!
Thio, good guide. What you were describing is called issue triangulation. Try to isolate where the problem is which usually gives you the fix. There is one item you left out of the Google search parameters. In order to narrow down your search add the word "solved" at the end. HTH...
Wayyyyy back in the early 1990's, when I was an amateur computer geek working at JPL, the "powers that be" thought I knew what I was doing and yanked me from my workaday assignment and put me in with another group of similar "computer gurus." (DOS 3, 4, and 5 days... morphing to primitve Windows, with UNIX and Apple OS tossed in). I remember having to "do my time" on the help desk. "Me? Help someone when they called? What do I know?" Starting from "zero knowledge," we used our callers as guinea pigs and began building the knowledge and tricks we used to keep our fledgling network ("the year of the network!") up and running as computers became better and more powerful. We created a case numbering system and began a simple flat file database where we could record the problems and solutions. But it all worked much like your three-step method -- albeit with only our in-house info to help us! We struggled and survived and finally surmounted virtually all of the problems we encountered growing our grass-roots network -- writing down and sharing our solutions. Eventually, we were subsumed in a larger JPL effort. But those early "seat of your pants" days were exciting and educational. Thanks for the video! Worked then, and it works now.
TJ is a treasure, very intelligent and posseses more pedagogic than most fast ramblers (ok he talk quite fast too). Also have some odd but good subjects. This one for example kinda confirm my own thoughts or plain unexplainable ways i think within myself
an addition for the first one. you want 4 things. the first 3 aswell as windows version/linux distro/mac whatever. while not always needed sometimes fixes only work on windows or only work on arch etc etc. while not nessesary all of the time if something doesnt seem to be working add that in too.
If you get an error dialog, if you CTRL + C on the active error dialog, it copies the error contents to clipboard, then you can paste it into notepad & copy/paste the part that would make a good google search.
As a computer tech, I use the 3 Rs. Retry, restart/reboot, and re-install. Sometimes a bit more complicated in my experience. When asked what is the most important tool for a computer technician I always say "Google"
I know a far amount about computers. I am in school for Web Development and I can tell you the actual names of some of the ports and connections for the computer. But, I can always learn more.
Remember when restarting Windows 10 actually clicking Restart (not shut off and starting it manually), because the standard shut off often does a 'soft' shut off, which keeps the state of all programs and therefore usually doesn't fix the problem.
The thing I like about solving most technical problems is that they often don't require actual technical knowledge. Sure, a minimum of knowledge is greatly helpful but one doesne't have to be an expert by any means. An amateur is sufficient. Solving a tech problem is almost always simply applying simple logic and common sense. The reason why most people can't solve them is because well... they aren't familiar with those simple tips in your video :D
These tips are the basics for overcoming software and certain hardware problems. I have not to use these tips very often because my computer works well as well-oiled machine.
I had a computer shop from '94 to '02, win 3.1 to win 95. At first there was no googling, I had to do trial and error. While I had hourly service charge I realized I could not charge more than the customer could pay. Googling was gradually more useful. I learned a lot but it was painful. The worst part was everything changed so fast. It was at least an experience in business.
Also a tip on Googling, try adding 'reddit' at the end if you can't find it, Google doesn't index reddit well and it's a good way to find (especially more obsecure) troubleshooting.
Lol this is exactly my methods. Everyone thinks I'm a computer expert, but I'm really just good at googling and knowing if something will help or not. It's all about them keywords and format.
perfect, Could I add one more hint? Forum, join specialized foruns and post problems that you have but you couldn't find a proper solution, there is a huge community of great people sharing knowledge, sometimes I post solutions even without any question about that "x" subject.

- "do not find" terms. You should be able to put a minus in front of the words you don't want, e.g.: windows -microsoft
Though it seems that this particular example doesn't work. It does seem to work for other terms, though.
Omitting stuff is important, especially because games and products have begun running our of original names and you have to specify like "ruby -gemstone" or something like that to not a ton of irrelevant hits.
While I already knew all of this, this is now super helpful to send to anyone that asks me for tech support. Thank you.
Ive been doing this for 17 years now. :)
The good thing about software issues is that, you can do bunch of stuffs and won't damage the hardware itself - well assuming you already have backed up all your files, and the troubleshooting won't go beyond software issues.
I am now a tech expert and it only took me 13 minutes and 55 seconds
very congrats
Well doen!
👏👏👏
Nice 👍
who else is also just watching this to get the satisfaction of "hmm yes im an expert, i know all this"?
Sad to admit this but yup... Just needed to pat myself on the back a little. I needed a boost after I lost 45 minutes of editing work because I forgot to save.
nice bit of history that is still true today about floppy A and B drives; and thank you for the refresher on mount points
“All fonts turning into papyrus” lol
Nyeh heh heh i guess...
"Google It"
Google has been my best friend for computer maintenance for years.
Does this work in India?
Ngl, this was the best video by far, everything was literally on point, the examples, the google search bar and everything was explained so nicely that i had no confusion whatsoever. Waaaaay better than i could do lol. Ofc whatever Joe said, i knew everything but i just watched it incase there is something i didn't know.. Great vid Joe! And no i didn't comment this just to get the pin (if i get it), it was literally a flawless vid
Wish you would do more parody video 😂 they are comedy gold, I know you’ve quit parodies mostly but even if they were once a couple of months it would be amazing!
I agree ! I have also kept his "Madman" vids to play over to make me laugh.
@@robertcroft8241 👍
Merry Christmas, ThioJoe.
i found your emoji: 🤔
You Sir are brilliant. What a great teacher you are! For some reason I stopped getting automatic notification of your new videos.
4.point "ask reddit"
I m glad I already knew most of those. Keep up the good work.
I’m ready to be the best
Thio, good guide. What you were describing is called issue triangulation. Try to isolate where the problem is which usually gives you the fix. There is one item you left out of the Google search parameters. In order to narrow down your search add the word "solved" at the end. HTH...
I just came to check you started click baiting again 😂!!
Yeh he is the weirdest legend ever who fooled everyone partially into IT when we were young
Worked then, and it works now.
yeah some comment about being so early
TJ is a treasure, very intelligent and posseses more pedagogic than most fast ramblers (ok he talk quite fast too).
Also have some odd but good subjects.
This one for example kinda confirm my own thoughts or plain unexplainable ways i think within myself
As an enthusiast, i appreciate that you made this video!
an addition for the first one. you want 4 things. the first 3 aswell as windows version/linux distro/mac whatever. while not always needed sometimes fixes only work on windows or only work on arch etc etc. while not nessesary all of the time if something doesnt seem to be working add that in too.
Love your videos! Am a daily viewer and will always continue watching! Keep it up!
I just googled everything and it works!
I've only been doing this since DOS 1.0 Thanks for all the new information!
Google serch, didn't uhhh... whatever
This is a really good video that indeed could help a lot of people that don't know or are afraid to try and fix the problem themselves!
But, I can always learn more.
dude i miss your jokes, your internet upgrade videos were unique, your explanation of what ruler is still makes me cry...
@ThioJoe my sensei to all things tech & problem solving.🤘🤘🙏👍🏼👍🏼
I’m so glad I looked this up now and not three weeks ago🙌🏻
Remember when restarting Windows 10 actually clicking Restart (not shut off and starting it manually), because the standard shut off often does a 'soft' shut off, which keeps the state of all programs and therefore usually doesn't fix the problem.
You are so awesome! Many tricks saved my time!
You cant believe any videos of thio joe prior to 2016
These tips are the basics for overcoming software and certain hardware problems.
Dude I agree! Reddit got quite the things!
Bitdefender, something which finally is not a scam and actually has nice signatures for virus detection
Great video! Not exactly what I was looking for but definitely picked up a few things by watching it. Thank you sir. 👍💻
