One thing I did when my sciatica started was, I stopped eating sugar, I think stopping sugar reduced the inflammation.

I’ve been trying to find out this information for so long! Amazing to me that you can see a doctor or Chiropractor and pay such a lot of money for their service and they don’t care enough to stay up on correct information or whatever their reasons are. I inherently know that I have to be doing exercises but I also know there are some I shouldn’t be doing and didn’t know which ones were safe. I’ve been seeing a Chiropractor for 6 months. I’ve asked him more than once aren’t there exercises I should be doing and all he said were 2 that you are saying I shouldn’t do. He said to put my leg over my knee and stretch it toward my head and I do that all the time! Now I know not to. And he told me to walk so I started walking and not long after I got almost totally chair bound. I can’t walk now more than 15-20 steps before the pain gets unbearable. I limp around the house doing my chores looking like I messed my pants or something! Then I went to a Physiatrist and the MRI found a facet cyst so I got 2 steroid injections in my spine. He is a sports medicine doctor and supposedly treats to avoid surgery but never once told me to do any exercises and I was hoping he would send me for PT. I can’t even get the office to call me back and tell me what to do next! So I guess I’m on my own. It is infuriating. I’ve suffered for 6 months and can’t do anything anymore and it just feels like nobody cares except my friends and family who can’t help me. I’m glad I found you and have already started doing the exercises you recommend. Thank you so much, Dr. David!

PT didn't have anything to say one way or another when I showed him these videos. He simply said, in essence, different strokes for different folks. My words but basically the same message. Unfortunately I ended up in the ER with strong meds for three days after suffering for a week.

This is my personal experience with the sciatica pain, although, one could call it just a theory. I have constipation partly caused by the treacherous path in my lowest digestive tract. This was my gastroenterologist’s finding. So, whenever my lowest digestive tract is almost empty, my sciatica pain goes away quite significantly. I will do your suggested things to avoid aggravating nerves and muscle strengthening exercises to help further. Thanks doc!

Yes, my experience backs up what you said. I suffered with sciatica for over a year, getting injections n doing nerve flossing n stretching i learned from my pts. Then i heard another pt say to stop stretching n flossing angry nerves. I stopped, swam n walked in therapy pool, did squats to strengthen my glutes n abs, n ny sciatica is 95% gone. I sleep on my side with thick pillow betweeen my legs, too. The only massage i get is triggerpoint in surrounding muscles, not near sciatic nerve.

I like the comment about different strokes for different folks, as I do gentle, brief yoga along with some of the exercises you recommend, Dr. David, and that combination has been working for me. I find that if I don't stretch at all, my sciatica gets worse. I need a reasonable amount in order for my body to not seize up completely.

streching can reduce the pain temporarily but often makes thing worse on long term. what makes the pain go away is strongening the muscles which doesnt happen over a day of course, its a process of months the very least. The problem with streching is, a very flexible muscle is not as firm and stable. Meaning they dont keep the bones where they need to be when you move. Streching is not inherintly bad but ONLY if you are strengthening the muscles so much that even with streching they stay super firm.

    • @paillette42

@@yagzyalcntas553 Yes, which is precisely why I said I did very gentle, not extreme, yoga ALONG WITH strengthening exercises--I am quite aware that too much stretching is not a good thing in my case.

I had planta fasciitis and UA-cam doctors recommend type A stretching. People also recommend expensive sandals. Then, I went to see a doctor and she referred me the physiotherapist. But I had to wait to physiotherapist to call me because the slots were full in that month. So, the doctor gave me on pamphlet. She told me to do those simple exercises (three) first. Then, friend bought two pairs of cheap rubber sandals for me. And my planta fasciitis was gone before the physiotherapist called me. The pamphlet didn't teach any stretching.

Great advice. I did the stretching & it became worse. Got numbness on foot & used soft rubber ball to massag it and it was worse. Lying on back too much for rest...any wonder I feel worse as time has gone by. Sleeping can be tricky because you might move & wake up with more pain because of your poor positions.

I had the pain in my right hip and I tried lying on my side left side with a pillow between my legs. for the first night on using the pillow it worked. the next day I did stretches and the pain got worse. Lying on my back with a pillow beneath my head was the only relief I got.

I recently made tremendous progress by learning to use very gentile massage.
I have been using topicals, often after ice, to help get rid of my sciatica. It worked, but progress was slow. Now recently, i found that after applying the topical(such as magnesium oil or cdb cream) i can dip my hand in water and rub it on top of the oil that has been worked in. This makes for a much more slippery surface so that i can use much less pressure and cover much more area. Huge improvement.
Not sure how it will work out long term, but so far, am very impressed.

I was dealing with bilateral sciatica this past winter. The DPT put me on a regimen of no golf, strengthening exercises and what I think you’d call stretches. After intervals of multiple weeks in which he added and subtracted the exercises I gradually started hitting balls. After about 4 months of treatment, daily exercises and easy swinging, I am back to playing golf 3/4 times a week. I sleep on my back with my legs raised to relieve low back pressure. I have some discomfort in the low back in the AM, but nothing compared to what was going on this past fall and winter. It goes away as I move around and do the routine we settled on. Thanks!

I do slerp on my side, most nights...as is suggested ; .. I've not ever been a " stomach sleeper ", but with that said... I discovered that sleeping in a " halfway side/ part on my stomach ( same side ) with very flat pillow under part of that area" made a difference in my sleep. ... I sleep better and dont wake up 2 - 3 times a night trying to feel comfortable. Is this a normal thing, with this position.? Lol.
I'm not sure I'm explaining it correctly, and I know it sounds ' odd ", but I found it helps my quality of sleep. I don't sleep like this every night, just when I'm really feeling more pain than usual.

Thanks ductor. I am 52 the first and only time until nor i suffered with sciatica was 30 years ago during my last pregnancy. That's when i discovered Chiropractic care. Not knowing i had been dealing with it for 3 months I experienced the most excruciating pain during non medicated, natural labor. Imagine that aggrevation of the nerve HOLY COW. When I couldn't sit on my bottom or walk after 10 days following my baby's birth I need something was wrong and so much the only thing my Midwife could recommend was to see a chiropractor it was my first time and as soon as I walked in the clinic they already knew what was wrong with me, I was amazed! And even more amazing that I was adjusted and walked out as if nothing was wrong with me!
Well, I don't know what has triggered it now but I have done the stretches you are referring to, all 3. I'm a back and a side sleeper. I've even practiced yoga that targets the hips and sciatica particularly. I absolutely am more mobile and wake up with less or no pain. For me, these exercises have improved me meanwhile i am able go for an adjustment. $$✨️

Please can you assist me with the link for the guide book you have mentioned above "10 tips to avoid Sciatica pain." I have been suffering from excruciating pains from Sciatica since 28th August and I feel suicidal. I have been asking my GP to help me and refer me to a physiotherapist and I had an appointment on 2nd October but the physio didn't do anything and didn't show me any exercises either. I looked up on the NHS website but most of the exercises are in fact the stretches which you have mentioned in your UA-cam videos to avoid and my Sciatica pain has been getting worse day by day that I have been crying in pain day and night not able to cope with life anymore as I live all by myself with no help around and struggling to even walk to the washroom which I have to frequently visit every hour so my entire past 3 months have been in excruciating pain. I just came across your UA-cam videos coincidentally and what you have been advising to do and avoid makes so much sense as you explain so well. Please can you kindly send me the above mentioned guide by post to England if it's possible or email it to me?
I am not sure if you are based in the USA or Canada but I wouldn't mind even travelling to come and see you just so that I can be treated for this miserable and debilitating pain that I'm suffering from.

      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  7 місяців тому +6

Hello Johanna, excellent question! It's crucial to recognize that Dr. David's methods are specialized and differ from the traditional practices in the field. Some physical therapists may hold different opinions and not align with these approaches.
In typical training, Physical Therapists learn post-surgery treatment. At El Paso Manual Physical Therapy, we advocate for surgery as the last resort, prioritizing addressing the root cause, often a muscle imbalance, for most injuries.
Ideally, patients would have this information sooner, acknowledging the flaws in the medical field. We understand the frustration amid vast and contradictory information. Patients should advocate for themselves, exploring various techniques and exercises to find what suits them best.

Hey Tami, sciatic nerve pain is more of a symptom that stems from a root problem. You can differentiate joint issues through imaging studies, but most of these issues come from a common underlying muscle imbalance anyways.
Our suggestion is to go through these couple of playlists and use the information and exercises to improve your glute and ab strength:

Could you talk about what to do with the side that is not painful? I am suffering from sciatica for the third time in my life. First time I was 14, second time I was 27, now I'm 33. The only difference is that the first two times I suffered sciatica on the right, and now on the left. What I have found out that it is the OTHER side that has stiff muscles. (In my case the SI joint is very immobile. Which does add up the imbalance of the pelvis/lower body that you mention in other videos). Ofcourse, the side that suffers from sciatica pain has an extremely stiff muscle that is pinching my nerve, but it is the other side that feels much more stiff. I use a foam roller on my OTHER side, not the side that is super painful. Most of the exercises that I do aim for both sides. I do agree that stretching makes things worse, for me even on the short term it is only painful, not relieving anything. The only thing I do is 'move the muscle to the point it starts stretching', basically to simply move my body. When I lay on my back, I always use a pillow under my knees.

Hey Christa, we are so sorry to hear you have dealt with sciatica and SI joint issues for this long :-( Foam rolling and light stretching can provide some temporary relief. However, this still doesn't address the underlying muscle imbalance, which is why we must look for ways to strengthen these underdeveloped muscles. We'd like to share a couple of playlists with you, these contain all of our videos on sciatica and SI joint exercises and approaches:

Main pain is the knee😢. I get pain in my hamstrings and the yoga moves, help me.
Lying on my stomach helps relieve the pain and move better and feel better.
Lying on my back also helps. But not to sleep. Problems occur from sitting on my bed. 😢

Hey Joan, We understand how frustrating it can be with all the information that is out there. It can be overwhelming and oftentimes contradictory. One thing to consider is that at El Paso Manual Physical Therapy we specialize in helping people avoid unnecessary injections & surgery while traditional physical therapy tends to focus on healing post surgery. Because of this, the information we provide will be different versus traditional physical therapy advice. Also, everyone's body composition is different so what works for one person may not work for another. What's important is finding options that work for you as you know your body better than anyone. In order to find a solution you may need to try different techniques and exercises that you find beneficial.
In case you would like to attempt any of the exercises and stretches that we recommend, we have a Sciatica Help playlist that you may find beneficial. It includes exercises and tips that could help alleviate your symptoms.
      "Sciatica Pain Exercises and Stretches"
      ua-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR.html
Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
Inversion Tables can also be very beneficial to sciatica symptoms. We have a video discussing how it can be used for back pain. We highly recommend researching Inversion Tables to see if it might be a good option for you.
“Is an Inversion Table Helpful for Back Pain?”
      ua-cam.com/video/j61ImGQdFTM/v-deo.html
Additionally, our 28-Day Back Health and Wellness Program might be helpful for managing your sciatica. This program is designed to improve back health and could be a great resource for you.
