There is no secret weapon, there is only kung fu (hard work). I remember seeing this in the 80's during the Kung Fu theater broadcasts on Saturdays.

My sifu, RALPH MITCELL From Brooklyn. New York, was a disciple of this great master. I trained under SIFU Mitchell, regrets and one of my greatest regrets was my inability to learn the southern, praying mantis system from him. I didn’t have the aptitude for it, but what I did learn from him and other systems, I appreciate and cherish.

Yes, I remember Sifu Ralph Mitchell from BK, he competed in Sifu Wai Hong's full contact tournament in Chinatown. Do you remember Hui Chamberlain too?

Very cool. I remember reading about him in the late seventies and early eighties. This is the first documentary I can recall that got the correct definition of kung fu, and chi. We practice one form of northern Praying Mantis, the "stomping form". Thanks for sharing. Instant sub.
Sifu Gin Foon Mark September 14, 1927---December 19, 2018 RIP
    Keep practice. All the best.

Interesting and worthwhile video. I occasionally visited Gin-Foon Mark's kung fu studio when I lived in Minneapolis in 1976. As I recall, he also owned a Chinese restaurant. His studio also had the barrels with beans, etc., for teaching tiesha zhang (iron sand palm).

Amazing where life takes us. I think there's some old footage of Sifu in NY's Chinatown in demos at the tongs or Associations. Even read he taught at one. Back then you can go to the tong your family was a member and can learn. There were schools all over Chinatown. Now the land of Target has him. Go figure. You guys are fortunate. In one generation the culture is almost gone.

Those were the days when we believed all this hype. Size, strength, pure fitness and controlled aggression count for a lot in a real fight. If you add the discipline of real traditional martial training to that then you may have the full package. But the other factors cannot be ignored. Without size one must train everything else to its fullest extent and test it in real sparring or fights, else saying you do a martial art blah blah is possibly riskier than not doing one at all.

Martial Arts Wisdom has come a very long way. Now that different fighting arts can be tested via MMA fights, we know that these traditional Kung Fu guys get destroyed by versatile fighters that also know boxing grappling and wrestling. These old school kung fu guys often get destroyed within minutes with a well rounded MMA beast.
With all that said, these arts do also deserve respect and understanding of gathering Chi has many amazing benefits. If you want to practice this kind of traditional methods for personal satisfaction, for calm health building and ability to defend yourself from the average untrained person, sure, this is a worthy pursuit. Just don't think you'll be a top level fighter because you won't.

一山還有一山高,強中自有強中手(Mountains beyond mountains, People beyond people.)Will anyone in this world declare he or she can be a top level fighter? Can a light weight champion be a top level fighter when facing among those heavyweight fighters? Not every one is the same and whether can be a top level fighter is not the style he learned but the person himself or herself. Can every one of the same styles of those MMA could be a top level fighter?

You realize those MMA guys train like 8-10 hours a day 5-6 days a week on nothing but cardio, basic boxing and grappling, and leg kicks right? Traditional martial arts masters trained in the internal mastery of energy flow expressed through their body. I bet if an MMA guy tried mugging one of those masters on the street it would be a different story.

absolutely misguided thought, no true insight . mma is sport true Kung fu was a martial art used on the battlefield to kill enemy soldiers. Boys seldom grasp what older men have done.

    • @banzavatoka5929

Only restrictive parts of "martial arts" as you want to call it get tested in MMA which is sports. Chinese combat arts can not be correctly tested or verified in the ring. We see MMA fighters get beaten up in the street by untrained individuals. MMA in sports in no greater than NFL in teaching one about the realities of street violence. You make such a bold statement about chi with your limited understanding of the topic. You need to experience internal explosive power to know it. And there are humble Kung Fu practitioners out there who could shut out the life in a person just with one move. No one has the right to take out the life of another human so we all remain quite. The whole caliber of a true system in hand to hand combat and weaponry have already been tested and verified in centuries of wars in China.
