- After some strange stuttering and surging, it was time to replace the fuel filter(s) in this badboy. Turns out to be a reasonably simple job, but does raise some questions!

I just completed following your excellent tutorial 👍. Thank you so much Master Nerb! The screws alongside the pump & grounding the wires were locked but some WD40 and penetrant helped unlock them. I trust the new fuel filters will solve my stuttering full throttle.
Nice video. I especially like what you have done to eliminate that very frustrating three prong electrical plug. Thanks. I feel a bit embarased because when I suspected fuel problems, I opened it like you did, cleaning the filter bag, but I was unaware that there was a removable filter in the top part...hahaha... Guess I will have to take it apart again soon as a precaution. Thanks for a super informative and strangely captivating video.

Just changed the filters in a 990 with 45000 km. Same pump. The top filter had fallen apart. Also some of the o-rings & rubber bits had deteriorated some what. Glad I got a full kit & not just the filters. Left the tank sealing o-rings but after a longer time/mileage do the lot. Find that plug & other plugs on the bike awkward.

Just wanted to say thanks for an informative and also funny 'how to'. I just followed your guide and successfully changed the fuel pump filters on my 2009 RC8R (exact same pump by the look of it). I also hate that stupid f***ing white triangular connector and swapped mine for a superseal as well; what an improvement. Cheers

I think it is safer to have the electrical connectors submerged in the fuel rather than have it somewhere out, as petrol is not very conductive and won't spark, secondly the fuel air mixture is much more prone to ignition.
You are right. But what happens when you are almost out of fuel and the pump is mostly not submerged? Im sure its all fine, as most vehicles have this type of pump now, but its still interesting to me ;)

Great video. Really helped me get this done on my own. Except...I would suggest one modification that if I did when I changed the filters last year, I would have saved myself some grief and expense. There is a tube inside the tank that leads to the petcock on the fuel pump side of the tank. When putting the pump back in the tank, if you orient one of the clips in line with that tube, it can easily loosen one of the clips causing the cover over the barrel filter to dislodge and the bike won't start. So the last step I would add to your excellent presentation is when inserting the pump back into the tank, rotate it 90 degrees from the final position then rotate it in place once the pump is seated and before bolting in place. Thanks for the tutorial. The pinch collar on the fuel hose always give me trouble. So far have managed to not break the electrical connector.
I also changed the electrical connector to a super seal plug...that Keihin supplied one is appalling, and only gets worse after a few removals

Nerb, should you use a little petroleum based jelly on the o-ring at the base of the pump where it contacts the tank? I'm waiting on parts to arrive Monday and I'm replacing pump/filters/o-rings.

you are right, petrol is non conductive, but more importantly, ionic substances(salts) will dissolve in it, it is the ions formed from the salts dissolved in water that carry the charge.why did you not flush out your tank while you had it disassembled?

I just came across this video. I recently bought a use 1190 with 14k miles, I heard a lot about the fuel pump issues, I am glad I watched this video because give me an idea what to expect if that happens to me. How often do you need to change the filters? also I know you made this video 6 years ago but what other issues did you have with the bike? do you still have it?
I sold it with 125000km, however I changed the engine at 90,000km. The valves ran out of adjustment and it was cheaper to buy a second hand engine (with 9000km on it) than to do a top end rebuild. It had a few electrical gremlins over its life, but was generally a robust bike (until the valve issue).
This video was the one and only time I took the fuel pump out. Never had an issue with it.

Originally I wanted to to buy a Yamaha Tenere 700 but it's been a hard bike to buy, to much demand and few available, Price of the one you find are way to high, this is my first KTM, I love the bike so far but the reliability is making me feel a bit scared, We'll see how everything goes, hopefully I don't get a lot of issues.
I guess this is what you have to have as a spare part when riding theses bikes? just in case when you're somewhere in the desert :)

Well. Now that I know how to do that, I am going to go down to the KTM dealer with my tools and give it a go. Seeing as I don't have my own to try it on! Do you think they will mind?

I guess the tank don't explode for 2 reasons. 1. There is no oxygen present, and 2 Fuel is non conductive. A spark plug, when submerged in gasoline, wont even generate a spark.
starting with my SMT this filter changing. Which it could be easier :)
Don't forget to clamp fuel line with wires together by strap! Otherwise, the wires will be frayed.

No. It might dry it out a bit, but pretty harmless.

I have a SD 1290 R 2018 an it start to cutting out. I tested the bike a cuple of times and i noticed that It happens just after an hour an a half or two hours of continuos use. I supose just when the pump is hot.
Could be a pump fail or just the filters?
How was the fail on yours?
My odometer is on 8,000 kms.

The pump will either work or completely stop. They dont half fail. It will almost definitely be a filter issue.

XL Adventure Motorcycle Rider ...depends on the location. In the major cities there’s almost never an issue, but in regional areas some of the station operators don’t renew their own filters and separators frequently enough. Station fuel tanks will always get water from condensation, and very occasionally from actual water ingress.
Hi Nerb1! Excellent video! I just purchased the same filter kit for my 1090. I bought it off EBay and I was wondering if that package is the OEM filter kit. I tried to look it up online but I only came across bar codes. I couldn't see any actual box. Also, it only comes with one O-ring, the one that seals the pump in the tank. Is it OK not to replace all the other O-rings since you're in there? Thank you!
Yes, it is the oem filter kit, although I bought it from Greece.
The O-rings will last a long time, but the main one is easily damaged and is the one that will let fuel out of your tank! If you want, its not going to hurt to change all the o-rings, but not 100% necessary imo.
@@Nerb1 Thank you for the fast reply! My bike only has 24,000 km so I'll take my chances then and replace just the filter set and the bottom O-ring. Does the pump require any priming before the first start? Maybe the air needs to be eliminated so it won't damage it?!
@@seabiscuit726142 No. It is totally submersed in your fuel, so by the time you get your tank back on the bike the pump will be full of fuel.

Thanks nerb! My bike just started cutting out on me today. I have 26,000 miles on my 1190 an this is the first time I'll be doing fuel filter. Have you got a place that sells the filters cheap? Most places I've seen say $130ish.

correct. Im now upto 50k and havnt changed it again yet. Probably due though.
Cool. Strangely though, one of the dealers here in India recommends changing it at 8500 km only, for the 390 Duke. Guess business policy.
Nerb1, I think I am having this issue, but everyone who has it mentions not being able to get above 5000rpm. It's the same for me, but when I pull in the clutch I can rev freely. Were you able to as well?
Honestly I cant remember, but its possible. With the clutch in, there's no real load on the motor and it wouldnt take much fuel to rev over 5000rpm. It is simply a fuel restriction and it can affect the bike to varying degrees.
Its not a big job. Just change that filter regardless.

Hi, how long have u been riding the adventure? any major issues with 29,000km on the clock?
+Jaromir Konik I got it new 2 years ago (so only 15k per year). Some minor issues, but nothing serious...this blocked fuel filter, I bent the rear shock bolt and my abs/tcs has turned off a few weeks ago and wont turn back on. I will see what the dealer says at its 30,000 service.
+Nerb1 Sounds like something wrong with brake/ABS/sensor/ECU.
ABS/ESC once totally disabled itself in my car when the battery died, after some diagnosis through the OBD2 port on my laptop I discovered it had somehow changed itself to left hand drive in the CAN-BUS gateway, which had totally confused it. (What helped me find that was that the dual-zone climate controls were also reversed).
+Nerb1 that's not bad...i have 16,5k after 9 months and it's a cracker, love that bike...was just wondering if anything went wrong after 29k, but hope she will keep flying :)

They are... both part # 61007090100. No change from the 2013 1190.
Very nice, thank you. How many miles you got on your 1190r now? I'm getting close to 30,000miles. Recently had what I felt might be a fuel issue at around 8,000 feet bike was cutting out for just a minute, resolved spontaneously so haven't done anything yet. Might be time for a fuel filter change, again thank you.
You are ahead of me. I have 43000km (27,000 miles) on mine. Yes, definitely worth changing the filters.

+Jaromir Konik You can buy them from any KTM dealer, but I got mine through a member on the ADVRider forums. Just go to the big KTM section and search for fuel filters.
