    Just bought a new 1290 SAR five weeks ago. The bike is so amazing it doesn't matter how much time it takes to do any of the maintenance. It's simply worth it. If you really like to tour two-up, sport ride in the twisties, or throw a LOT of dirt off road, it simply can't be beat.

      Doesn't need maintenance??? I must have been misled on my DR650 when I performed maintenance on it. lol

    PING!!, good to see your still hanging around! Do the rest of us a favor and hammer KTM for designing a system that's so complex and over engineered that most dirt particles would give up and find another filter to clog up. Seriously, why is there so many screws and then a quick disconnect "after" you have to pull a fuel line?

    I cant believe ive just been scared off by a filter change. What a pain in the neck. It might as well be a totally dedicated street motocycle

    KTM, what were you thinking when you designed this?

    • @clayderouin857
      @clayderouin857 6 років тому +2

      ya, I agree...it sucks. but you know what? The Africa Twin air filter change is just as bad!!!

    • @robsonenduro3316
      @robsonenduro3316 5 років тому

      they were not thinking.

    • @portlandtwowheels1872

      What was KTM thinking? More towards performance, I'm sure. This is not a difficult task. Take off seat and fairings is hard? No. Not really. Disconnecting some parts of the tank, valves etc then lifting it off? It can be a little tricky if its full of gas. Doing this a few times makes it easier. A lot of bikes require the tank to be removed for air filter maintenance. It's not a big deal. For what I get out of the performance from the 1090r, I'll take this minor inconvenience.

    • @tolga1cool
      @tolga1cool 4 роки тому

      I guess it's a packaging thing. You need a huge ass airbox for emissions and whatnot. Pair that with the LC8's intake trumpet location and the need for a tank and you don't have many other options

      They were thinking of the poor, under worked service department. Cha-ching$

  • @donbus7525
    @donbus7525 6 років тому

    surprisingly even the Africa Twin is easier to do an air filter change. I'm wondering what a KTM shop would charge for this service? Also it still looks like they have not addressed the 8 small bolts sealing off the air box which some have criticized as problematic for dust invasion.

    Awesome video guy as I ponder even more seriously about buying a 1090. Was it so challenging though to get the gas tank back on to have to edit out and fast forward through the swearing and wrench throwing? :)

    • @UPSHIFT_ONLINE
      @UPSHIFT_ONLINE  4 роки тому +2

      It's a simple but long process. A lot of very boring footage. That being said, the 1090 is an awesome machine.

    Hi sir, great video . Thanks for the tips. Quick question with a upper crash bar (such as Outback Mototek), would we need to remove them in order to remove the side fairing ?

    • @UPSHIFT_ONLINE
      @UPSHIFT_ONLINE  5 років тому

      We haven't had to... they can still wiggle out, but it can be easier to remove the upper bar, which is not hard to do, if you are doing a lot of work.

    • @rpfand
      @rpfand 5 років тому

      I just did mine and I have the Outback Mototek upper crash bar and didn't need to remove it there is one torx on either side that is aimed right at the bar, with a little angle it does come out.

    I wonder why the filter even has to be right at the throttle body? Why can’t it be right up in the near cone at the intakes ?

  • @toddbenfield6546

    How often are the intervals if you ride gravel 20% of the time, and in the dust 10% of that. 70% is pavement. Thanks!

    • @paultannahill5043
      @paultannahill5043 3 роки тому

      If you do like I do and make sure to always ride at the front of the pack, you don't have to change/clean your air filter nearly as often as the losers behind you. PRO TIP: make frequent comments to your riding buddies about how complicated and difficult GPS/Navigation is, and they will gladly let you ride up front all the time.

  • @rrandydduke

    And I thought there was too much involved changing the air filter on my AT

  • @brucekendall52
    @brucekendall52 7 років тому +3

    If you do a lot of dirt riding the filter change/cleaning is critical and there fore I will not buy the KTm versus a GS 800/R1200.A GS 800/1200 filter change takes 10 min's max.

  • @srhintz
    @srhintz 3 роки тому +1

    At least it's not complicated or anything.

      if somebody rides this bike off-road often, say in sand then good luck with this procedure every few days...stupid design, really....

  • @brutalblues
    @brutalblues 6 років тому +1

    That's ridiculous!

  • @ThisTall

    A full tank removal just to clean the filter is VERY VERY disappointing !! That’s a full 30 minute job every few days riding gravel.

    • @UPSHIFT_ONLINE
      @UPSHIFT_ONLINE  5 років тому +1

      We have never had to go to that kind of interval even in the dustiest conditions. It's pulling air from a pretty clean source up high and out front. If you were really staying on the wheel of a number of other riders then it does pull in a fair share of dust but so are you and that's no fun. No question it's a chore to change filter though.

    Now I know why the hell they charge so much to do a service on the bike oil change and air filter...OMG!!!

  • @Britishshooter

    Terrible design, WTF were KTM thinking? Serious off roaders need to clean a air filter every ride.

  • @JohnDoe-uc7et

    If my garage will charge more then 100 euro for a air filter change im gonna do it myself. This is KTM's problem not the customer.
