Honestly it's the most mature Harvest Moon game. When it comes to characters/story. It even beats out A Wonderful Life. Everything since HM64 has had this level of, too happy go lucky to be enjoyable. There are no better examples of this than the Fact that Ann is an abusive wife toward Cliff if Ann and Cliff get married in HM64. The fact Karen and her family are literally a train wreck when you're first introduced to them. Marie locked herself into her own closet. The fact that death is dealt with pretty well in HM64 is also quite wonderful. Death is a theme in other HM games definitely AWL, but personally I like how HM64 handled it most. You get to see the emotional train wreck it caused one of the characters after it happened, and how long it took said character to get out of it. Being I recently dealt with the death of my own brother, and it still comes back and haunts me now and then. I'm shocked how well HM64 handled said character's reaction to losing a family member because said character will be cherry then suddenly go all sad face, as something about that cherry moment just brought images of said lost loved one back. Hm64 is one of those games that I want, but also dread the idea of a "Remake." I'm afraid they will make it happy go lucky, and remove the underlying maturity that makes it my favorite game in the entire franchise. And beyond that, just about everything you do in the game gives you some kind of memento reward. Home Decor, presents in your inventory, memories, photos. etc Isn't like those boring SoS Games on the 3DS which you make everything, or worse a New Beginning which the Blacksmith did nothing but sell you blueprints. HM64 is believable, and the game rewards you with memories, and mementos to remember those memories, like a picture on the wall from Marie, a stuffed turtle on the TV, etc etc.
I wish I could have played it back then but N64 cartridges were sooooo expensive where I live. My computer also could not emulate it properly hahaha so I would enter blogs and read reviews while looking at screenshots. It’s a funny sensation to watch a review about it so many years later!
I wish I had grown up with this game, because I think the nostalgia would've helped me appreciate it more. I tried going back to it when I was older (on emulator, unfortunately) and I just couldn't quite get the swing of it? I think the controls weren't mapped well on PC and the time passed SO fast that I felt super rushed every day, but I can wholly admit that it had TONS of content jam-packed into an older game. Some of the iterations of these characters were really fresh and the festivals were super unique and memorable, too. Glad to hear your take on this! Once you're done playing all the games, I'd love to hear your thoughts or see tier lists of the different bachelor(ettes), festivals, animals, etc.
Harvest Moon 64 is my absolute favorite Harvest Moon game, even to this day. I remember getting it for CHristmas in 1998 0r 1999 and playing the hell out of it. When I first played it I named the character after my self thinking i was going to pick my character's gender but no I was a boy xD So I was stuck playing as a boy but in my mind i pretended i was girl who happened to be dressed in boys clothing. And I married Karen and I made so many mistakes that resulted in a lot of animals dying, made Karen and Kai leave the town, made Cliff leave, and basically got me a a bad score from my dad XD So upon my second playthrough I did a lot better and got a decent score but still my character's dad was disappointed that I didn't have many friends but at least i was popular with the ladies and cared for the animals lol

My biggest complaint for HM64 is the speed of the day. Other games seem like the day is longer... or it takes less time to get places.
