I remember my first wife in this game. It was Karen. I noticed that her feelings for me improved when I showed her my dog once. So I tried to see if it would keep working and after 50 "shows", her feelings went up a notch. I showed her my dog 150 times and she fell in love with me. Lol. She was always a hard catch but the girl must love dogs.
I loved the hell out of this game when my family had it for the N64. It was always pretty satisfying to finish the game with a fully upgraded farm, a wife and child, and hundreds of thousands in the bank XD. At first I thought I'd never like a game like this, but my grandma brought it over to our house one time and I thought it was just great.
When I was a child I knew my mum got me harvest moon a wonderful life for my birthday. She was out so I snuck into her bedroom and started playing the game. She came home and caught me though :( still was worth it hehe.
I loved playing this game as a kid. It had so many secrets and things to do like fully upgrading your house, getting the greenhouse, creating recipes and finding all the hidden power berries. As an adult I don't think I will play it again, instead i'll just remember it fondly for what is was.
+homesponge It's been known for quite a few years now that it's never happening. Apparently the game is too glitchy to port. So basically spend the 60+ bucks to get the game on Ebay, or emulate. I'm normally against emulation, but I emulate the shit out of this game. The makers ain't gonna make a cent from me buying a super expensive potentially shit copy so I will unabashedly emulate the ever loving fuck out of it. And you should too. Spread the word. Maybe those lazy cunts will take note and get on making a proper retail virtual console version.
I loved this game as a child. This was my summer of the year 2000. It had so many secrets that it would drive you crazy trying to find them all. It also had alot of glitches, some of them game destroying. I tried so hard to unlock the fourth TV station only to later find out that it didn't exist in the western versions of the game. It was aparently scrapped due time and budget issues. Also, a cooking system was also scrapped from the final game, and the unlockable kitchen became nothing more than a mostly empty room with a fridge and a recipe book that you could collect recipes for but never use. However, a cooking system was added into the Play Station version Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, which had all the same character designs as this game.
Playing this game at the age 9 was an omen at how terrible at management I would become. Idk why but I felt a dreadful feeling when I lost at this game - no other game made me feel as terrible at losing quite like harvest moon 64 did - at the age of 9 it hit me hard...
I agree with a lot of what you said in your review. For me it felt rewarding to see my crops and animals grow, and earning money to spend on upgrades felt (to my 9 year old self) like I was an adult making something of my life :D Great review!
This and the PS1 Harvest Moon were fantastic, I've been a HUGE HM fan since the first game. The PS1 version is similar to the 64 game, but with a new environment and a ton of extra stuff. Its sad that the new Harvest Moon games have been pretty disappointing. Thankfully Rune Factory has been able to make up for it. No offense, but those crop layouts made me cringe XD You should use the hoe to make a 3x3 square minus the bottom middle square, and make sure to keep each 3x3 grid at least one empty space apart. This'll let you have access to 8 plants, both for watering and picking, whereas the H style will only let you have 7, and filling in every space in a large area will end up leaving you with only 6.
Yup. The Stardew Valley developers was purely inspired by this game. They're virtually identical, except Stardew Valley being an over-all improvement imo.
A friend was kind to me and sold it for 5 bucks. I tried getting into it, but was turned off by the music resetting every time I would enter a new screen. The slow pacing also made me not want to continue. Your review has made me wanna go back to it though and give it another shot.
I played back to nature as a kid and adored it but recently played 64 and think it's amazing. I am mostly impressed with the rival marriages and babies how I wish they kept that going in future installments!
I never owned the N64 version of the game, but I did have it on Gamecube and loved it. I remember reading about Harvest Moon 64 in a magazine but wasn't able to have it. So when the opportunity to get it on Gamecube I jumped at it. And like yourself, I never thought I'd enjoy it, but I did.
What I like (and hate) about this game, is just how much these carts go for. I went to pick up a copy for my fiance (she loves the HM series) and was FLOORED. Just look up the prices (at least here in the US) for a loose cart. Don't even BOTHER looking for a cart in box. You could be well on your way to a house payment.
David Adams its crazy how much it costs although its because a) they didnt order a huge number to be produced and also as it was never released in PAL theres a to of european collectors who import it which combine to bump the price up
I literally was watching another review of this game as was hoping that your next game to review Glenn would be Harvest Moon 64 and so this was a freaky co-incidence that you actually reviewed this game right after I had watched a bunch of reviews of this game.
Spot on review, Glenn. I only came upon this game a few years ago, so I think that fact may have had a lot to do with how I felt about it. I had trouble getting into it, and after giving it maybe a season or two, I basically stopped playing. If I had come upon this at an earlier time in my life, it might have had a bigger impact. Unfortunately, games that start very slowly tend not to have much staying power with me. That said, the game is wonderfully unique. There's really no other game like it on the system, and there were a few moments during certain events in the game that felt really special. Moments where you feel as though this is a real community that exists, and it all feels very human. I'm definitely never going to sell the game, because I might just get into it...someday.

How do you get your farm to be shown from that perspective? I'm using the old weird angled view and it takes me an entire day to water 2 patches of crops :\

@@n64glennplant Thanks, I figured it out it was literally the R1 and L1 buttons. Didn't think it would be that simple but it's made the game far easier!
I remember the SNES game fondly, and found it strange that this was not released worldwide, when the GC games that came after it were. The price is definitely why I'm not eager at all to pick this up.

What kind of monster makes a h shape corn field? Everybody knows thst after the first corn or regrowable products, you pick everything, then cut the crops in a u shape for easy pickings.
I had it on the Original gameboy. Used to play it for hours and hours. This never came out in the UK did it? If so I never saw it :( always wanted it. I hear a WII U version is coming, but I am unlikely to get it despite my love of the series as a child. Like you Glenn I no longer have time for open-ended games or hugely lengthy ones, I actually like games with a short nature now a days! Good video and very true comments of childhood. Keep it up.
I've played some Rune Factory games but not a Harvest Moon one. Sooner or later I plan to try one because I like both RF games I've played. Chances are HM64 won't be my first since there are much cheaper ones I can get instead to start with.
How does this game compare to FOMT? I liked that game alot and really enjoyed mining, the TV shananigans and the various events during festivals, does this game have these things as well?
@@n64glennplant Back to Nature was the PS1 equivalent of this game with more crops and a slower clock. The town is completely different but they are often rivaled as each other
honestly i love this game. i don't care what anyone says, i spent many hours slaving away at this, then when stardew valley came out. it sucked me right back in.
Probably way too late for a comment to be relevant, however this was one of the only games I truly loved and enjoyed in the N64/playstation era. I played the bejeesus out of this game on a two week rental from blockbuster.
I got my start in this series with Back to Nature, but I can see why people like this version so much. The areas seem more interesting, there's more characters to interact with, and the game just seems to have more charm than Back to Nature. I just wish it didn't feel like you were so strapped for time in the game. It feels like you blink and the day is over, to the point it feels like you have to purposefully choose everyday: Do I work on the farm or do I hang out in town? I desperately wish someone would make a romhack that extends the length of a day! At least in Back to Nature, you could work on your farm, and still have an in-game hour or 3 left to talk to your potential wife.
I found this in my garage a couple years back along with a game boy covered in a horrible sticker that I scrubbed off with a toothbrush while cleaning, must have been the previous owners. It was in perfect condition, stupidly I sold it to GameStop in hopes of getting some extra cash to buy spider man 2018, they gave me $2.14 lol. It goes on eBay for about 60 in the condition I had it in. I was younger, and less wise. I kept the game boy though, still works!
the days just go by too fast in this one... you basically need a set plan for your day and rush it all. It's still probably my second favorite in the series though.
I loved this game. This is how life should be. I always married Ellen because I never noticed the dude she married anyways and I would feel bad about most others being permanent bachelors.
I remember playing this game for hours to no end. Me and my brothers managed to marry to a different girl: My bigger brother would marry Karen, my middle brother the pink haired girl, and me, the youngest, the simple but charming baker girl Ellie. Fond memories of this game, my uncle got it for us.
I always went after either Karen or Ellie. Ellie was cute and humble, while Karen was a spitfire. I always thought it was funny that Karen would sometimes break eggs while helping out on the farm after you marry her XD.
If you ever do, i'd pick up "Story of Seasons" for the 3DS. It's made by the people who made Harvest Moon, they just couldn't call it that because of problems with Natsume (they own Harvest Moon). If you want classic Harvest Moon on a handheld, i'd recommend Friends of Mineral Town. I've never really enjoyed Harvest Moon on consoles and I can't bring myself to play really old Harvest Moon games either. I like being able to take my game with me for a game like Harvest Moon. The more modern systems work so much better than having to run back to your tool shed to change tools or being able to only carry 1 thing at a time.
I used to have this AND the SNES version (and got them new back in the day - for real) but I had to sell them -__- I loved this game though. I haven't been as into the more recent Harvest Moon games, but the original ones had a definite charm. Not a je nais se quoi as much as a yo no sé que.
Never played a Harvest Moon game but I was looking into the SNES game not long back though didn't know much about it, I assumed it was something along the lines of this but didn't really know how pact it was with activities but this one on the N64 looks right up my ally.. I like games such as the Sim cities and Tycoon games so this is much like that but with farming I guess. I would have lost hours to this game had I of had it in the day.
Brilliant review, I've always been curious of similar games like these but I am very hesitant because they require a lot of time and patience. 'You can't go all Borat on the local village girls. Put them in your sack and take them as your wife.' XD
Just hearing the music takes me back to a game I asked my dad to buy me just due to the cover art and somehow he said yes. I played for like 8 in game yesrs before dtsrting multiple more fules to marry each of the different girls. But of course Elli will always be my #1 waifu haha
I found it really difficult to trigger dialogue lines with elli she would always say "I like fresh milk and eggs" it was constant she drove me mad!! I really like popuri though.
i play it back in the day...i finish ill and alone, poor, the horse kick me and the dog sue me....my mother finish it and she gets the best ending with the blonde girl. (at least this game is more "easy" than ps1 one)
let's say she is more patient than I... I am more the explorer type and feed the animals and watch the harvest took me almost the whole day, then it start to rain , I get ill for work and .... it was a vegan massacre
retrovideogamejunkie dam son well i cant lie i was the same way when i started but i ended up getting popire the pink hair girl cause well she was one of the nices one (fuck karen)
It was a good game I remember it well. Unfortunately this is one of those times I have to tip my hat to PlayStation ...Back to Nature was way better than HM 64. I had both and while I will always have a soft spot of HM 64 the PS version just had so much more stuff in it. I think ther series as a whole kinda lost it's way after that generation, going too weird or keeping the game too short. It's funny now that Farming Simulator is beginning to make some ground.
This game was so awesome and underrated. I remember using GameShark and getting unlimited blue feathers. I got engaged to all the girls. The game didn't know how to handle it though haha. There'd be different chicks coming to my farm all the time lol. Karen, my main girl, never caught me with all my side pieces though haha
I went after Karen every single time and as it turned out, I always went after complicated women, just like her - girls that needed to be saved. Glad I got over that, lol.
Did anyone else's siblings hit your horse and dog with an axe? Only for you to open your saved game and your horse and/or dog will be upset with you and will not respond to your whistle?
***** I would come back home after school or football practice and would catch my sister or brother beating my animals. Cows would stop giving golden milk, sheeps won't give wool, and they would sometimes dies.
***** they are really fun and these days you'd get a mobile version with micro transactions for games like this so play the gameboy ones if you like playing in short bursts
Personally, seeing this game NOW makes me wish to know it existed other than just simple Mario Games, Pokémon, XBOX, and all sorts of other games! Seeing this game can really melt your heart and get you just excited based on the fact how you get to choose freely what you can/cannot do in the environment given to you in the game. I could make an hour Review for this game WITHOUT EVEN PLAYING THE GAME! Seeing a few walkthroughs actually made me a bit excited that a game like this could help you be satisfied for quite a long time instead of just beating the game in 1-5 Days. My question to you Glenn, "Which woman did you choose to marry in Harvest Moon?" If I played the Game. Mine would be Elli. Mostly because her personality could perhaps fit my taste. (Bullies on the internet are named after them because they are a fucking cactus with: "Get a life mothafucka.") Would you recommend getting a Wii U (From what I read, I believe that we use one just to play these games.) to just play this game and other Harvest Moon games? I perhaps may choose to get one later on in life just for kicks and giggles. This game reminds me a lot like Animal Crossing which I LOVED IT when I was younger, personally I have so much STUFF in my mind right now, I cannot explain it in this Comment section.

Like you Glenn I no longer have time for open-ended games or hugely lengthy ones, I actually like games with a short nature now a days! Good video and very true comments of childhood. Keep it up.
Nah it never did...always surprised me
I've played some Rune Factory games but not a Harvest Moon one. Sooner or later I plan to try one because I like both RF games I've played. Chances are HM64 won't be my first since there are much cheaper ones I can get instead to start with.
Yeah the n64 one is not the cheapest!
And from reviews I've seen the Gamecube ones seem good for a lot less.
This game was very good. One of the best versions
Definitely there is a surprising amount of dialogue if you look for it too!
How does this game compare to FOMT?
I liked that game alot and really enjoyed mining, the TV shananigans and the various events during festivals, does this game have these things as well?
+HIKAJO never played mineral town myself but perhaps someone else's will be able to advise
Glenn here's a very hard question.
Which do you think is better?
Harvest Moon 64 or Back To Nature?
Not played BTN as far as I’m aware but long running series such as this sometimes muddle my memory with names
I have all the physical copies of all the games in the harvest Moon series
This is my favorite game of all times
Looks similar to back to nature and it's true nowadays it's hard to find a game worth Playing a lot.
Probably way too late for a comment to be relevant, however this was one of the only games I truly loved and enjoyed in the N64/playstation era. I played the bejeesus out of this game on a two week rental from blockbuster.
Once again, MAH CHILDHOOD!!!
TWK Reviews amen to that!
Getting married and having a child was featured in the first game too though.
Could you talk about the compatibility of the n64 games with emulator like Wii64?
I don't use emulators so it's not a topic I can discuss I'm afraid
That's pretty cool. I've been using an emulator just to get footage of harvest moon 64. Needless to say, I like the game a lot!
What I liked about this one was, unlike the PS1 version, you can rotate the camera.
Aww miss N64
This is a great game and imo one of the few that is still just as playable now as it was when it first came out
Goenitz Lopez i think so too, it hasn't aged that badly because they stuck to the 2d look and feel of the originals
Is it really that expensive now??
Yup getting more and more expensive
I adore this game. It would definitely be in my top 10 n64 games.
Angel of Death it would appear that its on a lot of other peoples too!
the days just go by too fast in this one... you basically need a set plan for your day and rush it all. It's still probably my second favorite in the series though.
uglypinkmoose Which is your favorite?
My favourite was a wonderful life what was yours?
I loved this game. This is how life should be. I always married Ellen because I never noticed the dude she married anyways and I would feel bad about most others being permanent bachelors.
I remember playing this game for hours to no end. Me and my brothers managed to marry to a different girl: My bigger brother would marry Karen, my middle brother the pink haired girl, and me, the youngest, the simple but charming baker girl Ellie. Fond memories of this game, my uncle got it for us.
I always went after either Karen or Ellie. Ellie was cute and humble, while Karen was a spitfire. I always thought it was funny that Karen would sometimes break eggs while helping out on the farm after you marry her XD.
darkprinc979 Haha true! But its charming that she still tried!
I really like popuri she's so sweet
You named your horse epona! I used to always do that haha
I'm just like everyone else ha
Another great review :) but I so wish we got this game over here in the UK :'(
Michael Whiteley me too, with all the farmers here id have thought i would have sold well! hah
I wish they'd make a game with the aesthetics of this game, but with the modern gameplay of current "Harvest Moon/ Story of Seasons".
timmer919hep i want to try the new ones but dont have the systems or time to get stuck into it i think
You could get married and have a kid in the first game as well, but this game and Back to Nature made it a lot more interesting.
Still no remake or remade to the game that I end playing it for hours at a time.
you know you can put vegtables in your backpack
CreamyGoodness47 yeah he said that in the video ding dong
Now on nintendo online service
Cool
This looks like a good game! I missed this one out when I was growing up! May get it! They should do a new one!
I used to have this AND the SNES version (and got them new back in the day - for real) but I had to sell them -__- I loved this game though. I haven't been as into the more recent Harvest Moon games, but the original ones had a definite charm. Not a je nais se quoi as much as a yo no sé que.
***** i would be interested in checking out the newer versions but i dont own any of the newer consoles etc
***** Really? I didn't realize that. What's the most recent console you own? Dreamcast?
Never played a Harvest Moon game but I was looking into the SNES game not long back though didn't know much about it, I assumed it was something along the lines of this but didn't really know how pact it was with activities but this one on the N64 looks right up my ally.. I like games such as the Sim cities and Tycoon games so this is much like that but with farming I guess. I would have lost hours to this game had I of had it in the day.
It's s game you can sink hours into and think you've only been playing it for a short time.
This one was never released in Australia, so I had to get a PS1 for my Harvest Moon fix.. also that milking joke, hahaha
Lol I could resist slipping that in there
Brilliant review, I've always been curious of similar games like these but I am very hesitant because they require a lot of time and patience.
'You can't go all Borat on the local village girls. Put them in your sack and take them as your wife.' XD
KhazDamit lol i love borat, never understood why he speaks polish though when he's a kazak!
i play this on ps1 and gameboy advance
I love this game
And you’ll be left milking... cows?
Better than cat milk 😉 🥛
Just hearing the music takes me back to a game I asked my dad to buy me just due to the cover art and somehow he said yes. I played for like 8 in game yesrs before dtsrting multiple more fules to marry each of the different girls. But of course Elli will always be my #1 waifu haha
Karen was always my no.1 I didnt want her to leave the island.
I found it really difficult to trigger dialogue lines with elli she would always say "I like fresh milk and eggs" it was constant she drove me mad!! I really like popuri though.
Yay! Good news! Natsume announced This month that Harvest Moon 64 is coming to Wii-U Virtual Console for north america and europe, woot!
+Danielle Conder love it!
i play it back in the day...i finish ill and alone, poor, the horse kick me and the dog sue me....my mother finish it and she gets the best ending with the blonde girl. (at least this game is more "easy" than ps1 one)
retrovideogamejunkie haha i havnt played the playstation versions although the handheld gameboy ones are cool too
how did your mom whoop your ass in the game also tell her the pink hair is best girl point blank and simple
let's say she is more patient than I... I am more the explorer type and feed the animals and watch the harvest took me almost the whole day, then it start to rain , I get ill for work and .... it was a vegan massacre
retrovideogamejunkie
dam son well i cant lie i was the same way when i started but i ended up getting popire the pink hair girl cause well she was one of the nices one (fuck karen)
Harvest moon is better than animal crossing
I just want to tend to the rabbits
That’s one way to play 😁
This game was so awesome and underrated. I remember using GameShark and getting unlimited blue feathers. I got engaged to all the girls. The game didn't know how to handle it though haha. There'd be different chicks coming to my farm all the time lol. Karen, my main girl, never caught me with all my side pieces though haha
I went after Karen every single time and as it turned out, I always went after complicated women, just like her - girls that needed to be saved. Glad I got over that, lol.
Great review
Thanks Rico
Now that’s my kind of game
Perfect for what’s happening in the world
Now right
Yeah these therapeutic games are a godsend in these moments.
Did anyone else's siblings hit your horse and dog with an axe? Only for you to open your saved game and your horse and/or dog will be upset with you and will not respond to your whistle?
Bucc42 lol not me but thats so funny
***** I would come back home after school or football practice and would catch my sister or brother beating my animals. Cows would stop giving golden milk, sheeps won't give wool, and they would sometimes dies.
I've never played a harvest moon game
***** they are really fun and these days you'd get a mobile version with micro transactions for games like this so play the gameboy ones if you like playing in short bursts
I played this game ! Only once tho
And never again :(
Personally, seeing this game NOW makes me wish to know it existed other than just simple Mario Games, Pokémon, XBOX, and all sorts of other games!

Everything is better at three sixteen
