First Look | 2021 Mazda CX-5 Touring Review in Enterprise Alabama

- The 2021 Mazda CX-5 Touring as of now doesn’t have many new things to show. Yes, it has the all-new 10.25 inch screen and 7th generation Mazda infotainment, but it doesn’t have any other changes until you look at the packaging or simpler the moonroof package. The previous Touring Preferred package is no more. There is a Touring SV package that will offer more equipment than the preferred. It will not be available until next month. For now, the standard CX5 Touring has plenty of great equipment and standard features that are rarely seen on the second trim model up from the entry level.

Remember all of these vehicles are currently in stock on our lot (we own them). We have no problem removing the decal if that’s what the new owner prefers.

They have narrowed their options into models or packages for the most part. Limited packages with the models.

When did they change the touring back to 17” wheels? I love that since I live in the land o’potholes and chew through tires pretty quick. 19’s would push me to Kia or Honda. Now I’m interested in one of these again!
They changed back to 17s in 2019. Pizza Wheels we’re nice while they lasted, as long as you didn’t have many potholes on your drive.
Hey Jonathan and others, I hope everyone is doing well. I have a question, my wife is looking into buying either a sky blue (best way that i can describe the color) 2023 mazda cx-5 s premium for roughly 25k, no cosmetic damage and only 32k miles but the sales experience wasn't the best vs a white 2021 touring that we are going to see today for under 25k with roughly 30k miles on it (in terms of condition of the suv, that is to be determined today), we have been going all around for almost a week car shopping and would like to know which one is worth the money? It's an exhausting experience lol please help

I enjoy your very informative videos. The CX-5’s are my new obsession. I am waiting to check out a CX -5 2021 Touring, with the Preferred Package, to arrive at the dealership. It is the Deep Chrystal Blue with Parchment interior. Do you know if it will have the white trim on the interior door arm rests like the GT models do with the parchment interior. I really wanted a GT but the dealership thinks I will be as satisfied with the Touring with the Preferred Package. I really like the contrast of the white interior trim on the doors so I’m wondering about that interior trim on the Touring. Thanks.

Hi Jonathan. I live near Houston, Texas and have been following your channel because I've been interested in getting a CX-5. I had my eye on a 2021 CX-5 Touring that just came down in price. I went to look at it the other day and it was my first time even sitting in one. I felt like I belonged immediately. The one you are showing in this video looks almost exactly like the one in Houston even a mica blue paint. I do wonder if it is front wheel drive or AWD and if it comes with a full size spare tire or a "donut"? The one in the video seems to be having everything else the one I like has. Also I don't think it has a passenger side power seat???
Which one would you prefer 2020 Mazda CX-5 grand touring with the premium passage or the 2021 Mazda CX-5 with the premium package?
Between the two I would purchase the 2021 for the new screen and connected services.

Did they fix the adaptive cruise control this year so that the gear changes aren't as dramatic?
I haven’t noticed any atypical shifts. Any cruise control shifts into or out of overdrive quickly.

I like the pin stripping. Although not a fan of the self promotion lol The pin stripping adds a nice touch. I might have to look into some vinyl if I get the white. It's just a tad to plain for my taste.
Does the new CX-5 Carbon Edition have the six-speaker sound system or the Bose ten-speaker? Really cool trim, but the audio is a deal breaker if I can't upgrade to Bose.

One of my best friends is the vinyl vendor 😬. It’s really about 50/50 those who like and those who don’t. However less than 10% ask us to remove them.

Do you think Mazda vehicles, especially SUV's can benefit from an 8-speed transmission? Panoramic sunroof? And lane center keep assist? These are lovely daily drivers, with CX-9 on top of my list, but what are your thoughts? I love the blue color and wish they had the CX-9 Signature in that color.
I think an 8 speed transmission is probably next for Mazda. The pano roof won’t be too far behind. I think as they continue to improve their safety systems and get further down the roads with Toyota, they will have lane centering also. I think Mazda has been big on styling for the last 10 years, and big on driving dynamics/performance that is cutting edge. I think it’s time for them to step up in technology and safety, convenience features to lead the industry. I too would like the Blue available on Signature. They should be a little more flexible on their color pallets.
@@JSS Thanks for the detailed Replay. It's such a shame because 7 years ago when I was shopping for a sedan, I tried out at least a dozen before I tried the 2014 Mazda 6 GT. It literally was a league above everything else I had seen. Looks, drive, technology. Everything about it was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. I bought it the moment the test drive was over. That was a great starting point for the brand to make a come back and really take away some market share. But I feel now they've been resting on their laurels and in 7 years have not done much in terms of features and styling and the competition has surpassed them in terms of value. The value proposition is not there any more with Mazda that once was. I am in the market for an SUV but I don't want to wait 2 years to buy a Mazda (I usually wait 1 year so the current models get specials, discounts and rebates for a sweeter deal). I do keep my vehicles 7-8 years and drive them to at least 100,000k miles. So if I have to commit I need everything in a car as it's a long term investment/commitment.
Are there any safety feature improvements in CX-5 2021 (all trims) compared to the 2020 models?

It’s like scribbling all over a fine artist’s work. Nasty-looking. You may as well key the car and scribe your initials into it.
I would suggest that the purchaser be given the choice and the stripes added then if they so desire.

What do you mean project? It does have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but not a casting or streaming software.

@@MinhaoJiang I've read/heard from several sources that it's not touch. Most reviewers also don't touch the screen so I can only assume it's not touch. Also, John has first hand knowledge whether or not it's touch.

It still has the touch button/pads on the outside.
@@JSS man i wish it had the touch sensitive handle, tho i read over on reddit the mazda 3 has a lot of issues with that. so till they perfect it, the button one is probably better.

Not on the CX5, unless you have the Active Driving Display.

@@JSS yeah, well I'm from colombia and my sisters have 2, they have a 1.5 ( 4 cylinder) with 108.6 hp, it has very good materials, it weights 1040kg and it's pretty roomy in the back.
The toyota yaris sedan in the USA is a mazda 2 with a different face but it's basically the same

I totally understand not changing much and wait for the next gen to be a proper evolution of the car, but to not offer any good color options is totally unacceptable and lazy, this is where Jeep and Rav4 are pulling ahead, how hard is it to offer some cool matte colors for the lower trims? Mazda is really missing out on the sales by keeping the color gamut so narrow. That matte grey they showed for the carbon edition CX9 should not be exclusive at this point, when you have Kia K5 offering the same color, its almost 2021, Mazda needs some focus groups to learn what the consumer wants in 2021? its ridiculous. Lost a sale here, im going with Rav4 this holiday. Yes, colors are not a big deal for many, but for me, going from a bland white im looking to change things up, and the blue, red, greys, Mazda has to offer are very meh
I agree some more colors would be nice, but the soul red is far from "meh". Probably the most beautiful red available on a mainstream car. I like the eternal blue mica a lot too, and I wish it was available on the CX-30 but it's not.

I think the Machine Gray and Soul Red are the best on the market for their shades. I agree though, Mazda should bring back some brighter colors. Just moving the same ones around models every other year is getting tiresome.

Navigation is extra!?...that should be standard on pretty much every car especially for the price...also for it have blind spot assist
I agree, however most people don’t use Navigation through the car any more. Especially with smartphones, and smartphone mirroring.

I just bought the mazda CX-5 touring base yesterday. I didn’t notice but we don’t have a button on key fob to open the car cargo trunk. Also I couldn’t find any button inside the car. Everytime we have to open the trunk we have to go outside ? Especially during curbside pickups?
You’ll only have the button with the power lift gate as part of the Touring Preferred package. Bose sound and moonroof also come with this package. They added leather seats in 2021’s SV package. If you don’t have those…there won’t be a button. I’m sorry.

Does the smartphone connectivity enable you to see the individual tire pressures for each of the 4 tires?
Yes it does. It has a health report that shows tire pressure, oil amount, and maintenance interval.

Yes they are pretty close to flat, not exactly 180 degrees.
Can you open the hatch from the key fob on the touring without the SV package?
No, the power lift gate is part of the Preferred SV package.
What about the transmission?

Do you think the touring is worth the upgrade from the sports trim? I’m contemplating wether I should pay 30 dollar more a month in my note because of the advance in trim level.
It’s worth it to me, but your money and your budget is what matters. The Sport is still a great vehicle.

Touring does not have 18" wheels? If not, it should. Forget the branding pinstripes and the name of the dealership (in the rear). Leatherette should also be on the seat. This will wear in time. Mazda should have an 8 speed, toss the 6. Jonathan, you should also mention pricing on your videos. Other wise good job.
I mention pricing sometimes. I usually forget because I’m more focused on the features.
Is the cylinder deactivation finally gone in the 2021 models?
It is gone from the Mazda3 and CX-30, but still in the CX-5
Same flawed driving position with short seat bottoms, no thigh support. A steering wheel that doesn’t extend far enough. A dead pedal pushed too forward. A armrest that’s pushed too far back. All confirmed and mentioned from motorweek, car and driver and others. It’s a quiet refined drive but it’s one uncomfortable driving experience.
