I just bought the CX5 Touring. It turns out that there is a special package only available on the Touring model that adds essentially all the upgrades of the Carbon except the unique color choice. It’s perfect for me as living in the desert I wanted a light car inside and out, and the white interior is beautiful. And, it’s very nice having the upgraded radio, moon roof, leather seats, power lift gate and passenger seat, etc. The thing you didn’t mention is that the upgrade option to the turbo engine starts with the Carbon; it’s not available on the Touring (so I don’t have that.)
The carbon edition has heated front seats only and the GT has heated front, back and also options to cool seats at the fronts. Moreover the Gt has a digital speedometer and kidda like a speedometer projector on the windshield so when you drive you can see ur speed right be4 ur eyes rather than looking at the dashboard. Also on the gt model when you shut off the engine , both of the side mirrors fold in which is really nice, overall Gt does have some different features and that's why it's more expensive but I still think the ce is the one to go for.
I just purchased the CX5 GTR and love it! I had almost purchased a CRV touring. But after driving the CX5, I realized that it blows the the doors off the CRV not just in performance but features. Why the CX5 doesn’t outsell the CRV is beyond me. This thing is amazing.

@@JSS thank you jon: I’ll send you some pics when I get a bit if good weather and the right location. It was your website, your info , your advice and your raw enthusiasm for the brand that influenced my ultimate decision… I’m genuine when I say that. If it hadn’t been for you I’m likely to have reverted to Honda in the end. I’m sooo pleased I listened to you, tried the product extensively, took time to make my decision and resisted the urge to look in the rear view mirror too much! My only disappointment was not being able finalise the deal through you - if I was on the opposite coast of the US I’d of driven to your dealership to buy from you. The car has been such a rewarding decision… the AWD, the traction control and the basic setup makes it feel incredibly ‘planted’ on the road - it feels like the car is literally sucked onto the bitumen! Body roll is noticeably absent in comparison to my Honda. And the feedback through the steering wheel is the most reassuring thing I’ve felt in any car I’ve driven. Ever! The scuff plates on the back and in the doors look great and the additional lighting in the rear cargo bay is like power steering and air-conditioning - how did we ever live without them! After almost 30 years driving Honda accords It’s taking me a little while to get used to the different seating and mirror positioning etc and there are one or two minor obstructions I’m learning to live with, ie the centre console against my knee - but they’re not deal breakers nor worthy of complaint. No foot activated tailgate on a $57,000 car is bewildering - I think Mazda definitely dropped the ball on that one and not providing a physical owners manual for the navigation system is just plain penny-pinching - there’s not even a downloadable version on the Mazda Australia site. I think the version I found is from the US. It’s an oversight on Mazda’s behalf because not always do we have fast access to the internet no matter where we are…. And sometimes a physical copy of something is easier, quicker and more effective to work with. The safety features are incredibly helpful and what’s not to love about stop and go cruise control!! I think the indicator lights are bit underwhelming - especially the front two which don’t particularly stand out. Toyota and the European brands - Mercedes, Audi and so on have nailed that part with the setup they all use - easy to see, elegant stylish… the CX30 is a much better setup in the front than the CX5 I reckon and it’s hard to fathom why in the range topper model that’s full clever headlight tech and LED lighting, Mazda opts to throw in cheap standard globes in the indicator light. I was a little disappointed to see where Mazda had cut corners in the trim… for example the front carpet only goes as far as the eyeline when you are sitting in the seat… step out of the car and look at the firewall and where it stops stands out like a poke in the eye with a stick… not really the sort of blatant economising the brand should do when they claim euro matching luxury - it short changes the customer and looks cheap. But really Jon all these things are really just minor observations - they’re not complaints … we could easily find things about a Rolex watch that disappoints too if we tried. It would take me two full days to list everything that impresses me about this car!! In the end, The most important KPI for me is the fact that the CX5 makes me feel good every single time I get inside… job done!! I’m now a Mazda convert !! Cheers - kevin

Have both a 2021 Tiguan SE and 2021 CX5 Grand Touring. Can make a lot of comparisons but the 4 comparisons to bring up: 1) Tiguan infotainment Touch screen is 100% better than CX5 convoluted knob system, and in CX5 you have to use a cable to use Apple Play or Android Auto; Tiguan connects via WiFi. CX5 does have USB slot wherein you can use a thumb drive packed with music. 2) CX5 ride is way too stiff, you feel every little bump. The CX5 is my wife’s car and she is NOT a car person but she even said, “My Mazda has a more bumpy ride than your VW.” 3) Highway MPG: Tiguan = 36.6; CX5 = 32.2. Both highway MPG respectable. 4) On long drives, you can get “seat fatigue” in Mazda, not so in Tiguan. CX5 seats “look” more comfortable but looks are deceiving.
But how does the Tiguan compare in price to the CX5? Are they similarly priced, or is the Tiguan significantly more expensive? I’ve been doing a LOT of research on the CX5, but I have to say that SEAT COMFORT and the clunky, seemingly backward/counter-intuitive (less safe, imo) infotainment system in the Mazda CX5 could possibly be deal-breakers for me…. OH! And the lack of Wifi connection (WTH?)! I spend a TON of time in my car. It’s really my 2nd home for the amount of time that I spend driving, so COMFORT and ease of functionality are VERY important for me! I love what I’m hearing about how the CX5 drives/handles, and how the interior styling is a cut above its competitors, but I need to go test drive and figure out if I can live with the uncomfortable seats and the backward infotainment system. I’m really hoping 🙏🙏🙏 that Mazda will improve both (along with better suspension for a less bumpy ride) on their next iteration of the CX5! I’m probably going to have to buy something BEFORE that happens though. I just need to go test drive a few and see how they feel.

Oh...man....I just got 21 Kuro edition...and I don't have Bose speaker on Kuro and the infotainment system is still old one not the 10.25"......somethings wrong with Canadian cx-5...
and I didn't realize when I was doing my test driving...i guess because I did it on a day...GT's signature lighting loooks really nice....I might order GT tail light later and swap them...
Still Bose sound system is a real disappointment....I can't even install it later...
I’m sure Mazda has their reasons. Did you get Polymetal Gray Kuro?
@@JSS I did...I got the polymetal...In my opinion, it is the best color with red interior and black wheel...I think I am the only one driving Kuro around my area....everyone is driving GTs, or GS which is Touring in US...even my dealer had only 2 Kuros in their lot. So it makes my car one of kind...
Does the carbon edition have heated mirrors?
No that is standard on Grand Touring and Higher.
The carbon edition does it have fog lights and the hud display on the windshield?
It does not have either.
Thankyou ive made my mind up ill be purchasing the GT but it wont be in the soul red Mazda has rode that colour to death i wish there were more colours to pick from
I'll take that GT!
It’s here for you!
@@JSS HaHa...AL is a long way from CA
I need one bad 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🥵
Does 2021 come with Wireless apple carplay and Android auto?
No, the Mazda6 is the only US vehicle that offers wireless CarPlay
@@JSS will that be an option offered as a retrofit for mazda products do you know? The wireless apple carplay and Android auto
The Carbon edition does, I’m using it
@@maryeverling8238 wireless? Are you sure?
the video seems kind of dark... I had to restart my browser a couple of times...
I’m still working on that. Don’t know if it’s the render or the time of day.
@@JSS after some more research I was certain the carbon turbo was my choice. But I really want the amenities of the grand touring reserve: heated steering wheel and ventilated seats. I’m sure they all have real leather at that trim, but not Nappa leather on the signature line!
Yes, the Nappa is only on Signature.
@JonathanSewell .. Do any of the Carbon Edition Models have the option for LED Foglights, Illuminated Doorsill Trim Plates, and Interior Lighting Kit?
.... The Build feature online for the regular Carbon Edition (Non-Turbo) have these as options.
I’m sure you can have the dealership add some of those options. Door sills and interior lighting probably.
No satellite radio on the carbon? Why? Damn you Mazda.
They have removed it from some packaging.
@@JSS Yes, the question is why? Sirius is available on cars way less expensive as the Carbon Edition. I mean how much are they saving in omitting it? I bet not much and I'm sure they could have tossed that cost easily into the price. Mazda is trying to inch its way into the lower end luxury market - doing this doesn't help.
I know, the carbon edition should have an available package to add the cool things like heads up display
Just got the Carbon Edition last week. Only complaints I have are NO XM RADIO and NO FOG LIGHTS.
Your voice is like 2 sec delay than the video.
I didn’t notice, maybe if you refresh it will be better.
UNLESS I CAN GET THE TURBO IN THE MODEL I CHOOSE, I'm NOT INTERESTED.
You have three options in CX5. Maybe one of those will be what you prefer.
I just bought a 2020 Deep Crystal Blue Mica Grand Touring last night! It's an amazing car! I never thought id ever own a suv crossover but I was wrong lol
I love them! Enjoy and congratulations!
I agree with your choice, enjoy!
They all have LED daytime running lights and led low and high beams with halogen turn signal front and rear the difference between the GT carbon and touring is the GT models and above have the signature led headlights. Great video and content. I own a 19 cx5 GT with a premium package.
They should've kept the 2018 touring rims, these 2021 rims were used on the previous sport trim level
I am a big fan of the pizza wheels as well.
I bought the touring 2021. But the CarPlay kept on glitching. Brought it back to the dealer and they have no idea why… does anyone have the same problem?
What is it doing? I have had the system reset during CarPlay probably from information overload. After the Connect system resets it's fine. What glitches are you having?
@@JSS
I’m not sure how to describe it. But the screen looks like it cracked and it doesn’t matter what I do. I used 5-6 cords , including the Apple made one. I turned the car off and on. I posted a video with link below for a better description. Would you know how to reset it?

Sorry, but Leather seats are NOT exemplary of "upscale"! Leather is derived from slaughtered animals who screamed in pain just before they died. Horrible! WHY can't car makers get with the mindset of enlightened people and STOP using animal products in their cars?!
It’s leatherette.
Thank you Jonathan! This is very helpful!!!
You’re Welcome!
I'm not complain, Just let Jonathan know, Too dark may be the time was sunset, He can watch another video to compare!
I was learning some new formats, and I’ve figured most of it out.
Great overview, very thorough and comprehensive. Very helpful.
Thank you.
That old toyota pickup in the background had my attention!
They always grab mine also 😁
man i hope they put the Lighting package on that Carbon Edition as well. It would look so much more badass
Is it just me or this video looks under-exposed?
Jonathan, you still have the dark filter on!
I don’t know why it does that sometimes. Maybe it’s the time of day that throws it off.
@@JSS The final scene was funny. They named it carbon because it is so close to black as you demonstrated. Anything but white would have been almost black with that level of light.
@@andrewnolan180 It was darker than the eternal blue beside it. I was trying to give as close of a “naked eye” look as I was seeing.
you miss to talk about automatic bumper grill, in bottom of front bumper
Yes, I didn’t cover the shutters. Good catch.
Interesting, you don’t have an aux port as a standard equipment. And in Russia if cx5 come with leatherette trim we have 19 inch wheels, parking sensors, backup camera, rear window tint, adaptive led and power tail gate by default.
That’s cool! We have an aux port inside the console. Most people now use USB.
@@JSS and intresting, that carbon edition is front wheel drive only. Does it have an AWD version ?
Yes, It has AWD available.
Nice video Jonathan! It really helps seeing the difference between trims. I love the carbon edition. I wish it had the lights of the GT. It will complete the look. Is there a chance that these lights could be upgraded to the GT’s? Even aftermarket? Or, are there any plans to have a GT carbon edition? Thanks! Mauricio
If they change the Carbon, it will most likely be at model year change. I’m not sure of aftermarket light options, but there may be some available. I don’t think the factory lights can be upgraded.
If you found that lights can be replaced let me know I'm about to get 1 carbon
Have both a 2021 Tiguan SE and 2021 CX5 Grand Touring. Can make a lot of
comparisons but the 4 comparisons to bring up: 1) Tiguan infotainment
Touch screen is 100% better than CX5 convoluted knob system, and in CX5
you have to use a cable to use Apple Play or Android Auto; Tiguan
connects via WiFi. CX5 does have USB slot wherein you can use a thumb
drive packed with music. 2) CX5 ride is way too stiff, you feel every
little bump. The CX5 is my wife’s car and she is NOT a car person but
she even said, “My Mazda has a more bumpy ride than your VW.” 3)
Highway MPG: Tiguan = 36.6; CX5 = 32.2. Both highway MPG respectable.
4) On long drives, you can get “seat fatigue” in Mazda, not so in
Tiguan. CX5 seats “look” more comfortable but looks are deceiving.
Thank you for sharing. I am not as familiar with the VW, but know there are different design strategies between the two brands.
Keep doing videos likes this very helpful
Thank you! Glad it helped.
I have a 2018 touring in white. Best color IMO. 👍🏻. Just wish I had Apple CarPlay. 😢
I paid 350 at the Mazda dealer to add android auto and apple CarPlay to my 2017.
forgot to mention that on the Grand Touring and up, paddle shifters are standard...none on the Touring or the Carbon Edition.
Yes, I forgot those. Thank you
Don’t think it was mentioned but I believe the GT also adds ventilated seats
Digital speedometer on GT?
Only with the GT-P that includes HUD.
One man band, Not professional to take the video, Hard to watch !
May not be as professional as I like, but this is my side gig, and I really just want to get the information out there for people that are looking for it.
JL,ask for your money back .
@@JSS the video was very nice, clear and informative.. thanks a lot for the work that you have put into it. I understand the differences now and had a good look at the colors. Love the cx5 and for sure i will go for a testdrive soon.
