And Bootsy's fellow Funkadelic bandmate, Maceo Parker on the horn, and Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. This song started many parties, and still does, but HAD to be a party to make it!
I may be an old rocker raised on a diet of Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, AC/DC and bands like that; but "Groove Is In The Heart" triggers responsible cells in my brain to trigger the funk muscles in my body and before I realize it I am getting groovy... baby 💯
I do, however, recall a resurgence of this fashion in the early 90s. I think the color splash was in opposition to grunge. Also, I would have a hard time believing anyone knows how to tie dye anymore, so we get to keep that. ;-)

The reason this song is such a throwback - and was a throwback 30 years ago, is that the bass line is from the 1966 Herbie Hancock song Bring Down the Birds.
This song is a throwback even for the 90s. It's produced by Bootsy Collins, the bassist for James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic. The main groove is Herby Handcock, who was among other things was the pianist for Miles Davis(By my personal estimation the 2nd or 3rd most important American musician of the 20th century). Another bit was taken from another James Brown contemporary that Bootsy worked with back in the day. And then another bit by A Tribe Called Quest. All together musicians from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s come together to create one song in the 90s as a kind of one off joke song for fun. And it's awesome.
This music is considered house music where the background music is usually sampled and the vocals are soulful and the lyrics are positive and meaningful. This group is comprised of Lady Miss Kier, DJ Tei Towa (the Japanese guy) and DJ Dmitry (the Russian guy). You should react to more of their music like Power Of Love,, Runaway, Bittersweet Loving and Say Aaah please.
She was friends with my girlfriend and we used to go watch her perform at the Limelight in NY all the time and then go to the after party, that was fun times
Hey guys - groovy selection and I am glad you dug it, as I do! I would recommend a tune called "Connected" by a group by the name of Stereo MCs, it's one of my favorites from the same era. Peace & Love to All...
Yep, the fashion statement and graphics are retro-sixties/seventies MOD/psychedelic. Turn up the Bass more! Everybody liked this one. Blondie started out Punk in NYC during the mid-seventies, but not commercially viable, so branched out across genres as the Disco Craze grew and hit it big, yet kept their Punkish edge. X OFFENDER, KIDNAPPER, SHAYLA, BERMUDA TRIANGLE BLUES (flight 45). I was born in the mid-fifties, yet enjoy '80s music mostly (if you include '79, with stuff like Gary Numan's CARS, and ARE 'FRIENDS' ELECTRIC?).
some songs hit perfection ... The B52s 'Loveshack' are such an example, and so is 'Groove Is In The Heart" by Dee Lite. perfect song, perfect video, and can be played for hours on loop ... and I say that as someone who listened to Nick Cave and Sonic Youth at the time, and is mostly into Metal nowadays.
That’s Bootsy Collins with this short comments. You guys should check out some George Clinton or Parliament Funkadelic. Flash Light, Knee-Deep and more.
This was a huge, huge song & the video was on MTV all the time. It's 1990 so it was absolutely bridging the 80s & 90s. We had a resurgence of psychedelic at the time.
"_How do you say the groovy...." that was all they need to fill the dancefloors back then, an absolute floorfiller. Sadly most "reactors" just do this one, of course it was their biggest hit, but they made three great albums. First one was a pop album drenched in the most infectious house rhythms; second one, still dancey but with a soul twist and third, an eclectic though balanced mixture of house, rave, jungle and kitschy pop. Another example of short sight record label managment, they just wanted to sell them as a dance act and they were much more deep than that; plus, their singer, Miss Kier Kirby had an extenuatelly long battle with their label (electra) that wouldn't let her use her own name. They even were invited to perform at the prestigious Montreaux jazz festival, respect the groove, respect Deee Lite 👍👋
Lady Miss K went her own way, the boys went their own way, the music went its own way. Best word to describe Deee-Lite is "Authentic" there was nothing like them then and there has been nothing like them since. The sound of a generation, they changed the way I dressed and danced as a 16 year old in 1990. Great memories!
Q Tip was just starting out. Tribe just released their debut album 4 months prior to this feature, (1990) which was actually helpful with launching his and his group's careers. He was just warming up. By 93 A Tribe Called Quest was Hip Hop greatness.
I'm a Metal fan through and through. Problem with that, the girls were NOT at metal shows so I also went to a lot of dance clubs in the 90's. This song bring back so many memories and to this day I can't sit still when I hear it.
They were definitely going for a 60s/70s retro vibe with the video. By this time music videos had advanced past the early 80s video quality but this group obviously was going budget on the video a bit.
This was very late '80s I had a DJ promotion copy of it in '89 so, it was before 'A Tribe Called Quest' made it big which was in '91, even though they formed in '88, that's why 'Q-Tip' didn't get billing from the group, the female singer 'Lady Miss Kier' (who was also a DJ) and 'Bootsy Collins' on bass. Parts of this have been sampled, the first time was by, "A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It (Extended Boilerhouse Mix)", "SecondCity and George Smeddles - Groove Is In", "Latino Party - Arriba!", "The Orb - Perpetual Dawn (Solar Youth Mix)", "The Reflex - Groove Is In The Heart (The Reflex Revision)", "Towa Tei feat' Kylie Minogue - GBI: German Bold Italic", "Girl Talk - Step To It". There may be others but these are the ones that I know of.
That immaculate human at the beginning on the bass who says, "Dig!", is none other than Bootsie Collins, bassist for James Brown and The Parliament Funkadelics.
Before I watch this video, I will say, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, at least in the top 20. I don’t play it every day, but when I do I get down because the groove is in the heart baby.
When this song was big, a bunch of us went to LA to party for a long weekend. It was a disastrous trip for a few of them, and we had a very awkward 7-hour drive back to SF. The guy who owned the car we were in played this song on repeat for the Entire 7 hours!
I think that they wanted this to be a song that people would hit the dance floor no matter how silly you look while dancing. Basically everybody should have the experience having the fun and joy of dancing without any judgement.
This song is pure art. It is a Masterpiece. They joined a legendary funky bassist (Bootsy Collin’s), a legendary soul saxophonist (Maceo Parker), a brilliant hip hop guy (Q Tip), an American singer, a Russian dj, a Japanese dj, and a slowed down Herbie Hancock’s famous bass line (“Bring down the birds”), mixed them all together and gave us this Pearl!!👏🏻👏🏻🚀🚀
Deee- Lite basically falls under House music style wise. Much of their vibe comes under that, this particular song is more pop for them and was their biggest commercial song.
The legendary Maceo Parker on Sax, the legendary Bootsy Collins on Bass, and yes Q-Tip from Tribe (at the time). Y'all nailed it as far as the timeline. This came out in early 1990 (recorded in '89).
This was huge in the dance club scene, but surprised this group never hit it bigger. The video was shown a lot on MTV, and I'm not even someone who paid much attention to MTV past the 80s. For a somewhat similar but better musicians group of that time check out The Supreme Beings of Leisure. Very similar vibe with a great female vocalist.
The guy with the start shaped sunglasses is Bass guitarist and Hall of Fame member, Bootsy Collins who played with James Brown in the early 1970s before joining Parliament-Funkadelic.
As an older guy, thank you for respecting our music, and the '90s in general. When you get to be old (like me), I'm sure you'll expect the same. Keep doing what you're doing!
I always wanted more from Dee Light, and we did get a little, but they weren't as ambitious as most of the soulless chart toppers; they seemed to be the real deal, music lovers who had their moment and didn't wish to outstay their welcome, or join a dodgy industry for the rest of their lives.
This is fantastic. Just makes me want to dig into the 90s vibe again. There are sooo many great hip hop songs from back then. Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Black Street, Tupac's California Love etc. Great era.
There's nobody back in the day that didn't love this song. Whatever else you were into, you still loved this song.
The guy at the record shop in Barking didn't when I bought it, but record shop employees are are prissy bunch.
Oath... full on metalhead, but this is one of the best songs ever made. Brilliance, makes me want to dance!!!

This song is widely considered the milepost for the end of the 80's and the start of the 90's.
In the 90s, retro vibe was a very common thing. This is one of the greatest examples.
The 80's & 90's vibe in this song were just mimicking the 60's & 70's groove period-- the true "mod" aesthetic after the hippy period. Thx, P & S!
Had the cd in college back then. Loved to turn it up and dance around the living room. Such a fun song.
