  • @fray3dendsofsanity

    People saying the MS-1 sounds "brighter"...it might be because the filter has slightly more range...if the knob was adjusted down a little bit to cover the same frequency slope. that would be more accurate way of comparing. Need a frequency analyzer to really tell.
    In my opinion, even if the filter is somewhat different, there's no way you would be able to tell the difference in a mix. Behringer is 95% of the way there and less than 1/3 the price. Better sequencer too. Pretty easy choice if you ask me.

    • @PerfectCircuit

      Many vintage synths were cheap toys in their day. Especially Roland. That’s how they got into the hands of the musicians who made them iconic. Now you are paying a premium on something where 90% of the value is in its reputation and usage by talented musicians. broken down to what it physically is, it’s a cheap toy shrouded in myth and nostalgia, but still a cheap toy. • @herberdth

      Noise transistor is different in each Sh101. Has to be carefully selected. The original "chip packages" have a huge spread. But are still better matched internally than earlier synths that needed matched transistors. Ms1 seems to have a slightly lower resonance but better bass compensation than sh101.
      Ms1 is slightly less rubbery so more defined in sound. 3-4 capacitors and a resistor or 2 and Ms1 is much closer. Hurray Maffez
      Sh101 pcb has no powerplane and only a 6bit resistor DAC for cv and that might explain a lot. Very cheaply designed synth compared to junos. Those choices made each sh101 special.
      I dont like that Moog sequencer in the ms1 much. Too many 2 hand Shift combinations. At least it's not only 16 steps. With new coolaudio ba662 clones mk2 can be much improved

    Different noise profile is evident. The VCO is otherwise close enough to say it's spot on. The filter on the Behringer sounds more modern and aggressive, the 101 has a smoother top end and low end growl. It's almost there but not in the areas where the 101 matters to me personally. Also, simpler sequencer operation on the 101 and the classic autobend omission on the Behringer leaves it out for me.

    Behringer fanboy confirmation bias is out of control in these comments. The SH-101 sounds 1000 times better than the MS-1/101 when comparing the two in front of you as opposed to listening to UA-cam videos. The MS-1 is a decent synth in its own right for $400 and certainly capable of producing cool sounds. If you put the Behringer up against the Roland there is no comparison. If your ears can't hear the difference, than it probably doesn't matter what synth you use. For those of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's using the SH-101 and listening to endless records made with them, we immediately recognize the sound of one and can detect the imitation. It's not musical snobbery, it's simply having an ear that hears subtle differences in tone that make a world of difference in the music we make and listen to.

      thanks, you put it in perspective; subtle differences can make big differences in the music.. not the other way round "you won´t notice in a mix". If you have a gorgeous magical sounding synth with 100% sound, you want to put it on a pedestal in the mix :)

    When all the Waveforms hit at 221 there is a noticeable lack of low end in the MS-1. The low end is what the 101 is famous for. BUT, it is a good bit more dough, depends if this matters to you or not I guess. For me the 101 wins.

    I often wonder if some synth hacker madman will find a way to mod the MS-1 to Darken the Tone a bit, and stop all these comparison videos forever on... There is a slight bright tone difference between the 2. That I bet a simple Mod would fix to darken things up a bit. I wait for this day! Till then I will keep my vintage Sh-09. For it sounds better than the both of them. Minus the Sequencer : )

    one was created, one was copied.
    I bought the one that was advertised in a comic book,
    the guy was playing it whilst on rollerskates (not rollerblades)
    I got the red one at Morey's music before sublime burnt it down, it cost 289.00 plust tax.
    It came with an awesome embossed angled suede thick guitar strap as well.
    so yeah, I prefer the Roland, if on principle and guitar strap alone :P

      @_EightySix 5 років тому +1

      @@motoboy6666 Unless filters are like wine and get better with age, I don't think age is big part of the difference in sound in this case. I can clearly hear that the SH is far more wet and fat. The MS has some fatness but it's more wooly than warm.

    • @KNHSynths
      @KNHSynths 5 років тому +4

      These comparisons have no meaning. Even the closest clone you can imagine can't be compared to a 40 years old original device, all components are aging. Even the original SH101 like the MS-20 or any other synth was known to sound differently from one series to another. It is stupid to take such comparison as a precise and objective tool. You don't have a time machine to test the behringer clone against a SH101 that will be just go out of the factories in 1982...
      So keep this in mind. All components are aging, so an original SH 101 from 1982/86 DON'T sound like a brand new one in 82/86... It even has been repaired, with components that are not the original ones.
      Taking at face value such comparison is stupid. Scientifically this has no meaning. Perhaps the behringer is sounding nearest to the original machine than the old SH 101 used in this video. Never forget that point.

      @@_EightySix Well its pretty objective, but to me the raw waveforms are pretty spot on. Noise is different, and its a big part of the 101 sound. Either than that, the ms-1 sounds a bit mer poliched/new, by a tad, again the 101 is an 35 year old synth. Saying that the synth are far from each other are pretty daft to me.
