      I'm glad they did too. I love the arpeggiated chiptune sounds of the SID chip etc.

    • @Prizm44
      @Prizm44 3 роки тому +2

      The C64 arpeggiated chord effect was popularized by british composers, and a couple of them brought the effect to some of their NES and Gameboy music (eg, Jonathan Dunn, Neil Baldwin, Follin brothers). Interestingly, despite the ingenuity of the Japanese NES composers, I don't recall any NES/Gameboy games where a Japanese composer used the effect.
      The NES also didn't have sawtooth like the C64. Instead the NES had 2x pulse/square channels, triangle, noise, and a sample channel.

    This brough back memories. I played in a band - well, a duo - back in the 80s. As well as my Juno-60, my mate had a DX21 and had borrowed his brother-in-law’s DX9, SH101 and crappy DR-55. I soon connected the latter to the SH101 to trigger some sequences and we played live on top of that. Then I discovered MIDI!

    During your section at 3:50, I couldn't help but think about how "chords" were made for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It used very rapid arpeggios to simulate chords because all of the oscillators were monophonic. Pretty creative if you ask me!

      @TomFrajer 2 роки тому

  • @svuwehemker8385
    @svuwehemker8385 Рік тому +11

    Sorry: The SH 101 had just ONE oscillator with 3 simultanously mixable waveforms, (incl. subwave) and not 4 oscillators! So, if you were looking for a synth to detune several oscillators, you had to look for another synth back in those days. A compromise was to modulate the pulsewidth via the LFO in order to get a more fat and sweepy sound, like a synth with the ability to detune several VCO's. Also that noise could be one of the LFO sources, which is still very rare was a great feature of the synth! You could make quite impressive thunder sounds wirh it!

    • @lqr824
      @lqr824 2 роки тому

      lol, I paid only 85,000 yen for a mint Mono/Poly last year, in a real wood case made of walnut. i'd rather have one Mono/Poly than three SH-101s. For a start it has oscillator sync options that SH-101s don't have no matter how many you get. Second, the Mono/Poly has the SSM2044 filter chip, probably the best sounding filter there is.

    8/6/2018. Over 15 years ago, I fantasized about forming a band with a pianist/vocalist I used to know and getting her this synthesizer (w/ hand grip and a strap) to use as a bass synth so we wouldn’t need a bass guitarist.
    At odd moments, I imagine assuming that post and would still dig having an SH-101 (or a more appropriate keytar).

    And then...
    I finally decided on buying the recreation by Beringer. I own it since two weeks now and I just love it!

    And I am actually really impressed on how well they do.

    Hi Claudio, thank you for the great video. Can you play muted notes on the sequencer of sH-101? Or only real notes?

    • @fuzz7boy
      @fuzz7boy 8 місяців тому +1

      @bernyboss yes, sort of. The SH-101 does not have any velocity sensing, so there is no way to designate that a note should be louder or brighter than any other note on its own (i.e. altering the amplitude or filter cutoff with the velocity). However, the SH-101 has a legato setting: if a 2nd (or 3rd) note is played before lifting the 1st note, the envelope is not retriggered. With the proper envelope settings, this can result in a "muted" 2nd note, as the synth is still playing out the envelope triggered by the 1st note. The sequencer can be programmed one step at a time, and each note can be optionally designated as if it were played legato, giving the same effect as playing legato live.

    Excellent video! I love my SH-101. I'm surprised at how powerful this little synthesizer is. Keep up the great videos. You professional set up for your videos is great! It is top class. Take care, Sam from machiwoomiapoo. :)

      Why do you say this synth is powerful? Can you name three synths it is actually more powerful than? What do you think is great about this video? I found that the presenter's remarks were totally unprepared, and the general format wastes a lot of the viewers' time. The first 50 seconds don't even start talking about the product, which is the opposite of great if you ask me.

      @@lqr824 It has that sweet LOW balls out BASS sound. It is more powerful than the MS-101, SH-01a, and the DX7. I always enjoy Doctor Mix's videos. I watch them because he has a nice relaxing atmosphere and is an amazing player.

      @@machiwoomiapoo I have trouble believing you'd be able to tell it apart from the other analogs you mention, or my Mono/Poly or Minimoog. I'm sure the bass is ballsy but I haven't met an analog synth yet that isn't.

      @@lqr824 the filters on the sh 101 sound completely different than the mono poly. And the Moog has a sweet smooth filter. Of course it depends on what year they were produced and which filter they used. I prefer the sound of Roland but Korg and Moog are amazing too. I would love to take a test that you set up on your UA-cam channel. I look forward to seeing it and taking it. Take care, Sam.

      @@machiwoomiapoo Yes, I've been meaning to make a comparison vid between the SSM2044 chip in my Mono/Poly, the famous Moog ladder in my first-gen Minimoog, as well as the digital filters in my old Fantom G7, new Korg Kronos, as well as my own soft synths. I find the 2044 to silky and wafting, like a dancer doing a dance of the veils. In contrast the Moog is very tough. Different but both awesome. I'd say the Moog is better for basses and 2044 prettier when you want pretty. All that said, I haven't heard a filter yet where I think, no, this filter simply can't be used for bass or whatever. They're all pretty darn close. A recent vid from a German magazine compares the Prophet 5 Rev 4 vs. the Prophet 8. In half the patches I can't tell them apart, or I think the difference is probably because they're not set quite the same. In the other half I can hear a difference, but its not as if one is good and one bad.

    Has also very nice deep house basses and garage square-basses and guitarbasses as well. But you have to know how to programm it ;)
    I love mine. Never had any technical problems with it. Although plastic, it's build like a tank.

    It actually only has a single oscillator that produces both waveforms and a sub-oscillator. The Arturia Minibrute is similar, that has 3 waveforms from a single oscillator and a sub oscillator

    I am not a keyboard player but I got one of those in 1983 and it still works pretty good and I used it to make some syhth solos in some recordings of my own stuff but specially good bass lines wich are really great. There's only one tinny litlle problem. The black touch in the middle (B flat) some times stops a little but with the HOLD touch ON it works perfectly, so if you could give me some advice to solve that problem I would be very greatful to you.

    I just bought the Behringer MS-1, but I should have gotten the Behringer Odyssey, which is more suited for the 70's classic rock style. Maybe I'll get that one later!

      Yeah, it's like the presenter doesn't really understand synthesizers. He also missed the sequencer, about the only feature of this synther that IS the tiniest bit "powerful."
