Don't let this series end with just a part 3. Y'all are really good storytellers and it seems like you have enough stories and ideas for stories to make it a regular thing.

Hey Shawn! I’ve been binge watching the podcast and loving it. In one of them you mentioned that there’s no way you’d put your oxygen mask on first, and I just wanted to pass on what my brother told me when I said that. He told me that actually the reason they tell you that is because without oxygen you’ll pass out long before you’re injured. So if you child passes out for a sec while you get yours on, they’ll be fine. But if you pass out while getting their’s on, you’ll both be in trouble. That made me feel a lot better so wanted to pass it on to you :) thanks for the great videos, guys! I love watching you all.

I can relate to the GED story and the fears involved. I had to leave HS due to some very negative social reasons when I was 16. 4 to 5 yrs down the road I was married and a mom. My father in law whose big on education kept gently pushing me to take the test. He'd purchased a great big prep book for me and I didn't want to dissapoint him so, I finally decided to do it. For 2 mo's I got up early every morning and studied from 5 am till 7 or 8. Despite all the studying I almost didn't go, I was so afraid of failing and feeling stupid. This was back in 1991 so, it took nearly a month to get the results by mail. To my great surprise, I not only passed, but did so with flying colors. The results are your percential ranking against graduating HS seniors given the same test. My lowest score ended up being in math where I was in the 86th percential, but everything else I scored in the 98th and 99th. I was so grateful my father in law gave me that push. I'd felt a lot of shame about not finishing HS so, when I not only passed, but did so well in all 5 subjects, it provided a definite boost to my self confidence.

Shawn, I had the same experience with education!!
I completed a full and complete educational course, years later I asked for my transcript. The school had gone out of business, didn’t retain files, and had no way to provide my work and my accomplishment.
Discouraging as that was, it fueled me to pursue my dream - attaining my Pilot’s license! Accomplished!! Passed my check ride, attained my PPL on 12/13/2021!
I now have a job in aviation, I married a multigenerational aviator and now realize how small a setback that was.
I love that you shared the vulnerable place you were in at that time, exposing insecurities that I too experienced at one time in my life.
As a strong women, it can be difficult to lean into another human when the weak spots surface. Keep appreciating the gift you have in Andrew!!
And keep strong in beings a warrior for those you love! I’d carry my man on my shoulders up the Grand Canyon if I needed to hahahaha
You two are so great! Stay close, love eachother like crazy and thanks for sharing what you do in such a real way! ✌🏻🤟🏻👌🏻😊

And to piggyback on the previous comment... I'm old enough to be your grandmother and am a retired teacher (32 years .... 9th grade).... I give you ALL the credit for pursuing your education through trying conditions. Not everyone would have such anxiety and guilt thinking they weren't good enough. Kudos to you ... and Andrew for throwing you over his shoulder! My feeling is it's not about the degree completion.. it's about the journey and the effort. You've accomplished both.

I live in Utah and was a recreation guide outside of Zion National park for a few summers - seriously everyone needs to learn from this story! I'm glad you two made it out okay! So many people die or nearly die hiking in AZ & UT at all the amazing parks because they don't know what hiking in a desert is really like. Take so much water, food, maps, first aid gear, and train before doing something big like the Grand Canyon.

Shawn, I wish you had someone to advise you about your GED test concerns before testing. I taught adult education for 29 years, so I had access to practice tests , so when my children reached 8th grade I administered the test to each of them with no preparation. They passed with high percentages. If you had studied, you would likely have had a perfect score! The number of questions needed to pass is about 65 percent. Unlike the majority of students who take the GED test, you would have been well-prepared without any studying!

I once hiked the 6.1 mile loop of green mountain in boulder and it was the most poorly thought out thing I've done. I anticipated going on just a short morning walk so I didn't bring or drink any water prior. I was rehabbing my torn ACL and studying for the bar. I got over the first hill and was like "one more probably wouldn't be a mistake." It was a mistake. I have never felt that thirsty in my entire life.

I remember watching this video and thinking you guys are nuts and are going to be in trouble. I have hiked the canyon 7 times and did run to rim once and it took our group 22 hours. We also trained a year each time, most of them staying at the bottom for at least 4 days. You are lucky you made it and it was not so much worse.
I can only imagine how mad and upset you were, also if they went out of business the Board of Education at least should have the records. Oh, so frustrating.

Shawn had every reason to be upset and prideful on them losing your paperwork in your high school diploma. Sorry but after 12/13 yrs of going to school everyone deserves that diploma automatically for free and not pay for it. That should have been given to you. On the college side from where you sit today and how successful you are. I wouldn’t waste your money unless it’s going to be used for something. I may be wrong but I watched a family member bend over backwards to be the first person to gain a degree in her family but guess what, she owes over 100k now to college and her job did not change at all since she and her husband own their own business. Not worth saying I’m the first to get a degree from college in my family when your stuck paying all that money for a piece of paper and not utilize the degree for anything. I get it if you have already paid into college and are close to finishing otherwise if it’s not needed why break the bank over it. Unless your employer offers tuition reimbursement that’s another good reason to get it on their dime.

Ha! Love the grand canyon story. Welcome to AZ 😎 the dry heat sneaks up on you. Have to be really careful. The signs arent for decoration we have so many deaths here in the summer time (usually hikers 🥲). See, humid weather you feel gross the entire time. But dry heat, you can still do stuff in an kinda feel ok. You sweat and cool. Until you dont. You go from feeling ok- to - not ok in minutes. And for whatever reason it hits taller people more than shorter adults. Kids though perish quickly dont take them out in our heat. Love your vids!
