I used to sell crocheted hats at festivals. that situation changed. I'm 71 and moved to a new community a couple years ago. Ive connected with my local library and teach two classes a month. I found a local charity which supports foster mom's. I spend the year crocheting all kinds of things for the children. my items are soft and are safe for traumatized children. last Christmas I gave them Six boxes. I'm also trying to connect with women who need the many benefits of crochet. I think of us as soldiers who help mend a bruised world!
this is so beautiful and I hope I can do this more in my life. i also sell crochet hats at festivals. currently I make winter clothes for the homeless but it's slow going and gets expensive so I only make a few things a year! i get yarn donations from people sometimes but a lot of the time the yarn just isnt ideal for winter, but i make do how i can. I wish more people thought like you!
I've been crocheting for 20+years and I'm surprised at how many people started right before pandemic and during. They all say what a wonderful benefit it has been to their lives. Enjoy hearing these stories!
I wished i had figured out crochet during pandemic and until now because for the past 3 years i felt like i have accomplished nothing...i am starting crochet but i struggle to wanting to document everything because i want to have memories of me doing it
I've been crocheting for just over a year and I recently picked up knitting about a month ago. One of the things I have noticed is that it helps me be less of a perfectionist! Making mistakes isn't as intimidating as it used to be because I can trust myself to fix and work through them. I also have grown closer with my grandparents, since we now have a hobby in common. We talk about what projects we are working on and my grandma even sends me posts on instagram of projects she wants to start! So grateful I picked up this hobby!
That is sooooo wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! If my grandma was still around she would be amazed at all the different crochet projects these days!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am 81 and had not done any crocheting in 15 years or more. My daughter found some of the yarn and WIPs I had stored. She encouraged me to take it up again. Now I have even more yarn. My BP is high right now and, crocheting relaxes me and lowers my BP. Thanks for encouraging all who discover you.🩷
Crochet was my saving grace. My grandmother taught me as a child and when I got bad off on drugs and finally got clean (3 years strong) I started crocheting again whenever I had cravings pr anything and now it's my main hobby and my therapy too
I definitely relate with wanting to crochet over cleaning the house so I made a rule with myself that I must clean the room I'm crocheting in before I start. LOL 🤣😝😅
I'm a teenager and started crocheting when I was 10, and I was in a really bad place mentally and physically, and it really helped/helps with stress day-to-day, and you were one of the people who inspired me to start crocheting! Thank you so much for what you do
You are adorable. At 65 I knitted and crocheted since I was 11 growing up on the farm. Grandma taught me to crochet with a cedar hook my grandpa had made her. You inspired me to turn my tiny guest room in my mobile home into a craft room really more of a yarn shop, using pretty colors so cheery. Thank you
My mother told me once that I picked up a crochet hook when I was 4. I watched her for a while then actually started to be like mommy and chain stitch. I'm a South paw so it was a challenge learning that way. When I was 16 I asked her to teach me how to read a pattern I found in one of her books. She's 80 and has dementia now, but she remembers how to crochet. I'm over 50 now. I'm thankful I have this time with her and grateful for the lifelong skill. I'm actually thinking of starting an etsy store.
Your comments on pushing through & not quitting when you’re not good at something “first try” definitely hit home! The perfectionist in me had to fight through a lot to learn crochet, but it has impacted how I view other challenges in my life- just like you said!! 😊 Being willing to make less-than-perfect projects as I learned the skills was huge for me!!
It's strange. I push through and don't quit so easily when difficulties but I'm also perfectionist and that doesn't bother when knitting and crocheting
I also struggle with anxiety and depression, and I have noticed that in the past few months that I've been crocheting regularly I am less anxious. I was starting to have a panic attack once, and started crocheting, and the panic attack stopped. I love how creative it is: I feel like I could crochet anything! I love the feel of it, and then it's so cool to be able to use something that I've made.
I hadn’t crocheted for a very long time. My daughter started to crochet about a year ago, and suggested we get together. We started Sip ‘n Stitch with me, my daughter, and my daughter-in-law. We get together once a month to work on projects, share what we made during the past month, and share new stitches and techniques. We share yummy snacks, and a lot of laughter and love.
It calms me. When I was married in my late teens, I went through abuse in a marriage, and I started crocheting when I was 18. I finally got out of the marriage and I crochet alot. I recently started Amigurumi and I enjoy it so much thanks to you 😊
I started crocheting two weeks ago, a complete beginner. I had tried knitting before and it just wasn’t right for me. Crocheting however has already started to change my life. I have Complex PTSD, major depression & anxiety and when I am crocheting I feel so calm. It has literally been a game changer for me!
I too have cPTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Chronic Fatigue, Arthritis🤪 and crocheting is amazing in it's benefits ! Personally it is better than most medications and othere therapies I have tried. My service dog finds my crocheting relaxing too !🐕💓She loves to lay beside me or on my lap as I crochet away.
For those of us with pain in our hands try Arnicare .... No smell and really helps. You can get it most anywhere. Awesome on healing bruises as well. Especially after the hospital.
These are all so relatable! Especially the mental health one! Something that brings me immense joy is gifting items for my loved ones, and now I'm able to give them unique, handmade custom items just them in mind! The possibilities are just endless!
I laughed when I heard the “vacation” thing cos I have noticed myself spending more time deciding what project/yarn to bring than packing the clothes that I will be wearing! Crocheting has helped a lot with my anxiety too. I’m so happy to have found a hobby that relaxes me but has turned into a business as well. If you told a younger me that at 30 I will be making plushies, younger me would never believe it. 😄
As a quilter, I can say that most of your observations ring true for a lot of quilters as well. (only with quilting instead of crochet). Your work is beautiful!
That's good to know!!! I always wanted to be a quilter, but I discovered that I don't like exactness and that crocheting was a little more portable. But I still secretly wish I was a quilter! 🧶🪡🧵
My weird thing is trying to closely examine people's hats and sweaters when I'm out and about. I also get annoyed when people confuse crochet with knit. My mother was a knitting enthusiast and looked down on crochet, so I'm a little defensive about it.
There are only so many crocheted blankets you need to make for your grandchildren, especially when you live in the south! So the way crochet has changed my life is that I’ve joined a group that gets together weekly to crochet baby afghans for the local pregnancy center. We talk about everything, help each other out with crochet problems, and also teach new members of our group how to crochet. It’s become so much a part of my life that I plan the rest of my life around it.
Crochet has helped my mental health.. I learned to crochet in 2016 as well during a time where I was in a really bad depression. It helped me come out of it.
👋 Me, too! Me too! Cringing when "accused" of "knitting" in public, yarn in the laundry room, no idea what the tv stars look like, help for anxiety... thank you for pointing out how wonderful the needle arts are for us!
I laughed when you said “When I’m crocheting and people ask what I’m knitting.” Sometimes when I’m knitting in public, people ask what I’m crocheting. Either way, looks like we both have the same reaction! 🤪
I laughed too. What is even more ridiculous is that I have seen crochet objects posted and the creator calls it knitting. That is more because the creator is from another country and doesn't know the word in English.
You are spot on with the reasons. I can especially acknowledge the fact of relieving stress. Either working outdoors in a garden, tending to flowers and vegetables or sewing or crocheting is great therapy. But, now, since i do not have my own yard, there is no grass or dirt to enjoy, i have begun again to crochet. I will tell you this, i never thought about making dolls and animals...untill i watched your videos! I enjoy amigurumi so much. I am working on lap throws and afghans too, but i enjoy the dolls and animals. Thank you Elise
Wow! It's nice to know that I'm not alone. After I caught my breath from laughing so hard, especially from your "I can make that" comment when you're shopping. 😂 I realized this video morphed into a real therapy moment for me. You've been blessed with the ability to not only beautifly create with crochet but also verbally convey the emotional connection we have with this gift. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤
I came across your videos looking for a "reason" to crochet. I am 75 and always wanted to learn but felt it was selfish. My mom tried to teach me knitting but was a disaster. I bought many books and kits but couldn't get it. I often quit something new because I am not doing it right or good enough. Now after hearing about your path I am going to do it for me. Thank you for helping me see that I AM GOOD ENOUGH! I have two kits and yarn to start today. I know this will help me with my mental health as well. 😊😊😊You are wonderful.
I have been crocheting since I was 10 yrs old, off and on. I rediscovered it when I quit smoking and needed something to do. Then later had 2 strokes and picked it up again. I am trying to make Amigarumi toys. I made a mint green mouse with a 6.5 crochet hook. He looks cute 😍 😊.
This is an awesome video! My mom taught me how to crochet when I was nine years old and I'm certain you can trace this hobby on my mom's side of the family all the way back to County Cork during the Great Famine (if you guys don't know the history of Irish lace crocheting, you should look it up). I'm 37 years old and I've been keeping at this hobby since. I am diagnosed with C-PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder, and I have crippling agoraphobia. Because of this, I always have a crochet project with me to help combat the worst anxiety attacks or something to ground myself. If I'm experiencing social anxiety, I'll whip out my crochet and work on it. Right now I'm really into lace crochet (pineapple stitch shawl) so it's portable enough to carry. Unfortunately, I have struggled with self-harm since I was 17, so crochet has been one of the many hobbies that have helped me combat self-harm. I'll crochet during therapy, my therapist says it's a great outlet and a great grounding tool -- it really is. So it's been a genuine life-saver for me and helped me through some really dark times because it's something I can do with my hands and focus on. I found your channel while looking up patterns during a terrible depressive episode so this video makes me so happy to see the changes it's brought you. And whether or not I have a son or daughter, I'm hoping to pass it along -- because the early roots of crochet were fisherman making fishing nets, after all, it doesn't need to be a girl's only hobby.
That is wonderful!!! I love hearing stories about the power of crochet on mental health, which in turn improves our physical health as well!! I'm so glad you found something to help!!! And isn't the history of crochet amazing!! My ancestors were from Ireland as well and I wonder which one(s) passed down that gene to me!! 🧶🧶🧶
As a man, I can agree. it's not only a girl's hobby. If it wasn't for crochet, knitting and tatting, I don't know if I could have made it to 50. And I don't care what people think if they see me crocheting or knitting or tatting in public. Surprisingly now, I get a lot of compliments. Back in the 70's and 80's when I first learned I was ridiculed and bullied and called a sissy. It's nice to see how the world has changed. I, too, have turned into myself in dark times. Then I've picked up my hook and just worked on something to take my mind off of things and it let me quit living in my head and let me live for the moment. Crochet puts me in the present when I'm doing it, but grounds me to the past of my family traditions.
@squeaky wheel, I'm so delighted that you tat! My grandfather graduated from medical school in 1910. He would relax by tatting. Grandma would crochet and embroider. My mother learned to tat from him. I finally was able to learn to tat. I do lots of types of needlework.
My daughter who was diagnosed 3 years at age 23 with Autism (high functioning). Her therapist actually helped make the arrangements to have her tested. I knew since she was a toddler that she had many traits, but she is also absolutely brilliant. During her therapy sessions, she would crochet. Her therapist actually encouraged her to do so. She explained that doing something creative while talking through things that she was dealing with actually helps the brain process the stress, anxiety, depression and/or trauma. She said because the brain is focusing on the creative outlet, it processes the "bad" stuff in a calmer, somewhat third person perspective, and therefore reduces the painful aspect of it to some degree. I know for myself, when I have long stretches of not being able to crochet(or other creative outlets), I feel out of sorts. It's something that brings me joy and peace, and a sense of accomplishment.
We live in a Universe filled with Miracles and Crocheting (Knitting) is part of that phenomenon where we can take yarn (string) and create something beautiful with it! Then, there is the Inner Miracle that transpires as the yarn makes its way through our fingers onto the hook or needles and gradually transforms into a work of art! Yes, you are so right. Crocheting or Knitting does change our life! This phenomenon continues to manifest itself as generations of crocheters and knitters have touched the lives of others through Charitable Giving of the works of art we create with our hooks and needles! Thank you for sharing not these "weird" but these "Miraculous" ways yarn can change the innermost recesses of our lives! How wonderful that we can wake up to this wonderful Miracle every day!!!
I’ve been crocheting for a few years but I’ve been chronically ill for 14 years now and crafting/creating things has helped me get through some of the hardest things that I’vehad to go through. I started out making bracelets in the hospital for nurses and staff with knots and embroidery thread. I did that for a few years then I did the rainbow loom rubber band bracelets when they were popular and now I crochet and try to sell some of the things I make because of my condition it makes it hard for me to have any sort of ‘real’ job. I’m happy to hear that crocheting has also helped you get through some hard times and still brings you joy today.
I love seeing the recent explosion in crochet popularity among the younger generation. I use it for my anxiety and it helps tremendously. I started 13 years ago and it has been such a wonderful experience. I feel so fulfilled and accomplished when I finish a project, and that helps with my confidence too! I can really relate to what you listed and the anxiety relief that comes with the craft. This video is awesome and it's so cool to see what a positive impact crochet has on people!
#10 Definitely is me. It has taken over my apartment. Bedroom closet, livingroom, hallways. and then the rest of the place is super messy cause I just don't want to clean up unless its related to my crochet.
I feel so blessed knowing how to knit and crochet, because I've formed many friendships. I like crocheting better because it's so much easier to take out mistakes.
LOL@ "I crochet toys in my basement" doesn't make people want to get to you know you. All that means is we just connect with others of like mind! :D My mom taught me to crochet when I was a little girl. I lost the skill over the years when I became an avid needleworker/cross stitch. But when I wanted to get back in to it, she came to some classes with me and fully supported my return to learning crochet. Now, it's something else we have in common and when all else fails "Meet me in the Hobby Lobby yarn dept!" and then we do lunch. I love that we have that closeness over a shared love of yarn and crochet. She knits too and I want to learn that as well. Great video!
I've been crocheting for like 6 years now. One thing I'm very certain of, is that crochet gave me space to think and to heal. Before I started crocheting I used to spend my days scrolling on Instagram/Facebook. I did have other hobbies like playing the piano or make digital art. But those things weren't repetitive to me. I had to concentrate on what I was doing with those hobbies. Crochet is very repetitive and I can just let my mind wander. So every time I crochet I just go into this meditative state and also think about philosophical subject a lot. Which allows me to heal my inner child and feel happier overall 😇❤️
I crocheted alot when I was a young girl when I learned from our neighbors on the stoops of Brooklyn NY. I started learning to read patterns and made several beautiful blankets for my first son from a 1940's crochet book! Raising 3 sons time was tight and I had a hard time reading patterns again. I'm older, kids grown and I read an article about a man in prison who learned to crochet and how it keeps him calm and it reignited my passion and I have been focusing on working out patterns and I'm back in the mix! It took focus and practice and lots of mistakes and perseverance and I very much enjoy you and your channel 😉
Crocheting is better than most medications in my journey with PTSD ! I wish I re-ignited this skill my beautiful Nana taught me when I was just a little girl years ago but better late than never. I lost my beautiful Nana last year and have been strugglingvwith my grief too and crocheting makes me feel like she is somehow still with me.💓I just love your channel. So glad I found u just a month or so ago. 💗🙏😊
Everything you said is close to my own experiences. Today, I am constantly surprised by myself. January 9 2023 My wonderful husband passed away unexpetedly. Though I have my good and bad days, as you can imagine. Support groups and Crochet have helped me cope with all of the day to day adventures. I love your channel. ❤
Very sorry to hear of your loss. Hoping this message sends support & comfort your way.. My friends husband passed in Nov. & another's is in hospice. I am not truly able to understand your grief, but I send my condolences.
Same with quitting most things I've tried after the 1st few times. I've stuck it out with crochet coming up on a year now & i learned as a kid. I wish i had had the opportunity to stay with it back then but am so happy I found it again at 51!❤
I love this! You made me laugh out loud when you were talking about meeting new friends and telling them you crochet toys in your basement🤣 I can relate to so many of these. I've been an athlete my entire life. Every new hobby was some sort of sport or athletic endeavor. In 2020 when everything shut down, even the trail I hiked on...I needed SOMETHING. A friend suggested trying crochet. I almost quit the first week. I guess the athlete in me pushed through. I'm still at it and am living all of the benefits you listed. Especially for my stress and mental well-being. I love creating beautiful things. I never would have thought I'd be a person who crochets. I just turned 61 last month. I am grateful to have a hobby that I can sit and do...although I recently took up pickle ball and the trail's been back open for a while. 😉Balance!
I love your videos. You are so real! Watching this, literally all 13 have happened to me!!! I started a few years ago after my daughter attempted suicide. It was such an emotional roller-coaster and I was just lost. I picked up crocheting again ( did it as a kid, but only made 2 row bracelets), and completely dove into it. I can honestly say it saved me! And the other 12 you mentioned are me as well. Lol. Thank you for your relatable videos! ❤❤❤
I have never been able to just sit and watch TV. I have done a lot of different crafts while watching TV in the evenings but never stuck with anything. I started playing video games while watching. I felt so unproductive 😮. Then I remembered the time years ago when my Mother-In-Law helped me crochet a little Santa and 2 little Snowmen, one Christmas. [I to this day still sit them out at Christmas] So I went to You Tube! It started with making “plarn” sleeping mats for the homeless. I had so many people collecting plastic bags and cutting them up for me. Then my charity for the homeless closed down during Covid. So now I am making toys for my 9 grandchildren. My once blanket cabinet is my yarn storage. I have not felt like I am sitting wasting time at all in the past 8 years. You are right! Life changing!
I learned to crochet by sitting and watching my Nanny. She was incredibly gifted and was the center of my world. I would crochet off and on from the age of 12 on. I was diagnosed with RA, Lupus and Lymes disease within a few years of each other. One of the significant side effects is anxiety and depression. I found that crocheting and watching my hands move brought me a calmness that I didn't feel otherwise. I NEED to touch my crocheting every day to bring myself peace.
I have been crocheting for many many years. I work as a night nurse and have a lot of free time between alarms aso. So, I always have to think of which crochet work I'll pack in my work bag. I often do smaller things, so I often have to come up with new ideas so I always have something to do in the night. But I love that I can combine my work with my hobby. It have been many things done through the years.😊
I absolutely loved your video. My life changed quite dramatically prior to the pandemic. I'm now a carer for 1 parent and I'm also alone in doing this. The pandemic made me house bound as my job changed and I tried it. I love crochet I love the process and I love the final product. I also get really fed up when I don't get my evening time to relax and crochet. It definitely teaches you to be resilient and not give up when things are hard. My mindset is so good because of crochet I managed to bag myself a huge promotion at work and part if the reason is self belief. I still find time to crochet and the best thing is, despite it being a hugely corporate job, some of my colleagues love crochet too and I've made new connections. 😊❤
This is so awesome!!! Thank you so much! I can relate to finding success aww we started to believe in yourself because of the skills you learned with crochet! ❤️❤️❤️
I agree. I retired during 2019 and wasn't really sure what to do with all my spare time. It was getting me down and then I discovered all the craftiness on UA-cam and took up crochet and knitting. I like both. And watching vlogs etc about like minded people is really great.
UA-cam has been such a wonderful resource for crafters!! Don't know how I would have learned crochet and knitting without it during the difficult season in my life! 🧶🧶🧶
I have been knitting and crocheting for over 40 years , but my love for amigurumi started about 10 years ago . Crocheting amigurumi is my happy place , it helped me to trough a lot of hard times in my live . I love this , it sounds so much like what I do . Always have to have something on the go , crocheting or knitting !! And yes I get that a lot to , what are you knitting when I am crocheting 😜 Thank you , see you next time 💖
Hi Elise. I'm Juana. I just LovU. You're such A Blessing to me & others. Well I started Crocheting when I was 4. I'm extremely over protective of Crochet. I don't like it when people ask me what I'm Knitting! I do what you do & say, "I'm Crocheting.. Blah, Blah, Blah. Crocheting is Sooooo Theraputic. It has brought me through some Rough Crap as a child & Teenager. Now that I'm almost 60, it has become the Calgon that takes me away!!! I toooo have & need more space for yarn. There's Nothing Weird About Loving to Crochet! I'm a work in Progress. God Bless, Love & Keep You. Juana
I can totally agree with all your points 😂😂 now when I go shopping,I don't go for the fashion shops I head for yarn shops, it's far more satisfying 😂😂😂
I started crocheting when I was in a kind of black hole of depression. It really helped me get out of it and I can live my life fully. Whenever I feel down and just want to achieve something I can pick up my hook and some yarn and finish a small project in 20 minutes. I loved hearing the ways crochet has changed your life as well!
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool knitter who started crocheting a little over a year ago when I was recuperating from a broken leg. I don't know that crocheting has changed me, but it has opened new possibilities for things to make.
I have crocheted for over 50 years, my Nan taught me. Now I have retired and I hand knit, crochet or machine knit every day sometimes all three in a day. It’s relaxing, helps keep anxiety at bay, I have lovely things to sell or gift or just keep for myself and it keeps me busy and my mind active. Keep up the good work and I love your enthusiasm 😁
My stepmother taught me this when I was young. I've ben blessed to share it with my children. I'm so glad to see how this has influenced you also. I broke my dominant hand, had to have surgery 3 pins and a plate, and I've had issues crocheting with it since, but I still try to fit it in. I can relate to everything you said.
I retired last year, and ended up having to take care of my dad. Thank God for crochet....which I have been doing for many years. One thing I have always dreamed of is starting some sort of crochet business. I'm now trying to narrow down what that business will be...I love so many different types of things to crochet, it's hard to focus on just one niche. Thanks for your very inspiring video and channel.
For me, the repetitiveness of making the same stitches over and over again, especially with a simple pattern is very calming. Almost a meditative process. It's visual, it's tactile, and for me, a very zen experience, I believe it actually helps to control my blood pressure.
I have been crocheting on and off since I was very young and my grandmother taught me my first chain. This past fifteen years it has become a constant for me, and I identified with numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11. Thank you very much for your videos. Your work is lovely 😊
I just got back to crochet after many years. I learned as a young child. I started back just before Covid and taught myself C2C by watching UA-cam videos. I retired last year, and this has given me an artistic outlet and something that gives me pride and a sense of purpose. I can't keep up with all the requests from friends and family members and enjoy the happiness my work gives to loved ones, sooo rewarding. I can relate on almost everything you said and am glad to hear I'm not the only weird one, lol.
📢 I CANNOT LIKE THIS MORE‼ Because I went through 90% of what you went through. I too would start things and get dizzy from the level of lost that I would feel that I would give up 😕 but now things are so different because of how many things I have HAPPILY completed and the cherry on top has been the calm that I have found 😌 I luv it!
Like you I was spending lots of time in the hospital or skilled nursing center caring for my mother. I had read all of the Little House Series to her, and I noticed that she wasn’t really able to benefit from being read to any longer. So I decided that I would teach myself how to Crochet while I visited with her, one weekend I pulled out one of my Nona’s 1950’s how crochet magazines and by the end of that weekend I was in love with the skill.
crochet has definitely given me more confidence! Same as you said I have learned that I can stick with something and figure it out. I taught myself crochet with UA-cam videos while I was recovering from surgery.5 years ago and now I don't have a commercial made sweater
I’ve been crocheting for 12 years. I learned from UA-cam videos. I’m right there with you for all the weird things except the last 2. Sometimes I wish I could sell what I make. I just give them away. I look at yarn and see what I can make and for who. I get joy from gifting what I make. I’ve made lots different kinds of items.
Hi Elise, you hit the nail on the head. I agree with all of your comments. I started off making cards and boy do I have a TON of supplies. I have moved from CT to FL 5 yrs ago. lol I used “PODS” to load my belongings. Most of the 2 PODS were loaded with my crafts. I moved several times here in FL each time I got rid of more craft supplies. Now the last several mos I decided to resume my crocheting. I certainly didn’t think I added that much yarn to my stash. Yesterday I HAD to organize the yarn as my daughter’s dog loves to chew YARN 🤦🏻♀️. I took some pictures to show my friend and she laughed so hard. Lol and guess what I was looking at this am!!! The adds for the craft stores. Well that’s my story. I’m trying hard not to get frustrated so I take breaks when I feel the frustration seeping in. Thanks for letting me share. Love your great videos Elise❤.
I started crocheting in my 20’s from a wonderful lady who worked with me she taught me so much but mostly blankets and I crocheted on and off .. I paint for a living mostly on wooden eggs but I do a little bit of everything. My granddaughter Khloe has always wanted to learn everything I could teach her so when I found you we both fell in love with the amigurumi and it has filled our life with so much fun. I rent space at a local gallery and I put 3 of her amigurumi and each one sold !!! Through your videos we found so many books and tutorials and patterns, thank you❤️❤️❤️
That is amazing!! What a creative family you have!!! And painting on wooden eggs sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing!! Tell your granddaughter congratulations from me!!! 👏👏👏
I've found that crocheting is an outlet for my creativity. I suffer from severe depression (and have to take meds) but having something to complete keeps me going. Having another crochet project I'm thinking of while I'm working on my current one gives me something to look forward to. My current project is a pullover (I think Americans call it a sweater vest) that I started to finish off all the 4-ply baby yarn I'd used to make a small blanket. Of course the thing got away from me and I ended up having to buy more yarn - and it's still not done! But I'm getting there. :)
I started my yarn obsession with loom knitting back in 2018 and it grew from there. Crochet is newer for me but I've always wanted to learn it and I did try as a teen to learn but I didn't really understand it until I started this year. Now I am very much still a beginner but I enjoy learning it. I also completely understand how you feel when someone asks what you are knitting. Coming from loom knitting which is way smaller of a community then crochet; people look 100% confused when they see me loom knitting in public. If they have heard of it they assume it's for kids and all that can be made is hats, and scarves which isn't true at all. I greatly enjoy your videos thank you for all your hard work.
Crocheting has changed my gift giving. I give my grandkids and fam things others cannot give them. I am lucky they appreciate the gifts too. Yarn arts, knitting National Parks hats kept me sane when my brother was hospitalized, enduced coma 10 days and in total 2 months of hospital and rehab facility care. Having my hands and brain busy with colorwork saved my sanity. I had very strong faith he would and he did recover! Thank you for sharing this wonderful vid!❤ ang in WA state.
I agree about how differently you see yourself and deal with problems, especially after i started making my own patterns. It has definitely made me think.out of the box more, and to learn to break down big ptoblems into simple ones and take things step by step. And i also hate it when people ask me what i'm knitting. That's one of my pet peeves! 😆
Just starting with my new I Pad so i am just learning to use it. I have been crocheting for many years, and I am now 92 yrs.old. I loved your show. Thanks much. just me❤
One super cool thing I learned was that while knitting can be done by machine crochet cannot. Crochet is always handmade. That makes it super special to me. Knitting is pretty, but I LOVE crochet (which is also pretty)! Crochet has always been soothing when I have been the lowest and exciting when life was pretty good. I have made commissioned projects, consigned some items at art shops, and sold a few patterns as well. As I was watching this I am working on the Persian Tiles Throw by Janie Crowfoot with glee! The colors of the yarn and the intricate details make me purr like a cat! The crochet life ROCKS!
I started crochet as a different hobby ( other then scrapbooking...that I stopped since😉) and divorced AMIGURUMIS! And now, making g them is a PART OF MY LIFE!, not " just a hobby" . At night, my bf come home from work and we eat together. But in the evening, I want to do as you and dedicate my evening to crochet BUT ALSO spend quality time with my lover! I feel guilty sometimes! But most of thebtime he ends up napping, exhausted by his work. So, I happilly and feel shameless to crochet while he re-energize!!! The other big thing it changed (counting all what you said too!) Its allow me to meet people with the same I terrestre S me, and sometime, eventually make real good friends, with is PRICELESS I wished my boyfriend watch that video....Thank you Elissa,,🌞
Love this! I can share that I crocheted 3 'Kidney Stone Blankets'...it took that long from ER to the stone extraction - and crochet helped my brain focus on something other than the pain [making the difference from the pain wratcheting up w/o interruption, to interrupting it as I crocheted and my body and mind relaxing so I wasn't chronically clenching in pain. It worked 80% of the time! It also gave me time to order more yarn, as I got a little panicky that I was running out of projects, and didn't want to stop crocheting...so there's that.
I'm 20. It helps me manage my anxiety. The repetitive motions just ease my mind. I started in high school when I was down for long periods of time due to a joint disorder giving me serious problems. It led to a knee surgery and crochet kept me sane through all that crap. I can't do a lot of the things I used to so it helps to have something to fall back on at the end of a hard day
😂 Oh my gosh, #8 is 100% me! I'm a bit hard of hearing too so when I have the television on, I'm wearing headphones and don't bother looking up at it. Same with thinking about making vs buying and the cost. I've spent a fortune on yarn for wearables when I probably could have just bought the item for under $20. Great list!
I’m going through a tough time i picked up crocheting before the bad thing happened but it has honestly helped me get through this and process my emotions
Ive non stop been working on amigurmi prolly been working to much and been hurting my wrists but oh well the mental clarity i get rn is worth it I’m working on a snoopy rn
Just be careful and try to take breaks!! I had months where I could barely crochet because of the injury! Slowing down just a little and giving your hands some rest may help you be able to crochet longer. I always tell myself it's a marathon not a sprint!! Happy Stitching! 🧶🧶🧶
I can relate to a few things that you have mentioned. Crocheting is my happy place! We had an extra room that wasn't really being used except for catch all. I did a couple of sketches of how I would like to make it into a craft room. My husband painted and put up cabinets and shelves that I ordered and turned it into a very nice craft room. Yes, I wish it were bigger but it keeps me from going overboard on buying a lot of yarn I don't need right now. Crocheting keeps me calm. It is something that I really enjoy and I forget about my health issues and what is going on in the world that I can't fix. Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend! ❤😘😊
I have never been able to crochet a blanket, my adhd won’t allow the big projects to come to completion, but I have made my son a baby groot , my daughters teddy bears, octopi, narwhals, and countless pot holders. They are all small victories that help when I get down on myself for my lack of follow thru. Being able to crochet the little silly stuff has changed my self talk.
Hi Elise, this video is good. All of these weird ways crochet has changed my life are so true! I'm 66 and crocheting amigurumi and blankets has me literally "Hooked" it's an addiction I never expected to have. Thank you for all your informative and creative videos.
Elise, you hit on everything the way crochet has changed my life too! Traveling, yes…I have my project(s) in a designated bag and I take days before planning & my list twice. I would be devastated if I forgot something. I wholeheartedly agree with crochet at night being a must. I’m with you there, I feel all out of sorts if I miss a night. I’ve even been known to take my project bag on a night out with friends.
I started knitting (I also crochet now as well) after a beloved pet died because I wanted something to take my mind off of the stress and grief. It's turned into a great way to challenge myself, especially as I now prefer crochet (though I still like knitting!), and it's helped drastically reduce my anxiety. Even if sometimes I struggle to focus enough to count stitches, the familiarity of them (especially HDC and TC, my favorite stitches) means that I can just sit there and repeat the steps in my head and then make something great, like a cowl or a series of granny squares. And taking something like stress/grief/anxiety/illness and turning it into something beautiful feels very powerful.
I've been making quilts for years. After moving with my husband to into his son home in Georgia which is big but for all of us but not big enough for my own sewing room. So right now I haven't felt like sewing but after watching crochet videos I have started crocheting..And I must say I love it. I need busy hands and this fits the bill.keep on encouraging other to do the same. I will back to quilting soon but not on a large scale. And the color choices of yarns are delicious
It is a wOnderful way to be creative; I started learning to Crochet, just a few years ago and I lOve it!! Now, just to convince my family, that it is not just for grannies, but all ages😅. I can see everywhere; how it has definitely stayed on trend; because there's always new ways to crochet different things❤. Thx again for a great video!
YES ! Crocheting being called knitting....& knitters who look down on crocheting. Crochet is a beautiful craft. I taught myself in 1971 w/a #1 steel hook & a ball of pretty blue crochet thread. It's been a passion ever since. And yeah, it's difficult to put a project down! "I just need to finish this row." .....then 3 rows later.......LOL Still crocheting. I find it meditative & relaxing. There are so many positive aspects to it. I love reading what other viewers have to say about crocheting! I've told you before .....love your hair & your glasses look great on you....the color, the shape....very flattering. Oh & the blouse you were wearing when working on the mini white granny squares....orange w/white flowers. It's so pretty !
Oh wow!!! You are amazing!! I love your idea that we are crochet soldiers helping a bruised world!! Thank you!! 🧶🧶🧶
That is beautiful and inspiring 🙏🏼❤️
this is so beautiful and I hope I can do this more in my life. i also sell crochet hats at festivals. currently I make winter clothes for the homeless but it's slow going and gets expensive so I only make a few things a year! i get yarn donations from people sometimes but a lot of the time the yarn just isnt ideal for winter, but i make do how i can. I wish more people thought like you!
You are an inspiration! And bless your heart !
I like the idea of people sitting around visiting and crocheting together. Like an old fashion sewing circle
I've been crocheting for 20+years and I'm surprised at how many people started right before pandemic and during. They all say what a wonderful benefit it has been to their lives. Enjoy hearing these stories!
Yes, it gained so much popularity at that time!! It was such a stress reliever for so many! 🧶🧶🧶
That’s right when I pushed through and learned! 🎉
I wished i had figured out crochet during pandemic and until now because for the past 3 years i felt like i have accomplished nothing...i am starting crochet but i struggle to wanting to document everything because i want to have memories of me doing it
I too picked crochet during pandemic and have never looked back
I started in the unwarranted incarceration period, too!
I still have blankets my grandmother made that are over 30 years old. Still look good!
I am 81 and had not done any crocheting in 15 years or more. My daughter found some of the yarn and WIPs I had stored. She encouraged me to take it up again. Now I have even more yarn. My BP is high right now and, crocheting relaxes me and lowers my BP. Thanks for encouraging all who discover you.🩷
That's wonderful! I'm so glad it helps! 🧶🧶🧶
Crochet was my saving grace. My grandmother taught me as a child and when I got bad off on drugs and finally got clean (3 years strong) I started crocheting again whenever I had cravings pr anything and now it's my main hobby and my therapy too
That is so amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing!! And what an amazing thing you have done for yourself! You should be so proud of yourself! ❤️❤️❤️
I definitely relate with wanting to crochet over cleaning the house so I made a rule with myself that I must clean the room I'm crocheting in before I start. LOL 🤣😝😅
Now that's a good rule! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm a teenager and started crocheting when I was 10, and I was in a really bad place mentally and physically, and it really helped/helps with stress day-to-day, and you were one of the people who inspired me to start crocheting! Thank you so much for what you do
Awww!! That's wonderful!! I'm so glad crocheting helped you through a difficult time! ❤️❤️❤️
I burst out laughing watching this!! All because it's so true!!! Most of your weird ways are so accurate to me as well!!😂😂😂
Haha!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you
Oh how exciting!!!! And thank you! 🧶🧶🧶
That is amazing that your mom can still crochet! That's so nice that you can still enjoy that with her! 🧶🧶🧶
My husband always says, I'm tired of all this yarn! I saw ok, Il try to clean it up.😌
🤣🤣🤣
Your comments on pushing through & not quitting when you’re not good at something “first try” definitely hit home! The perfectionist in me had to fight through a lot to learn crochet, but it has impacted how I view other challenges in my life- just like you said!! 😊 Being willing to make less-than-perfect projects as I learned the skills was huge for me!!
Yes!!!! I am so glad that I learned that lesson through crochet! Thanks for sharing your experience!! 🧶🧶🧶
It's strange. I push through and don't quit so easily when difficulties but I'm also perfectionist and that doesn't bother when knitting and crocheting
Loved this one Elise! "I crochet toys in my basement" You crack me up! Thank you for another lovely and entertaining video xx
Hahaha!! 🤣 I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! 🧶🧶🧶
That was so funny!! 😅
That is amazing!!!! Crochet is such a powerful and creative tool that helps us in so many ways!! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
That is so wonderful!!!! 🧶🧶🧶
It calms me. When I was married in my late teens, I went through abuse in a marriage, and I started crocheting when I was 18. I finally got out of the marriage and I crochet alot. I recently started Amigurumi and I enjoy it so much thanks to you 😊
Bless your heart. I'm so glad that you continued crocheting and that it helps you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I started crocheting two weeks ago, a complete beginner. I had tried knitting before and it just wasn’t right for me. Crocheting however has already started to change my life. I have Complex PTSD, major depression & anxiety and when I am crocheting I feel so calm. It has literally been a game changer for me!
This makes me so happy to read!!! 🧶🧶🧶
I have noticed more men picking it up. It really helps me to relax.
That is wonderful!!! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I love giving away what I make.
Right!?!?! I can't believe I'm doing this as a business either! It's amazing! 🧶🧶🧶
Haha!!! I've done the same thing... trying not to stare at a gorgeous sweater or trying to figure out if a hat was handmade!! 😂😂😂
That is wonderful!!!! 💗💗💗
Crochet saved me. In 2019 my son was diagnosed terminal and I was lost. Crochet was a way to be at peace when I could and find strength.
My heart breaks for you and your family. I'm so glad that crochet helps you. ❤️❤️❤️
Crochet has helped my mental health.. I learned to crochet in 2016 as well during a time where I was in a really bad depression. It helped me come out of it.
I'm so glad it helped you!! Crochet is so powerful in so many different ways! 🧶🧶🧶
👋 Me, too! Me too! Cringing when "accused" of "knitting" in public, yarn in the laundry room, no idea what the tv stars look like, help for anxiety... thank you for pointing out how wonderful the needle arts are for us!
So glad you could relate!! 🧶🧶🧶
I laughed when you said “When I’m crocheting and people ask what I’m knitting.” Sometimes when I’m knitting in public, people ask what I’m crocheting. Either way, looks like we both have the same reaction! 🤪
Haha!! I know people are just interested and they don't know the terminology! It makes me laugh! 😂
My husband will say I am knitting while I crochet because he know it irritates me.😂
In the 80s there was a commercial that had women "quilting ". The cartoon image showed women knitting!
I laughed too. What is even more ridiculous is that I have seen crochet objects posted and the creator calls it knitting. That is more because the creator is from another country and doesn't know the word in English.
@@BeeinTX Mine does the same thing!! LOL
I'm so glad you have your own creative outlet!!! I do love being out in my yard too!! Amigurumi is so much fun!! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet thank you for replying. I may have accidently hit the thumbs down key. Please ignore that one.
Awww! Thank you so much! 🧶🧶🧶
@@susanmckay8638 Good for you!! Do it for yourself, you are good enough!!
So glad you're able to crochet!! 🧶🧶🧶
I truly enjoy your honesty about your crochet experience! Thanks for your videos!
You're so welcome! 🧶🧶🧶
It gives me a huge sense of achievement, makes me feel grounded and is wierdly very therapeutic. I love it!
Yes! ❤
I can definitely relate to all of these. We would definitely be crochet friends ❤
Thank you!! ❤️
@@xtroupax Thank you so much for sharing your experience!! I really appreciate the time you took to share your story with us!
Awww!! Thank you, Michele, for your beautiful perspective!! ✨✨✨
That is wonderful!! This is why I love crocheting so much! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
It is wonderful to see all the young people picking up crochet!! 🧶🧶🧶
Oh bless you for saying your house is not so much a priority anymore! I can so relate to that one😂 who wants to clean when you can create💓💓💓
Yes!!! 😂
#10 Definitely is me. It has taken over my apartment. Bedroom closet, livingroom, hallways. and then the rest of the place is super messy cause I just don't want to clean up unless its related to my crochet.
😂😂😂 I totally understand!! 🧶🧶🧶
I relate to #9 . I will leave my house messier just to crochet!! And #11 help me to relax & mentally unwind!😁💜
Yes! I'm happier and I don't care that everything isn't always as clean as it used to be! ❤️
I feel so blessed knowing how to knit and crochet, because I've formed many friendships. I like crocheting better because it's so much easier to take out mistakes.
I love being able to do both as well! 🧶🧶🧶
Awwww! That's awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I love this! Crochet has had a profound effect on me as well! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so glad you have rediscovered crochet! I also saw that article!! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so sorry about your Nana. I'm so glad you feel her close by when you crochet! 🧶🧶🧶
I am so very sorry for your tremendous loss. My heart breaks for your I'm so glad you have found that crochet helps. 🧶🧶🧶
I wish i had had the opportunity to stay with it back then but am so happy I found it again at 51!❤
That is wonderful!! 🧶🧶🧶
😉Balance!
Thank you for sharing!! It's wonderful to see how many people turned to crochet in 2020. I'm so glad you have all your activities available now!! 🧶🧶🧶
Oh my goodness. My heart goes out to you. There's nothing harder than watching your child suffer. I hope you are all healing. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@EliseRoseCrochet Thank you! It's a slow journey, but we are in a better place than we were!
May your daughter discover hope, laughter and the feeling of being connected and loved❤ again so that you all can heal together.
@ElinT13 Thank you so much!!♥️♥️
I have never been able to just sit and watch TV.
That's awesome!!! Yes, crocheting is productive and keeps those hands busy!! 🧶🧶🧶
Elise! You are not weird. This behavior is totally normal!! Plus you must pack back up yarn🤩
Haha!! I'm glad to know I'm not weird here!! 🧶🧶🧶
I found myself nodding in agreement to many of your situations. We are definitely all in a family of crocheting across the globe. 😁
Yes we are!! Thank you!! 🧶❤️🧶❤️
Elise, the scenario in which you described peoples mistake in the difference in crochet and knitting makes me frustrated too! 😱😭🤯😂🧶
Yes!!! 😂😂😂
I'm so glad it has helped you through such a difficult trial. 🧶🧶🧶
It have been many things done through the years.😊
That's so wonderful!! Thanks so much for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Started woobles 2 weeks ago...now I'm addicted. Tried gloves, flowers, shawls. I may have a wall of yarn now haha. My journey has begun.
That's wonderful!! 🧶🧶🧶
And yes I get that a lot to , what are you knitting when I am crocheting 😜 Thank you , see you next time 💖
That is wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing!! I have a love for amigurumi too!! There's something so special about it!! 🧶🧶🧶
Hi Elise. Juana
Thank you so much, Juana!! 🧶🧶🧶
I can totally agree with all your points 😂😂 now when I go shopping,I don't go for the fashion shops I head for yarn shops, it's far more satisfying 😂😂😂
I totally agree!! 🧶🧶🧶
That is amazing!! I wish more people knew about the benefits of crocheting!! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool knitter who started crocheting a little over a year ago when I was recuperating from a broken leg. I don't know that crocheting has changed me, but it has opened new possibilities for things to make.
That's wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful! Thank you for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am with you on each and every one of these!❤
Thank you! 🧶
Oh I hope your hand heals up completely and that you're able to crochet with no pain soon! 🧶🧶🧶
You're so welcome and good luck!! 🧶🧶🧶
For me, the repetitiveness of making the same stitches over and over again, especially with a simple pattern is very calming. Almost a meditative process. It's visual, it's tactile, and for me, a very zen experience, I believe it actually helps to control my blood pressure.
I totally agree!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you so much! ❤️
I can relate on almost everything you said and
am glad to hear I'm not the only weird one, lol.
Thats wonderful!! Thanks so much for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you for sharing how crochet has changed your life. For me I am more relaxed when I'm crocheting. Except when I have to frog then I'm cranky!😆
Haha!! Frogging makes us all cranky, doesn't it!?!? 😂🐸😂🐸
That's amazing!! Thank you for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Every single thing you shared resonated with me. I’m so glad I found your channel. God Bless!
Thank you so much!! 🧶🧶🧶
How generous for you to assist your audience into rethinking possibilities, and reimagining success! Cool.
Thanks! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm not crying - really. (Okay - I am - but I cry at soup commercials.) 🙃This was a wonderful video - poignant and honest. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Awwww!! I'm a crier too!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! 🧶🧶🧶
That's amazing! I'm so glad you found something to keep your hands busy while you visited your mom! I also love the Little House books! 🧶
crochet has definitely given me more confidence! Same as you said I have learned that I can stick with something and figure it out. I taught myself crochet with UA-cam videos while I was recovering from surgery.5 years ago and now I don't have a commercial made sweater
That's amazing!! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so glad you have found a creative outlet that helps your mental health! 🧶🧶🧶
That's amazing!! I've never tried loom knitting but it sounds like fun! 🧶🧶🧶
Im so glad your brother recovered and that you had something to get you through that terrible time! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you so much for sharing! It's incredible how crocheting changes you! ❤️
Just starting with my new I Pad so i am just learning to use it. I have been crocheting for many years, and I am now 92 yrs.old. I loved your show. Thanks much. just me❤
Wow!!! That's amazing! Thanks for watching!! ❤️
So happy you share your passion with the world! You are such an inspiration to me😘 Big hugs my friend!
Awww! Thank you so much, Katie!! You're amazing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Oh the Persian Tiles blanket is gorgeous!!!!!!! 🧶🧶🧶
The other big thing it changed (counting all what you said too!) Its allow me to meet people with the same I terrestre S me, and sometime, eventually make real good friends, with is PRICELESS
I wished my boyfriend watch that video....Thank you Elissa,,🌞
Awww! Thank you so much for sharing!!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's awesome! I've had two kidney stones the past 12 months and crochet has definitely helped! 🧶🧶🧶
KNEW there had to be such a thing as "stress-crocheting", just like "stress-knitting"!!!
I loved the way you speak
Can you make a tutorial for some simple toys (for beginners)
I have some in my Tutorials playlist! Hope that helps!! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet thanks🥰
I'm 20. It helps me manage my anxiety. The repetitive motions just ease my mind. I started in high school when I was down for long periods of time due to a joint disorder giving me serious problems. It led to a knee surgery and crochet kept me sane through all that crap. I can't do a lot of the things I used to so it helps to have something to fall back on at the end of a hard day
I'm so glad that crochet has helped you get through difficult times! 🧶🧶🧶
Great list!
I'm so glad you could relate!! 🧶🧶🧶
That is awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!! 🧶🧶🧶
I think making small toys takes a lot of attention to details! You should be proud, a lot of people would love to be able to do what you can do! 🧶🧶🧶
Hi Elise, this video is good. All of these weird ways crochet has changed my life are so true! I'm 66 and crocheting amigurumi and blankets has me literally "Hooked" it's an addiction I never expected to have. Thank you for all your informative and creative videos.
It really is so unexpected for me too!! 🧶🧶🧶
I totally get it!! If I have to sit somewhere with nothing to do with my hands, I'm not a happy lady! 😂
Totally get that! It really is a wonderful stress reliever! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so glad you found something else to keep your hands busy! I love that it's portable too!! 🧶🧶🧶
Show them all the young people crocheting on TikTok!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
