If I decide, after working on a project for awhile, that I don't like the project or it is boring, I force myself to pull all the yarn out and wrap it up. If I simply leave the project unfinished, it feels like a weight on my shoulders and causes me not to want to crochet.

I had a wool blanket I started when I was just starting and didn’t realize I needed at least twice as much yarn. I had done really well on the stitching but it had nowhere to go. I finally frogged it. I haven’t done anything with the yarn, but it is nicely rolled waiting for use. It is a better way. I didn’t do it with intention like you described, but i can see the wisdom.

My number one rule is not to commit to making something for someone else. I pick projects that interest ME and when I’m done with it I can decide to gift it to someone or keep for myself. Committing to knit for others creates all kinds of stress for me.

I had to learn it the hard way. I have started amigurumi for 1,5 month and out of all 7 projects 6 were for other ppl as a gift. The pressure of having to finish until deadline can take the joy away. Now I can finally start crocheting for myself and it feels amazing.

I have to remind myself that I'm not knitting from need, but for my own enjoyment and to learn new things. That helped me get over the idea that I need to be fast or that ripping a project back is a failure. I don't *like* it when I screw up, but I almost always learn something, so I count it as a win. It all works out if I'm patient.

    1. Give instructions a light reading (or watching) through before you actually start them! It helps with avoiding bumps in the road as you come up to quirks you may not have realized were there to begin with.
    2. Remember that it's ok to read patterns *slowly.* Efficiency isn't just speed, it's also getting things done correctly. It's better to go a little slower at first as you become familiar with a stitch or repeat or what have you instead of having to frog back repeatedly.
    3. Accept your personal limitations but keep pushing forward when it's reasonable. It's okay if you can't do/figure out something *yet.* We all have different paces for different things. Sometimes it just ain't time yet.

Something that’s been helping me recently as I’ve started picking up a few new techniques (tatting, knitting, bobbin lace) is that mistakes are not the end of the world, they’re helping you learn. I had to completely undo and restart a bobbin lace project because I completely messed up the beginning. But now I know what I did and how to avoid it in the future! It doesn’t have to be perfect right away; give yourself the grace to make mistakes. Learning new things becomes a lot more fun that way!

I love how these rules work for you! I used to keep similar rules, but a few years ago I burned out hard on knitting, partly from pushing myself too hard at it. It was only after picking up crochet and doing nothing but mindless granny squares for a long time that I found my way back to knitting. Now my number one rule is "If it's not fun, f--- it."
If I'm not enjoying a project, I don't have to finish it. If I don't like the yarn I ordered for that sweater, I can use something else. If an old WIP hanging around is making me feel guilty, I frog it. When I learn a new skill these days, it's out of joy and curiosity, not obligation. Me of 10 years ago would be HORRIFIED. XD But priorities change, and everyone needs something a little different out of their crafting. Keep the rules that help you enjoy your hobby, and leave the rest!

I like your rules! One thing I have found for myself is that I end up leaving projects unfinished for a long time, but eventually I usually get inspired to finish them, when I decide I want to wear or use them. My creative process is such that I either have 0 projects going, or 10! Working on several projects at once keeps my interest, because when I get tired of one, I can pick up another. I tend to go in phases of generating ideas, planning, and executing, so when I'm in a certain phase, I do it for several projects at once. I have too many ideas to only work on one project at a time! I also try to leave myself a lot of time if I'm making a project with a deadline, such as a birthday or holiday gift. When I was younger, I would get inspired to make a gift for someone, and then decide I had to make something for everyone else as well, which always ended up being too much. Now, I don't put that kind of pressure on myself. I don't make predictions about what I will get done when, and I don't tell people something is coming until it's done--also too much pressure. Keep 'em guessing! ❤️

Last July I lost my wonderful husband to lung cancer. I've never had any real hobbies and didn't have people to spend my time with. Being a widow in your mid forties is very difficult. I tried jigsaw puzzles, diamond paintings, needlepoint.. then one day saw a video on UA-cam on how to crochet. I ordered a beginner kit on Amazon and became instantly addicted. I needed that thing too to keep myself busy and found it. Now I even have paid commissions, I crochet every day and am still learning... I was referred to as an artist not too long ago and almost cried! I appreciate creators like you, spreading the joy of crochet! Ive taught 2 coworkers myself because everyone should learn this craft!

I've got nothing to add. I'm on day two of beginning knitting. My daughter is teaching me to knit a tea cosy for my Betty Blue Teapot. I insisted on pink beads (the cosy is purple). I have a total of two straight needles (no idea of gauge) and I'm so thrilled. When raising my daughter I told her about one group of friends sitting around talking and how one woman in the group was just knitting away and that every now and then, she'd pop on a bead, and all the while keep talking as part of the group. So on day two of my very first time knitting, I told my daughter, (who taught herself so that she could teach me) that a lifetime goal is being achieved after 40 years! We're both so excited and happy.

Fantastic video! One of my rules is that if I have to walk away from a WIP for an extended period of time, then I write down the pattern name and hook size on a piece of paper and then pin it to the project. I have set aside several WIPs for a variety of reasons and have forgotten the details necessary to pick up where I left off.
I appreciate the other posters who frog projects they aren’t in love with. It has only been in the last few years that I “gave myself permission” to quit reading books that I hate, are boring, etc. I think I’ll give myself permission to frog WIPs that have been languishing for months or years! All that yarn can be used for projects I’ll enjoy more.

Agree 1000% about the right tools. There's a lot of 'hack' videos out there with ideas to substitute tools, which is fine in a pinch but not sustainable. Same goes for your crochet hook, you don't need a fancy one but you need one that is comfortable. Your hands and wrists shouldn't hurt, ever, and if they do experiment with ergonomic hooks!

I am a one project at a time person, I do not have a yarn collection. It causes stress and anxiety (a reason why I crochet and try to knit). This is a hobby for me. I learned several years ago from my grandmother, mom, and neighbor. I was lucky to have them teach me. Now, I am the only one that still does it. I’m so thankful that UA-cam exists so this craft continues. Tools are important! Like most My fist hook was what we had Susan Bates hooks. Now there are tons. I use Clover Amore and Furls Streamline Wood hooks and ChiaoGoo Knitting needles.
Enjoy your journey! You will be amazed at what you can do and learn.

One major rule for me is that I no longer guilt myself for starting over on something when I don’t like how something is turning out. If I’m not satisfied with it, there’s no point in continuing as I am when I can frog what I have and start over. I will typically try to determine what it is that dissatisfies me first, then start over and try something different, even if it deviates from the pattern (if I am working from one), to see what **does** work for me.

Somtimes I just need to keep going or the project will never get finished. I have two things that have really helped me with my crocheting. First - I had to change my mindset that it was okay to frog. When I started crocheting I never wanted to undo my work - even if it was only several rows. I now have the attitude that if something is not quite right - it's okay "I can stitch it again.".
Second - I count my stitches - A LOT! I have gotten burned so many times by having to frog rows and rows of an item because I didn't have the right amount of stitches that I now count my stitches through most of my projects. I may skip a row now and then if it's an easy repeat pattern - but I count the next row to make sure I'm on track.

Always love to hear good advice that is applicable to any craft or project, and rule #1 really is true about anything. I only crochet and sometimes felt like my finished projects looked too simple or lacked all the fancy stitches that other crocheters added (I crochet mostly doll clothes, Barbie in particular), and it almost made me want to stop. Finally learned to make styles I like, pick colors I like, and that it was ok to make things using basic stitches. Just being able to sit down and crochet helps me relieve stress and in the long run, that was more important than making some fancy dress or outfit. I am still trying new patterns but now I feel happier with every project I start and enjoy the process much more than before. This was such a good video!!! Thank you!!

I've been crocheting almost nonstop since Sept 6th, 2022... so I'm pretty sure I'm an advanced beginner or at beginning of intermediate & have already faced every topic/rule you touch on. I'm sticking to pretty much Amigurumi for now but I've made a baby blanket & scarf as well. Am very much enjoying the challenge & hating the frustrations BUT I'm learning SO MUCH along the way. I've cried, laughed, & felt pride in these short 7 weeks and have put in countless hours mainly because I don't sleep much & I'm physically disabled, so I'm able to put in a lot of time doing it. I have yet to allow a day go by that I don't challenge myself. Maybe I should take a day & just make ALLL easy stuff & give my expectations a break.💝
Thank you for sharing your experience, expertise, & life with us! These things help me very much on my journey with crocheting.

That is wonderful!!!! I'm so happy you've found something that you enjoy so much! My only caution is that those muscles need breaks. I was like you in the beginning and crocheted many hours every day. I ended up with a nasty case of tendinitis and it took months to heal. Repetitive motion injuries are very common in crocheters. Just make sure to take those breaks and stretch those muscles!! 🧶🧶🧶

One of the best tips I learned was don't throw away old magazines. without thinking. Sound ridiculous BUT throughout my years as a crocheter I have learned that my tastes change and what you feel like making can change too. So when I get a magazine I look and if there are more than 3 projects that I would make now or see myself making I keep it. Do I still sort through and get rid of some? Yes. But that rule has saved me from huge disappointments. Some magazines make deals with designers and that is the only way to get that pattern so it's worth it. That may not be for everyone, but for me, it's important.
Thank you for always sharing your tips and tricks with us.

Great rules. One that I don’t do when doing stranded color work is to weave in right away. I’m fairly new to it and invariably I will see a mistake that I just can’t (won’t) let go… tearing out my work is so much harder if I have already weaved in my ends.

I think my favourite rule is just that this whole thing is supposed to be FUN! If I'm not having fun with something, I don't HAVE to work on it (or if it's a gift, I don't have to work on it RIGHT NOW, haha). If a project doesn't appeal to me, even if it's super popular or trendy, I don't have to do it (this is why I've never done amigrumi)! The other rule is honestly... that I don't have to get better! For me crochet is just for fun and for some easy blanket gifts. It's satisfying and helps me get off my phone. It helps me appreciate that progress does eventually lead to something being done. It's a form of creative expression and a calming repetitive task for my brain. But if I never get to advanced patterns, that's okay too.
I do love the advice to take time picking yarns and colours! I get so impulsive when I want to start something that I just have 0 patience and will do whatever it takes to start NOW. But I think I would enjoy the end product more if I just took my time to find the right material.

My favorite rule is “learn something new” I used to only work on very simple and basic patterns when my kids were little because it was just too hard to concentrate on patterns that needed a lot of attention and counting. Been knitting over 50 years - my first project was a blanket for Action Man, (I'm English, so your equivalent would be GI Joe" ? I'm female, & didn't do clothes for dolls😀). My first personal clothing item was a simple garter stitch waistcoat, which I still have.
I did a lot of mohair & intarsia knitting in the 80s - your weaving ends in comment made me laugh. I did an Xmas jumper with over 60 bobbles in a contrast colour. That was a lot of work.
Having the right tool for the job also rang a bell😄 I have had ME since 1998 & couldn't knit for over 2:years. I changed to using circular needles & haven't looked back. Although my hubby has broken so many of my needles I despair at times... I have always written down where I am in my knitting as I go. This is more important than ever now with the brain fog issues. One day a pattern is easy. Another day & it might as well be in hieroglyphics x😂 I definitely have easy things to knit, but I have learnt lace & shawl knitting mainly courtesy of the www.
I'm also not afraid to frog things if I don't wear them or they don't feel right. I don't seem to suit things knitted in the round. My biggest concern, (my #1), would be "am I finishing this project so it looks good" - this means I have a lot of WIP. Again, I have to be in the right frame of mind(ievnot foggy), to do this - bl**dy ME. As I've fallen & broken both my left hand & wrist in recent years, I like to knit daily if I can.
Colourwise I'm quite boring - I love green & orange. It used to be black, bblack & more black,so I've improved.
I'll check out your amirigurmi videos as I can basic crochet, but lack the confidence to do an animal, although I do have lots of patterns 😂😂😂 Plus I'm an ambidextrous left hander..... who can't always decide which hand to hold the hook in....
Please check out a great British designer, Claire Garland, dotpebblesknits on Etsy & Ravelry. She does the most amazing flat knitted animal patterns ever.

These were amazing tips!! Especially learning new things in your craft and being excited about what you’re making. I learned to crochet when I was about 9 or 10 years old, didn’t quite pick it up, but then my junior year of high school I fell completely in love. I’ve crocheted nearly every single day for the last 6 years. Amigurumi mostly, but other small garments such as ear warmers, hats, scarves, and earrings. You’re absolutely right, something that I took to heart from the beginning of my journey was that I never compare myself to others.
I have a few book recommendations and pattern designers that I would love for you to check out! One that I just found at Joann’s, was “The Complete Guide to Crochet Dolls and Animals, Amigurumi techniques made easy” by the Japan Amigurumi Association. I feel like this book completely encompasses crochet in it’s entirety and not just Amigurumi. It goes over techniques, stitches, how to read patterns and diagrams, how to finish faces (including different embroidery techniques and stitches with their names), and so much more!! 100/10 would recommend for EVERYONE that creates Amigurumi to have whether you’re a beginner or you’re more advanced.
Another book is the “Crochet Master Class, Lessons and Projects from Today’s Top Crocheters” by Jean Leinhauser and Rita Weiss. This book absolutely inspired me to try different sub-categories of crochet, especially the section of woven crochet.
Finally a designer that I feel you should check out is Crafty Intentions on Ravelry and Etsy, her patterns absolutely blew my mind. I’m not sure if it’s mob mentality from having joined her Facebook group, but her patterns are just so unlike any other pattern designer I’ve found. Most of her patterns allow you to completely change out pieces to make an absolute unique creature. They are also extremely in-depth and well written, if you do end up hitting a road block then you can go to her Facebook group and Crafty Intentions herself (as well as trusted moderators) actively help people through them.
I know this was very long winded, but I admire you so much for everything you do. You are my absolute favorite UA-cam creator, I literally watch my notifications like a hawk for when you post your next video! Anyway, thank you for another amazing video and I’ll be looking forward to the next!

One thing I do when I'm having problems figuring out a pattern is to take a break from it and work on something else for a while. I recently did that with my first attempt at tapestry crochet and when I went back to it, it was so much easier than I remembered. I think we put too much pressure on ourselves to always get something right the first time when that's just not how things always work. I've been crocheting since I was around 7 and there are times when I still have to frog something because I missed a stitch or did it completely wrong. It happens...and that's ok! We should give ourselves some grace. :)

Hi ,you covered it learning skills, colour and yarn choice. In two years I now make beautiful dolls and it’s taught me so much.Even with those skills I am just focusing on simple keychain patterns I have a comprehensive to do list of. Though they only take 20-30 minutes I break from my focus to do one that has a fun theme. I looked at Pokémon images ,saw Gigglepuff that’s easy so I made it

This was my first time seeing a video from this channel and loved it! Very well done! Your beautiful kitty was a fun inclusion and the rules presented are logical and useful. I'm only a year into my fiber craft journey so I don't have any advice besides choose projects that bring joy to your life. For me sometimes that joy is from learning a very technical stitch and sometimes the joy is from the amazing textures and colors of the yarn and fabric. I tried once to use a yarn that i absolutely hated the texture of and I dreaded picking up the needles.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! For too long I was afraid to try new things because I was always so worried that I wouldn't be good at it. Now I realize that improving those skills comes from pushing myself to do new things and practicing those skills over and over again. You can do it! 🌻

Lovely video Elise......my projects range from big to small so when I work on them it depends on the project....if i am making a mosaic crochet blanket it is about 80 hours work so I will work on this for a while and then switch to something else for a while....I also switch to sewing as well, as I love quilting, or maybe do some work on my tapestry.....I have also just started embroidery and a weekly pottery class so these are two new skills i am learning......I love learning new skills.....x

While talking about whether to rip out stitches a Craftsy class instructor said "Your stitches are not precious." and it changed my attitude about fudging my work instead of ripping out stitches and fixing a mistake before continuing on. That became my mantra. Your stitches are not precious. Your stitches are not precious. That made a big change in my crocheting and while I still don't like ripping out a long section of stitches I know that when I figure out where I went wrong and I redo that section the satisfaction will have been worth it.

I recently found your channel and I really enjoy your content! Your dolls are amazing! I think one of the most important things to do, especially as a pattern designer, is to take notes. Take notes on hook size, yarn brand, stitch count, etc. I recently discovered a two-year-old unfinished project and had no idea what hook size I used! Please, take notes!
