I used to use plain aluminum hooks. Then I got my first Clover, and I would never go back. I can crochet longer and faster now. I Love my Clovers!

The Boyd hook holder I tried it I loved it and I gave it to a 90 year old woman who was still crocheting and she loves it and helps her to guide her hook with no pain or cramping and her hand

I, too, crochet for hours. I finally found a place that was willing to make a custom hook that perfectly fits my hand. I love, love, love it. It is shaped to fit my hand perfectly. It has revolutionized my crocheting time and drastically reduced hand fatigue. They are expensive, so I can only buy a couple each year. But, it's worth it. I've used most of the hooks that you've reviewed. Thank you for the time it took to test all of these hooks and putting together the video.

2nd time learning as an adult and hopefully able to continue this time. I was debating between Clover, Tulip, Furls because I have a decent ergonomic set but it is rubbing on my skin and bothersome to me. Furls look beautiful and I thought I may possibly spoil myself if I looked into them and decided upon them. I use a neck lamp and I noticed the hook end seemed so shiny- no one other than you so far has mentioned that. Tulip rubbing I hadn't heard mentioned before and I noticed the label and wasn't a fan. So with all of that I have ordered the Clover set. Thanks for this review I appreciate it.

I will say with my Furls that it took some getting used to. Now that I am though I love my Furls. I have 5 Odyssey and one Streamline Swirl and I like working with them more than my other hooks. That being said, we're all different and like different hooks. If you're not satisfied with your Furls hooks you can easily return them and Furls will even send you a prepaid label and the box. They have a no questions asked 100% satisfaction guarantee. I had to exchange a couple of mine and it was very easy. Plus you can use that money on some pretty new yarn that you'll love.

I tried the Furls wooden hook, merely due to all the hype & people raving about them. I totally agree, they're really difficult to work with.
I've found Milward to be excellent.

I so much LOVE Clover hooks! After buying just one to try it out, I fell in love! The 'ergonomic' set I had purchased were just fine for me, I thought...until I had that Clover in my hand! Wow! Game changer! Sooooo smooth, and works any yarn like butter! I now own a complete set, and 2 of my best friend crocheters are now my Clover buddies, too! They, too, are amazed at the difference! Thank you for your review - I wanted to try the expensive brand, but now you've shown me they really wouldn't work for me, no matter how 'pretty'!

Holy cow, I just realized I have crocheted for 50 years too! I really did not think it was so long. But i have spent more time sewing, embroidering, quilting, and creating fine art, so now I am doing crochet again. Need to find what my arthritic hands (and whole body) can handle. I must create to live.

As a kid, I learned on Boye hooks (pencil grip) as well. Then took a 20-year hiatus to knit things as I thought crocheting made my hand cramp.
Then recently, I decided to pick crochet back up but needed new hooks. I picked up the set of 10 Clover Amour hooks and learned how to knife grip. Let me tell ya, I’ve fallen back in love with crochet AND I agree that my Clover hooks are still my favorite hooks. I’ve tried them all and always return to my Clovers.
I have huge man hands and the handles on the Clovers aren’t an issue at all.

I wish you would try the Prym and Tulips and let us know. I'm interested in those because I read that the hook was a kind of hybrid between the in-line Bates hook and the other type. Like you, I love love love the in-hook. So I'm going to buy one Prym -- those are ergonomic from Germany -- and the Tulips. I think you did have one Tulip, and the Japan was making your finger sore.

My aunt gave me my first clover set from Japan. I was about 12 or 13 years old. Now I use Susan Bates hooks only. One of these day I would like to try the furls hook. I also had to retrain myself on how to crochet. I use to hold my hook like a pencil. When I got tendinitis in both hand, I now hold the hook like a knife. I still crochet but not as much because I’m taking care of my mom. There is wood butter that you can rub on wooden hooks or needles.

I came upon your channel because I’m looking for better hooks. I bought Furls Streamline and have not been impressed. I just ordered a few other brands: Tulip, Lykke and Clover. Based on your review, I have the most faith in the Clover but we’ll see :)
For the Divit, one of my favourite crocheters, Tamara from Moogly, suggested trying to rub wax paper over grippy wood hooks. Might be worth a try.

The Susan Bates style is called in-line, and they are fantastic. I wish more brands made that style. The part of the hook where the yarn fits in is deeper and holds on to it better. I use the knife grip, and I prefer the Bates absolutely over the others. I think the newer ergonomic ones, like the Prym and -- I forget it? -- Tulip -- are described as a hybrid, but I haven't tried any of those yet. I've just lost my two Bates hooks I was using a lot, a 4 mm and a 4.25 mm. So I'm trying to choose either a Prym or a Tulip.

I totally agree with you about the furls hooks. A lot of people love them, but in my opinion they are just not a good value for money. They are waaaay to expensive. And I do have a feeling that it is the feel of luxury that draws people to them. In terms of comfort - they are not comfortable. They are also way too fragile - if you pay that much for them, you want them to last. It kinda feels like they're pieces of art that you need to display and not use...
Oh, and of course, J. Hook is the best hook 😉

  • @sarahjs

Hi Jeanne! I have had the same hook journey - I started with Susan Bates, graduated to the aluminum hook with the wooden handle (which I actually really liked because it gave kind of a balancing lever feeling) and then happened upon the Clover Amour hooks. I fell in love with the amour. 😂. They are so ergonomic that I barely have to grip it at all, which is great for my arthritic hands. Your assessment of the Furles hooks is helpful. I'd thought about trying one but after seeing reviews like yours, I think I wouldn't like them as much as I do the Clover. I do like the Prym hooks, which weren't available when you did this video 3 years ago. Prym are nice and I'll use them on certain projects, but I like the way the metal of the Clover slides through all types of fiber. Thanks for your review and I'm definitely going to check out your pattern for that beautiful scarf!

Thank you so much for your crochet hook review. I totally agree with you that of all the hooks that I have used, I prefer the clover hook hands down. I haven’t tried as many as you have, but I find a lot of difference in each brand of crochet hook & I also need one that is easy to use, doesn’t tire my hand, is reasonably light & has the bumps in the right place without any disturbance in the smoothness of the handle. Thank you for taking the time to do this review. Cheers 💕👏❤️🥰😊😍

Thank you Jeanne I have never tried a clover hook but I think I might go buy me one. I do have a furls streamline and I have a furls Odyssey and I would have to agree with you they are heavy and yeah if you're going to pay that much money for one then I do think that it should have been stamped on somewhere or engraved on the handle itself on the Odyssey I didn't like that sticker on the bottom either. After crocheting with it for probably about an hour I have to put it up because I have a rheumatoid arthritis and my hand start hurting. I aslo have two sets of Boye and I use them all the time. The only thing about Boye hooks for me is that they snag the yarn a lot.

I have found that Hobby Lobby has Yarnology hooks, they have bamboo handles on them, I use them all the time! They have the boye heads, and I don't have a problem since I started using them. I broke my right hand about 15 years ago, and I use the end of the bamboo and my little finger to roll the hook, as I hold it like a knife. That way I don't have to twist my wrist so much. I'm glad you made it safe thru the storm the other night, we made it safe here in Tullahoma TN also. Have A Blessed Day All!

I agree that Clover has some of the best hooks. On the clover hooks I really like the larger sizes with the plastic hooks. My favourite, but the smaller hooks are just a bit small. I am a pencil holder. My hands cramp after awhile when I am crocheting a lot. Need something just a bit bigger. I have invested in a few hooks from Leither Co.. I am going to take some pictures & email you a few I have found that work for me.

Clover hooks my choice! I've tried the wooden ones, started with the aluminum ones but they keep sliding around on me! So I don't use them anymore! Hi Jeanne, I have large hands and had great difficulty finding hooks long enough to feel comfortable, I use, several different brands, often in the same project, this helps with fatigue. The rubber handled Bates hooks are good and still available. I use rubber pencil grips on my tulips to reduce the rubbing. I have 2 furls that sit in my storage due to their weight. Great review.

That Susan Bates is a short shaft in a rubber / silicone sleeve. When they break the aluminum comes out and there is less than an inch holding it in. But I like them. Somewhere on UA-cam I watched some one weight their Furls. Some were a lot heavier than others. Now if we could just get clover to lower their pricing a bit for their sets and single hooks. Thanks for your opinion and taking the time to share .

Your review is 100 % logical to me , I used the plan metal hooks, the cheap version of the ergonomics, then my brother gifted me with some clover amour along with some tulip etimo & totally love them from the very first use, never used a furls never will, for me the search is no longer needed as I am satisfied with both the clovers and the tulips.

I have several different hooks-- even from England that are old. First, it depends on how you hold your hook. I have severe tendonitis between my wrist and elbow. I purchased several Furls hooks, because I read reviews, especially for health reasons. The odessey are beautiful, extremely to heavy, especially when your in a N, M sizes. As for the printing, they told me they're working on a way to put the size on the handle. I prefer the Streamline wooden ones, then Streamline Swirls(resin). I'm a knife technique person and roll my hook. Furls has a generous return policy. Yes, they're the rolls royce of crochet hooks. By the way I've seen one as high as $190+. Thanks for the review, VERY well NEEDED information. The 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼Until the next video🙋🏽‍♀️🙏🏼

Hi Jeanne, what a great review. I wanted to say that I do you my Tulip hook set most of the time (when they are not stashed away with a tip, lol, but my raised letter is in a completely different spot, it's on the backside of the stamped hook side at the bottom, not anywhere near where my fingers are. They must have changed the design or something. I have had my set for about 3 or 4 years now and do love it. I am so thankful you gave such an honest review on the Furls hooks, I always wanted one because they are so pretty but I never wanted to spend the money on them. I am so glad I didn't, although, I am sure they work so many people so thank you for that. I have had that Boyd ergonomic holder for years but I think I was using it wrong because my hooks never stayed put. So I will definitely give it another try because I do get pretty painful hands a lot due to the amount of crocheting. GREAT REVIEW.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Susan Bates Crystalites and all of her other ones!!! 🥰👍🏼 I would NEVER pay more than a hook is worth. I always check reviews but first I check with those I know that frequently use certain hooks or knitting needles. The furls I'm COMPLETELY on the fence about, I think they are mostly about looks and not about usage. Just my opinion. I can't say ALL of them because a hook should NOT be heavy. I'm not sure if I'm alone there in that opinion?🤷🏼‍♀️ plus it should be durable of course if it costs so much $$? The same goes with knitting needles💆🏼‍♀️.... 💎💎💎Great Review Jeanne!!!! I AGREE COMPLETELY with you!! 💞🥰👍🏼🧶

I really enjoyed this review on thebigger variety of hooks. I don't enjoymost big handles as I started with aluminum susan bates and I am used to smaller uniform hooks. You can always sell hooks for full price from furls and people who love will buy them up😉

I love my Boye 6.5mm hook...but...the printing on the thumb rest irritates after a while! Now I have a Clover hook and it's my new favourite! Thanks for this review!

That was a very thorough and thoughtful review. I appreciate the time that you obviously put into it, not to mention the money. What I took away from it was you are a very experienced crocheter and you were basing your opinion on what you've found works best for you. You seemed to give both positive and negative feedback for all of them, though very little negative if any for the clovers. And that is only fair. You weren't trying to tell others which hooks they should buy or use. Basically everyone will need to judge strictly for themselves. It's the only way to know for sure. Thank you, Jeanne. Happy stitching!!

I also bought some furls hooks, a streamline and a streamline swirl. They are beautiful hooks but I am having trouble getting used to them. I am purposely using one on a project to see if I can get used to it. I have recently bought some clover hooks because of you and another you tuber I watch and I absolutely love them.

I bought custom hooks because of my peripheral neuropathy affecting my hands. They are awesome. I can crochet all day with no pain. I just completed my set this week. Ready set go!!! Thanks for the review. Very informative.

I was a Boye girl for years. I bought a G size clover and fell in love. I dished out the 60 dollars for the whole set, and I love them. I don't use anything else. Oh my goodness, I was teaching a friend to crochet the other day and I tried the Boye, ugh....can't do it. Go clover go.

I learned how to crochet using those old Susan Bates skinny aluminum hooks in my hands would cramp like crazy. I saw somewhere that you can make a fimo clay handle and I put fimo clay on the handle and bake them. I created my own ergonomic crochet hook handle before they existed. Now I have every single crochet hook in the world and I love hearing your input about different ways that I can put them to work. Thanks for the video!

I do like to have your honest opinions in your reviews. Also, I have Fibromyalgia, so my hands and fingers are stiff and painful sometimes. I like the flat inline Boye hooks. They are light and easier to move in the stitches. I use rubber pencil grips over the hooks, which makes it softer and more comfortable.

Clovers..hands down, however, I find the plastic shaft on the larger sizes drag a bit. I have small hands and find the handles on the hooks larger than 6 mm are awkward to hold. I do have other brands of hooks but find myself gravitating to the Clovers for most projects. Thanks for your honest review of a broad selection of hooks.

Jeanne I totally agree with you Clover is to me the best hooks to use as a close second the Susan Bates with the rubber handle but only use this hook when the yarn is inclined to split. It was such a nice chat about hooks and from our podcasts the Furls hook is for the prestige and not the comfort xxx

I like the Suusan Bates hooks to crochet with. But my favorite is the clover. I would like to try a tulip. Boyd hooks tend to snag slot.

Nice review of different hooks. I use mainly Susan Bates aluminum hooks. I hold my hook with the pencil grip. Don't care for other hooks. But, I really appreciate your showing us all of threshold different hooks. Thank-you for sharing your thoughts about this subject today.
