While we have great insight into how secondary markets for OSRS operate today, one thing we don't have great insight into is how they operated between 2008 and 2011. In this video, I chat with someone who ran a gold-selling website during that era, and from it, we get a great perspective into just what Jagex was up against amidst the removal of free trade.

Not sure if someone has already said this, but there’s a good chance that the email you received was from another gold selling site. Happened often to try to scare off the competition.

What do you think about the current state of osrs?
Free trade was taken away but pvp worlds were introduced with hotspots like varrock where the more time you spend there, the highest your loot % would go up and people would camp in a hotspot until 100% loot potential and kill their friend for a chance at getting a random possibly high tier drop like an onyx ring or something. Any OG's remember that?

i find a lot of runescape players get into fitness later, both are a similar painstaking grind that overall releases a lot of dopamine when you see results

I resonated so hard with the part where he described himself in class checking his bots at home on TeamViewer lmaoo. Funny to know there was people doing the exact same thing the same way. I had my mom restarting my computers/bots from time to time even xD

Not RuneScape but I had a python script I needed to run 24/7 and I didn’t know how to code proper. I set a button that would reset everything and had my mum push it every couple hours.
This became so ingrained in my mums mind that 10 years later while she was house sitting for me she asked “do I need to push any buttons?”
Is it weird that just from the title that I cant tell if it's a teenager or someone who has done this for 14 years. It's weird having a game that can cause that type of confusion.

Used to be heavily involved in botting and rwt communities. iirc they did a few rounds of cease and desist letters but almost none actually resulted in any (public) legal action

I gave up my life of botting/hacking/goldselling in all games 4 years ago after doing it 15 years in all kinds of MMOs. Paid for my rent and car paypament as a side thing, I like how you dont talk about it glorifying it. Its fun when its not new but then becomes a chore. fear of leaving the house cause you cant take care of the bots and so on. Think my biggest RS farm was 43 and we had some buddys running some I had some on my moms pc think we even had some on virtual gaming servers LOL.

Also, no need for special software. You can play on as many accounts at the same time as long as your computer can handle running them. You just need to spam click the launcher over and over and it bugs out causing it to skip the check and allows you to log in on all 50 clients that loaded.

I used some of the bots shown here. In 2006-2007 I ran about 10-15 bots at a given time including my main account doing anything from cutting logs, running planks, mining essence, picking flax. All profits went to my main which is currently still unbanned on RS3. While my wealth on RS3 reached about 100M by the time I came back to playing RS3 that was basically nothing. Swapped all the gold to my OSRS account.
Everyone remembers pking back then going against someone with max gear and the second they die just praying you dont get 3 salmon. Then you kill someone with 3 salmon and get max..
When he talks about running them 24/7 and not getting banned he's referring to a time when Jagex were doing 'delayed bans', because gold farmers would create the accounts as quick as they would ban them they would instead mark the account with a random ban date, sometimes upto 3 months later before it would kick in and ban them, you could tell if your account was on this list because you would consistantly get one random every hour. I tried doing a bit of a farm although only with three accounts running at once, one on Rune Essence (Pre-Pure essence so it had 80gp-100gp value), it achieved 80-84 mining before being banned, another was on fishing lobsters, this was when Jagex added someone to unote them in f2p fishing, the account actually achieved enough xp to 99 3 times over before being banned, the other was cutting yew trees, I can't remember how far it got but it had well over 99 wcing, strangely that was only given a temp ban, likely in error despite clearly being from a bot farm, I ended up giving the account away to some randomer, no idea if he still has it or not.
nope hes just talking about the times before the nukes when jagex pretty much turned a blind eye to focus their time designing a better anti cheat system..When i first started playing, i felt burnt out from grinding for years already so out of curiosity, i wanted to see how the bots worked by using one.. I used one for about a month with no problems I was woodcutting on a fresh account til 99 woodcutting,95 firemaking, 80 runecrafting, 91 fishing and i was still able to log into it a couple of months ago when i tried..
basic bots with basic outdated scripts will get you banned.
thats crazy i got that same cease and desist letter too around the same time when i was younger i use to phish.

While it's not illegal it can still be pursued legally as a civil issue

I've never thought of it as illegal, especially with my setup. My friend and I have had a botting ring for years, and we've never received a cease and desist, or any legal notice for that matter. We also don't sell gold, just collect and split amongst ourselves, so that's also probably why.
I'm convinced everybody that plays this game buys gold. I've even seen high levels waiting for gold at lumby castle bank

I have a pretty good story about my early days on Runescape which eventually led to 2 detectives from Sheffield, on behalf of the FBI, coming to interview me at my friends house while I was wrapped in a duvet.

Way way back in the day I stumbled across a forum "hacker forum" or something, probably the stupidest name for a website.
I signed up and it was full of people who were trying to buy software to hack people's Runescape accounts.
I put RATs on people's computers and because free trade wasn't a thing anymore I would die with their banks to my account with 100% loot potential (EP it was called I think)
So fastforward to about 5 years later, and I'm hungover at a friend's house. Suddenly, the doorbell rings and my friends come in and tell me there's two detectives outside wanting to speak to me.
I was thinking holy fuck what did I do last night?
First thing they said was "you're not in trouble, don't worry." which was a big help.
They sat me down and asked me about . I was like oh yeah I know what this is, I used it to hack people on Runescape. I told them that at the time it seemed like most peole on the forum were using it for the same thing.
They told me a kid at university in Scotland had been arrested because he took PayPal money, and told me I was lucky that I hadn't done anything like that. Might have been to scare me, IDK, never looked into it.
Funniest part of the story is my poor mum. As I said I was at a friend's house, who lived down the road from me. My mum had sent the two detectives down the road to his house, and was obviously absolutely bricking it.
My mum thought I was an international drug smuggler or something, and the detectives told me I should probably go home ASAP nad explain everything was OK to her.
When I arrived at the house, she didn't believe me, and thought I was still selling drugs or something, and I was like mum honestly I'm not selling drugs it's just some stupid runescape shit, and she was like "WELL WHAT ARE THESE SYRINGES THEN" and pulled out my friend's teeth whitening kit (which admittedly did look like it could be used for something else)
I burst out laughing and told her it was my friend's teeth whitening kit, and my dad got home and calmed my mum down.
The detectives told me that it was all part of a big operation by the FBI into the hacking forum website, presumably they shut it down and gave various police agencies around the world the details of people to talk to about it.
True story.
Now explain to me, why would the FBI go to Sheffield?

Holy shit I had an email saying jagex threatened me with a lawsuit. I had no idea why and was scared. I looked for that email last week and I cannot find it at all!
We tried to do this with Azure cloud computers but Microsoft ended up with all our profits. Maybe cloud computing is cheaper now.

I hosted a flower fc back pre eoc and sold gold. I also got one of those cease and desist emails. I know exactly what he is talking about. I quit at that point so I didn’t care and ignored it.
When I was 15-16 I was invited to a "lure clan" of sorts, this was probably 2008-2009? We had an entire group that would lure people into the wilderness. Recently I had gotten scammed out of a gothans warspear with the leaf bladed spear before they made that untradeable lost basically EVERYTHING I had. I think they were like 5 mil at the time. I remember just being so mad I wanted /revenge/ and took it out on a lot of people.
My main goal was just to join until I got enough to buy another spear but it was WAY too addicting, we were making MILLIONS a day by teleporting them into the wilderness. A few people would sit in big towns advertising drop partys at POH's. We'd advertise them as 10 max or something so "click quickly" and a few of us would get teleported to the wilderness to show it was real. Where the rest of the clan would be waiting in a dot to just absolutely destroy them. We probably had 10+ people at any time doing it with probably 50 total in the clan. It was so easy we'd get 5-6 people every run. We'd spread levels out so no matter what someone could attack anyone. I remember some days I'd alone maybe 5-6 mil just over a few hours. Mostly small stuff but we'd get santa hats, stuff like that too. Since no one except the teleporter ever chatted no one could even know who the rest of us were except the person who got the kill so there was 0 ban risk for the rest of us. The teleporter always wore his party hat so everyone would know he's rich. We'd even drop stacks of gold before teleporting just to show you "can" get something". I probably made close to 100million in total over the course of a few months.
It eventually made me quit because of some guilt and back then 100mil could basically get you anything you wanted and it was so much faster and easier than everything the game became so much less fun.
Anyways I just wanted to share my story, I don't think I ever have. would be cool if you did a video on first hand accounts of terrible 15-16 year olds like me who scammed others and how we got away with it.

I quit when the trade limit was implemented. Came back to RS 3 three years ago.
