It will go full screen if the video is a widescreen aspect ratio. Some on various streaming platforms are a widescreen aspect ratio, but many aren't. It just depends.

You can, but for safety please don't watch while driving. It's also likely illegal depending on where you are.
How do you like it over the Tbox? I’m still using that one and loving it.
I like them both. I like the interface of this better, but the Tbox Plus allows more customization and you can do split screen with Netflix which you cannot do with this.
Jeff, i have a 2018 Range Rover. It has both wired Android auto and carplay. Works great on my phone. Support sites for both the P3 and carlinkit plus indicate support starts with 2019. Do you think they will work?
If it has wired android auto and wired carplay, it should work. I don't see why it wouldn't.

Call quality is solid, similar to the vehicle's built-in bluetooth

Hi Jeff, just picked one up with your link. I have about a 1 second audio delay (USB C to USB C connection). Any idea how to correct it?
Hmm that's challenging. There seems to be a slight lag with some of these devices, but it's not usually very noticeable. A full second is substantial. I'm not sure if there's much you can do in the audio settings to adjust for that. Might want to email ottocast
I have two phones. Can you easily switch between these? If not, how is that with the tbox plus?
And what is the connection time?
Yeah you just choose the one you want to connect to in the settings. It takes about 40 seconds to fully load the android system
hey Jeff, Do you use a hotspot? or did you put a sim card into it? how does this work outside of wifi like when driving around away from home
I use my phone's mobile hotspot. With samsung phones, you can set it to automatically turn on the hotspot when the phone connects to it's bluetooth. It works very well.
Is waze the full version like on a phone? Android auto version is limited, i want to use the full version like on a normal phone. Will this let me use the road closure function please?
Yes it's the full phone version of Waze

I think I like them both about the same. I definitely like the UI of this more. But the Carlinkit Tbox Plus allows access to developer options which allows more customization.

I tried a MMB Max and it wouldn’t play/show the lyrics in Spotify even after an update from the manufacturer.
I honestly haven't tried spotify, but the Tbox Plus does show lyrics in UA-cam music. I'm not sure why spotify would be different. The Tbox Plus allows you to adjust the screen min-width if you enable developer settings as well which can help with compatibility. They are coming out with a new version too with a HDMI out I'll be reviewing soon that should work with factory installed screens that have a HDMI input.
Hi Jeff. I love your channel and I love your honesty and clarity. I bought the Carlinkit Tbox plus - 8gb version because of you last year. I like it, but it sometimes feels slow. Anyway, I'm gadget crazy and I'd like to know more about this new android box. Is it slicker, more responsive etc? Also, would you know anything about the Europe sim card network capability? In the UK we have 3g, 4g and 5g for mobile data. The Tbox plus only supports 3 and 4g.
1. Does this Ottocast support UK 5g?
2. Can the Ottocast be configured to require a pin number on start up?

Thank you! I thin his might be a little more responsive. As for mobile network bands, it has LTE but no 5G. There aren't any AI boxes that I'm aware of that gave 5G frequency support unfortunately. I'm not sure about the pin. I think they have that disabled on these things so people don't accidentally lock themselves out.
@@TechnicallyJeff Thank you for your reply. My Tbox falls back to 3g quite often where I tend to drive, and 3g is being switched off this year, so I really need to find a 5g AI box. I use a standalone sim in it as my phone switches its hotspot off between journeys.
As for the pin, I have some cloud accounts signed into and data security would be a problem if my AI box was taken, so I think a pin is definitely required. I currently use an app which asks for a pin when I try to open certain other apps. Not sure how secure they are though.

@Dave-bo9uz what kind of phone do you have? I have my hotspot set to turn on automatically when my phone connects to my Tbox Plus Bluetooth.
Curious about this box… if your car gets broken into and they steal the box, will they now have access to all the apps and their logins that you have on the box? Meaning that I would have to change every single password to any app that I have on that box and let’s say my phone or tv or home pc? Thanks
There's no lock screen, but I think you can remotely remove access / factory reset the device in Google.
Great review. For those looking strictly for an wired to wireless android auto (without the bells and whistles) which adapter would you personally use?

The Carsifi unit I tested is really good too
Aawireless adapter was the first and really feature rich.
Yeah I had one of the first ones. It was good but the usb connection was kind of loose so it dropped too often unfortunately.
How does this compare with the Carlinkit tbox plus? which one do you think it's better??
Both work well. I prefer the user interface of this more than the Tbox Plus. The Tbox Plus let's you do things this doesn't though, like access the developer settings which is required if you want to make all apps able to use split screen. The P3 can't do netflix split screen.
Being this is plugged into the EV6, it seems it draws power after the car is turned off. Do you unplug yours everytime you turn the car off?
The usb port powers down after a few minutes unless the car is charging, so no I just leave it plugged in personally.
Hello Jeff, thanks, i just purchased this P3 device because of your video. So far so good but i have the same display like you have in your EV6 Kia, i have a 2023 Kia Sportage GT line but netflix and youtube is not full screen. What can you do to make it full? Any tips?
When you say full screen, do you mean it's not filling the display completely when playing videos? If so, that's due to the content itself. You'd have to be playing a video that is in an ultra-wide format. Some movies on netflix, prime video, etc are full width, but some aren't. It varies. I've had some fill the screen and others just fill the middle 3/4 of the screen.

You should be able to if there's an app.
Yes it’s an app called smarters pro. I can watch live tv and movies on my iPhone. Great for live sports

Hi I have a 2017 Landrover discovery with an in touch pro system, it’s has an hdmi port, but the unit itself doesn’t have CarPlay. Will this system allow CarPlay to work on this system? Many thanks
If it has a HDMI port, it should be able to be used with the HDMI out to display on the applicable screen(s).
If I have Android Auto and Spotify running, I turn off the car and then restart it, does the last function work or do I have to select it again?
You can set it to go into the last used app when it starts, which would be android auto

If I'm using something like Eufy for home security & I want to stream the camera feed to my car display - will this work?
I currently use the old Ottocast that only has Carplay & Android Auto, which obviously doesn't allow this.
If it wouldn't be natively supported, like say through a Eufy app, would it be possible to cast it from the phone display?
It should be possible. You may need to do split screen though so the aspect ratio isn't too wide for the app.

@@TechnicallyJeff I have to open my iPhone and open the WIFI until it is visible on the Ottocast. A pain having to do this everytime. I will install a simcard instead.
Ah gotcha, yes you have to turn on the hotspot each time with iphones. Android (samsung) users have the ability to set a routine to automatically turn on the hotspot when it connects to the bluetooth. That's what I do.
How does this compare to MMB ai?
For Mercedes e class w213 which has a really wide screen, will the Netflix fill the whole screen?
Is there a noticeable drop in audio quality?
Lastly, can you screen mirror from your phone as well?
Honestly never tried that one. It depends on the content. If it's filmed in ultrawide it will. If not, it will just fill the portion to make it as big as possible. No noticable drop in audio quality. And yeah it should, but I didn't test that piece personally.

I saw that recently. I'm not sure the easiest way to verify that to be honest.
What about notifications from your phone and insteracting with them?
Phone notifications don't come through unless you're also signed into those apps (other than phone calls)
How come none of the reviewers mention the audio delay sync in UA-cam? I want to see how bad the delay is.

Correct, it uses the carplay protocol to display on the screen so the vehicle needs to support wired carplay.

I personally use the Carlinkit TBox Plus. It costs a lot less after my promo code and it allows split screen with Netflix

Not for a full android system (Tbox Plus, P3, etc). Wireless Android Auto/Carplay adapters will connect faster, but that's because they aren't loading a full system. They just mirror your phone.

I haven't tested them specifically but they should work fine. Other streaming apps work well.
Another question…. Having an EV6 as well, I wanted to velcro this unit right under the USB port on the console. Does a small Velcro circle affect the heat dissipation?
Another question. Do you access the Ottocast P3 via the media button on the EV3 or does it default and take over the EV6 system entirely?
No that should be fine
It operates as carplay in the EV6. I have my star button in the center setup to load "phone projection" so it opens when I tap that.

I think it'll do normal video formats like .mp4, but I don't have the specs in front of me and don't see the video formats listed online.

Im trying to download some movies on to this P3 device by hooking up to my computer but it does not recognize the device. How can you transfer movies on to the hard drive of the P3 box?
You can use a micro SD card

No you'd need to move files to a micro sd card then to the device
@@autotaxmo if you able to use team viewer on it then you should be able to use file transfer option. I use an MMB 5.0, (no hdmi port) so installed team viewer host on it and connect using my laptop for transfer or install any apps :)

Personally I prefer the Tbox Plus I reviewed. It allows access to "developer settings" which means you can enable split screen on every app, including Netflix. The P3 doesn't allow that so Netflix doesn't support split screen.

I have built in Android Auto and Apple Carplay both wireless and wired but I don't like the limitations of the app? So I am wondering will this fix my issues ? Also will everything work together like music and phone calls now work seamless.
Yes this removes the limitations of android auto and carplay. You run the apps on the device itself. Regarding phone calls, they will work using the bluetooth app on the P3. Otherwise, everything should work fine.

I was just wondering if this pulls up the Apple CarPlay that is already available in my car stereo and am I able to use Alexa/Siri with this and use Alexa with Echo Auto and say, turn on my Ring alarm and or other Alexa driven devices and have Alexa or Siri turn on my SiriusXM?? I noticed NO ONE has this type of video!?! Thank you an thank you for your timely response
Thanks! It does work with Carplay but the voice assistant used with it is usually Google assistant or Alexa that gets installed on the device itself. I haven't tested it the way you're looking to use it though.

Of course! For SIM, it depends on the carrier. My hotspot works well.
Is the car charger necessary when using the USB-A connector? because the instructions imply so.
No it's not. I plugged into my EV6 USB-A port and it worked fine.
Good to know, because from the instructions diagram you get the impression that his is the way to go , Usb-a to usb-c with intermediate link to car charger connector. Did you notice sometimes the ottocast disconnects the car radio when playing?
Yeah I guess some car radios maybe don't provide enough power. I did not have that issue.
How can I connect it to my tv and download streaming apps?
You can connect it to your tv using a mini hdmi to hdmi cable. And for downlaoding apps, you use the play store or the apkpure store.
For Mercedes owner, here's the real deal on the Ottocast P3 for our 2024 E-class rides. Total no-go. Trust me, it’s a disappointment you want to steer clear of. If you’re on the fence, lean back. I’ve got enough proof to turn that maybe into a hard pass. So, before you even think about dropping some cash on it, remember, you’ve been tipped off. Ottocast P3 and Mercedes E-class 2024.. Not worth it, trust.

Is there a way to disable the factory split screen? In my vehicle I can disable the split screen functionality and it will fill the entire screen.

I did some research and it seems that in the Kia EV6, when Apple Car Play is active, it is not possible to use the Bluetooth phone system.
You have to use the Apple Car Play phone system. The problem is that the Sim card inside the Ottocast is only a card for data use and you can't make a phone call using it.
This means I can't make a phone call when the Ottocast P3 is connected to my car. It' a real problem.
I don't know if there's a way to configure it differently so that I can use the phone. I hope so.

You should be able to connect your phone to the P3 via bluetooth and use your phone that way. The P3 uses the carplay protocol to connect with the vehicle.

My Galaxy S24 Ultra is connected in bluetooth and when I open the bluetooth menu on the ottocast P3 all functions are disabled (contact/phone) and it says "use apple car play functions".
When I use the voice button on the steering wheel and ask a question, the answer is: When Apple Car Play is activated, the vehicle's voice assistant is deactivated. You have to use Siri instead.
Oh that's when you're using the P3 for wireless carplay. Yes, doing that you have to use Carplay for those functions. I don't use it for that. I run the apps on the P3 directly.

Yes the bluetooth to the EV6 won't be active if the EV6 sees carplay being used. But you can connect to the P3 using bluetooth for phone calls.
It’s a bit pricy, I do like the ui tho. Are you going to replace the Tbox with this?
Yeah I agree I'm a fan of the UI more than other AI boxes I've tested. And I don't think so. I use Netflix split screen fairly often lol
You can split screen netflix by going into android developer settings.
Not on the Ottocast P3 though. Android developer settings are disabled and not able to able to be access unfortunately. The Tbox Plus allows access the normal way (tapping the build number a bunch of times) which is how you can get split sceen for Netflix on it.
@@TechnicallyJeffdoes your work Tbox Plus do 7:3 split screen ratio tho? It doesn't do that natively that's why so unless you have a different firmware version or so.
Also I'm not sure if you saw any of my other posts but you do do Netflix split screen on the P3 but it's a little tricky to do so. Read my comment on the main page.
Yeah the Tbox Plus has "factory settings" where you can set the default ratio (50/50, 60/40, 70/30) with password 4545. Still trying to find that comment lol. Can you tag me in it? I'm not seeing it.
Good video. Seems seamless between CarPlay and Android. When I installed mine the other day however, I could either do CarPlay or Android but not both. Ottocast support said “
If you want to use wireless carplay, please click the "Multiplay" app and then connect the bluetooth on your phone.
Please kindly note that if you want to connect with a hotspot or wifi to play UA-cam or Netflix, please don't enter the carplay.
Otherwise the wifi will be occupied.
Then you can conencit the device with your phone's hotspot.

Why is yours so seamless?
I'm not sure what you're referring to. You're correct, you can't use the android interface at the same time as running wireless Carplay

@ 6:22, you show opening Netflix and UA-cam. Then @ 8:16 you're opening CarPlay. Then @ 8:48 you're opening up Max.
I cannot do that on my Ottocast P3.
Ottocast support told me "that if you want to connect with a hotspot or wifi to play UA-cam or Netflix, please don't enter the carplay.
Otherwise the wifi will be occupied."
So how are you jumping back and forth and everything still works?
Hmmmm it's been a little bit since I looked at it. You're right, I'm able to do that. What does yours do when you try that? I will say, Carplay is connected to my iPhone, but the apps are connecting to a different device for wifi.
@@TechnicallyJeff what other device are you using for WiFi? Is it a device in the car that then has its own cellular radio? That would explain why you can do both.
I have an android phone I use for a mobile hotspot.
Just got mine today. I have a 2022 toyota 4runner. It does not show me anything, not even the UI. I am currently using another ottocast product, the A2 airpro. If i reconnect my current unit, it is being found automatically by my car. Also, just noticed that under audio source, it is being displayed as ottoaibox. When i connect my current ottocast, it shows as android auto.
Hmm try disabling android auto. That might force it to use carplay to connect.

@@TechnicallyJeff Yes it is. I sent an email to their support person. I have not received any response. If this drags on, and I can not return this product, I may have to fight this with my credit card company.

This thing crashes on my Mercedes A250e 2020... although it worked fine in terms of playback speed in my friends 2003 Audi A3 retrofitted Android Head Unit with Car Play, But the CarLinkKit appears to work flawlessly with good picture but limited to 1080p.
This one had 4K picture but framerate stuttered with no delay on audio, but just stuttering fps which was worse in 4k mode. I thought it was just the car but the car plays the same videos fine with MBUX's video player, but MBUX doesn't work when driving nor does it even have youtube capabilities.
And I know its not the car because the CarLinkKit plays videos so much better.
I'm sending the Ottocast P3 back, there were even times where it freezes completely and I have to unplug it for about 20 minutes before it registers my screen interactions.

Hey Jeff, I bought the AT&T sim card, had it programmed, doubled checked with AT&T, everything is good. I cannot connect this unit, only my home wi-fi and my, works fine. ,leave the garage and it is off. I cannot get the sim card wont work, I cannot get any support from the company to answer the phone. Please do the world a favor and make a programming video as you do them so well…. Allan
I haven't tested a SIM to be honest so I can't speak to how to get that to work unfortunately. Did you setup the APN?

How is UA-cam music via Android auto? I also have an EV6 (gt line2) and have a carlinkit box with Android Auto built in. I get no bass in my meridian sound system with it. With an android auto adapter i get great bass but yet to find a box that lets me stream video and provides excellent audio quality through Android auto. Would love to ditch the Android auto adapter.
My audio quality is great with lots of bass with this and the Carlinkit TBox Plus
@@TechnicallyJeff Yeah I figured out I needed to turn my assistant off on the tbox to fix the audio issue. Now working great. This new box looks great but might have to wait for a sale. $500ish CAD is a bit too much

You can download videos to watch offline. Or you can use a hotspot. I use my phone's mobile hotspot and it works well.
You can insert your own sim card that has a data plan which is what I do on mine.

The Tbox Plus and Max have the same basic software and hardware. The Max (aka LED or Ambient) just has a different LED on the device.

Probably the Tbox plus because it costs less and it allows split screen with Netflix which I use fairly often. I do really like the UI of the Ottocast P3 though.

Haha yeah I get that. Do you have a way to check if carplay is full screen? With Android auto, the auto manufacturer has to have updated their infotainment system software within the past few years to fill the screen. Carplay has been full screen longer.

You may have to activate the verizon sim using a cell phone IMEI. Regarding split screen, what do you mean? You don't have the option?

There's one issue that I have with all these boxes, no option to have a clock on the status bar. Definitely Needed for our cars because kia/Hyundai dont have clocks anywhere but on this screen, i run a small floating clock on my status bar until these companies give us a customizable status bar. Could root it and run magisk i guess.
There is a clock in the status bar for this and the Tbox Plus though. That's how I access the time.
@@TechnicallyJeff when split screen is active i don't see any clocks on status bar, I've never have on any version. Even in your videos i don't see a clock when its in full screen. One only seen my tbox one time have a factory clock in the status bar and i could never replicate that glitch again. So i just have a small floating clock start up with system that sits nicely in the corner.

It's not on the status bar though, it's on the task bar(auto hides on fullscreen which was shown when you opened netflix) which i disable. I wish it was static on the status bar

Can the UI run on a USB-C monitor I have in my car? I use the monitor as my car display.
You should be able to using the usb-c to usb-c cable as long as the monitor is able to accept the input.
If that display is capable if Carplay then yes you could use a USB-C cable. You just have to make sure that monitor will supply enough pass through power to the P3.
The other way would be to use the mini HDMI out on the P3 instead but you would need to supply power to the P3 using the USB-C port. I haven't tested this out yet as I just got my P3 but I will update this if needed. I planning to use both displays at the same time eventually and this was one of the reason why I went with the P3 instead of the Tbox Plus.

Hey Jeff, I have a 2021 Sienna with a 12 inch screen in the back for entertainment for the kiddos which allows casting, is it possible to stream and sellect shows from this device and control it from the infotainment and this interface? Thx
It should be possible, but I haven't tested a setup like that personally

@@TechnicallyJeffI heard the older MMB units were 60fps. I wonder why they used Carplay as the base of this as it's Android OS overall. I do wish it was 60fps tho. 30fps feels sugglish at times. It's fine for watching movies but not so much for anything else.
I think the Carplay protocol is easier for them to code from my understanding. Personally I haven't had issus with 30 fps though with regular use.

Really wish you could have shown real functionality. I see no microphone icon. These ai boxes are all the same great idea but real life just a headache. My car already works great for voice assistant with android auto but I wanted this device so I could add non supported apps like the adb2 program. But then no voice assistant also how do you make phone calls never see anyone in the video demonstration with this always showing mainly now you can watch videos.
You can use the voice assistant on the device itself. I use google assistant. For calls, it just uses the bluetooth.

It can't send text messages from your phone or from itself using a SIM? If trying to from your phone, remember it's running it's own version of android. Unless you're connecting to it and using it for carplay/android auto, I don't think it can send texts like that.
Right after wathcing this review, and finding it for cheaper. I bought one. But...... It just is buggy. After using it for about four months. Ive got to the point that I just dont use it any more. Its stutters with maps. Its hard to connect with android. Its just not as good as it could be.

@@TechnicallyJeff Yes, its the P3 Android 12. Its unfortunate because I do like it, but has connection issues and stutters and someone wont even start carplay or android auto. Ive tested it in the EV6 GT line and the Bz4X limited

@@TechnicallyJeff I just received it a few days ago and I'm having some problems with the vehicle's voice commands or the buttons on the steering wheel.
I have an EV6 GTLines and a Galaxy S24 ultra.
When I want to initiate a call using voice control, the vehicle tells me that when Apple car play is on, Siri must be used. To do this, you have to hold down the button. When I do so, the Google assistant starts up, and when I ask it to initiate the call, it does so, but using the Sim that's in the Ottcast and not the one in my phone. So it doesn't work.
This means I'm not able to initiate a call using the voice command or the wheel button when the box is connected.
I think I'll return it to amazon. It's a shame because everything else works fine.
Yeah if you have a SIM in it, it will try to use that phone # account to make calls, not a phone connected via bluetooth. Just curious, why not just use your phone hotspot? I use my S24U with it fine.
P3 is subpar compared to the p2 pro. No custom boot logos. No notification bar at all. No firmware updates hard or ota. Only supports very small SD cards that must be fat 32 formatted. No USB support. Supposedly there was supposed to be an update firmware wise to allow larger formatted SD cards but that update never came for us customers. And no option to have a top bar menu with home and back. Only a floating button. And worst of all no option to use car gps signal
I haven't tested the P2 pro. It's not bad though.
They are less than £100 on Ali express for the better model and latest operating system. Everyone seems to rebrand and add triple the price. Shame on you

Did you return it? Sounds like you got a bad device. Many people have used it and it works well.
