As a Malverner myself I hope you had a wonderful time in our beautiful town. Fun Fact: If you carry on straight east from the Worcestershire Beacon then the next highest point exceeding the Malvern Hills is the Ural Mountains in Russia. Also the name Malvern comes from the Welsh name Moel Bryn meaning “Bare Hill”. In ancient times the Welsh Border was further east and areas like Malvern still reflect Welsh influence, especially as you can see wales to the west on a good day.
I've just left a comment stating the same about its Welsh meaning. Being a Welsh speaker, I translated 'moel' to mean 'bald' (pen moel, would be a bald head), but 'bare' is probably a more appropriate term for a hill. The world 'moel' also has taken on the meaning of 'peak' in Welsh, with Moel Morfydd and Moel Fferna being two peaks near my family home in Wales.
Do miss you England, I really do! Always reminds me J. R. R. Tolkiens Middle-earth! I was 27 when I moved and 37 when I left, thank you England... thank you, good memories and lovely experience, new friends and new places ❣️ 12:02 I thought it was Gollum 😂👌 searching for the - precious!
Living in Worcestershire myself I've climbed the Malvern Hills quite a few times. I've just returned from a week in Northumberland and walked a section of Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald Roman Fort. Well worth doing and the B6318 runs alongside the wall and has a section where the road is built on the wall foundations (constructed as a military road during the Jacobite uprising in the mid-18th C).
Placing the camera to show you coming and going means you have to come and go twice as far,. A worthy sacrifice. Thanks for the good work on land or water.
Now repeat after me: "Ich bin angekommen." That's what we say in Germany, when we have arrived. Enjoying your great vlogs on narrowboating, the canals and of course your van vlogs for some years now. Always a great pleasure to watch, even more so, because you are a true professional at what you do. Never gets boring. All the best to you sir!
David, Many thanks for sharing this Vlog. I am nearly 82 yrs old and found myself, like you, gasping for air.. Have passed through England (Heathrow, on my way to and from Sweden. Would dearly love to do the hike as you did, but nowadays even a short flight of stairs seems to be a challenge. So, if you don't mind, I will experience beautiful treks via you Vlogs. Thanks for sharing the beauty of your England.
Thanks for inviting me along, David, especially as it was you getting out of breath and not me! At 95, I get winded making my way to the bathroom these days, so I can live vicariously with you. May I tag along again some time? I can? Good - see you then. John, Ontario, Canada
You just made my day. I love it when you use your comical antics about the trails, hike, crawl and peaks. You certainly have a keen eye for details. Thank you so much for putting joy in my heart. Be safe and enjoy your life, Maranatha.
Absolutely beautiful scenery David .. I got a chuckle at you crawling up the hill.. Wonderful day for a walk indeed... to top it off... a cheese sandwich... imagine that! Cheers from Missouri USA
Wonderful, precious! Next time, go up with a well informed Malvernian for local insights and when you reach THE peak, suggest that as in life, there are much greater peaks for us yet to ascend. Chuckle!
Great video! You’ve been spoiled by all those flat canals! Lol. I used to roam the hills of Wales, Peak District and the Lake District back in the ‘80’s with some rock climbing thrown for good measure! Sure miss those times, thank you for sharing the experience, keep them coming!!!
How truly delightful! 😊The birdsong, the dappled shade and the wonderful views so fresh and green in the late spring sunshine were well worth the ups and downs. We were with you every step of the way,😅 we felt your pain, so thank you for the wonderful treat. 😊You must have been exhausted and ravenous after your climb though, so a mighty cheese and tomato sandwich you had followed by a chocolate little something was very well deserved I think.😁 You did good 👍👏👏
Very nice...beautiful scenery. You are very brave to risk your life scaling the peaks and dodging trolls and dangerous wildlife to film for your viewers. Thank you and look forward to more adventures.
Thank you. Why is it that whenever I decide to do that, hoards of people appear out of nowhere? I had to wait five minutes until they’d all cleared off!
I love the Malvern Hills. I appreciate them even more since doing some family history research and finding that my husband’s mother (who was born in Worcester) has ancestors mostly from the villages just below the Malvern Hills. Isn’t it odd how a connection like that can make you appreciate a place even more. Actually I’ve traced a line of my father’s ancestors back to Worcestershire too, interestingly they seemed to move gradually from Worcestershire to Staffordshire through about three or four generations settling in places beside the canals. I think there’s some social history at play there.
HA! Well done to the forgotten Vontrap! And 10 extra points for the fine use of the word "salubrious"! I had to look it up myself. Thanks for the edification and very nice views! 👍
Loved this tour! The scenery is exceptional. And I hooted when you said "je suis arrivé" and then added "as the Germans say." Speaking both French and German, I roared, but I could not comment anywhere near as well as deeffes did! Such a delight. I've missed reading your vlogs and I don't even no when the last one was, but it feels like ages! Thanks for taking us along!
Hi David from Spain. We live at 750m above sea level and the secret to walking up hills along a road or track is not to go straight ahead but at 45° to the direction of travel. That way the gradient is halved and it is much easier - the penalty is, of course, you walk twice as far - That's the way all the old dears (some as old as 90+) do it.
Wow! What a great walk! I like the gradual grade upwards although I had to laugh when you crawled up that hill! lol...mind you, I would have borrowed one of those sheep and ridden it down that hill! lol.. I did think 'I hope David packed a picnic' just as you said you wished you had...! What gorgeous scenery. The Herefordshire side is breathtaking. I found myself reflecting on your existential thoughts on why we always seem to look for a higher hill...I once read a book about that by David Brooks called The Second Mountain...! I think you would enjoy that one... it's about life transitions. 🌺
Another lovely video David!! Also as a Dane when ever I see videos from over there in the UK it always takes my brain a few moment to adjust to the fact that you people are driving on the WRONG side of the road!!
Those tree roots are truly amazing. You are such hoot. I think we could do this very walk with you every week and be totally enthralled. You have a very steady camera hand and that is appreciated it lets the viewers savor and take in the scenery you are encountering without making one dizzy. Stay well David and thank you for the wonderful slices of UK life you give us with such finesse and humour. Enjoy your new digs too!
The tree with the gnarly roots that you pictured reminds of the description of Treebeard from Lord of the Rings, and how the roots can break rock. Probably because you had just talked about CS Lewis and I saw Tolkien's name on the plaque. Thanks for the lovely green views!
Ooh, David, what an excellent episode! I thoroughly enjoyed the look around Malvern, and your hike into the hills. Thank you for the work you put into sharing it with us. I especially appreciated the look at the storyboards, which allowed us to pause the video and read the information. I must come for a visit! Onward
I spent five years living in malvern until about a year ago when I came back up north for work reasons. It feels like such a drastic quality of life change going from living on the foot of the hills into the concrete jungle. Your vlog has brought a smile to my face and has done a great job of showing off the hills in their full majesty. And well done for sticking with it and making it to the beacon.
Very nice to watch David, thank you. I may have gotten a little too involved as at one point I actually felt a little out of breath myself. Best wishes as always
Thanks to you David, every time I eat a cheese sandwich, I get you in my head saying "a cheese sandwich". I say it so often at work that two other people have started saying it now! Loved the video. Views looked beautiful, and the cheese sandwich looked tasty!!!
There must be a lot of beautiful walks in Britain! As I am suffering of KOL (danish for: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) I often just enjoy the look from below 🙂 Nice you took us along...
Originally just listened to this video while laying in the sun with headphones on. Now I've watched it and wow, what incredible views. Cannot wait to see them one day.
Hi Interesting hike , brought old memories. For another place to go, close to your ""land" home is the Birmingham dams in the Elan Valley. Beautiful country side , give it try.
I have that nursery rhyme playing as an earworm now. "He marched them up to the top of the hill, then marched them down again, and when they were up they were up, and when they were down they were down, and when they were only half way up, they were neither up nor down".
Best foot forward, stiff upper lip, shoulder to the wheel, never say die, once more into the breech, onwards and upwards, for God, England and Harry. All good encouraging things to recite to yourself on a goodly walk.
As a Malverner myself I hope you had a wonderful time in our beautiful town.

@12:28 Made me laugh out loud. So true. "For crying out loud. I can't be bothered. This is a nice peak.. this is a LOVELY peak!"
Freed from the shackles of the cut, I feel the whole world is now our oyster. Carry on sir, wherever the fates may lead you.
I always like the stationary shots with the quietly gasping intakes of breath in the background.
Oh this was lovely !!! And funny. "Just somewhere else" LOL
Placing the camera to show you coming and going means you have to come and go twice as far,. A worthy sacrifice. Thanks for the good work on land or water.
It really is the best sound track, small birds chirping, bigger birds cawing and the gentle wheezing of David in the background.
Marvelous! The tyranny of distance is nothing for the cavalier! Cheers

The soundbyte in the title screen is so perfect, always puts me in a good mood before every one of your videos. Thanks for another great one David
On top of the Malverns, all covered in wheeze, David descended in triumph to a sandwich with cheese... congrats David! It truly is an amazing view.
Excellent lyrics
I watched this again for the second time and throughly enjoyed the trip. It's nice to see pleasant weather in January, even if it is on UA-cam.
I am completely addicted to your delightful, informative vlogs....plenty of new bedtime stories to look forward to!

The Abbey Hotel. loved it there. Stayed there every time I visited with work. Malvern is awesome.
I especially enjoyed the crawl up the hill and oh, the constant panting was also a nice touch. David, you’re an entertaining fellow indeed.

Wow you have a CRT to maintain the canals AND a MHT to maintain the hills, sweet 😎
Trees have a firm grip on the earth, and a firm rip on the air. Gotta love 'em.
That's funny, I have been to Malvern (Pennsylvania) that is for training on AS/400 software back in the 90s. Excellent!
