  • Throughout the centuries and history, there have been many execution methods used to take the lives of a condemned criminal. Some of the most brutal structures include the Tyburn Tree, a triangular shaped gallows used during the Tudor period in London. However there was a colossal gallows and gibbet in Paris in France which acted as a sign of the King's power, and on this huge execution structure 45 people could be executed and displayed. The Gibbet of Montfaucon stood for centuries in Paris, and was a symbol of the monarchy's power and thousands of people were executed and then gibbetted on it.
It was where a number of the King's servants and advisors were executed on, and also a number of the French King's household staff were killed on it. The structure also served as a place where crowds would gather to see the proceedings, and over 3 years bodies would be held there and then many following this were given back to the family. The Gibbet of Montfaucon was a shocking and disturbing execution structure, which was one of the most feared parts of Paris.
