The kakapo is NOT normal, even by nocturnal flightless bird standards. It breeds only once every five years or so under normal conditions, lives for over a century, climbs trees, has whiskers, has forgotten it has forgotten to fly (it will jump out of trees and parachute to the ground trying to fly), and has a bizarre breeding biology.
Deoxygenation, he is refering to this :D ua-cam.com/video/Opv8vZ6RvB0/v-deo.html But ye Kakapo's still are my spirit animals xD....clumsy and in many ways embarassing, but still the best, most unique parrots in the world :D
aleks no on a New Zealand Recovery website, they have thirteen (I don't know of they are available) for adoption. I don't know how old the offer is since I could not find the date any where on the website.
They're not literally up for adoption, it's basically just like a donation thing. You get some merchandise and a certificate, but you don't get them as pets. The site says right at the top that there's less than 150 Kakapo, there's no way they would have them available for adoption, that would be insane.
I just love these birds so much. They look so fat because their wings are too tiny for their body, they still spread them out sometimes when jumping around. They got no natural enemies and mostly when scared simply... freeze. Poor things lol
They're like parachuting flying squirrels 😂 and I relate to their freeze panic response lool I feel bad for these fellas though. And they live for 40-80 years. That's a long time of living like that.
Oh my gosh, they're so freaking adorable. I hereby decree the kakapo as one of my new favourite animals! The way it used it's beak to shuffle up the trees aww 😆 it's really doing the best that it can. I wish they had an easier access to food though.
A flightless bird that adores food high up in trees and has to continually devote its mouth to stabilizing itself? I think the Dodo is saving you a seat on the bus... tell him I said hi
Lock Jaw well, fortunately for them although they can't actually "fly" they can descend softly by flapping. As you can see their wings have no long flight feathers so they're a lot like a clipped parrot. It's awkward, really xD
They look so adorable and clever at the same time. Nature keeps on surprising us. Ils ont l'air aussi mignons qu'intelligents. La nature ne cesse de nous surprendre.
I'm not saying that we're taking the wrong tack here. But if people started marketing kakapos as pets they'd definitely not be going extinct. They're basically cats. With feathers.

For those worried about these lil fellas, this is on Wikipedia: "An abundance of rimu fruit and the introduction of several new technologies have helped make 2019 the best breeding season on record, with over 200 eggs laid and 46 chicks already hatched as of March 1. According to the Kakapo Recovery Team at the New Zealand Department of Conservation this has been the earliest and longest breeding season yet." They have a chance!!
Evolution demanded that the best traits for an island with few predators was to redirect energy from flying to nocturnal traits and breed slowly to prevent overgrazing the food supplies. Kakapo used to be literally everywhere in New Zealand, they were perfectly adapted for it. They just had no defenses against mammalian predators.
I'm can't understand it! Here in Australia we have the most species of parrots in the whole world. They're big; they're small; they're beautiful, curious and friendly......but its this chubby green New Zealander that has won my heart! Luv em luvem luv em! ❤❤
