I started trout fishing in 1978.Trout are my favorite fish to catch with always plenty of action. You know he is hooked when you see that white belly rolling around. I also love to catch brookies and brownies.Trout are also my favorite fish to eat.In the mountains of east Tennessee is where I used to catch a lot of trout in small streams where the water stays cold year around. Now,I haven't wet a line in 4 yrs because I drive just over 200 miles a day to work and back and that takes up my time and energy.Thank you for the video. It takes me back to simple times when I enjoyed life better.
Dude, not only did I enjoy the tourney style matchups, the overall music, vibe and voiceover were great! Love trout fishing with my granddaughters, we’ll for sure be using pink going forward. Thanks you for the smile, you made my day. :)
Once again, an exceptional video. I can only begin to imagine the time, effort and patience it took to film that! Thank you for sharing, it was a joy to watch and learn!
Chartreuse has always been my go-to. Have caught soooo many trout off of it and it's hard to switch to any other color because of that. But I'm sure every lake/region/state is different. Talk to the old guys who have fished in the area for a long time. They'll know what works and what doesn't. Also, I've always heard that the power eggs and the dough are different. Because when you roll the dough into a ball, you release more scent and it also covers the hook better because you can mold it.
Interesting video for sure. Experienced anglers will know this already, but if there are any beginner reading just be aware there are far too many variables to narrow it down to a clear winner though. Sometimes one color will get no attention while another is phenomenal. Fish that same place a day or two later though and it can completely change; be opposite in fact. For instance, this video might make you think orange is a bad choice as it was the first to be eliminated. Very recently however I was fishing a place here in Utah with green(which usually works pretty well in this spot), but having zero luck. I switched over to orange and almost immediately caught a nice big rainbow. It wasn't long after that I had caught my limit(and then some just for fun) and was headed home. As I'm sure many people on here have already said - the moral of the story is it is always a good idea to have a few options on hand. Still super fun to watch these underwater bites though.
Awesome video fun to watch. One thing I would say seems to hold true with power bait is water clarity. I use the brighter colors when the water is murky because the trout seem to be able to see it easier. I've tried this method fishing with two poles and 4/5 times I would get hits on the brighter colors.
Great video! I tend to use more technical approaches for trout but this is great information as my younger siblings and cousins throw power bait most of the year. Thanks for the work this video took
When the trout went for the bait, they seemed to go after the one specific color. Interesting little test you did. I fish yellow power bait in our streams and green in the lakes. If I fish worms I use natural worms and sometimes a green worm. Someone said it mimics a green caddis or some kind of an insect. Fun stuff. Keep them coming
Yellow/Chartreuse have always been popular, probably because they look like corn. I used to use the chartreuse rainbow all of the time and then went to pink as a backup, but lately I've been starting with pink and going to the chartreuse if they're slow. Now I need to watch your drop shot video!
I've been fishing with powerbait since early 90s when it came out. I fish mostly creeks and I can fully say orange is not the worst color by any means for creeks....it's literally at my top of the along with Chartreuse. One thing to note as others mention the water depth along with water clarity and even the bottom will impact results. I would take these results with grain of salt so to speak. You really need to adapt to where you are fishing and this is the same for any species.
Agreed. The main place I use powerbait the green with glitter dough is the ticket dipped in some garlic scent sauce. And fishing these at different depths is also gonna change results as well.
One of my favorite sayings about trout fishing with rooster tails is "if one color isnt working today, try a different color". I have the feeling it probably works the same with power bait... some days pink will rein supreme and other days it will be another color. GREAT VIDEO!!!
This video got me to get my camper washed in the driveway and got my old man's tackle box out for first time since he passed. The love of fishing is back. Tha kyou. If ever could understand thankyou. Great video
When my kids were little we stayed at a trout fly fishing place in WV. Kids were 5 and 6 years old. I fly fished catch and release. But gave my kids mickey mouse rods with pink power bait. I would catch one here or there on fly. Kids were hauling them in every cast. People who ran the place got pissed off and made us stop fishing. No fish were harmed by the kids, I was with them the whole time. I will never go back to that place because of the way we were treated. None of my friends would go back either, and there were 20 of us fly fisherman and girls that stayed there multiple times.
Same thing happened to my good friend at a park here in vegas. His daughter with the $10 barbie pope was catching bigger smallmouth than the serious "fishermen." I guess they all got pisse and were huffing and puffing.
They don’t spit it fast with a slip sinker rig because they don’t feel the weight. That way you can let them run with it for a second before setting the hook. Awesome video, five stars.
As a kid my mother would take us trout fishing and by 8am she would have caught her 2 fish limit from sunrise to 8am using mini marshmallows other fishermen would be in awe and always ask what she was using for bait . She would tell them and they couldn’t believe it. But she did it for years it was funny
Great video. Purple, Blue, Green are colors we see that fish also see. Purple, Blue, Green can also be seen better at depth and in dirty water than other colors of the rainbow. However, fish see UV light better than any color we see. Not many people realize that Pink and White both reflect UV light. Hence, perfect reasoning on why those 2 colors produced the best followed by Purple, Blue, Green. Take a UV light to your favorite lures/baits and I bet most will show lots of UV.
I love the underwater view, it’s nice to see the fishes reaction to the different colors. Thanks to you I will definitely be purchasing a broader variety of power bait.(:
Really enjoyed this clip, thanks for taking the time and effort to create it. Kageyama has a book out called "What fish see". This helps to put the colours in context with the depth clarity and available sunlight.

Hey man great video! Leaving the Powerbait covering the hook is how I’ve always used it! The Powerbait is soft enough that when they bite it you can still get a hook set! Maybe try that next time? I’d like to see which one gets better hook sets! I know I’ll be trying both when I get back to a trout river!
That is also how I apply power bait . I never use the power-bait balls. I use the clay PB and apply it right onto the hook and shape it into a ball right on the hook. Trout are rarely mouth hooked, they always swallow and are throat hooked. (using sliding sinker rig)
These fish have not seen salmon eggs. If anything they’ve seen their own eggs which are yellowish/ Orange. Salmon aren’t the only Fish that lay eggs. And trout eat their own eggs.
@@chuckchucky8781 theyre slightly more orange but fairly similar none the less, also how do you know? if this is a river in the pacific northwest you can almost guarantee theyve seen salmon eggs
@Hunter fishman where i live our stocked trout have definitely seen trout eggs as we stock both triploid and diploid, we also used to put hatchery cutthroat into streams and we still put hatchery steelhead so those guys see salmon eggs, its in their genes even if its not their direct diet
Interesting, and very well done. It is also consistent with my personal preferences in Tasmania. My go to colour for Rainbow Trout, a pink crankbait or Tassie Devil cobra wobbler. There's one caveat though, which I will stress. I'm no expert!
Really cool video, very informative. Something I’ve learned with trout, they like brighter colors on brighter days, and darker colors on darker days. Take that into consideration!!!
I've had the most success with the neon orange color with glitter in the waters where I usually fish. The water is pretty clear and deep there. I think it all depends on the water opacity, depth, time of day etc... Just bring different colors and rotate them until you have success.
People's favorite doesn't always win in tournament formats. It was definitely entertaining to watch like any competitive sports. Thanks for the video. I believe people's favorite worm color is pink too.
Fun video, but not very scientific. There are just too many variables such as light, clarity of water, temperature, local food hatches, etc. That said, I think I'll try the pink. lol
The lakes around me, orange power eggs work at one lake and pink works at another. At deeper depths white works. Around the fall season lime green works in most of the lakes. Throughout the spring and summer, orange and chartreuse. Very interesting video bro. Thanks for posting 👍🏼 Happy fishing everyone 🎣
Interesting whenever I do use powerbait i always go with green, or yellow. However when I throw lures I've always thrown white, black or pink, sometimes red. Lately however my last trip I've noticed green was working really good on lures atleast. I feel water clarity can also affect the bite as well as other conditions such as scent however I don't know much about scent it's always been a meh for me when it came to scent
Nice! Yeah I don't know if scent matters a ton. I forgot to mention, the red power eggs were garlic scented. And they got eliminated near the beginning. It might matter more in stained water though, since they can't rely on vision as much
If this is trout in a natural setting in some urban lake (and not at some trout hatchery operation that you somehow have access to), this is the most unbelievable fishing video i've ever seen.. most fishermen hope to just locate fish, let alone try to get them to bite.. and spend countless hours doing so. You've not only been able to 1) locate them, but 2) set up a camera on them 3) get them to stick around long enough to capture them on video 4) get them to bite... and finally 5) get them to bite on camera no less. Unbelievable. If this wasn't enough, the number of times you are able to do this over and over again for every color round is just.. incomprehensible. Seems like you are able to just do this AT WILL. I wanna know how much time went into completing this video lol. In any case, hats off to you... what you did was nothing short of amazing. i'll pay to see the "The Making of the UA-cam Color SHOWDOWN..." documentary .. lol. Oh, BTW.. the PB / color data and info presented here was equally as impressive and incredibly useful in its own right.
Wow thanks for the amazing review!!! It is really great to see that this video is entertaining as well as informative. So this is a pond that is stocked but also has wild trout and a healthy population of minnows and aquatic insects. Not any sort of hatchery pond or private pond or anything like that. Also the water is clean. Believe it or not, that first clip was actually before they did any stocking! I was shocked because given how many trout were holding in one place, I figured they had just been stocked. So I called ODFW to find out those were just the holdovers (possibly trout that hatched under ice and grew over the winter). In total, it took me over 50 hours to make the video, maybe more, including all the graphics. It took me 5 filming sessions, one of which was lost because the camera was aimed too high. Thanks again for watching!

There is also flavor, some of these baits have flavor to them and that changes a ton.
The lakes around me, orange power eggs work at one lake and pink works at another. At deeper depths white works. Around the fall season lime green works in most of the lakes. Throughout the spring and summer, orange and chartreuse. Very interesting video bro. Thanks for posting 👍🏼
Happy fishing everyone 🎣
Interesting whenever I do use powerbait i always go with green, or yellow.
However when I throw lures I've always thrown white, black or pink, sometimes red. Lately however my last trip I've noticed green was working really good on lures atleast.
I feel water clarity can also affect the bite as well as other conditions such as scent however I don't know much about scent it's always been a meh for me when it came to scent
Nice! Yeah I don't know if scent matters a ton. I forgot to mention, the red power eggs were garlic scented. And they got eliminated near the beginning. It might matter more in stained water though, since they can't rely on vision as much
Chartreuse, and pink have been all I ever need!
Don’t use bait hooks for “power bait”, I use #10 eagle claw treble hooks, works whole lot better I think!
Best challenge on power bait I've seen. You took some time doing this video. Awesome.
Thank you for the recognition! This video took 50 hours to produce!
The reason they’re spitting it so quick is that you’re using a dropshot rig and not a sliding sinker rig
Yep. Feeling the weight. Slide sinker and they would have taken it
I've been using 4 pound test with a two pound liter with a slide sinker for over 30 years👍 my gramps taught me that when I was a little guy.
Thank you! We all appreciate it man.
Temperature and whether the sky is overcast or sunny has a massive impact on colors fish bite, also your hook set is weak and "behind schedule" lol
What do you recommend for overcast or rain fishing?
I truly am amazed with your stuff here thank you very much
You're only eating that powerbait because they're stocked trout
Rt I'm watchn video sayn that like is this a personal pond or some sort of hatchery...
Nah just a stocked pond with wild trout in it as well. Lots of food, clean water and a healthy population!
Why was this so entertaining to watch
this is irrelevant when it comes to where your at in the world fishing wise....either it be power bait....or powerbait rat tails
Nobody cares
Aerosmith: "PINK on my favorite fish hook". Great video. Scientifically done. Two thumbs up.
Best Power bait video I have seen yet! Good job!
That's awesome to hear!! Thanks!!!
Thank you so much guys is Wass super experiment👍👏
Awesome underwater water footage..Thanks
That was really interesting. I have used mostly rainbow or green and done ok. Pink never even crossed my mind. Thank you for a great video.
W have used mini marshmallows for years trout fishing and the pink ones were always the most effective. Latest results earlier this week. Great video.
Great video I fish all the time using lemonade , tequila lime and salmon peach they love them
These are some quality videos man. I seem to have good luck with pink lemonade dough bait.
Thank you dude! Appreciate you!
Fantastic video. Very well made. Loved every second
